    Times change. The ones we watched the TV Program Kung Fu will never forget David Carradine's work, because we enjoyed it then. Bruce Lee was different, he is a leyend. Perhaps if the TV series would have been produced these days, the situation could have been completely upside down, and Bruce Lee would be the main character.

    I thought so too, until I saw his performance on a tv series called Longstreet where he played a more less violent Caine like character and played it well, Bruce started acting since he was a kid.

    Bruce Lee could play a peaceful character, I thought he couldn't until I've seen appear on a TV show called Longstreet. Lee has been acting since childhood.

    Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, California USA in 1940. His family moved back to Hong Kong a short time later. He was actually of three citizenships as Hong Kong was under British rules- so that makes him American by birth, British and Chinese. His mother was half Chinese and half German, making Bruce a quarter German. He retained his American citizenship and even graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle.

    Even Bruce stated that he understood the hesitance in giving him the lead in a series, not only because he was Chinese with a high voice and noticeable accent, but because he was relatively unknown to the public. Watching him as Kato and in Longstreet, you can see that he was still learning his acting and martial arts on screen crafts. He wasn't very charismatic as Kato. Later, he was a charasmatic phenom. Maybe the move to HK pushed him to push himself. All things happen for a reason.

    Bruce was simply in talks with Warners and Paramount about possible series pilot ideas. One idea was The Warrior about a martial artist in the Old West. The other was a modern setting. Neither of these was the Kung Fu that came to be. Bruce was later considered for Kung Fu, but Carradine was always the first choice for that particular series as they wanted a passive, serene character. Bruce was only known as Kato then and Kato was no later Bruce Lee phenom. Superstardom came to both as is.

    Just becuase we see bruce lee in all these intense and fighting roles only doens't mean he can't act. He's played many roles in his earlier days and those roles aren't about martial art or intense fighting. So I think he would have done an even better job the "Kung Fu" series.

    seraeph: Agreed. David Carradine was a wonderful actor (and was great as Kwai Chang Cain), but it WAS Bruce Lee's concept, and wouldn't it have been great to see him in the part. As for the martial arts facet of the show- With all due respect to Mr Carradine, he would have lasted about five seconds with The Master...

    Hollywood should be ashamed of themselves. They had the person who was born for that role and they didn't use him. It's sickening. I wish Bruce Lee didn't die so young. What a waste of talent. More importantly, he seemed like a very honorable and giving person who was not appreciated during his lifetime.

    The whole appeal of this series (and perhaps the main idea ) was that it was about a Western guy that was trained in Eastern martial arts and philosophy! Had Bruce Lee been the main character then the appeal would not have been there! It would be like having Al Pachino playing the part of an alter boy or something!

    Bruce Lee did NOT come up with the concept for the Kung Fu TV series. That's an urban myth created by the 1993 movie 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story,' which was loosely based on an autobiography by Bruce's widow, Linda Lee Cadwell. The Kung Fu TV series was originally created by Ed Spielman, who was a TV writer based in New York City. Spielman was fascinated by eastern martial arts, and after doing extensive research he wrote a draft of a movie script in the early 1960's that he pitched to Hollywood. This was years before Bruce Lee was even working on The Green Hornet in the late 60's. Spielman even has documented licensing and copyrights to the characters and the story. After the script languished in development for several years, Warner Bros. ditched the idea of a feature film, opting instead to develop the script into a TV movie in the early 1970's. Bruce Lee did come up with a concept for a TV series called 'The Warrior,' about a Kung Fu master wandering the old west, but that was the only similarity to Spielman's concept. The name of Lee's character was not "Kwai Chang Caine," the characters of Master Po and Master Kahn were not in Lee's story, nor was the plotline about Caine having a bounty on his head for killing the Emperor's nephew, or Caine searching for his long lost brother. Ed Spielman considered suing the creators of 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' and Linda Lee Cadwell for defaming his work when the film was released, but the death of Brandon Lee that same year prevented that. Speilman didn't want to file a lawsuit against Cadwell when she was mourning the death of her son.

      Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story didn't suggest that Kung Fu was Bruce Lee's creation. In the scene when Bruce Lee and his producer discuss the show, they acknowledge the show is the product of others, yet Bruce Lee was considered for the role, and was excited with putting his creative input into the show. Of course none of the rest of Kung Fu's characters and general plot were Lee's: Dragon never suggested that either. All the film discussed was Lee being excited about the role, and that concept would be a great way to introduce aspects of Chinese culture to Western audiences. Even though Bruce Lee didn't play Caine in the end, I still think they should have hired Lee as the choreographer, because Kung Fu's fighting choreography was not consistently good. Carradine varied from fighting competently to fighting like a weak drunk. (One of Bruce Lee's students, who partly choreographed Circle of Iron, told Carradine that he was a joke when it comes to martial arts). I commend Spielman for coming up with the show, the Kung Fu was inspired, but it also could have been much, much better. When Kung Fu got it right, it got it right: the rest of the time, the morals and stories of the show were not done very well, and weren't completely dramatically satisfying or executed well. I still remember that one episode when a Chinese assassin clan sent a ninja and a samurai to kill Caine, even though there are no ninjas or samurai in China (their Japanese, and samurai are not assassins). Additionally, there were wasted opportunities for many fight scenes on that show. Kung Fu, after all, was the first of its kind, the show needed consultants who really knew the culture better than the creators. Anyway, the one scene in Dragon did not warrant a lawsuit, and it was a good thing that Spielman didn't actually go along with it... But without a doubt, Bruce Lee, as a character in the show or as a choreographer, would have definitely improved the show somewhat.

