Wow look at that, when Ciaphas Cain was told that his ship would divert him to a possibly dangerous dig-site, rather than being angry at the tech priest he took the call for an adventure in stride, and when the first sign of danger showed he immediately took charge of the situation. But when it seemed the where about to be over run by those xeno abominations, he made the heart wrenching decision that sacrificing the last soldiers to save the only sensible tech priest on the site was the only option to make sure that the new found knowledge of the archeotech was preserved. And when he and the tech priest were cornered by the vile xenos, he valued the tech priest life over his own! So he bravely stood in front of the tech priest to shield him in the hope to buy enough time for the priest to escape. Moved by such a brave selfless act of sacrifice, the tech priest gave his own life in the believe that the Imperium would need him more in the future than himself. All hail Ciaphas Cain hero of the Imperium.
Cain would be the only member of the Commissariat they would ever tolerate, let alone enjoy. Cain would be a welcome drinking buddy of Inquisitor John Sargeant and his retinue.

Cain comes across as a far more likeable version of the flashman novels, except where flashman is a genuine coward and bastard, Cain seems to be a genuinely brave pragmatist that beats himself up for being scared and having a tendancy for calculated self preservation in one of the most horrific settings ever conceived. Always appreciated his method of 'just stay alive for 5 more seconds, maybe by then there will be some new way to grab another few seconds that's not obvious right now, the rest looks after itself'
The number of times Flashman throws somebody off a boat, wagon, sleigh, cliff, or horse for his own wellbeing and preservation is in the dozens, Cain at least does not practice this on the main (but perhaps he just has too many people with him when her does it).
Alex Stewart (Sandy Mitchell is a pen name) has stated that Cain is very much inspired by Flashman. And it's lovely irony that the 40k Flashman is a substantially more pleasant and courageous man than OG Flashman.
I'm always a bit shocked by how many people want to read Cain as courageous. We have Uriel Ventris for that. Cain spends 70% of his time terrified and 30% on the make. He is cowardly, morally weak, with the ethics of a jackal. He seeks out the safest position he can find and steadfastly puts as many people between himself and danger as he can. Any good he's done has been by accident while desperately trying to save his own ass. Don't take my word for it, listen to his narration. He's at best a charming rogue, at worst a plain dealing villain. That's what makes him awesome. If he's not as bad as General Flashman, it's not for lack of trying. Absolutely wonderful character, and I think BP Captures his voice extremely well. Always saw him as a blend of Flashman and Blackadder from season 4. Jurgen is, of course Baldrick.
@seannyhan2254 I think he's at least a touch better than a flat-out coward. There's a scene in the third book where some of Cain's soldiers are on top of an enemy tank, meaning Cain finds he can't order Jurgen to fire on it. Amberly points out that Cain never considers ordering Jurgen to fire anyway, as many commissars would easily be ok firing through their own soldiers. So he least doesn't willfully shoot through his own ranks, which is something
It's always been my headcanon that Cain really is blessed by the Emperor. I mean, he sees himself as having bad luck but he always manages to survive, and he always manages to land the Imperium in a better spot than before he got himself into trouble. So I guess while he sees himself as definitely not being the hero the Imperium deserves, he's definitely the hero the Imperium needs.
"Leave well alone... unfortunately, it's a phrase the Adeptus Mechanicus seem incapable of grasping..." Cain is making a *_massive_* understatement here.
