There really were alot of them. Youngsters with taste in music , take the time and check them out. Not all were solo artists, many sang lead in some excellent bands.
How was it a privilege? I’m born in 85 and don’t get this weird nostalgia. Is my generation actually that old that they’re hallucinating that things were better before blah blah.
There were so many good mainstream female artists and singers popular in the 90s it's not even funny - Shawn, Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Annie Lennox, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, Sophie B. Hawkins, Suzanne Vega, Meredith Brooks, Sheryl Crow, K.D. Lang, Abra Moore, Alanis, Amanda Marshall, Dolores O'Riordan, Tori Amos, Joan Osborne, Tasmin Archer, Natalie Merchant, I'm sure I'm leaving out a ton but it was such an inspiring time to be a female teenager growing up. They sang about a variety of issues and they were confident, strong women, I feel very lucky that I grew up in that time.
+boudicca storm Loreena McKennitt had a good run in the '90's. Funny how you said "lucky you grew up in that time" (rather than saying something like "It was a good time to be alive")(which is what I'm limited to saying!) - the point is I have a theory - that whatever we heard when we were 14-17 becomes 'ours' for the rest of our lives (my '14-17' was 1969-1973 - and come to think of it the largest proportion of my cover songs are from those years, but I'm trying to do every decade since the beginning of time). I've notice that one generation tends to ignore subsequent generations (my peers hardly know anything past the '70's existed musically) but I rolled-up my sleeves and dug and found some songs from some of the artists on your list worth covering (I haven't heard of all you've listed yet - I've just skimmed the major radio hits so far - but if it's anything like 1969, the best music never reached the mainstream)... I guess the second point is that a good song is a good song, no matter what decade it is from (meaning the song is 'timeless') - one just has to look past the period's studio productions to see it (Example, I played some Nat King Cole on the piano for my daughter (who grew up in the '90's) and she loved it - meaning she heard it without the period drawbacks (passing fads in orchestration and production)...
+Numi How Interesting to see someone write about this notion so thoroughly. You got me thinking about music that I enjoyed from ages 14-17. The years were 2003-2007, and my god, how right you are. Keane's "Hopes and Fears" came out in 2004 and is probably still my favorite album. Bands like Death Cab for Cutie and The Shins, artist Neko Case...their songs are very special to me. I listen to music from across many decades and enjoy many new artists, but you're right. Songs and artists from that particular age are SO SPECIAL to me. Just something to be aware of, I guess.
Believe it or not, I completely, truly, utterly understand. 💪😎✌️ Unfortunately, as we all know, one can never go back. Especially back to when the Internet was new, cell phones were barely much of anything wild, and meeting people in *person* was a requirement if you wanted to be anything other than invisible.
I feel that same 90s aesthetic too! It feels like the 80s videos but with more money and HQ photography, lots of color and also the look of must singer was more ''modern'', casual, cleaner.
Before cell phones really... and the ones we had were little Nokias that we played snake on. People still connected in person. Plus, when you're a teen you assign more meaning to things... but the 90s were def a simpler time... my mum was still alive and I was beautiful back then, too. I miss it too... this song is sorta bittersweet
I was born in 98, yet know what you mean. It's soothing, ethereal, almost "liminal". I love it.. I was too young to know anything but the vestiges of this age, but some things that remind me of this feeling include the anime Serial Experiments Lain (esp the intro song, look it up).
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of NAME by the GooGoo Dolls, ADIA by Sarah McLachlan, and "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins in tribute to 3 of the most iconic 90s bands. I mainly listen to metal metal of all sorts....BUT, there is just something about show Shawn Colvin sings and even more so this song! I just always come back to the his song and have been for years
I am so sorry for your loss. This song is so awesome and even though the memories you have about it are sad but think of it like this your mum is at peace. I will be 57 in 4 days, and I thank God I am still here, and I am sure my children do too!! Mum went home!!!!
This song is about a woman who "makes a few repairs" to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. She does this in an attempt to escape her past. Colvin was inspired by a painting, which she used on the cover of the album. The artist was a friend of Colvin's, Julie Speed.

