You can tell by watching her Monsty had complete and utter control of her voice. She didn't strain, she didn't need a deep breath and Freddie, well Freddie had that legendary 4 octave range on full display. two masters of their craft and it is just amazing to hear.
Freddie Mercury was approached by the IOC (international Olympic Committee) to write a song for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Anyone who has watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody will know that Freddie always had a passion for Opera music. Monserrat Caballe was one of his favourites and he was actually quite nervous about performing with her. But I think that we can all agree that he managed to deliver one of his most iconic songs and performances that just serve as a reminder to what a great music legend he actually is.
Sorry to have to correct you here, but in fact this immortal and triumphant Duet, was composed by Freddie and his Musical Maestro Mike Moran as a tribute to his new but already dear friend Montserrat Caballe, in 1987, long before the ultimately successful bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics was even thought of.. The approach by the Barcelona Olympic bid committee, only came some months later. Both artists enthusiastically agreed to allow their duet to be used. During the Opening Ceremony of the games in 1992 a recording of the Anthem was played, Freddie having sadly died 7 months previously. The Duet became the cities official anthem for the Games...
What other Rock Legend would ever dare to do this!! NONE!! Only Freddie could pull this off with the greatest opera singer of all time. They were perfect together, just like the band QUEEN 👍
I believe Freddie wanted to sing with Montserrat He wrote Barcelona as the theme song for the Barcelona Olympics. He died before being able to perform it at the games. They played a recording instead. His dream came true, being able to sing with Montsy. They became very close friends. "Incredible album"
Freddie and Mike Moran (the conductor here) wrote Barcelona. The three of them (Montserrat also) achieved their goal, brought us a spectacular collaboration - fusion of their genres. Tears of joy watching/listening to you and them.
As a singer and lover of bothe Opera and Rock. Seeing this makes me cry thinking that if Freddie lived what kind of future could Opera have had. I truly believe he would have gotten around to writing a complete one. I miss them both.
He did write a complete opera - Barcelona was the title song. He wrote it for her, her home town was Barcelona, home of the 1992 Olympics. Sadly, he died in 1991, so of course he didn’t make it to the games in 1992, but she was there for both of them.
Aree 100% with your reaction... The 1988 performace of the same piece by them at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura in Barcelona, is even more amazing. Truly spectacular setting and effects, yet complements completely and in no way overshadows this monumental , immortal anthem, by two musical giants from totally different worlds. True symbiosity from acclaimed performers each resepcting and admiring the others' talents perfectly complementing, not competeing with each other. Theirs was a true and lasting deep friendship. The piece was of course selected to be the centerpiece of the city of Barcelona's successful bid to host the 1992 Summer Olympics. Many still feel that the opening ceremony was the best ever.. It was hoped that the duo might perform it at the ceremooy but the fates decreed otherwise. Montserrat Caballe never performed the duet again, preferring to keep it as lasting tribute to her cherished friend and collaborator. She sadly passed away in 2018..
The whole Barcelona album is masterpiece . Freddie and Montsy were great artists, they loved and respected each other. I think this album is Freddie ´s finest work. Try How Can I Go On or Ensueňo, or something else, every song from this album is beautiful and unique
Freddie always loved opera and when Monserrat was approached to colab on this she was at first unsure. She was thee great soprano of the world when this was recorded. She met with Fred and by the end of the meeting, she was sold. The result is stunning. Opera fans and rock fans alike are touched by it. The icing on the cake was that it was used as the them to the Barcelona Olympics! I loved your reaction video to it. Your emotions played across your face the whole time! Fantastic!!
Freddie said that Montsy had the most beautiful voice he had ever heard and that he was honored that a super star like her agree to meet a simple man like him. This was like a dream come true for Freddie.
Freddie and Montserrat became close friends during the process of the entire album called "Barcelona." Barcelona is her home town. The back story on how the rock and roll god and the opera diva met, how this song came to be, and how they decided to do an entire album of songs is wonderful. You can see the mutual affection between them in this video. Freddie wrote Barcelona for her. Most people who react to it are speechless, by the way.
