Smartphones have long aspired to break down the barriers between users and the digital realm. For the most part, this has been successful. So much so, that many people view their smartphones as an extension of themselves. In a sense, technology has become a part of us. Augmented reality takes this idea to the next level by fully merging the digital with the physical. However, one serious drawback of this technology is that it makes it even harder to unplug. Spending a few hours staring at your phone is bad enough, but what about being immersed all day in a digitally altered environment? What kind of effect would that have on us?

@@Arcticanine I wouldn't say this for two reasons. For one, the virtual world for some people allows them, even while it is a fantasy, to grow through a simulation. Second, the real world isn't being augmented as much as it is being layered. The world doesn't change, just the layers syneegise together.

I'm a User Experience Designer and Researcher who has a background in Anthropology/the Humanities and I love to apply that background to pinpoint and solve design and interaction problems for the most people possible.
My personal approach to design is creating effective solutions to problems that people already have, not trying to sell them things, subscriptions, gadgets and gizmos you think you might need to solve an imaginary problem that was marketed to you. This paradigm has been the prevailing one for decades now and....look where that's gotten us.
One thing people should know NOW is that it's OK to unplug, get off social media, delete apps you're not using. I invite you to actually do an assessment of how many apps you look at how many apps you use the least and get rid of them. Be introspective and see if the apps you're using are tools for you to live life better and, if you're wasting time and sanity on toxic ones, put more value on real-world life, disconnect and delete them.
All the rewards, badges and digital goodies we show off to "others" are still just 1s and 0s after all...
I'm glad you're addressing this topic because it highlights the worst case scenario in how future tech will play out. I'm hoping that more people will be able to have a more compassionate, holistic approach in design tech so it works for and with us instead of against us.

I'm so glad I one day stumbled upon your channel. Your information never seases to inspire me. Yet with this subject I am very interested in how much of our fears of augmented reality will become a reality. When the telephone got invented some feared people won't talk to each other anymore. Then radio was feared that it would inflict violence into youth - the same goes for video games in the early 90s.
The difference is however that the fears we now have for augmented reality are based on previous experiences on how things can be misused, such as the worryingly good example of the supermarket scenario presented in this video.
I have no answer to this all. All I know is that I will not be the first to willingly undergo full augmented reality myself without having seen the results of others who underwent it first.
But enough talk. I have a Pikachu here of some strange color whivh I must have. The ambulance with front entrance will have to wait.

I just think that the technology came too fast for us humans to be able to comprehend it. More and more people are leaving social media and buying "dumb-phones". I think schools will start to learn children about the dangers of social media and game addictions in the future. Remember that the older generations are always last in adapting new technology. They were not born with it and were not prepared for it, but they are the ones that drive our society. I think that we will eventually start to adapt in better ways to our new technological world

I'm one of these people that you described and, I'm only 22. Technology and society has changed so drastically in the past 30 years which is before my time that, my escape is to simply attempt to live the closest I can to 1997. I own a cell that is a flip. Unfortunately it has touch-screen capabilities and is a smartphone. I record and play cassettes as my music medium. Every car I own and drive...the newest I own is from 1991 and that to me is still relatively new. I own Tube TV's, boomboxes, a rotary landline (plan on activating) and even a Motorola star-tac which, I plan to invest a shit ton of money to get someone or some company to convert this analog cell into a cellphone that can function on these futuristic 4g lte networks that we all rely on. I cannot stand this century and wish I was never born in the year 2000. A year later, 9/11 happened and the world was never the same since. I've only seen the WTC through books, films and video games. I wish I could've actually visited it though no, I was born in the era I CANNOT stand to live in. I live life happy with the artifacts I own while at the same time unhappy with the reality I have to bear with while ALSO depressed over the future that awaits me. Shit, everyone embraces it though me? No. Life is only going to get harder for me as artifacts, people-everything from those days becomes more degraded, rare, financially desirable which, increases the costs to ridiculous rates until it is all forgotten to the past. Becomes history. An example of this is vehicles from the 1930s up to the 1970s now. Prices are skyrocketing to crazy heights due to how desirable and, uncommon they are now. It's terrible. Just what I have to live with for the rest of my life.

Regarding Pokemon Go, I have to say that the more I listen to it the more I find problems with people doing stuff like that. The game is definitely partly to blame, I cannot disagree there but so are the people who whip out a phone while driving or jump over fences by will. Unless the game is sending out some radiowaves that messes with our head (Which I highly doubt is the case), the people themselves are at least 50% to blame.

I did a paper on it last quarter and I found out that technology can improve marginally our health but it is increased when doing it with others both together or with the accountability. This is great because pokemon go has a great community and the gamification of the app incentivizes getting the steps in for pokemon, pokebals and etc to help in the game. I have also been trying to compete with friends with my apple watch and complete the rings. Technology and AR has great impact to our lives.

The last few Pokemon Presents updates and the quality of the newer mainline games are proof enough that the companies who own it don't give a crap about it, let alone the fans. It has become overly-complicated and twisted into one of the tools for the elites to mess with our heads and looks nothing like the source of fun and artistic inspiration it used to be. The same can be said about other long-running genre, reboots, etc., and it's all the more proof that we should unplug from the mainstream garbage. Up and coming artists should go indie and not let their work be tainted by horrible entities like Hollywood or mainstream media outlets.

Unfortunately it is not an analog cell as I would prefer that though at least it's a basic cell. Cat S22. When I think I misplaced my cell: Yes, I do get concerned and immediately search for it though not because I am addicted to it-no way, my PC is the benefactor in that case though, I immediately search because it is an important form of communication for me. I'm a truck driver and, payphones are way less common than they were a decade ago. About the only thing I do on my cell is make phonecalls and to check my emails. All texts I receive I immediately call the number back. I am 22 and I do NOT appreciate the rapid expansion of technology. Slow the fuck down! If I had it my way, I would live in 1997 for the rest of my life. That is "modern" to me.

Imagine a world where you scan a random QR code on the street with your AR contact lenses and receive a message with a clue to how to get to the next step of the game you just entered. Not necessarily in a cyberpunk horror /Jigsaw kind of way, but more like a fun treasure hunt, changing the reality around you as you progress in the ARG, which feels like a real adventure involving you, but written and curated by unknown artists behind the scenes. Isn't that an amazing idea? It's like videogames, but the platform is real world now

Lowkey I don't really understand the problem. Is there really a problem with valuing a virtual world over the real world. Is there really a difference, if in the future there is a virtual world indistinguishable from our own where everyone can be happy and do whatever they want in said world is that really a bad thing?

We might compromise our health like locking up in a room with just VR resulting in excessive weight gain.

Yes, and if a person doesnt pay AR yt premium, then, while they are walking on the street, suddenly a popup ad appears in your AR eye contact lenses at the same time as a fast riding car comes your way. But, by a miracle we stay alive after the car accident with only the neck and head remaining so we have to spend 24/7 using AR for the rest of our lives

After hearing all the facts, I still don't understand why the heck do you play a game while driving? Or risk your life anyway possible? This is pure stupidity

What if you played a game and didn't like it so you change the goals to justify the obsession to gain dopamine which will make you really good at that game especially if you have addiction problems be careful who you choose to play they might like the game a lot

Really? Tap Pikachu on the head?? lmfao. Now that's a stretch. You'd need a device that is implanted in your body that activates the touch sensors in your hands to make you feel what you see through AR.