Ugh these comments. There are other good music these days. Music changes. Everyone is always nostalgic about the music that was important to them in their youth, and says stuff like this
There was SO much artistic expressionism in the 1990's. I'm so glad I lived it. This is the soundtrack to my youth! 🙌 I still carry the music & fashions with me 30 years later. I wear all my Dr Martens, collect all things celestial & crocheted, wear my favorite perfume CK BE, always sprinkled with something glittery & forever in love with & playing 90's songs. Truly I am stuck in that decade & refuse to waver. This song absolutely stirs my soul..... There will never be another era like this !!! 💙🌟🌛
I remember not liking songs like this back in the 90s only because they were overplayed on the radio. It's nice to listen to them a quarter century later to appreciate them.
I remember in 1981, Air Supply's THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE seemed 2 be always on the radio being played 2 the point where I started 2 h8 the song but when I went away 2 Navy Basic Training @ Gr8 Lakes Recruit Training Command for 8 weeks & then when I heard the song after the training.....it seemed like a Christmas present 2 hear it again!

@@bethanyfregans6138 It was, but I think it could serve equally as an anthem against corporate greed and the individual's capacity for enacting change.
Over 25 years later, and it's still hard to find any song quite like this one -- with its magnetic blend of soft-rock, folk, and alterna-pop. And really, how often does a song about arson strike a chord with the mainstream? Looking back, it still feels like a good choice for the Grammy trophy. (But also, I'm tipping my hat to "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?") That would be awesome to have a comeback of strong female singer-songwriter music like this!
I mean, according to YT, she is still touring...I'm a 90's kid, so new folk (I too love Where Have All the Cowboys Gone), grunge (STP prob my fav), and alternative rock (ala Third-Eye Blind) just hit a chord in my soul (Pun intended)...nothing quite like it...
I love this song! For me this song is about liberation - of departing a mentally abusive relationship five years ago, separating myself from toxic acquaintances and relatives, and gaining the wings to fly (out of state hopefully soon) to have an even greater peace of mind. Thank you Shawn for this beautiful song!
@@hopppy54 you can do it, love! I know it’s very painful but once you’re freed you’ll be that freebird no longer feeling like you’re in someone else’s birdcage. If this doesn’t relate to you my apologies for being over the top. I miss not having a companion, but know that my worth is great. Anyone that doesn’t have my best interest at heart (romantic companion, acquaintance, etc.) isn’t worth being in my intimate circle. A long time ago I had my one true love in my life for too short of a time. But I am aware that my deceased friend is the standard for the ideal man be in my life. So although it’s a challenge I must wait.❤️🌹
As someone with emotionally abusive parents, I can relate to this song. I’ve fantasized escaping and destroying all reminders of their abuse with me watching and letting my past slip away, with this song playing in the background. I’m so glad I found this song.
@blue I can readily relate to what you wrote because I survived years of tormentous child abuse and near murder at the hands of my abusive, alcoholic, and neurotic mother. About a year before she died I told her how lucky she was that she could get away with all that crap. If I had children today and abused them half as badly as she abused me I'd spend the next 20 years in jail. She didn't take those words too well but in her heart she knew it was the truth.

One listen to this song and it’s 1997 again, I’m a 17-year-old junior in high school, and I’m working my first job as a cashier in a grocery store. Don’t miss everything about those days, but it was a good time! Memories!
The chorus of this song is, imo, so incredibly well written, arranged, and performed. The drums perfectly in the pocket. The moving, grooving bass line. That awesome electric guitar arpeggiating in the background. And of course that melody line over it all, with the subtle harmony tucked in there as the understated icing on the cake of it all.
I completely agree - as a record producer myself I use this as a gold standard song to compare from, and it is a must for any singer-songwriter I work with. It's just perfect in every way.
I heard this being played the other day and realized I had forgotten about it. So happy to hear it again. I absolutely love this song. I have been listening over and over. I won’t forget it again. ❤
defpickles98 Actually across different genres many artists displayed great talent/mastery over their skills but the days that's definitely not the case.
My aunt lived with us when I was really little. I never knew why. I just knew that she had left her husband, whom I don’t even remember meeting. This was one of those songs she’s always turn up when it came on the radio. Later I’d find out why she left him to move halfway across the country. I’d learn why my parents both woke me up in the middle of the night with no warning, dropped me off at a neighbor’s house, and came back a few days later with my aunt in tow, and I know why she lived this song so much. I think I knew before I ever got the full story.
i dont think Sunny in the song i abused but she is angry and the house is full of bad memories. thats why she burns it down and start a new life and then feels good again it is a song that comes once in a life time just like Suzanne Vegas "Luka" that Shawn sing backround vocals on 1987 10 years before she wrote This song
I've been feeling nostalgic lately, listening and watching videos of that remind of AOL, dial-up internet, Win95/98/2000/ME... but one video in particular that dug deep into my 30-something year old brain and brought it out after decades??? had this song barely playing in the background. It was a video for the launch of Windows 98 at a CompUSA store. I fucking miss the 90s, mates. It hurts me thinking that we can never experience a time like that again. It's well behind us in the rear view mirror.

