Out of the 200 million phones Apple shipped in 2020, 80% of them were sold to upgraders and not first-time buyers. And this isn't unique to Apple. In fact, it’s the reigning economic model used by most successful companies. Instead of attracting new customers, these companies focus on making sure that the people that already love their brand always have a reason to keep coming back. But how do they do that? Sure, brand loyalty is one thing, but how do they keep us upgrading so regularly?

Hey Mike, that's a cool video. A mere suggestion - can you put the names of the soundtracks (literally all of them) you use in your videos in the description ?
Also, I have a few suggestions for the topics you take for your upcoming videos. I hope you'd be open to them.
      1. SUPERHEROES, why we love them, the science, mythology and philosophy behind them.
      2. CLONING: Human Cloning, it's applications, it's dangers, it's misusage, ethical considerations, Political interests, National security and so on.
      3. Any concepts of PSEUDOSCIENCE, FANTASY.
Do take the philosophical approach, but also more scientific approach. It would really help with my research. Need a comprehensive view on the topics.
I hope you'd consider them. I'd like to learn them from your Videography.

I personally find ads for investment platforms quite inappropriate for educational content.
Also moving the ad spot from the end to the middle might increase reach and impressions, but it ruins the viewing experience everyone is used to get from Aperture.
Maybe try moving it to the start at least? Or do something like "this video is sponsored by X, more details at the end of the video", and keep the actual video intact without ad breaks.

In the 1920s, the American car industry added the "year" to the car, saying the year in the year and owning an old one sounds old, this is called Perceived Obsolescence. GM got the Americans thinking it's impossible for cars to be driven more than 50,000 miles. The Japanese car manufacturers broke that rule and their cars ran through 100,000 and more. It's actually a joke looking at the quality of these newer car parts, I'm a mechanic and the one question I always ask myself is "how do they get away with this?"
The other week I fitted 2 injector seals on a volvo and whilst doing this a leak off pipe broke, anyway I called Volvo and they wanted over £40 for the one leak off pipe fitting.
I then called Citroen (the people who made that specific engine) and they charged less than £20 for not just 1 fitting, but all 4 including the rubber hoses joining them.

A lightly faster CPU that is of no benefit for me? A slightly better camera when I'm no social media victim? Getting new phone would not benefit me in any way, so why waste totally fine device??? The one thing I did like about computers was the idea of upgrading a single part of something.
If I wanted a better CPU, I could just get one, if I wanted more ram I could just buy it.
Apply this to stuff like light bulbs, instead of throwing out the whole bulb make it possible for us just to replace and buy filaments.
Or for a phone just have us be able to take it apart and redo the internals like a computer.
And for clothes make re-dye shops and have fabric that we can have added and removed from existing clothes.
Modularity is great for this purpose.

They denied they were intentionally slowing down phones with the updates because the updates aren't designed to slow down your phone for no reason, they wouldn't have to add any more features to do that. The yearly updates will slow down your phone because it's more demanding. The updates are more demanding because they're designed with newer hardware in mind and thus will have more features that the newer hardware takes best advantage of.
And the reason that they gave for slowing phones down wasn't "bs" either, batteries will degrade and lose performance, there isn't a way around that. I could explain it in more detail if you're legitimately curious, but it's not just some made up reason.

  • @salocin9009

Gotta love how Apple trying to prolong their phones life span by attempting to reduce battery degradation is seen as planned obsolescence. I've used iPhones since the beginning and will upgrade every 4-5 years, haven't had any issues. But there is a problem, its weak minded impulse buyers who can't properly budget thinking they need to upgrade every year. Even in this video the point was made that you shouldn't upgrade every 1-2 years because your phone still works just fine... minutes after stating that phones nowadays are designed to fail after 18 months.

Failure to take personal accountability for the features you want is how the EU gives itself the shiny new precedent to install police bypass chips in consumer devices because a few apple fanboys couldn't bare having to get an Android if they want USB-C charging. After all, if the EU could mandate hardware for a minor annoyance like needing to have a different cable on-hand, why couldn't they mandate police bypass chips that could SAVE LIVES? I mean we were okay with them doing it to fix a minor annoyance because "APPLE BAD", and letting the police get into your devices could literally save lives, so clearly that's also okay, right? Precedent is the foundation of all government power, and the EU just got a shiny new one because people couldn't take accountability for their purchases.

That wasn’t technically planned obsolescence, but rather a limitation of lithium battery technology. However, one could argue that Apple not making the battery user replaceable is planned obsolescence, as it’s a part that inevitably WILL fail within 3-5 years.

Lol. I have an iPhone 8 Plus at 99% battery health. I actually work when I am work, so there is not much time to be glued to the screen which makes it easy to get through 1.5 to 2 days on a single charge. It has a somewhat decent camera, it runs UA-cam and WhatsApp (seriously, what else do you really, actually need to survive?), it has a browser and the speakers sound good enough to scream along with spotify under the shower. Most people I know use older iPhones because neither them nor me are content creators that need to show off. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most of this is true. However, check out a comparison video between iphone X and 14, which 5 years apart are not so different in daily tasks in terms of speed. I do own and use an iphone X and I love how functional it is after 5 years, not feeing any need to upgrade. Companies are exploiting people in this sense, but people are also to blame since if you want to hang on to your old device, you actually can. Today iphones are supported and useable for at least 6-7 years after launch.

The planned obsolescence regarding incandescent bulbs is a bit misleading. The lifespan of an incandescent bulb is directly proportional to the power of the bulb, and thus the light output. There was a demand for brighter bulbs and as bulbs were getting brighter, the lifespan shortened. More light means more heat which places tremendous pressure on the filament till it breaks. The reason the centennial bulb has survived so long is due to how dim the bulb is.

I was pretty disappointed with the iPhone 14 Pro. I was hoping there would’ve been a more significant upgrade from the 13 Pro. There's no reason to expect a massive upgrade from the last generation, why are you expecting such? It's a generational upgrade, there are very small differences but in the long term it all builds up - I noticed a very large difference from the X to the 14 Pro and I am satisfied with my product - There's really no reason to be disappointed that you only upgrade 1 generation and expect it to be 10 years in the future.

That ending is idealistic. The company that makes long lasting products won't sell as many, and won't have as much to put into R&D for actually improving the base features. The company that sells mostly cosmetic differences every year will have more capital to put into developing the hard improvements.

My observation is that Apple now appeals to consumer emotion and ethics as part of their dynamic obsolescence. People can confidently buy their new products and switch them constantly while feeling good that they have somewhat participated helping the environment.
Apple has made the environmental angle so effective that constantly replacing your devices is guilt-free and zero-impact to the environment so much so that they have also justified the removal of a charging brick along the way. I see it all as a perfect balance of maximizing profitability, persuasive marketing, and corporate social responsibility.
