Half of these songs were more hurt by bad live vocals than staging.
I met ronela in 2022 during pride week in Madrid randomly on a restaurant. We spoke for a whole hour she told me that not only Eurovision wasn't helpful but the Albanian tv just threw her under the bus. Budget was limited and nobody helped and the costumes were random costumes she already had from other performances... This probably happens more than we think but 2022 was just a whole mess
Ronela is just a mediocre performer, and that shitty exhibition just showed it all. She's just incapable of assuming her own responsibilities claiming that her song was bad and she couldn't sing, just like La Zarra the year after with Evideflop
That's so sad, "Sekret" is such a banger in the studio version and definitely one of my ESC favourites.
This is very interesting because the whole time it looked like she didn't enjoy the eurovision experience at all. She was tense at interviews and nervous when talking about the staging. I was in awe when I saw her open the SF, but for some reason there is always a favorite that is a surprise NQ. It only goes to show even more that the active fans are not representative of the public opinion.
Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper apparently also didnt get a lot of help in 2023 same with most likely a lot of other nq of the Netherlands
I voluntered during ESC 2016 Stockholm, that's when I realized how much the artists actually have to put in their own money depending on the country/ delegation/ tv company
I actually really like Roxens staging, for me it works so well with the song, she just needed more vocal support to be able to handle it
The flaw was that it was too much for roxxen😢 (having to move constantly and being dragged around with not a lot of time to breathing space)
2:14 its called "dance alone" for a reason 😭
LOLLL😂
The kid inside her (she was pregant during the performance)
I feel like they could have used dancers at the beginning and then have them disappear at the end of the song, as some sort of metaphor
yea, but something more needed to happen
obviously since the odds went from top before the show, down to the bottom
5:10 Her staging was also ruined by all the flags waving and the very visible crowd. It ruined the effect of a mysterious ballad and the sense that the viewer is watching a music video. To prove this is true, both times loreen participated she used this idea, and guess what? she went to the final both times and even won both times
I never realized that it's what ruins the staging for me. I mean, there's not a lot of ways to stage such a song, but at least they could've kept it mysterious.
I think the reasons of NQ of most of list are not staging. Just they didn't sing well..
Agree
I thought the same. In most of these songs live versions sounded nothing like the original.
"Maps" by Lesley Roy. Banger studio version, staging a hot mess.
I actually think most of these NQ needed a bit more vocal support, a lot of them didn't sound like the studio version which is also a reason why they didn't qualify
this year Moldova literally has no staging except her self 😭
No cause where are her backup girls😭
Yeah, so sad. Maybe she could've got some fans from Sweden to do something on the stage with her
Greece 2018 also had bad staging. In the bridge it looked “empty”. There needed to be more people on stage with some drums or something to hyper the feeling. Her throwing her sleeves around didn’t cut it
Greece 2018!
I'd add "Telemoveis" - they were originally quite high(around 10.-15.) in betting offices, but killed whole staging with those green "clumsy lizard" costumes. Compare their ESC semis performance with NF one in fluffy white costumes and you'll see the damage done.
The issue was less so the outfitting and more so the staging, it felt quite empty with just him and his dancer. More dancers would’ve made this more interesting, perhaps if they were in the lizard green outfits and the singer was still in the fluffy white outfit to contrast.
I actually love Roxen’s staging, they just shouldn’t have been moving so much, and maybe just should’ve stayed on the main stage. I always say let the singers sing and the dancers dance…
another one is technicolour from australia because they were very limited for staging
"Don't Break Me" would also probably NQ had ESC not been cancelled in 2020.
@@danikim235 To be fair on “Don't Break Me” we have no idea of how exactly they would have staged it in Rotterdam, it could have easily elevated the song the same way the staging did the year prior where literally everyone was writing Australia off as not only a non-qualifier, but also the next Barbara Dex award recipient.
I mean, several of them couldn't sing live.
Andromache's major problem was her voice on the semi-final.
where is Oniro mu ?
Ireland 2021 is a great example of this. I love Maps but the staging was too ambitious. Too much running and the vocals suffered, though the idea was still cool.
OMG YES
I felt bad it didn't qualify, but it was understandable
I'm afraid this year Moldova and Germany might suffer from the same...
germany is automatically in the final ?
Moldova did suffer the same fate, but Germany's staging lowkey carried the performance
You can also list Slovakia's performance in 2010.
About Amnesia, watch the jury show performance, she sang it great, her team told her to sing in a lower pitch for the televote
Lots of my favorites in that video.
2:16 if she had backing dancers that would defeat the point of the song 😭
It looked like a karaoke show....
Dance Alone is my favorite Macedonian entry. The song is top production and the video is pleasing, but the staging looks empty. Idk, if there was much to do.
Switzerland 2017 also had one of the worst stagings and outfits imaginable. Didn't fit the song at all, especially compared to their music video which contained the right aesthetics and complimented the song. I'll never forgive them for that yellow/pink nightmare...
