    An important amendment, it appears that copper grease that I have used on the new glow plug threads may interact with the aluminium body of the engine. One could use lithium grease in that case, but I have not seen a problem with the copper grease.

      What was the reason for you to replace the glow plugs? I have a smoke at a cold start from my 1.6 hdi and diagnostic shows a glow plug fault. Checking with a mechanic he seems to believe it is the glow plugs problem and says that they need to switch on at any temperature. Did your smoke in the morning reduce after changing them?

    Many thanks for the video it was very much appreciated. This is a nightmare of a job, even if all does go well. Doing it with a torch and camera could not have been easy! I would recommend anyone watching the whole video though, for me, I particularly liked you showing us the problem you had getting the plug out after it was fully loose. They just don’t tell you about problems like this in manuals and it is problems like this that terrifies me most! I have a Peugeot 307 1.6hdi (dv6ted4a) and the Peugeot garage told me that this job would “initially” cost a few hundred pounds. When I asked them what they meant by “initial” they said that a plug might break when they try to take it out. In which case the head would have to come off. I hate cars, though your videos help a lot. Many thanks.

      Thank you, much appreciated. It was not too easy to position the camera and the torch in a way that all is visible, it is just too tight. I was also quite apprehensive to do this, hearing all sorts of stories with glow plug tips breaking in the head. Having done it once, I would say that it is not too difficult and I am no mechanic in any shape or form. As for the breaking of tips, I am not too sure what to say. I am sure it is possible, but these glow plugs are tough. I had a few attempts to break them with pliers (end of video) and did not really manage to do anything apart from scraping the metal.
      If I were you I would replace them myself, they are pretty cheap and certainly not few hundred pounds. I am also certain that I would be a lot more careful doing the job than the mechanics would. Take your time and it should be ok. Good luck

    I have just managed to replace mine .... 3 were swollen tips. I took some advice from the mechanic that did my MOT that really helped. Here it is
    Unscrew the plugs as in the video with a torque wrench, when they feel like they are sticking spray some WD40 or decarbonizer onto the thread ,, leave for 15
    Wind the plug back down ,,, wind it back up ... try and avoid completely unthreading it as that will put on the lateral force you don't want
    spray and repeat as long as your patience level allows
    The winding up and down wears off the carbon on the tip but it must have lubricant so allow time for it to penetrate down the shaft

      I have changed mine about a week ago. One of the glow plugs didn't come out easily. Screwing back and forth didn't help much. I was able to even pull it out about 5mm before it was getting stuck. So, what I did is just spray wd40 and turn while pulling it. It took a long time but managed to get it out.

    Great info, I've the feeling someone has broken the tip of the glow plug in the cylinder head on a car I've just bought, but theirs a noise just started in the back of the engine like an exhaust blowout, from what I've read some people will just drive the car and the compression in the cylinder head blows the tip out, again great information and patience's.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  3 роки тому +1

      Hi David, yes a broken tip will be rather unfortunate. There are drill kits for broken injectors, although I am not too sure if they will be any good for just the tip. Yes, that is a possibility for the compression of the cylinder to blow it out. If that does not work out, the head needs to come off unfortunately, but good luck, hope it works out.

    My 2007 307 HDI with 170.000 , once the engine starts, I notice a rough idle and misfiring, only with cold engine. The engine struggle to run smoothly until it warms up and then it’s ok. Do you think it could be the glow plugs ? The dashboard glow plugs light never comes on ! Could be the relay ? Thaaank you !

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, mine has done that for quite some time now and it is not the glow plugs or thr relay (I have changed both). I suspect it is a little bit of slippage of oil from the turbo and burning oil is not really smooth for the engine. Have a look at the exhaust fumes when this happens and most likely you will see a bit of puff of blue-ish smoke, once that clears the running is smooth.

      @@bernatcarnerbonet3251 Yeah, forgot to say that the 1.6HDi does not really need the glow plugs, unless the temperature is really low, say 5C they do not switch on. The 1.6HDi are not like the older 1.9D where they light up every single time, so that is why you do not see them on. Difficult to say, should you give it to a mechanic. • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  5 років тому

      Hi Philip, fuel should not come out of anywhere! Nevertheless, if you disconnect one of the lines from the fuel filter and turn the engine on, I suppose fuel will come out, the fuel pump will push fuel. You do not want to be doing that though, air will come into the system in places that are hard to clear afterwards. This is only an assumption though, I have not done it before in this way

    That was well told. One thing I have a Ford Fiesta mk7 1.4 tdci all the same at the back of engine can you tell me when you are undoing the nuts holding the egr pipe to the engine what else is it letting you move that make the removal off the plugs

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  5 років тому

      Hi Philip, not too sure I understand your question. The plastic connectors on the glow plugs are just push fit, so just pulling them out. Your model might be slightly different, as some are with nut on top that needs to be unscrewed. The EGR pipe is a bit different, as it has the intercooler, the EGR itself and the EGR pipe that goes on top of the engine.
      Can you re-phrase and I will be more than happy to answer

  • @chatchatty2155

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  5 років тому

      Ahh, yes, the nut and bolt hold the plastic piece that the filter airbox sits on. The problem was that the EGR intercooler is screwed onto this plastic. So, in order to remove this plastic one needs to remove the EGR intercooler, which would have been too much of effort for me.
      Happy New Year to you too!

  • @chatchatty2155
    @chatchatty2155 5 років тому

    Thank you the reason I took the out let pipe of was to see if the fuel was coming out of filter as car won't start I no pump is working but if no fuel comes out it won't go to injectors to start car what do you think

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  5 років тому

      Hi Philip, check all cables and pipes if they are connected. Make sure the two lines to the fuel filter are not swapped. You have to prime the priming pump/bulb until hard, to clear air. If everything is in order plug it to a diagnostic such as PP2000/DIagbox or Lexia if it is Citroen and see if there are any error codes that can help trace the non-starter. Good luck.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  3 роки тому

      There probably was a P1351, but your neighbour's problem is not related to this, if the car is 1.6HDi. The glow plugs and the relay would not prevet the car to start, they are there to make it easier. It will start without working glow plugs. It is most likely fuel related, check for fuel line leaks or purge the air in the fuel system. It could be of course something else.

Verified with an ECU repair shop that one of the pins is supposed to be B+. I was just trying to figure out what to advise him as far as weather to scrap it or try to fix it, but with a bad ECU, bad EGR, blown head gasket, injectors that need cleaning / or replacing and apparently needing glow plugs as well it just seems like this vehicle has been too abused and poorly maintained to keep investing in it... Check all wires from injectors if they are broken. What is your opinion about EGR delete? I've got a Ford Fiesta Mk8 that has a different EGR cooler than the pre-2013 engines, and I see that it's a lot more difficult to install an EGR plate, not to mention the EGR fault codes that these engines pull up when you fit an EGR blocking plate. So, I found a second EGR cooler with the valve, and I'm thinking to connect the EGR cable to the spare EGR valve, so to trick the ECU thinking that it controls the valve, but the real engine EGR valve is closed. It's a one year old engine and I don't want to mess with reprogramming the ECU in case I void my warranty.
