He is the male Lana Del Rey. Which i know sounds weird considering they make such incredibly different kinds of music, but they are pretty much the only two songwriters who not only write relatable lyrics but who actually turn those relatable lyrics into brilliant pieces of music.
Just a random boomer here. This song is an example of brilliant song writing, masterful story telling and leaves no doubt for me that live music is alwasy better!

Finally a real artist that has something to say and does it with passion. Seeing that young crowd singing every word and enjoying every second brings tears to my eyes. There is still hope for music.
Hi Jacopo. Firstly, a very Merry Xmas to you. The sentiments within your comment mirror mine exactly especially the tears, it never fails. Our young people deserve to be happy and carefree, its what they call ` growing up `. Searching youtube for something new to listen to I fortunately dropped on `17 going under` and I'm so plzd I did as I am now an avid listener to this young talented singer/song writer.Sam Fender is a well grounded individual with huge potential. This song is so incredible. It's not often that an artist's lyrics resonate with so many people. The song is so real and true and beautiful. Hats off to you Sam.
What i love about this is his body language. He is a working class kid who has had it a bit rough growing up but he stuck at the thing he loves and now cant quite believe that he and his mates are DOING IT. Well done Sam,from a working class Eastend boy.

It's great to see a talented musician being loved by all these young lads and lasses appealing to the young of both sexes and us older ones are listening to him at home!! The thing is the types of things he writes about are relevant to young people but a lot of them are timeless themes. We've all been through what he writes about. And I'm so proud he's from the North East and doesn't mind letting his accent come over in his singing.

"I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now" just resonates so much to teenage angst and fear. I'm late 30s and this song has just caught me in the head. Terrific songwriter.
You know you've written a transcendent song when someone from across the globe listens to an automotive podcast and the hosts, from LA, just rave about the artist as they play the song, just to share the music with their listeners. During my 64 years I've heard some great music from Queen to Elton John and AC/DC and many more superstars through the years . This video persuaded me to download both albums. It has the potential to be a classic of all time. The crowd interaction is immense. I am originally from Tyneside so to see this man performing with such enjoyment is inspirational. Brilliant. "I was far too scared to hit him, but I'd hit him in a heart beat now" sung back from the audience with the same passion and intensity as you'd find in a Springsteen concert, audience and performer one entity. Great!
As someone who grew up in the '80s and '90s, Sam Fender (and his young audience) are inspiring. I hope this heralds the return of real, raw music and gigs.
I can say that we were very lucky to hear him live when he and his band were the opening act for Bruce Springsteen in Rome 21.May 2023. If I close my eyes while listening to this song I "fly" to this wonderful event that will remain in my memory forever ...
It was so nice and we continued as a crowd to sing that melody during encore, musical break and people were singing it when they were leaving the venue it was such a good atmosphere
I've not been so interested in q solo artist that can play guitar and write great lyrics this much for over 15 years. From a 41 year old that grew up on oasis

Been going to gigs all my life and I've honestly never seen someone enjoy themselves on stage as much as Sam did - completely set the tone for everyone in that room. amazing vibes. amazing performance. 'WE DID IT BOYS!!!'

It makes me so happy to see young people enjoying themselves after the shitty couple of years they’ve had…..should be the best years of their lives and they’ve had to put them on hold.
British Northern working class sensibility and musical legacy ( Sam Vendor) meets Bruce Springsteen meets The War on Drugs - and for a newly established artist that’s quite the accolade - he makes me proud to be British. Listen carefully to the lyrics of Born in the USA (which is the exact opposite to a flag waving tribute to the US ) or Dancing in the dark or Born to Run and they all talk of the desperation and despair that growing up in depressed and poor post industrial areas can cause. With high unemployment and very little opportunities for young people to find a career and build a life of their own it’s very easy to feel defeated before you have even started. I remember how hard it was being 17 and how the world didn’t take me seriously and how lost I was. Now looking back on it I see that I should of understood and appreciated how young I was and how much I had to look forward to but I just couldn’t. Before I even heard the song the title ‘17 going under’ immediately resonated with me and then the rest is why I’m here writing this and why you’re reading it. Sam Vendor flies the flag for his generation and shows how much they have to offer. The older generation are quick to dismiss them as lost behind their phones and in social media with nothing to offer and no substance but he proves how wrong they are - although I’m part of the older generation I never gave up on the younger ones of today - keep on keeping on. I hope one day when you’re 50 (like me) a modern day Sam Vendor will move you as much as he has moved me to express myself in words.
I love the passion from the crowd on the line 'I would hit him in a heartbeat now' - probably remembering bully's that would see different people if they tried the same thing now. Love how Sam tells stories we all relate to

At 53 I am later to most parties these days, and that's the case with Sam Fender. But, having found him, I'm obsessed! Lyrically and vocally amazing. I can't remember anyone talking to a disaffected youth in such a way since The Smiths. And if the saxophonist doesn't get to play with Bruce Springsteen at some stage, that will be a travesty. What a gem. Didn't know him until he opened for The Stones last month but my 11 year old did - from FIFA - everything about Sam and his band is brilliant. So glad my kids' generation have music like this to grow up with.
I am brazilian and this song takes me back to my teenage years as well, haha, I am so happy to know that I share difficult times with so many people all out there, cool!!!! Lucky of you britons who were there at this bloody amazing gig!!!