I really loved Ester Peony's performance from 2019, I loved her aesthetics. Same with Roxen from 2021, her voice was just straining a bit.
Some of them also have VERY bad singing (Iceland 2015, Belgium 2019 and also Cyprus 2022).
As an Icelander I would like to second that
Also don’t t forget Austria and Albania 2022
I'd add Estonia 2017, Switzerland 2017, Iceland 2023, and Estonia 2016. Ireland 2015, Malta 2015, Switzerland 2013, Israel 2013, Iceland 2016, and Latvia 2018 are some examples of great songs and didnt have anything actually wrong with the staging or the vocals, but would might have qualified if their stagings were more impactful or had minor changes.
Belarus 2018 and Estonia 2021 are examples of songs I don't like and that were competing in bl00dbath semifinals but would probably get more points if their staging was right.
Srbuk hurts the most, she was one of the favourites month before the contest
So many of my absolute favourites here, where I'm mad cause they were ruined with really bad staging
Montenegro 2013
1:38 as a Croat, I confirm that nobody in Croatia ever liked that song and also that singer lol. The only reason she went to ESC is because her husband is a very famous football player.
Is it just me or have the vocals improved quite a bit in general over the last couple of years? Because some of these are...ouch (sorry but) 🙈😅
Joci from Hungary (2019) deserved much better. And yes, I agree that this song was being compared to "Origo". He was my #3 that year.
Hungary 2019 was my number 1! I liked it far more than Origo. I was gutted it didn't qualify...
Eye-Cue from N. Macedonia (2018): Even though they gave it away for Jana Burceska in 2017 over a bad stage setup, Jana's song was _waaaaaay_ better...
Jana's, on the other hand, should have resembled that of a _mini-rave;_ flashing lights and lasers, with one guy with a keyboard in the back on one side, amother with another machine (drum machine?) on the other side, and 2 background vocalists way in the back behind her, and she commanded the rest of the stage alone. She was actually pregnant at the time. She was my #4 before the 2017 contest.
Maybe what all of these have in common is that the song had been performed badly 😐
Oh dont remind me of that terrible María Ólafs performance. She just sang offkey the whole time. I feel bad for her because she got so much hate from Icelanders that she stopped performing for years
we should add iru- echo to the list, amazing song that nq
Greece 2018? Switzerland 2017?
Both pretty good songs! But I don't think the staging was too bad on either.
I think Greece was sadly a victim of a bloodbath of a semi that year - the same one that claimed Switzerland and Armenia through no fault of theirs - it also got Croatia and Belgium which might have been ok otherwise - we could have lost Finland and Albania too had it not been a mixed voting system. Televotes ignored Eugent and the juries Sara.
@@EmoBearRights Greece was a safe qualifier before the rehearsals, with high hopes for a top 10 placement. The performance was bad, so it got lost between better ones. That is what happened.
@@dimidrugg9592 Maybe a bit of both - Wiwi bloggs predicting qualifiers said they were going to lose songs they loved. I guess a blood bath semi left zero room for errors - either way it's a shame as it was a lovely song and poor Switzerland still did nothing wrong.
@@EmoBearRights Switzerland's 2018 song wasn't that great imo. With a bad performance it would have been in the bottom of the semifinal.
Roxen, Sennek & Srbuk REALLY hurt, man. I'd also add Yianna Terzi, my God it hurt to see such a good song given such a bland, nothing staging.
You couldn't seriously tell me the way you think Dance Alone could have made it is with backing dancers??????? Like what????
The second (Belgium 2019) is very out of tune let alone the bad staging...so too many other vocals in this video - weak or out tune.
Romania for me it was the staging that elevated the Song, i didn't like it too much before the semifinals
For Austria 2022 if the problem is live vocals it shouldn't be in this video! I don't think the staging is that bad
Belgium 2024 should be on this list
I can't believe someone other than *some* Israelis would love this song (1:46) LMAO
Ireland 2021!! Amazing song but terrible staging
YES! Came down in the comments to say this! Her song was SO inspiring and she's a great singer - but that stupid tread mill just messed her up too much. :-( I was hoping people would sympathy vote for her understanding how hard that thing made it for her and they could lost it for the national final. 😏
@@aekellyshe's a useless flop singer with a flop career. And the song was bad as well so the staging was the only good stuff
My “fav” is when they didn’t let Ivan (from Belarus) to have trained wolf on stage because apparently it is “animal cruelty”.
And then he didn’t get into finals because nobody was impressed by holographic wolf they used instead.
Honorable mentions - Slovakia 2010, Greece 2018
Israel from 2012 was a fantastic song. But the decision to add the two dancers didn’t enhance the performance. Actual live bands always come across looking awkward playing along not plugged in, pretending to play.
I would advise bands to stage them more together, instead of ‘planting’ them static over the podium
OK. In my opinion Austria 2022, Iceland 2015, Albania 2022 and Romania 2021 had all the same problem. The vocals were awful!!! Their staging were good, but they didn't qualify because of their vocals. Especially Austria and Albania.