Freddie didn't write this for the Barcelona Olympics. He wrote it because Montserrat (Montsy) asked him to write a song for her about her home. As confirmed by Jim "Miami" Beach - who was there. It was used for the Olympics subsequently.
When Montserrat was asked about doing another cross over opera-rock project, the subject made her fiercely defend with such tenderness the special relationship she shared with Freddie. She could not seem to imagine such a scenario. How telling is that?
The song was written by Freddy just to showcase Monserrats' voice along with his! I think it is just wonderful and whenever I need a lift in my day, I listen to this. Glad you were finally able to hear and appreciate it!!!
Heavenly voices singing such different genres so beautifully. Check out The Golden Boy from this album and Freddie’s In My Defense written by the masterful Dave Clark. Freddie’s voice in this song makes me shudder and weep with awe each time. ❤
Only Freddie........Could write and Perform hundreds of incredible top of the charts hits , with the greatest , Most unique rock band of all time...and then just as comfortably get up on stage with one of the greatest opera divas of the day...and absolutely stun the hell out of the world with a remarkable performance..Rest in Peace great Freddie...there will never likely be another like you !
Freddie wrote Barcelona for Montsy about her hometown. They were supposed to sing it together at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 but sadly Freddie passed away in 1991. “The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away”. Freddie loved Montserrat & said she was the music!! She was one of the few in Freddie’s circle that knew about his illness! You’ve got to do THE GOLDEN BOY from the album! 😍
Freddie and Montserrat sing this song so beautiful 🎶 amazing 👍 song bosalona when theses artists sing this song 🎶it's pure class loved It John ❤️ 👍 thank u so much beautiful 🎶 🎶 godbless u from England 🏴 ♥️ 🎶👍👍🎶♥️🙏
Freddie was the FIRST Rock artist to merge with an Opera artist! He created an albums worth of songs (Montsy loved working with Freddie). There were 2 songs he did not write lyrics for (only music) which were The Golden Boy and Fallen Priest. Freddie asked Tum Rice to write lyrics because Freddie was “all lyriced out” as he said. Please react to EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE. It is Freddie singing Montsy’s part so she can learn the melody. It will Astound you!!! Promise!! (That demo tape became the song ENSUEÑO, which they sang beautifully together). Thank you for your reaction! 😊😊😊
Barcelona is an out of this world album, a true masterpiece. If this song appeals to you, go and check the album. I believe you won't retreat it. And Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé (Montsy as he liked to call her), the combination of their voices is a match made in heaven. Truly. From this same album, another more than amazing song is the Golden Boy...the melody, the performances, the lyrics, outstanding!!!
Watch his interview discussing how these two GREAT singers came together. It's an interview with Freddie. They recorded an entire album of songs together. Thanks for the Reaction
I'm new to the channel and have just watched maybe a dozen of your Queen reactions. THIS was the one that tipped me over the edge. I'm in floods of tears. I think it was their hand holding at the end that did it. They were "friends until the end" and now are probably together at a big party up there. I still have this on vinyl 45.
Thank you for this reaction. Like you, I found that the sections where they sang together in parallel harmony totally stunning. They became very close friends as well as artistic collaborators, btw.
The story of that song coming together is worth a movie on its own. It was a 4 year journey with the happiest 12 months in both their lives. And all from a chance visit to the Opera to hear Pavarotti sing and ending with Freddie's jaw dropping at the end of her first Aria. And she said yes to collaborating without him even asking the question or ever meeting her.
I am stunned every time I hear this song. It is actually physically thrilling. Thank you for this reaction, when I saw that you were reacting to it I just knew you would really appreciate every aspect of this song.

As well as Barcelona, "The Golden Boy", "Guide Me Home", "How Can I Go On", "La Japonaise" are my favourites but maybe not all of them have videos. Ensueno is amazing!
I only recently discovered the Caballe connection. I think there only 3 videos from the album. BARCELONA, THE GOLDEN BOY, and HOW CAN I GO ON. Do all three. No disappointment there 😉. There was a vocal he shared with her before this. Blew me away. Exercises in Free Love. Do them all.