I'm 46 and I had the pleasure and privilege to live through the 90s where we had so many great guitar based bands and I felt sorry for the yoof of today having no REAL music to listen to. But along comes this young man and I feel sorry no more. This guy has so much talent and his Songwriting skills are excellent. Sam Fender the Saviour of Rock.Get the lad a statue already.
Sam's music floods me with the feelings of childhood, growing up poor in the US, listening to Springsteen. This art hits you right where it hurts, makes you feel again and remember we are all experiencing this mystery of life together. Thank you for your work & keep going, just like the Boss.
This is a modern classic. The lyrics to a lot of this song could have been me as a lad, and I'm 44 now. I think that's why so many people love it, because it talks about them and what they went through. That's what music does, it connects us, and Sam's a natural at it. I love his music, great to see such a talent coming through and getting success he deserves.
I’m 78 & just discover this fabulous man & his mates. Catching up & making up the time & his incredible music. Listen to nothing else now. Till I die. Why wouldn’t I?

What a gem. Didn't know him until he opened for The Stones last month but my 11 year old did - from FIFA - everything about Sam and his band is brilliant. So glad my kids' generation have music like this to grow up with.
I'm 62, and I'm crying, brilliant
I am brazilian and this song takes me back to my teenage years as well, haha, I am so happy to know that I share difficult times with so many people all out there, cool!!!! Lucky of you britons who were there at this bloody amazing gig!!!
Proper. A return to the good old days when songs/performers meant something.
Can't imagine what it must feel like when the songs ends and the audience continue the harmony, as an artists that must be what it feels like to have made it.
Always gotta check a few live performances to see "ok, how good is this person really?". Amazing.
I'm 62yo & have watched this 100+ times. It really is amazing. Best song I've heard in years.
Absolutely love Sam Fender. This song is definitely his Born to Run.
Coming here to claim my identity as the guy in the white T-shirt who screamed ‘but I would hit him in a heartbeat now’🤣
That's the best part of the song 😭
Well done
That's the line that hits the most
Great stuff mateb😄
Hero
That performance and atmosphere got me all emotional. Sam and the rest of the band must be having the times of there lives.
What a tonic it is to see the sheer joy on the audience's faces throughout this.
Saludos!!!.
Maldives 🤣🤣🤣
Dude can write a song, next level poet. Music is my life and when something gives me goosebumps and my eyes swell filled with tears wtf man else can you ask for in a song, unbelievable
I was there in this moment, I didn’t know who this man was until I went to this concert, Loved every second of it. First concert in my life and I listen to his songs daily.
The joy on Sam and all the bands face is amazing!! 🙌🏽
Well said completely agree
I'm 66 so I lived it twice in the 70s and 90s. Totally agree.
Sam's music floods me with the feelings of childhood, growing up poor in the US, listening to Springsteen. This art hits you right where it hurts, makes you feel again and remember we are all experiencing this mystery of life together. Thank you for your work & keep going, just like the Boss.
was looking for a comparison like this 😅 not just me who thinks sam has a young springsteen about him then...
Still obsessed with this clip. Have watched it 100+. It is just fascinating watching the action both on & off the stage. Thank you Sam.
Honest songwriting from the heart. He means it when he sings it, that's the difference people have been yearning for.
Waited nearly two years for that gig.. what a belter night!
1:06 the moment Sam realizes that he and the band are on another level.
I was there !!!! It was incredible he was so chuffed with everyone singing back at him ❤️
Imagine being Sam, all that pain, all that doubt and then writing this music. What a gift.
4 hour round trip for this gig! Best one yet, would do the whole night again in a heartbeat ❤️
No measuring unit could ever measure the amount of love and respect I have for Sam and everything he ever did. This guy is absolute legend.
What is it about this Island and producing great music!? Sam's carrying the flag for all of the past greats. Truly outstanding.
I’m 78 & just discover this fabulous man & his mates. Catching up & making up the time & his incredible music. Listen to nothing else now. Till I die. Why wouldn’t I?
What a songwriter! What a performance! Epic!
This was the best gig of my life
What an audience and what a performance. Just off the scale fantastic
Restores my faith in music ❤❤❤
