Nicest way to flip someone off ever. I'm grateful for Grimaldus giving me this gem as I have already used it many times IRL. The look on some peoples faces. The way he says "what" is perfect too. Also when Grimaldus says "nevertheless, waiting is what she'll do." He knows there is no one above him on Armageddon.

The best part of this is that as the video progresses, the quality of the animation and the details that are drawn improves and expands progressively. Not just a result of the animators getting better as this (originally being an episodic animatic) gained popularity, but also a beautiful way to showcase how this entire movie is a from-memory retelling: The further back in memory you go, the more details which are lost and the fuzzier/less clear the memories become.

I myself rationalized it as part of BTs', and astartes as a whole, incredible focus on battle and almost nothing else - their minds automatically blurs out/omits certain parts of their attention and memories to better remember fighting, as if nothing else in their minds actually matters. Battle experience eternally preserved and pristine, while everything else, just fades, remembered just enough to have consistent timetable of places, faces, actions, ready to be recalled if needed, but otherwise, very low on totem pole of priorities.

One thing that always gets me with this beautiful story is that it really puts into visually perspective the “grim dark” of 40k. This battle is a microcosm of this universe. That last stand at the temple really sets it home. You’d normally see, in Hollywood movies, the group of soldiers getting saved last minute when all hope was lost. Not 40k. No reinforcements, no final daring plan, just death and cold corpses. It really is kinda shock when you are so use to seeing them all come out alive.

But overall, I find the 'saved at the last minute' trope as alive and well in 40k as any other long running fictional world. How many times in the lore, stretching from the Horus Heresy to the Indomitus Crusade, do we see a protagonist, pilgrimage, platoon or even whole planet surviving and even winning because whichever force shows up, out of the black void or the wild blue to beat off whichever faction is just on the cusp of eating or vanquishing all hope?

Of course, this is why we love it of course. However, it pales in comparison to real human history and the grim darkness that is our past - hell what it still is today...

We stand united in our thousands, our weapons without number, our purity without question, and our hearts beating courage through our blood. And this is how they attack us? Brothers and sisters, a legion of beggars and alien dregs wheezes its way across the plains. Forgive me, when the moment comes, that they whine and weep against our walls. Forgive me that I must order you to waste ammunition upon their worthless bodies. I have heard many souls speak my name in whispers since I came to Helsreach. I ask you now: Do you know me? Do you know me?!"

Never again will you serve as you serve now. No duty will matter as much and no glory will taste as true. We...are the defenders of Helsreach. On this day, we carve our legend in the flesh of every alien we slay. Will you stand with me?"
    "YES!"
"Sons and daughters of the Imperium, our blood is the blood of heroes and martyrs. The xenos dare defile our city. They dare tread the sacred soil of our world. And it's not just in the Helsreach novel, basically every account we have of this man from inception to his latest efforts he just gives zero fucks about the Imperial infighting and going through proper channels and just says "Yeah, you're going to do this for me" and the madlad makes them do it every time.

That when they’re outside of it, it’s almost as though there is a haze clouding their vision. Battle brings them clarity, and, if my theory is correct, they are able to focus easier in the thick of it. If this is the case, this is an amazing way to communicate that to the audience. It’s a great example of “show-dont-tell” and, again if I’m right, is an amazing way to reveal the lifestyle of a black Templar marine to the audience.

This is just outstanding. I wasn't initially a fan of the animation style, but by the end I came to realize just how fitting it was to the overall aesthetic.
Very few animations I've seen have so well captured the "feel" of the subject matter. Granted, I'm an Ork fan, but still, this was just superbly well done.

Grimaldus bringing back a Princeps Majoris from the mind impulse landscape of a Imperator class bipedal assault titan is the kind of legendary feats usually attributed to Legionaries and the greatest ofnall known Astartes of the great crusade.
This feat and this feat alone marks Marek Grimaldus out as one of the greatest Astartes to have ever taken up the heraldic cross to commit to the Eternal Crusade.
He sees the heart of people as a navigator sees the sacred fire and light of the Astronomican. A firm guiding light yet not a sure road to the final destination.
The remark "You have beautyfull eyes" and his calm, respectfull, silent manner that he accepts it shows such a deep feeling and understanding.
Everything else is the human inside of him. Just a warm yet so well held back humanity.
He is unique in the lore of 40K.
Almost as unique as anny Primarch.

Yes, i think he is one of the most "human" and likeble charachters. Generally guardsmen connect to our normal life more than SM. That being said about andrej's story, it is the way of 40k in general; a post-modern semi-realistic sci-fi which is tragic but also beatiful and well written. Most of the horus heresy novels are also like that, lots of the charachters die at the end. They are sort of a honored-martyrs of the god-emperor, as we see at the end here as well. Glorious stuff!

These are the realities of running a sustainable war effort and it took 9 days to break it all down for 1 city. imagine running that for a whole world, for a system, for an entire crusade? the fury of dorn is amazing but I have definitely been sleeping on the power of administration

Setting aside the fact that Guilliman is a Primarch and would have had the entire forces of the Ultramarines and successor chapters behind him, I do believe that Guilliman would have been able to prepare the entire Hive city for war in mere hours. "If you do what I say, how I say it, when I say it, it will be plenty time". Grimaldis is a leader. An Astartes of legend. But he is no logistician nor a strategical leader. He is woefully inadequate to save the city without sustaining the extreme losses that they did. A full Titan. An Imperator Titan.. which if utilized well probably could have won them the war of Hellsreach.. and destroyed the Orc Titan (I don't know what they are called) with "ease".
Comparing a Astartes to a Primarch is like comparing a human to a Custodes. There is no way to live up to the same expectations. So naturally it is not intended to diminish Grimaldis. He still survived all this without even a hint of thought to flee. He fully intended to die alongside his brothers.
I do believe Hellsreach did have a chance. It would "just" take a Demi-God to actually do it. Or a full Company of Imperial Fists (the whole Chapter probably would have made it easy).
As far as strategical and logistical planning, the war of Hellsreach would have been "easy" for Guilliman. The man wins wars. If he had been present himself as well, the Warboss would have been dead before even wettening his Choppa or firing his Dakka.

The thing is people who are not familliar with 40k do not get these things and think "Grim is now broken" or stuff like that; but us 40k fans know whats going on; the martyrdom, honor, sacrafice, faith and the peace that these charachters have, we are quiet familliar with that. I read this book a long time ago and I recommended it to my wife who hasn't really dipped her toe into Warhammer 40k, was surprised when she actually bought it and read it. She would put it down to ask "what is this", or "why do they do that" questions, I love it, and I love sharing the lore with her. By the end of the book the was tearing up, I asked her what was wrong she said "his squad..." (I teared up there too when I was reading it not going to lie). By the end of the book she downright cried saying "poor Andre" (that was me too my first reading)
