Visiting South America's Troubled Nation 🇵🇪

- 🇵🇪 Peru is currently experiencing a lot of civil unrest due to a political crises. Sixty people have been killed by the police and many hundreds injured. The country has been brought to a standstill by road blocks and protests. And so you’d think I would avoid visiting the country. However no, I wanted to visit and see what was happening on the ground and meet the Peruvian people. And practice my Spanish. Join me…
Thank you to Lucy my teacher and chama for patiently helping me learn Spanish this last year. Without her help this trip would have been completely different and only half and interesting.
Don't forget to check out backpacker ben's channel for his version of the adventure and a lot of complaining
Back with a bang👑
Bald what did you use to learn Spanish? I would like to use the same program
Bald and Ben, ye guys make a great pair, good luck on this journey 👍
At last!!!
Thanks for uploading today you made my day 🙏
Getting out the poor man’s message of suffering in Peru to the rest of the world was solid gold Mr Bald.
Prolly knowingly that poor man voted for what would become the VP of Castillo, the country's deposed President, when he voted for him in 2021.
Now suddenly that poor fella doesnt want her, the VP, when she was legally his successor if anything happened to him politically.
The man is lying. The current President was literally the previous one's Vice President and is now on power after legal succession following the previous one's attempt to quite literally do a coup. "Protesters" are not even protesting they are quite literally just raiding and sacking businesses and attacking anyone who is not supporting them, to the point of setting buildings on fire and killing policemen. Fuck that guy.
Yes, but also don't take that one guy's word for it, it's worth reading more and getting the full picture of the situation. For example: the former President, Castillo, is in prison for trying to dissolve Congress lol. Peru has long struggled with non-corrupt leadership in their fledgling democracy.
They are in favor of a dictator. Bald here is pushing a certain message, stark when the truth is out there. Castillo self-coup, he gambled a dictatorship and lost. And this people are being fooled into defending him.
We will be victorious in the end, my brotha
As a Peruvian who have been watching bald and bankrupt for years. I never thought this day would come. I hope you had a great time in Peru and enjoyed our food ♥️🇵🇪

Those 2 old ladies selling snacks on the footpath were so sweet. 2 longtime friends getting through life together. ❤
I spent 25 years in the Navy and was able to travel extensively in Europe, Asia and North America. Now that I’m old and my traveling days are almost gone, I quite enjoy these South American travelogues….great job, thanks!
bet you lived a great live.
Thank you Mr Bald for helping inspire me to go see the world. I leave for a 70 day adventure around the Balkans in a few weeks. Wish me luck boys.
Update. I'm on my trip currently. Made it from Amsterdam all the way to Romanian and into Moldova. Stop in Transnistria for a day and what an amazing experience it was. Currently on a train to the South of Serbia after spending 10 days in Belgrade. Next stop is Bulgaria where I'll be traveling across the country from Sofia to Varna on the black sea.
God speed and have a safe trip. Hope it’s the first of many
Hope you will not disappear 😂

Theres only been 1 or 2 times Bald has vocally expressed he is having a bad time and was but I cant remeber which videos and if you add getting apprehended by the Russian government thats 3 lolol that is gonna be a bad time no matter what.

Great video! I traveled through Peru some years back and this brings back memories. You prove that if you have courage & good intentions theres 1000x more good ppl than bad out there.
Your Spanish has improved so much since the Bolivia/Mexico vids mate, impressive stuff
Spanish is somehow different between countries. Enough spanish to get by is fine, people here are friendly and help tourists out. Not like NY or other cities full of shit people.

Anyway he's a great traveller
I love all these youtubers doing travel vlogs it's amazing to visit different parts of the world via UA-cam and get an idea of lifestyles and culture including food and music, fashion and living conditions but this gentleman will literally give you a full on history lesson with detailed information of the past ,present the good the bad and the ugly!!! Amazing to see and hear about the interesting locations wherever B&B decides to take us on his journey! Thank you sir for the wonderful trips and very detailed and important history lessons! Keep up the great work and enjoy your time and stay safe!
those people in the villages... god bless them. I wish them and their children the best going forward.
Possibly the best content on UA-cam, just a bald dude traveling around the world. It's the fact that Bald actually talks to the locals that separates him from most travel vloggers who sleep in five star hotels and film timelapses on a beach.
That is why I have been a subscriber for years. I hate travel shows with unlimited budgets and luxury accommodations separated from the locals. I want to know what it is like to actually be there.
exactly, he's the real deal..And actually even learning the language of the country he's visiting, and he's funny, but caring, everything together..he's not a poser, like all those "travel" youtubers, who are ignorant and just want clout while sleeping in a 5 star hotel..
There is loads of UA-camrs that travel off the beaten track.

