Hey guys! Thanks for watching this video :) If you have any questions please ask them here in the comments and I’ll respond when I can. Also please subscribe to my channel if you want :)
And for anyone reading this… I feel it’s important for me to emphasize that you absolutely do NOT need this much gear to make great music. I’ve spent my entire life fueling and expanding my passion for music technology, I just find it infinitely mesmerizing, and each instrument has it’s own unique type of inspiration to offer. But please understand, I do not want to make anyone feel overwhelmed or discouraged. Hits are made all the time with nothing more than a laptop. It’s not about the gear… it’s about what you do with it.

I know nothing about any of it, except USB. I can tell it is true that USB is not just USB. You would think that since there is a standard, then it doesn't matter, but it does. It is why you can get one USB cable which works to one device but not to another, even the standard it follows is the same. My guess is, that in the cheaper end, USB cables are maxed out to the standards either way (because any standard needs space to work within you will never get anything totally precise), such that if it is plugged to a device which is a little more precise in the standard, it doesn't work. You can see this with both normal USB and mini USB. But just notice, that just because a USB cable doesn't work for one device, doesn't mean it doesn't work for another.

@@NeonVines Thank you for pointing this out. A lot of what makes great music Great Music is indeed Strong Songwriting. Consider Chelsea Wolfe's "Grime & The Glow" (Tascam, 8 track). Or Fairuza Balk "Dream 45" (recorded on an iPhone on an alley using natural reverb), or some of Phil Collins' biggest hits... what would be considered Supremely Outdated equipment by today's standard.
For those going through "gear acquirement syndrome", yes, an extra piece of equipment can be like a painter getting another colour to add to a palette, but... sometimes the limitations themselves can really be what causes an artist to create some of their best work.

First off, you might try rough mixing thru the grotbox speakers earlier on, as it allows you to slot your critical midrange elements from day one in the process. Bass "bark", snare ring, kick beater, etc.
I totally get the attempts to streamline your workflow. Not just for you, but to keep the creative flow moving when other musicians are involved and the energy is resonating around the room. Nothing halts that...feedback loop...quicker than pauses to re-route, or chase down signals.
Over time, you may find significant benefit in mating up the jam rig to the full studio. Here, we run even the most basic jams and composition sessions into a full DAW framework. Set up to be super quick, super simple, super transparent, but... NO need to re-start a project, where you attempt to re-create that subtle groove and energy you had when you first stumbled onto the idea. We rarely use the original tracks but we DO use the grid, tempo, and groove energy that gets captured "first time out", even when we have no audible click. Just...add onto the original.
You probably ARE pushing the edge of what the twin analog mixers offer up. Not at all dissing analog...I have a Mixwiz here, along with a rack of 20 BSS transformer isolated, 4 way mic splitters, solely for piping signals thru to get the A&H silk, and the throaty growl from the BSS pres. The splitters double when out capturing, live show A/V for editing, streaming or both.
The earlier you implement some major patchbays and digital signal routing in the workflow, the less time, familiarity, and workflow efficiency you lose later on when you do get forced to pull back and rebuild, because you've maxed what noise floors and impedance rolloffs in chained analog multiplexes allow you to do, at your ever increasing standards for audio excellence. I use a Z-Systems Optipatch Plus, which routes 240 digital audio signals, via fiber optic pipes, which do NOT cause ground loop noise WHEN you outgrow a single 20 amp A/C circuit. Last count, like 15 PCs and 18 interfaces, connected via infinite flexibility, using user programmed routing presets.
The idea is to spend way less time building the studio and way more time exploring it. Again, workflow efficiency, but here the workflow overview time frame is measured in decades, not minutes. There is a... certain kind of creative synergy... that only happens the deeper you get into an interconnected...and larger...pile of gear. Sometimes, I think some of the equipment connects ITSELF to other gear when I'm not looking. Move over, Cyberdyne Systems, the beast has become self aware.
While you're looking ahead to your next, and for as long as possible, last, studio build, don't forget some phat MIDI pipes, gigabit ethernet, and SDI video ganglion...it all goes smoother when it's all integrated from day one, not tacked on as an afterthought.
Keep up the phenom work...people that know music recognize your talent the minute I feed em the link. And...
    ...have fun.
    :-)

Probably worth a disclaimer at some point that one can make bangers with a daw and headphones, so folks don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of gear and not just jump into production as a result (maybe?) Also, with this amount of gear, do you ever feel like you have too much optionality, or is it always nice to have novelty? Keep up the great work and please put our more tunes!

The way you go about presenting and explaining everything about your gear and how it's all set up and routed is perfectly in-depth enough to have me learning and still keeping me interested, and that is a fine art to master.