I saw Dido in person at a tiny club in SJ/SF just before she became huge. I was lucky(?) enough to literally run into her just before the performance as I entered the ante-room to the bathrooms, and she was exiting. I was SUCH a derp, LOL. 😂 Instantly stunned by her beauty, and all I could mumble was "OMG! Whoa, I'm so sorry, the door was just... ... ... you're Dido." She said "Yes! Yes I am. And you?" To which I became confused (because I was a bloody derp) and said, "Me? No... no, I'm--uh--not. Not Dido." 😂 Clearly, I was a genius, but after that, it was pretty nice. She asked if I'd come to see her, I said yes, but not to run her over at the bathroom, etc. 🙂 She was everything you might have imagined. Kind, genuine, pleasant, chill but excited to be playing for everyone, and her beauty was ABSOLUTELY unequaled.
This is the song dedicated to every woman (or man, for that matter) who is done with the bullshit they are forced to accept on a daily basis. If you've felt these feelings, kudos to you for making it to the other side of the anger.
I’m 30 years old. For some reason, when I was a little boy this song made me cry every time I heard it. My mom said she would get so mad bc she wasn’t able to listen to the song without me bawling my eyes out. I recently heard it play on the radio and idk what it is but I still get misty hearing it.
Shawn Colvin is magnificent. She can take awful subject matter and make it sound beautiful when she sings. One of my all-time favorites... amazing song.
My daughter was in utero the year this song was all over the airwaves. I would belt it out loud in the car with her probably listening. :) She's all grown up and a nurse now. "She's out there on her own and she's all right." I want to cry- how does time go by so fast?
It makes me physically sick with nostalgia on how a song like this can literally take you back in a time machine and make you feel you're living in the time when this came out and all the old feelings you had with that time in life.
@@KM-mv3qr wow. Really? You sure take things way too seriously. Physically sick like overcome with so much emotion . Clearly you've never had a song do that to you otherwise you would know what I'm talking about. 🤦♀️
I miss the 90's, the 90's had everything: amazing rock, metal, hip hop, pop, dance music. Probably the only time in history where it hit every genre and that's not just nostalgia talking, objectively that's true.
Such a beautiful, poetic and moving song. The ambiguousness and dream-like quality of the lyrics and the haunting instrumental just add to the experience. Always brings tears to my eyes
My friend had mental health problems growing up. I’m one of the few people who knows her past struggles. Years later I found out she burned her home with her husband and kids in it. They died. She is confined in a mental institution since 2016. I think about her whenever I hear this song.
In an interview, she states that it's not about a specific event. She only put down the foundation per se and listeners fill in the puzzle. Basically, you make it your story, and how you relate to it. We are doing exactly what she wrote it for. To me it's about being hurt, forgiving the ones that hurt you and moving on.
As an old and gray now man of many colors, what I find interesting is that so many would put this beautiful music in a box. As a song from a "time when". This is ageless music sung by an ageles performer. Forty or Eighty years from now this song and especially this singer will have not lost anything in how the intent and the feeling were intended. Shawn is a gift as are those that have surrounded her to bring her to us. Music is why we humans are afforded life. Honor and Remember those that make you realize that. Thank you Shawn.
Fully agreed. Speaking 2019 Sia writes songs with deeper meanings. As do more. Even if they have a techno beat. ♡♡♡ P.s. Lately been going back to The Carpenters and Beatles and I am from 1985. And another gem in the spirit of Sunny came home is from Marshmellow: happier. From a mans perspective. So beautiful.
Twenty-five years ago. I still have the muscle memory of things like selecting a radio station in the car I was driving and stopping when I heard "Sunny Came Home". What a springtime for excellent music and it seems like it was yesterday.