I agree with you for Georgia 2017. I still think she should have qualified.
Finally, you forgot one of the best examples of bad staging. Greece 2018. Great song, great vocals, 5th in the odds to win the whole contest and due to this idiotic staging they flopped so hard, it still hurts after all these years. 😢
Moje 3 broke my heart when I saw it. I loved the song leading up to the contest and really thought they would stick with the whole angel and devil theme because that’s what the song is. The costumes look like a unicorn vomited on them. I learnt this song too so I could sing it and I was just too shocked to even sing along
Roxen❤
I liked Cyprys 2022 staging - she just needed to leave the clam and move around a bit more. Think Kalomira for Greece minus the dancing.
Most of the songs presents here were lacking from good vocals and the others were just awful
North Macedonia 2018 will forever be the best example of this 😥
The first semifinal in 2018 was just tough yo, there were always gonna be good NQs
the empty audience shtick for Srbuk just didn't appeal to the audience.
You can add now Poland 2024 from this list. The staging was confusing and Luna didnt't sound that great live
Also Belgium
Sennek, Ronela, and Iru 😢😢😢
What about the opposite?
Also Greece 2018!
After 2023, I'd def add Iceland 2023
Armenia 2019 one of my fav esc entries. Sighhh
0:50 I also never understood why they guys do that.
So many bad singers 😢
Slovenia 2008 is probably one of the most obvious examples of this
Belgium is an expert is this category
I still think Romania 2019 was top 3 of Romania's entries ever. Ester had everything except the staging. Btw Roxen had two great songs too and she would have easily qualified in 2020.
Ireland/Macedonia/Lithuania 2014💀💀💀
DJ Bobo in 2007
Greece 2023
Our Australian entry in 2018, Jessica Mouboy....I liked the song, but the staging was terrible, with just her carrying out awful choreography....and the dress she was nearly not wearing! Yikes!
WERE IS CROATIA 2021😠😒
Croatia 2021 aren't in here because their staging was actually just good. They were straight up robbed!
"Alcohol You" would have easily qualified had it not been for the virus. "Amnesia" didn't quite compare even though it had a music video.
Eliot from Belgium (2019): Some of the most nonsensical lyrics I had ever heard. 😕
Belgium 2024 soon to be
But Belgiums stage is good. The only bad thing in the performance is Mustii’s vocals.
North Macedonia*
Only Music matters. Not staging
CYPRUS 🇨🇾 🇨🇾 🇨🇾 🇨🇾 🇨🇾 🇨🇾 SO ROBBED MAN
In my opinion are most of these songs mediocre and forgetable.
Hahaha elliots wasnt a great song ... lost and found .. awful song- Crazy was in an amazing year 2018 was top draw- I liked Time- again Dance alone didnt like.Halo great song teeny dj :D Again Unbroken awful song- Roxens 2020 song was great not keen on this one/Again 2019 was a mint year I think most of these were right not to get through some based on poor songs some the songs they were up against .. look at Slovakia Horehronie this is the best example of what you are talking about
Bardzo tendencyjne
Russia 2018
How about i make a list of songs that "had non - eurovision friendly/mediocre songs but the staging is what saved them from NQ"
🇦🇺 kate miller heidke - zero gravity (2019)
I personally love the song but it IS opera (which is propably the worst kind of song to take to eurovision right before ballads) so i could see it NQ until i saw those rehearsals😅 safe to say she went from a possible 11th place to WINNING HER SEMI.
🇪🇪 elina nechayeva - la forza (2018)
I think im seeing a pattern here... but again this might not have qualified if it wasnt for her dress😅
🇷🇸 luke black - samo mi se spava (2023)
The song is sort of like mayo (you either love it or hate it) and latvia was in the same semi as serbia so serbia might not have qualified but serbia had a secret weapon: a giant R O B O T for staging.
🇱🇹 monika linkyté - stay (2023)
Now even if she didnt have such beatiful staging i still believe she would have qualified but i can see her not qualifying since iceland and georgia didnt
🇦🇲 rosa linn - snap (2022)
Now this is another controversial pick but i do think that she was saved by her paper room staging (although her song is the 2nd most streamed song thats participated at eurovision) the performance was alright but the staging was much better
Nah, all these songs are great except maybe Sebia (and that's coming from a person from Serbia)
@@sisarka468 I agree, unfortunately I personally would only include Serbia, which last year imho was only rescued by the staging (& Serbian diaspora). For me examples would be 🇵🇱 Bejba last year, which was saved by the dance break & pre-recorded vocals (to be fair she did improve her vocals significantly compared to the national final) and my prime example would be Moldova (I don’t remember the year) where they used that “closet” on stage which seemed unlikely to work but worked somehow 😂
@@manolosocal Bejba's song was okay, not great, but not terrible. Also I feel she was greatly helped by diaspora. Yeah, Moldova in 2018 had a bad song, the only reason they came top 10 was because of the staging
WERE IS CROATIA 2021😠😒
i thought the staging was fine?
