Director's Cut for me. I loved the new footage, fight scenes, angles and sound design. Plus the humanizing of Ivan Drago. This cut gives you more of the picture that he's being used as a tool of the Soviet government. He has more to say, and his "handlers" hardly let him talk.
I like that Ivan speaks more for himself and is humanized. Clearly bothered by people booing him and wanting his own individual 'glory' versus fighting for the Soviet "collective".
I prefered the recut. Just a more sober film all round. More realistic, (well, as realistic as a Rocky film can get). The sound effects in the original always done my head in.
I love this Director’s Cut of the film. I’m hoping that Stallone goes back to the other Rocky movies to either add in any missing scenes; or at least getting them all remastered in 4K.
Some part's are better like the funeral scene where Tony made it clear that Apollo died the way he wanted fighting, Rocky should'ent blame himself. Notice Stallone cut all of Brigette Nielson's scene's down more evidence that he regret's being married to her
I watched this last night and I did prefer it, Rocky 4 was too cheesy and to 80s plus the director cut wasn't about the cold war as much as the original but more of a personal story
I love them both but I do like the Rocky VS Drago director's cut because it is a darker film, less joking, no robot, much more serious.

Drago is more terrifying now than he was before.
The great thing about Rocky,is his relationships all feel really genuine,with Adrian, Apollo, Paulie, Mic etc. It feels like, if you're in Rocky's corner for the fight, he'll be in your corner for your whole life.
This is very true and is not something i have ever thought about in that way. Loyalty is a huge part of who he is.
I LOVE this reaction, THANK YOU! To me, the best part was the fact they showed both Apollo and Rocky putting up much better fights against Drago than in the original cut. It gives Apollo a much-better respectful showing, more of a validation to his incredible career. I also thought Apollo's funeral scene was so much more emotional, given the expansion of Rocky's speech. THANK YOU for ANOTHER wonderful reaction!

Legitimately, this is the true culmination of the story. And the original disrespected the film as a whole watching this. This is so coherent, dark and gritty. This is the Endgame of the Rocky franchise for me.

I really enjoyed this version of the film. A lot better respect for the Apollo character. I think the way he edited this film made it more in line with the first 3 films. I really wish he would do a director's cut to Rocky 5. That film needs a better soundtrack that I feel should be a combination of the 4th and earlier films. Keeping some Vince DiCola tracks and maybe change up some of the scenes but this director's cut was really good. Only gripe was the new intro
The whole tone is so different in this version. Much darker. I love it, personally.
I think the 'Russia' scenes were actually filmed in Montana or Wyoming or somewhere like that.
The directors cut is a superior film. Rocky 4 all grown up!

I like this version. It’s more dramatic with less cheese. I was really hoping he would take out all of the 80’s music and replace it with the traditional Rocky soundtrack music. I know that some people really love the 80’s pop rock songs in the movie and that’s fine. I love 80’s music, but I didn’t think any of these songs were very good. None of them are as good as Eye of the Tiger!
thank you for reacting to the director's cut, I think you guys are the only ones who have reacted to this version of the movie on UA-cam. I absolutely love the director's cut! In fact I went to the movie theater and saw it when they had the one special event showing. As a kid Rocky IV was definitely my favorite movie, but as an adult, as I reconnected with the rocky franchise especially with the release of creed, I appreciated the deeper stories of the other Rocky movies, with the exception of Rocky 5. But I really loved the director's cut because I believe it's kind of a bookend to Creed 2. It is a much deeper story because we see more focus on the friendship between Rocky and Apollo Creed, as well as the much sadder aftermath after Apollo's death. We see a deeper aspect of the conflict between Rocky and Adrian after Rocky accepts the fight with Drago. I think both the speeches at the funeral and the speech at the end of the movie are 100 times better than the original, and the boxing is 100 times better. Drago still winning the fight but it's more even so it makes it a little bit more realistic and more exciting. Rocky doesn't eat punch after punch in the director's cut, he slips punches, he blocks and perries some punches and after slipping a a few punches ,then Drago hits him with a hammer. It's just much more realistic boxing , then the original where both Rock and Drago would get hit over seven times in a row before reacting to the punch. I do agree that the editing of the cinematography is better in the original, and I like the color montage of the original, over the black and white montage of the director's cut during no easy way out. But what makes the directors cut better is the elimination of the silly and corny distractions. The robot was just a little out of place in the Rocky universe, and showing Rocky's corner in between rounds made it a much more adult and serious movie than the original where we see Rocky Junior and his friends are babysat by the robot. Drago is also a better and deeper character, he was almost a robot in the original, were this movie we see at times he is too cocky, at times he doesn't know what to say or do, we see him vulnerable after he's injured by Rocky the fight, and we even see Drago remorseful for Apollo's death during Rocky's speech. For me it's the director's cut from here end, unless the original version happens to be on TV.
I agree 100% with everything you said. It is a superior movie. As i mentioned, some of the lines being cut and moved just threw me off because i was so used to the original version. I dont think the acting at the fduneral by Stallone was particularly well done either. It could have been better. And the editing was rushed at times, like there were some missing frames. These are all nit picks though.
@@KalElCanFly I wished Stallone would also make director's cuts of Rocky 2 and Rocky 3. Rocky II was absolutely great movie, but he doesn't do a very good job of protecting that eye. I wish they'd have a director's cut of Rocky 2 with Rocky has just slightly better defense, I think the 15th round of Rocky II is the best round of boxing in the whole franchise, but it gets on my nerves a little bit how rocky just ate punches without reacting and most of the rounds. If they create Creed v Balboa 2 so it was a little bit more back and forth like the fight between Drago and Rocky and the director's cut, I think the fight in Rocky 2 would be the best in the entire franchise. I also think Rocky II has the most iconic lines of the franchise especially from Mick, but I think they made Rocky a little bit too dumb in a few scenes, I see Rocky as an extremely smart man who wasn't very educated. I also wish we would learn why Adrian changed her mind about Rocky fighting after she woke from her coma.
I absolutely loved the fight between Clubber Lang and Rocky at the beginning of the director's cut of Rocky 4. That made me wish there was a director's cut of Rocky 3. I loved the movie Rocky 3, but maybe the fight between Rocky and Thunderlips was too much, maybe not. But I think it would have been a better movie if we would had more character development and more of a backstory of Clubber Lang. I wouldn't want Stallone to change any of the story from the original Rocky, but I heard that there was a fist fight between Rocky and Dipper that wasn't shown in the original movie, I also heard that there was a scene where Rocky and Mick were studying fights from Apollo Creed on a movie real that was cut from the original movie. Maybe those would be good add-ins but the original story was just so great the only thing that I could say is I wish they would reformat the movie in 4k.
The director's cut was just so much better. Especially the dynamic with Drago. He originally built Drago to be a nuanced character in that movie. Go back and watch the Apollo fight, at the end of the first round, his handler had this look of concern on his face. And after the fight, you could tell he was pissed Drago killed Apollo. Because they wanted Russia on the world stage for professional boxing, and Drago clearly set them back. Meanwhile in the post fight speech, you could see that Drago was almost crying. Because he didn't want to be 'Russia'. He wanted to be himself. And the fight was almost like him rebelling and lashing out. They took a really good movie and turned it into 80s Cold War schlock, because they felt people back then couldn't handle a nuanced Russian character. And in the original theater version, they portrayed his handler and wife to enjoy him killing Apollo to keep with the 'evil' Russion vibe. Where in the Director's cut, they clearly didn't like it at all.
Quite late to this party, but this was nice thanks! 😁🤗 Enjoyed the extra scenes and it surely did add so much more to the story and as you mentioned, after watching the Creed movies and then seeing this again, it gives a few different perspectives!

