The Amazon's Weirdest Village 🇵🇪

- 🇵🇪 Welcome to the Jungle! I sailed down Amazon tributaries from the Peruvian town of Pucallpa in search of adventure on my way to Iquitos, a town hacked out of the rainforest, passing villages where foreigners don't stop. And there in a small village on the banks of the Amazon I met the legendary turtle man. Join me.

The Peruvian transportation industry is fueled by repeating top tier cinematic masterpieces. On my 20 hour bus ride from Arequipa to Cusco I was blessed with watching Paul Blart mall cop 2 on repeat. I really felt like I was missing context from the first Paul Blart film, but after the third watch I truly was able to appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is.
What do the proprietors have against silence? I'd rather hear the drone of an engine. Do the locals actually watch these movies in the middle of the night?
In 1993 i took a bus from Cusco to Arequipa through the night. We saw robocop, Karate Kid 3 and a Mexican Sexy Comedy and 5 minutes into the Mexican film. The tv sparked and fried. The bus driver wasn't even phased lol. Then he told me he was in the Shining Path and wanted to kill Fujimouri but that is another story lol
Never mind Peru. Back in the 80s/90s as a student I used to take long coach journeys across the UK - 8-9 hours - and we were treated to such delights as National Lampoon's Vacation. These were the days before noise cancelling headphones. So it was brutal.
@@Alsatiagent They turned it off during sleeping hours but when the "entertainment" resumed it was paul blart mall cop 2 again.

I must admit that I was quite sad about the end of the journey through the former USSR. I thought it'd mean the end of bald and bankrupt. But I can't stress this enough: Ben has done it again - I'm just as hyped about this as I was when he visited Buran. This is - by far - the best channel on UA-cam.
I found the former USSR bleak and grew tired of it.
@@curiousnomadic I liked it a lot. The conversations were perfect listening exercises to practice my Russian.
I'm just baffled over how he was recording audio on the front of that boat.
There was one former USSR place where Bald newer visited and newer will. Most dangerous place on earth where you can get shot in head on spot because you are white and that place is USA. Alaska used belong USSR but they sold it to USA
yeah wherever he goes it will be good content, but the former ussr countries have certain vibe to them. I hope bald still visits them someday again.
Ben’s Spanish is a real asset, its come on so much and opens up loads of new countries to properly explore! Exciting times for the channel
As a bilingual I sometimes catch myself struggling to figure out if he understands what people are saying or not. Like when he says “I know I know” . Because part of my brain just translates to try and guess what he would have said in English.
Regardless it’s admirable that he is so good at Spanish and russian and who knows how many other languages. And accents are always way harder for learners to understand. So even if he speaks pansies he might not understand the Amazonian accents
yep. it actually is a good lesson to see, that anyone planning on visiting another country should try to get at least basically conversational in its language. Makes it a LOT easier to get around!!!! :)
@@EphemeralProductions That's why a lot of people don't bother to travel

I find myself often envious of some of these villages and the life people live there… I imagine it can be incredibly challenging and isolating but everyone seems so happy and well connected with nature. Suggestion: Idk how's your schedule after Venezuela, but since you're in the Amazon, you could take a boat to the Brazilian Amazon and stop by Manaus and Santarém. Alternatively, coming from Venezuela, you could enter Brazil by its northenmost state and you can even climb the insanely beautiful Roraima Mount (that square mountain that inspired the movie "Up" and has the highest waterfall in the world).
But anyway, south of Santarém, there is a ghost town in the middle of freaking nowhere. It's called Fordland, and it's where Henry Ford himself sent his men and machinery to build an utopian american city in the middle of the Amazon in order to extract rubber for his car's tires. And boy, did it go wrong! It's a pretty eerie place with a fantastic and unknown history.
The lack of good content about this city is criminal, you should 100% go there.
I'm a tour guide in Santarém and I've been to Fordland a few times. Let me know if you need any info!