Takes me back to my childhood. Man it flew by. Before I knew it I was grown. I wish I took the time to savor it more back then but at that age you don't realize how fast things go by. Boy do we know now how fast time goes. Wish I could time travel and re-live it.
No kidding. When we were young, getting old was never somthing that ever crossed our minds. It was a special time. Now we all look back and think of all the what if's and how life would be if we did this or did that. So many things we took for granted that we now appreciate even more.
I was one of those older kids. Deploying for joining the military in 99 and deploying multiple times was kind of like a book mark. There was childhood with all this good music and fun stuff like video games, etc. Then from the military and on...it was adult stuff. The nostalgia has been hitting me hard as 40 approaches in a couple years. I'm glad UA-cam exists now a days so I can just stream all the best songs from those days and come as close to reliving it as possible.
I work at a elementary school 2nd grade level and I'm always telling the student's dont grow up it's a trap. It's funny to hear teacher's walk past me and say "yeah it is".
I look back at this and I'm just amazed at the raw talent that was mainstream in the 90's. Really wish i would have appreciated it more during that time. Extremely hard to articulate the feelings that some of these songs bring back.
I am turning 30 in a few months and was about 5 1/2 when this song came out. It's definitely one of the first songs I can remember hearing on the radio (along with a few others from '97, like You Were Meant for me by Jewel, and Where Have All the Cowboys Gone by Paula Cole.). I still remember what fun, simple, and carefree days those were.
This song has had a profound effect on people (I was reading the comments below) The deep and emotional effect that music has, can make one a believer in "transcendence."
For so many people, music is the “thing that is bigger than the self” that Maslow talks about. And that’s something we all need. Music definitely transcends all times, places and situations in my life. It is a constant source of pleasure, inspiration, motivation and sustenance for me. So, I definitely believe in “transcendence” when it comes to music! I’ll believe for Sunny!
I actually got tatted the year 97 on me. The best year of my life. Good times. I identified very well with the music& art genres of that time. I try to re-live those moments as best as I can with the settings of today. it was privelige growing up as a late teen back then. I love all my gen X'ers. Peace.
"Count the years you always knew it, strike a match go on and do it." literally the most powerful line in the chorus. You could feel her rage and her need for vengeance.
Vengeance isn't a definite no. There's wiggle room in everything. I believe this is about sexual abuse to one of her children. The "you always knew it" part after count the years is what points me in that direction. I believe she witnessed or confirmed her suspicions. Either way, if a child is being harmed in that manner, I say "we dont need no water, let the muhfu**** burn." Even if it's a grown man is harboring a broken inner child within because he had the same abuse afflicted on him, he still knows damn well what he is doing. We are in no way responsible for what happened to us as children but we sure as shit are responsible for not repeating the cycle on other innocent little souls. Humans have the brain capacity to reparent their broken inner child...it's a long & hard process. But there is absolutely no excuse (even if the adult hasnt begin their healing journey) for passing the trauma down to another little unsuspecting victim.
I think we can all agree on one thing; Sunny needs to get some Help. I'm from Cali and the wildfires are no goddamn joke. Its bad enough when stuff like that starts by accident. People with severe problems need to be able to find other ways to address them before innocents are brought into the mix.
It doesn’t have the same effect it had on me then as now.. back then I’d get overly emotional every time I heard it.. and now I just remember it as a great song..

