The reason why Totie Fields was great in this episode was because even though Chaim (aka "Gene Simmons") Witz was trying to shock the audience with his "The Demon" persona, she saw right through it and could tell he was a mensch from back in Eretz Yisrael. "Is your mother watching?" "Just a nice Jewish boy." "You can't hide the hook!" That's why she called him out.

Mike Douglas had the Rolling Stones on US TV first before anyone and then KISS! He really had an open mind like Ed Sullivan did and Merv Griffin did. They all had cutting edge Rock acts on their shows first and helped promote them to become famous and household names across America. TV was the best way to reach millions of people instantly. Elvis and the Beatles benefited from TV the most!
This footage is what UA-cam is for and best at! It’s like a cultural time machine you can go back and relive moments from the past or shows you missed the first time around like this one.
It’s all preserved for posterity on UA-cam. Which is why I love UA-cam!
What an episode! It’s amusing how Totie Fields sees through Genes act and isn’t intimidated by it. She even zings him and makes jokes at his expense. Very entertaining!
Thanks to whoever uploaded this. I’m a KISS fan from back then as a kid but I didn’t see everything and now I can this show again.

Why in the US do you convert all slavic people to jewish? Judaism is a religion and not an ethnicity. So being jewish is a simple choice, an etnicity you have a lirrle less choice in the matter and KISS is a slavic band. DO THEY LOOK LIKE JEWS? I couldn't care less what your religion is, its like leading with being attraxted to men, DID I ASK YOU?? but dwelling on the religion is crazy...but I think in the US...slavic is feared and that makes me grin.

Totie Fields (to Gene’s left) was a legendary comedienne who died in her 40’s from a blood clot. She was on Laugh-In and used to tour all over the country. Loved that she was on this show and delivered some ball busting to Gene, which was normal and expected on Mike Douglas and probably why she was booked on the same show . Part of the early Kiss act was to be outrageous and play foil to the status quo.

I’m always impressed with Peter Criss’s understated drumming in this clip. Very tasty fills in the pre-chorus sections and that little flam ( or whatever the precise terminology for it is) he uses right as they’re coming into the second vocal stanza is GOLDEN! Very subtle and probably nothing he’d ever have used at a live gig. But here on this small soundstage he could use it to great effect. He really was perfect for this band at this stage in their career!

Mike Douglas was kind of like the mirror image of Dick Cavitt in terms of talk show host style. He was the totally square midwesterner, while Cavitt was the farm boy who moved to the east coast and became educated, urbane, witty, and was in tune with the art of his guests. What they shared was that both instinctively understood the power of television as a mass medium and delighted in promoting entertainers.

KISS essentially launched in popularity from 1974 through 1977 and beyond...in the face of quite a few naysayers. This was a big part of the KISS history. KISS was like the weird, skinny kid from down the street who swore one day he'd be a muscle-bound ladies' man...and while people scoffed....it happened. Today, the guy they're laughing at is valued at almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

What? Glam happened a good 5 years before punk. The original Alice Cooper band were wearing makeup, heels, and dressing in women’s clothes as early as 1969… five years before this interview/performance took place. The glam thing was much bigger in the UK, but it was also happening here in the states in cities like New York, L.A., San Francisco, and a few others starting around ‘72. The most outrageous band of that whole scene was the New York Dolls, and I definitely don’t need to say where they were from.
In other words, by the time this happened in ‘74, it was already played out enough to where the only people who found it ‘outrageous’ were the squares in middle America. Courage had very little to do with it. It’s not like the members of KISS dressed like this in their everyday lives. They were performers. It was all just showbiz.

In 3rd grade, Fairview OK, we had a talent show. My 3 friends and I went to our principal to explain our pitch for a KISS lip sync. Maybe he'd heard of them by then, but we explained that it would involve crazy makeup, spiked boots, spitting fake blood, fire. We did not compete. In 12th grade, another city, we competed in the talent show doing "I love it loud". Got 2nd place. Rigged but a circle complete. : )

At the beginning of the movie Kiss played at Casablancas 1974 grand opening celebration and the fire sprinklers came on and ruined their gig, wonder if that’s true. Anywho that brought me to Mike Douglas 1974 show. Gene’s spitting fire was epic and what a beginning. That show was so kind to this band, I’m sure Casablanca had something to do with them getting on the show.