mastered the skill of talking to anyone, even in foreign languages, most real and raw vlogger on youtube! going places where no '' influencer'' would go, love it man!
I wouldn't call him a master at communication unless you're an incel with no communication skills. He's just very eccentric and comes off as confident but I can guarantee you his conversations are awkward to anybody he talks to.
Huh? Influencers definitely go to Peru.. it's one of the most popular countries to visit as a tourist in South America.
@@userseveneleven I know Bald has mentioned it in older videos about his personality. He want's to get genuine knowledge about places from the people that live there, so he tries to talk to everyone. Watching your videos during the last several bleak years has transported me thousands of miles from myself and fills me with and overwhelming sense of confidence and inspiration. Not to mention your humor and commentary about the random things you encounter which is hilarious! The very best of UA-cam, sir.
That gentleman in the Puebla who begged you to tell the story of what had happened to his people has had his wish come true. Brilliant stuff Bald, you are not only entertaining but you are truly helping by exposing us to the lives of these wonderful humans
nothing but a beautiful comment here
In reality, the only corrupt politician is former president Castillo who is actually imprisoned for the crimes he committed.
Exactly just as the resistance who truly cares about its people often is hardly ever recognized had their voice heard outside of the propagandized version that we receive in western media.
I remember that video in particular so crazy how it stuck w us
I think Ben got Montezumas revenge?
The fact that Bald has been learning Spanish for the past year to bring us better content is amazing! Haha (I know he probably just wanted to learn it for himself) lol
it sounded good, from a second language perspective
The fact that you believe that is the problem.......
@xcalibertrekker6693 how could believing this be considered a problem whether it's true or not?
@@xcalibertrekker6693 stoopid comment
If you learn more than a couple of languages, Spanish is just something you do. I'm not particularly interested in it and I'm sure I've devoted over 100 hours to studying it over the years.
I love Peru. I live in New York but I've visited Peru 3 times and will go back many more. Its has its dangerous areas just like anywhere but overall its a nice place.
These extended videos are amazing. The perfect amount of humour along with experience, history and information.
You ought to have your own TV programme with a production team, although your proof you donr need one and H&S would probably get in the way. Humour without offense. Very good job
I find it absolutely hilarious that Ben is literally the type of person to hate travel, yet he makes it his career to do it and somehow is able to travel with one of UA-cams OG travel historians XD

Naa. Not really. Mexico the best Welcoming people. Best food, best everything 😏
If you are an American, you will be shocked at how people are so super friendly in every country outside the US. Here in the US, we are brainwashed by the talmud-vision to believe that it's so wonderful here and that outside our borders is evil and hell. How opposite that belief truly is. Want to know why? Because the government doesn't want to American citizen to know how great the world is, because if word got out, people would leave.

I love how Bald can turn a boring wait for a bus ride into a good content by interacting with the locals nearby 🤣
Yup. And massive credit to him for dealing with that low airpressure and high altitude. It's not easy, jumping from a mere 90 ft (30 meters) or so from England, all the way to +10.000 ft (3300m) in Cusco. Not to forget, when making his trip to Andahuaylas ... crossing even the 13.300! ft (4.000 meters) barrier. Which is absolutely insane for a "bus" drive.
Holy crap, just earlier today i was wondering what Bald is up to and noticed he hadnt uploaded in a while. AND NOW HE DOES, WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY.

