Clacton: Holidaying In England's Most Deprived Town 🏴

- 🏴 England, one of the world's richest nations. But not everyone gets to enjoy the benefits of being born here. Just 60 miles from the bright lights of London is Jaywick which is statistically the most deprived town in the nation. I visited with my friends @BackpackerBen and @TimmyKarter for a weekend by the beach. Join us!
Thanks to the staff at the Black Rock restaurant in Clacton who looked after us and the great people of Clacton and Jaywick.

As a kid I used to holiday every year in Jaywick in the 70s-80s, you wouldn’t believe how lovely it was - best beaches in the UK with friendly people
Blimey, you’re an old git now
Me too, we had a caravan in Jaywick and visited several times a year. Sad to see how those places (Clacton and Jaywick) have been treated.
Yeah seems like a typical sea side town. The type that is only good in the Summer many of these types of town in USA. Looks fun!
There used to be a bloke there lived in a giant barrel ! No idea if he is still there .
I've been watching your videos for ever now brother. I literally fall asleep to these vids. I see myself wherever you are. It takes me away from my daily problems and worries. Your content helped me through tough times. I hope to travel with you some day bro. Much love from Tucson AZ.
As an American who has never been to the UK, the random UK videos are just as interesting as all the other videos. Thanks for mixing it up.
In the 90's there was a nightclub on Clacton Pier called 'Oscars'. Once in a while they would open the pier for all night raves. Top House and DNB DJ's, PA's, you name it. The Prodigy played there in 92. Many global DJ's played sets there.
Blur played a gig on the Pier also and it was epic.
The town definitely struggles, but there are some good people there who stick a few of the important things together, so to speak.
This is definitely a proper feel for how the UK actually is than the usually touristy videos you're probably used to seeing. We'd welcome you with open arms brother.
I find them heart breaking to see the level of decay in the former greatest empire in the world.
@DougieL I bet the Prodigy gig was amazing. Was it pre- or post their Experience release?
@@ytsm It was June 92 and The Experience was released September 92. (I can't recall whether they played any tracks off it or not?). There were tracks that featured on The Experience that were already around before, (they got a remix of sorts for The Experience), so I think we possibly heard a few and then also some proper originals like Your Love and original G Force etc... It was an epic night!!

To be fair, we know our back yard better. But who's going to these kinds of seaside towns? Some right shitholes that were once beautiful. As a Scot, I have fond memories of Girvan and Stranraer. But I went down there recently and nothing's changed - they're frozen in time. And for the elderly that's fine but the young folk need change and new stuff to do. It's just too hard to come by in these places isn't it? And so, no one is going to them to visit.
My only hope is that these tough financial times bring back the staycation and maybe we see some life coming back to our grey shores!
Primitive? Too kind!
How brilliant is Bald?! He travels all over the world and films humble homes to share with viewers worldwide. Then he goes back to England, films the average town folk and shows the world that people are pretty much all the same. Cheers Ben!
Because he paid for his travel and fixers. He doesn't go anywhere that he can't pay a fixer for. Lad couldn't even cross into America. Took a plane home from Mexico. Not a real traveler, just a paid for traveler.

As a person from England thanks so much for documenting my country it means so much to see us represented like this. I live in Wetherspoons and love a stick of rock for every third meal .
The people are amazing based on this video. No matter how small the towns might seem, the people are just absolutely lovely. There's something about a small town where everyone is just trying to survive that makes people feel like real neighbors. I was smiling the whole video just watching how the Brits are all so lovely to eachother. I would love to visit. I'm from Washington State USA.. very similar feeling from small town to small town.
Great video sir, and respect to you for being so kind to that man who had his caravan vandalised.

I live a few miles from the town B&B lives, when he's here. I don't honestly think there's much to be gained from him only visiting the worse parts of Britain, as worse is pretty much the same the world over and doesn't tell you much about a country.
As a resident of the UK I find travel videos here compared to almost every other country dull and boring but maybe it’s because I live here
It will cost to much .
@@ItsVisceral I feel the same. Mind you, we are, apart from winos and drunks, a much quieter lot than in many countries, which is not ideal if you're making a travel vid and the locals don't really want to talk to you.