      @44excalibur 9 років тому +2

      Cephalopod51 Watch the movie again, and it pretty much implies that Kung Fu was entirely Bruce Lee's creation. The scene with Jason Scott Lee and Robert Wagner shows the two of them apparently coming up with the entire storyline together, even though that story was Ed Spielman's and not Lee's. The actual TV series that Lee wanted to develop was called 'The Warrior.' And the fact was the Bruce was never seriously considered for the role because Spielman felt that he lacked the serenity that the role called for. But Ed Spielman is never mentioned in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, nor is it ever mentioned that the show was someone else's creation. The movie misleadingly implies that Kung Fu was entirely Bruce Lee's idea, which was false, and a lawsuit was not entirely uncalled for.

    • @Cephalopod51
      @Cephalopod51 9 років тому

      44excalibur You have a point about it misleading. And I do know Spielman's reason for preferring Carradine, though I don't think it was the deciding factor. The studio execs were the ones who made the decisions, and having Lee star in the show was too risky a decision at the time. Carradine has the look of being serene, but he still could not fight, which is why I'm not quite sure if Spielman's reasons for choosing him. He was chosen because he could dance, but Lee was a better dancer than he was. But as I said before, Carradine could have benefited from having Lee as his instructor. Besides all this, it would be nice to be able to read Ed Spielman's original script pitch for Kung Fu and Bruce Lee's notes for The Warrior, and to compare and contrast them. I wonder how Lee would have developed The Warrior if he had got his way.

    • @44excalibur
      @44excalibur 9 років тому

      Cephalopod51 It is true that Bruce Lee's name was mentioned as a possibility for Kung Fu, but he was only known in the USA for his role in The Green Hornet and wasn't considered bankable at the time. Carradine had already been in contention for the role when Warner Bros. had been contemplating making it a theatrical release before deciding on making it a TV movie and later a television series.
      Lee was under contract to WB at the time because of The Green Hornet series, so that was probably the only reason his name was ever mentioned as a possibility for the role. But Ed Spielman's script had been in existence since the early 1960's after he wrote his first draft in New York, long before Bruce Lee ever came to Hollywood.
      As for the differences between Spielman's idea and Lee's idea for The Warrior, as far as I know, the Shaolin masters Po and Kan were not in Lee's story. That was entirely from Spielman.

    • @44excalibur
      @44excalibur 8 років тому

      ***** Sorry, but Bruce did not create anything having to do with the Kung Fu series, and his wife, Linda, doesn't know shit. Ed Spielman has documented proof that he originally wrote the first draft of Kung Fu back in the early 1960's, years before Bruce Lee was even in Hollywood. Bruce's script was called "The Warrior," and it had absolutely nothing to do with the story in Kung Fu. Bruce's character wasn't named Kwai Chang Caine, there was no Master Po or Master Kan in Bruce's script, and Bruce's script had no subplot involving the character killing the nephew of the emperor. That's the truth, and it's all documented fact.

    Kids would disagree, but it is impossible to decipher what the show would be if Bruce Lee starred as Caine.
    Personally, I feel despite his eastern looks, Bruce Lee would not have fit in as a Shaolin monk. There is just so much antagonism in his looks. On the other hand David C, with his western looks, brings more realism to this role. There is this peacefulness about him which exactly stands for the philosophy portrayed there in. This show is more about Buddhist philosophy than Kung Fu skills.

    If you have watched the series, I think you will understand why they chose David Carradine for it.
    Nobody, I honestly think, could have done it better.
    Bruce Lee could not have played the character Kwai Chang Caine the right way.
    Yes the fighting scenes would have been amazing but really.
    This series, these stories are simply not about glorifying fighting.
    They are about doing the opposite.
    Bruce would have not liked it that way.
    He would not accept the scripts and would never have pulled off Caine’s very humble character and choice to only use kung fu as a last resort.

    Let me answer your constructive comment objectively.
    1 Carradine's acting skills are a subjective matter. If you read my comment, you'll see that this is just my opinion and why. You may not agree, but that is just your opinion and I fully respect it.
    2 Other half of the comment reflects that something is bothering you. Maybe if you realize that showering abuses on someone you don't know doesn't benefit you in any way, it would help you zero in on what's bothering you at this moment.
    Peace. :-)

You can thank that for not being able to have box-sets of TV re-runs of Bruce Lee in Kung Fu... And to Chuck's credit, he did win several tournaments, wich is more than I can say for Bruce. But as an actor and philosopher, Bruce Lee certainly was better than Chuck.