The Russian farm where Rocky trains is actually in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, so was the Russian airport. The final fight that takes place in Moscow was filmed at the Agrodome in Vancouver B.C. in Canada. All those Russians jeering then cheering Rocky were all Canadians who probably didn't understood a word of what the ring announcer was saying.
I made this point in a someone else’s reaction to the same movie but Drago actually beat the crap out of Apollo for real, because he (Dolph Lundgren) had no training and didn’t know how to pull his punches, and Carl Weathers (Apollo) threatened to quit the movie until Stallone talked him down.

I've watched Rocky 4 a million times. I've never ever seen this version, as much as I know about this franchise I don't know if I knew this existed or not, 4 used to be my least favorite. NOW 5 IS MY LEAST, I thought 4 was too much montage and not enough substance. This is a much better version. It makes the emotional peaks and valleys much more dynamic. WAAAAAY BETTER
This was re-cut during covid and released in 2021 (I believe) there is a documentary on youtube about Stallone doing this version of the movie. Thank you for watching.

I still wanted him to talk to his son at the end but because the robot was behind him they didn't do it

Well the Original is a Classic and will always be that . However this version is well better I think I like that it show that brotherhood between Rocky and Apollo . And why Rick was hell bent on going after Drago . But yeah I like this one more !and nice Angry Video Game Nerd name drop that was a awesome video ! I remember Sylvester Stallone did a uncut version of rocky 4 but some people say it's better than the original i wanted to get it on dvd but they didn't have the uncut version of rocky 4 they only have it for the original rocky 4 movie not the derect cut but in case you probably know that Carl weathers just passed away in February 1 2024 this past week ago

The only think I liked about the recut was the 4K aspect and the funeral extension. They should have just re mastered it and had a collectors edition with some added footage.
So Rocky and Drago did touch gloves at the end (right before Rocky went out of the ring)...interesting.

That's why they removed it in the original. It wasn't quite plausible as Rock would simpy get over Apollo's death so easy. Also in Creed 2 it was clear that the resentments were still there. The big reset was only after the second Adonis-Viktor bout, but also in a director cut scene

I don’t consider creed to me cannon in many ways. You mentioned Apollo doing this for feeling guilty over this fictional affair he supposedly had. But the way I see it, creed is fan fiction. It wasn’t written by Sly. It doesn’t seem like something the Apollo we know would have done. I know people do thinks out of character but I just thought it was unnecessary to do that to apollos character. So no, I think he just wanted to “go out on his shield” as they say, but obviously he had no idea how dangerous Drago was or that he was trying to harm him in the way he did. Never intended to get himself killed.
I can respect that. They are good movies in their own right but i can see how you would view them as fan fiction.