For a foreigner that lived in the UK, I can say that engels people are one of the most chatty people out there.
It's amazing how after dozens of videos around the world, the UK really is just like any other Russian provincial town, but more expensive.
and the diet and prospects are dire.
You know, as a Belarusian, I have to say that compared to our cities, the cities of Great Britain seem a bit cramped. I don't mean the size of the cities, but rather the space on the streets. It's as if you are somewhat cramped, it's the first time I felt something like that.
@@Lirix_Flamma agreed. I'm in the UK now and I hate walking on the sidewalks with someone else as I feel the car mirrors might hit you or the cars can hit your arms if you swing too much. Also the roads are basically one big lane. London feels like a relieve to me because there is actually space to walk and move about safely.
There are very few little towns in Russia that can be on level with this one, believe me. They were established after 60s for scientists and somewhat conserved a decent culture level of people and architecture. And you are lucky if you live in those. Others are basically chaotic villages with some old houses and decent town hall at the center, with roads and pavements looking like they've been damaged by an earthquake
@@Lirix_Flamma that's how it feels here, we're a heavily populated small island.

Cant get enough of BEARD! keep it up man.. loving the videos!
The banter on this video is so loose, refreshing and friendly. Just reminds me of how uptight and serious I am myself and that I need to relax more often, but the stress of bills and work drag me down.
yeah you cant help but be affected by bald’s positivity at least a little
Genuine banter like this is fine, it's nothing personal just people having a laugh with one another, problem is so many people are rude and disrespectful and try to disguise it as banter
After watching B&B interacting with non-Anglos all over the world, it comes as a reverse culture shock seeing him joking and laughing with his fellow countrymen and women.
Does it pay the bills faster and make work more fun to be uptight and serious? I don't think so, give yourself space.
Mr. Bald has been a good example for me, he’s a great guy. I’m a tad uptight and on-guard when I’m travelling. It keeps me safe but it’s hard work at times.

I’m British, working class, northern and even for me the last place, Jaywick, was pretty shocking for me to see; a place so bleak, devoid and derelict within proximity of the capital. London council uprooting, moving and shafting people. Class content as always Bald, shedding light on people who don’t often have a stage or voice.
Jaywick..full of Jeremy Kyle contestants
I've realized the North(&, by that I mean Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Durham & Northumberland are actually very decent places to be), compared to most of the country.
Jaywick seems like paradise compared to Middlesbrough
I don't know how true that is about London councils using it as a dumping ground for undesirables. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who end up there as nothing is available in London council housing.
Jaywick has an ongoing fight for a massive reinvestment program, but it's got so many issues it's very hard to sort out. I would not be surprised if the next government tightens up controls on the standards of privately owned social housing (which at the moment is a disaster) and a lot of those properties are either modernised or removed.
Maybe it was a nice video for his American viewers but as a Brit, I kind of knew what to expect as everybody heard of Jaywick and know its history and what it’s all about. It’s just sad.
I also don’t believe about dumping people into Jaywick from London.

The problem with a lot of sea side towns in the UK is cheap holidays abroad, most were incredibly busy thriving places once. However the dawn of cheap flights abroad that were readily available and affordable to many people meant people moved away from the British seaside. Less money coming in inevitably led to a downturn for many of these places.
Yes that’s the same over here in the Netherlands. Going abroad is cheaper, and usually guaranteed good weather.
Yeh that and the European Unions fishing policies. Destroyed nearly every single fishing fleet all around the country.
In sweden we dont have that problem. Guess it has both to do with the weather in summer being quite nice here. And also a mentality among people saying its nice to be on vacation in your own country.
@@mattmcintosh3939 offcourse its the EU's fault again. So is it significantly better now whitout completely overfishing the seas, or what?
However, I remember in Hastings in the 90ies allready, they had to throw away lots of fishes on the beach, cause they were forbidden to sell or something, or overstocked or something 🤔...

Great content - Captivating and Engaging. 3 bits of new info: The Torbay area of Devon (Paignton, Torquay and Brixham), which is equally as deprived in parts is I believe, officially known as The English Riviera - which I think is because of the palm-style and Mediterranean trees and rocky crags that line the coast.
Piers were originally built for the paddle-steamers which came down from London, they were a form of landing port or jetty.
Finally, and boringly, if you look out from Clacton, you will see firstly the North Coast of Kent from the Isle of Sheppey eastwards to Margate. Then overseas, possibly a five mile stretch of France, from Dunkirk up to the border of Belgium and then entirety of Belgium. I’d be surprised if Timmy wants to go anywhere with them again after how rude they both were in their videos 😅
😂^
It would be cool if he just stopped "collaborating" with Timmy, aka stop letting him leech of his fame and success. lmao
@@om8245fr, o Ben einai malakas😂
@@HappytreeLuis nah Timmy is a good dude, I'd rather choose Timmy then Ben or Simon 100%.
Great episode. Funny. People seem very lovely, and it's great to see this place is still English. 👌 I feel for the hardworking english people.
that jaywick could be such a nice place....that sunset was awsome......
You guys are simply so down to earth and bringing so much joy! Just... friends hanging out and exploring, love it!
Have a great ending of the year Ben & we'll see ya in a better 2024 🫶
