The Messy Truth Behind Our “Tidy” Minimalist Home

  • Does being minimalists mean being neat and organized? Clearly not, if we are any example to go by!
We love reading comments. Our videos must have given off "obsessive" vibes, as there are hilarious comments such as "Definitely serial killers." and "Can imagine them getting annoyed with their guests when they don't line up their shoes neatly."
But the type of comments that make us feel a little bad are the ones where commenters compare the state of their own space with what they see in our videos. This is a case of "don't compare your behind-the-scenes with others' highlight reel", because we're definitely not neat nor tidy!

I'm a minimalist and still messy. It's good to know I'm not alone xD But it can be hard! I've always had trouble noticing messiness and making things organized, even after all the decluttering I've done. Oh well, it's just how my brain works.

    • @sonipitts
      @sonipitts 4 роки тому +15

@@anastasiam6044 And it's so true. In the rooms I've managed to reduce clutter and furniture, cleaning up is a snap. In the rooms I haven't, it can take 15 minutes of 'tidying' in that room alone just to clear enough stuff to sweep (and I'm still not able to get to certain areas because of stuff piled up there). Progress is happening, though, and the ease of cleaning and open feeling of the rooms where we've made more certainly inspire us to keep going.

The very fact that you had to make this video highlights how RIDICULOUS humanity can be nowadays. People feel personally attacked because your house is clean and tidy? Christ. These people might not feel this way if they spent less time on UA-cam and more time maintaining their own home...

It's easy to keep your place clean and tidy if your mind is clear. Often thoughts will distract and carry us away in the middle of doing something. Living more minimalist is really an opportunity to focus the mind more easily. With this, a sharper awareness in life, a presence and a peacefulness. If one takes time to consider the mind, in this clear space, we can begin to have a peak into Zen. Don't be embarrassed or feel guilty about being tidy. Messy minds have messy attachments - like trying to get others to feel bad instead of being inspired. Nothing is perfect, that's what's so perfect about everything.

I think the biggest appeal to minimalism for me isn’t the detachment to things, a simpler life, or even the environmental aspect (it’s still a big part). But for me it’s the idea of having a clean, manageable space. I don’t like messes and even more I don’t like cleaning them up. Minimal life means a minimal cleanup.

One advantage to decluttering is more energy and motivation. The brain is trained to constantly scan and 'inventory' our environments to look for threats, and is a very energy-intensive organ even at rest. If you have a cluttered, busy environment, this process takes a LOT of 'CPU cycles' to do (you may not even be able to do a very good job of it if there is enough clutter, resulting in things like water leaks, breakage, theft or damage to important items going unnoticed until it's a big deal). This constant energy drain (which can be more substantial than many people realize) results in a constant state of fatigue, lack of motivation, brain fog, and can even contribute to or exacerbate states of depression and anxiety. That sense of freedom and energizing that comes with decluttering is an actual physical phenomenon - it's your brain being able to do its work with minimal energy outlay, leaving you a lot left over to support regular and creative life activities. Kinda like when you uninstall a big sluggish bloated piece of software from your computer and suddenly it runs lightning fast.

My system is known as the 22nd Century System. Every room in the house must be minimal and perfect in order except for one room this is known as the workroom this room is lined with tables around the walls and disorder and working in process is allowed at all times. If you make a mess in the workroom this is not a problem. Objects from the workroom can temporarily visit other rooms but they must return at the end of the day to the workroom and all other rooms must return to a perfect condition clean and minimalistic.every room that is minimalistic is a room of joy and that's how you will think of each of these rooms in the room that is for work there is also joy and no discontentment with mess and this order this order is not a negative thing in the workroom. It is up to you how you will feel in each room if your rooms are clutter-free then you should feel good and then work room if it is messy tell yourself this is not a problem this is just a project in the process whatever that prod check maybe it does not matter

Hi Guys! Thank you for showing this. I like you being honest and showing what it's really like. We talk a lot about photoshoping pictures of body but I feel that we underestimate the impact of "picture perfect" homes. It can help people set up goals but if you see too many it can also affect the view you have of your own home. It's all unsconscious of course. So thank you guys for being true ! I subscribed today ;)

We never really thought about it that way, comparing it with photoshopping and body image, but I guess you're right! Makes a lot of sense.
We're glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching/subscribing! 😊💕

As a minimalist it doesn’t take much time to tidy up. It’s something I do everyday. It’s part of living. I do try to put things up as I use them.

Thanks for being vulnerable. Looks good on you! Also how others feel about themselves during or after watching your videos is their responsibility, not yours.

I only realized this once I started taking pictures of my own programming setup to post them online, I pretty much only clean up my desk for that.

Hi, Thanks for sharing your minimalism videos. I have two questions.
    1. what is your mattress? Which brand?
    2. What is the bed frame? Did you make it on your own?