@@seronymusnah you don’t know if you were born in 1998, no offence intended.

This is the sweetest sounding song about arson and murder ever. Of all time.

Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.

Yes, Shawn was one of my ex's favorite artists. I just added this song to my karaoke repertoire, too.
"She didn't believe in transcendence"
Only those who have survived horrific abuse can truly appreciate the meaning of those words...

Yes for sure

Over 25 years later, and it's still hard to find any song quite like this one -- with its magnetic blend of soft-rock, folk, and alterna-pop. And really, how often does a song about arson strike a chord with the mainstream? Looking back, it still feels like a good choice for the Grammy trophy. (But also, I'm tipping my hat to "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?") That would be awesome to have a comeback of strong female singer-songwriter music like this!
It's a very Austin Tx kind of music
I mean, according to YT, she is still touring...I'm a 90's kid, so new folk (I too love Where Have All the Cowboys Gone), grunge (STP prob my fav), and alternative rock (ala Third-Eye Blind) just hit a chord in my soul (Pun intended)...nothing quite like it...
Hold on, some new boomer / millenial singer / rapper will ripp it off soon, oops I meant "sample" it

@blue
I can readily relate to what you wrote because I survived years of tormentous child abuse and near murder at the hands of my abusive, alcoholic, and neurotic mother. About a year before she died I told her how lucky she was that she could get away with all that crap. If I had children today and abused them half as badly as she abused me I'd spend the next 20 years in jail. She didn't take those words too well but in her heart she knew it was the truth.
So much story telling in 3:45. She says nothing but everything.

Weirdly enough it reminds me of high school when I had my first retail job lol they played stuff like this all the time
The chorus of this song is, imo, so incredibly well written, arranged, and performed. The drums perfectly in the pocket. The moving, grooving bass line. That awesome electric guitar arpeggiating in the background. And of course that melody line over it all, with the subtle harmony tucked in there as the understated icing on the cake of it all.

My aunt lived with us when I was really little. I never knew why. I just knew that she had left her husband, whom I don’t even remember meeting. This was one of those songs she’s always turn up when it came on the radio. Later I’d find out why she left him to move halfway across the country. Whoa, I'm so sorry, the door was just... ... ... you're Dido."
She said "Yes!

My friend had mental health problems growing up. I’m one of the few people who knows her past struggles. Years later I found out she burned her home with her husband and kids in it. They died. She is confined in a mental institution since 2016. I think about her whenever I hear this song.
No just the husband- the kids were saved- He had Pushed the lyricist too far for too long - at least what I've understood.😢
"Light the sky and hold on tight...."
Something about that lyric just makes me smile every time.
I always liked, Time for a few, small repairs, she said. Sunny came home with a vengeance. Lol. Can't help but smile either. 🙂 just a little one.
Takes me back to my childhood. Man it flew by. Before I knew it I was grown. I wish I took the time to savor it more back then but at that age you don't realize how fast things go by. Boy do we know now how fast time goes. Wish I could time travel and re-live it.
Agreed, agreed... Same here, mate... As the days gone by, and I don't know why... Wishing for those days long gone again...
No kidding. When we were young, getting old was never somthing that ever crossed our minds. It was a special time. Now we all look back and think of all the what if's and how life would be if we did this or did that. So many things we took for granted that we now appreciate even more.
Then we saw the older kids who danced to these songs in the nineties go off to war. At least that's something I remember.
This song does not last nearly long enough to satiate my craving for it. Pure gold this.
The greatest songs and ever do that's why they're great
I look back at this and I'm just amazed at the raw talent that was mainstream in the 90's.
All 3 were from spring 1997
Beautiful song
This song reminds me of a semi-dark evening with the sun slowly fading....
@BC BC ...... and that's when Sunny came home lol. :)
The smell of rain on pavement. The old guy behind the counter. Pigeons taking flight. The cat on the table. Mist on the water.
This song has had a profound effect on people (I was reading the comments below) The deep and emotional effect that music has, can make one a believer in "transcendence."
Here here!!
@benjaminharris7091 thank you for believing in me-sonnyspawn
one of the those songs you have in your head upon waking in the morning. and you are unusually quiet and pensive all day.
Yup, nailed it 🖤
I always thought of this song as Shawn Colvin's response to the song "Freshmen" that came out about the same time.
Sounds more like glamorizing evil and criminality. Vengeance is a definite "No."
@@anniesocial4453 Amen!
Oh I remember this. Good days of music.
It doesn’t have the same effect it had on me then as now.. back then I’d get overly emotional every time I heard it.. and now I just remember it as a great song..