This channel is truly fantastic
I have mixed feelings about Cusco - you brought back sad memories. I was there with friends in late 1988/early 89 when the area had been infiltrated by The Shining Path - a Marxist guerilla movement. We hitched rides in small trucks to get to Ollantaytambo, the start of the Inc Trail, which was technically off-limits to foreigners. We knew it was dangerous, but when the guerillas entered the village and executed one of our group, the terror kicked in. We fled along the Inca Trail and wild camped for a week, then followed the railway line back to Cusco over days in the darkness of night. I went back in 2012 with my bicycle and toured the country, and was amazed at the change. Let's hope political chaos never returns to like it was back in the 1980s.
Killings and terrorizing people are never the answer, and I condemn it. And we must not forget the reasons those things happened. The centralization of Peru to a single city, Lima, has been so pivotal to things like lack of development in the rest of the country since colonial times. To the extreme that poverty, discrimination, colorism, and corruption affected negatively those who lived in rural areas and were ethnically mostly indigenous. This issue has never been fully addressed, but what we're seeing now is the rise of fascist ideals to counter the plight of the protesters. Even people I know in Lima who are rational and regular people are already treating the "others" as criminals from the outset. It's scary how quickly the government can use those tactics, the ones that create a boogeyman, to shape how people perceive ideas. Unfortunately I don't think the current government has any plans to address the issues of the past and present, but are simply putting on the bandaid of "tough on crime" and the Lima people immediately bought into it.
Your experiences, what you remember is also being used to bait people into fear. Frankly, who wouldn't be afraid of random bombings, raids, kidnappings, etc. However the deeper issue is being swept under the rug. Lastly, I don't mean to paint the people of Lima as a monolith because there are people with a wider scope of the problem and hopefully they will be able to get that message across before the country either turns into a fascist state or a place where terror reigns.
@@artofwar420 It seems like the entire world is going that way. Even once free countries.
That's some story mate! What were you doing down there in the 80s?
Dozens of mechanisms are used to manipulate the minds of people ( young people / living in ‘rural’ and ‘town and fringe’ areas people) in order to prevent them from differentiating between good and evil... It is the distortion of values and principles in order to attack truth, love, family, homeland and the most intimate beliefs... The SÂO PAULO FORUM's Warfare. It is a new form of warfare. Our country are under attack !!!
@@artofwar420 exactly. The Shining Path didn't emerge in a vacuum. It was a response--an irrational and overly violent response--to an irrational and violent situation. The people had the colonial and fascist boot on their necks for all of their historical memory. And they responded. And we can't ignore the role of the US empire in all of this.
My God this is heartbreaking. I appreciate you not editing the gentleman's message towards the end. His feelings really came through.

Quick correction at 37:26 ‘Viva el Paro’ actually means ‘Long live the strikes/unemployment’ as opposed to the former president, whose name is actually Pedro Castillo lol. Also it would be helpful to point out that Castillo in fact tried to stage a coup d’etat against the democratic system of Peru and when it failed miserably, he attempted to flee to the Mexican embassy only to be stopped by a massive gridlock staged by the people of Lima and later imprisoned. Whilst there is a lot wrong with Peru’s establishment and its handling of the crisis, it’s important to make the full story clear here. Great video as usual though I’m looking forward to the rest of your South American adventure!
If I recall correctly, he did it to appose the fascist takeover that was doing that same thing to him.
He saw the actually Coup happening and did the only thing he could to help the people.

Senor Gopnik! Dying! By the way, you descended from Cusco to Abancay, but then ascended from Abancay to Andahuaylas. Also, Cusco is already within the Amazon River Drainage Basin. It is likely that you remained within the drainage basin during the entirety of your trip, unless you went far to the west in Peru. The Ucayali is the primary tributary river that forms the Amazon River and the Ene, Apurimac, and Mantaro Rivers are some of the tributaries of the Ucayali that you were seeing during the initial part of your journey. Between them, you would find varied elevations and, therefore, variable climates and weather. 30C in Cusco is nearly impossible, since it is at an elevation of 3,400m (11,150 feet), whereas I am sure that in Abancay, at an elevation of 2,377m (7,800 feet), it is more common. Still, I imagine that perhaps you were exaggerating the temperature a bit.

I have found that with some effort it is not too difficult to learn enough Spanish to be understood, but it takes a little more time to understand Spanish. Bald seems to have learned much more in less time than I have.
I understand spanish fairly good when reading, but listening is a whole different beast especially with the different dialects and the fact that a lot of spanish speakers talk really fast.
The problem is the dialects, the speed, the slang and many things have two or three names for them.
Peanuts for example can be Mani or Cacahuates
Strawberries. Fresas or Frutilla. Papaya can be Papaya or Lechosa!

This is bitter sweet to me so reminds me of my travels in Mexico back roads in 1973/5. I love your Spanish. I went to night classes to learn for a year.
