Just did that a couple days ago and it really sweetened it. Also browned the ham hock really well in the same Dutch oven so the flavors were great. Took a very long time but it was worth it.
I must have skipped over like 5 other split pea recipe videos and decided that yours - like always - is the best. You don't sit there and talk about your life story and the impact the soup had on your as a child for 12 minutes. You just start in with "here's what we're making, let's go" and it's fantastic.
I tried this recipe tonight and it turned out really good. This is the first homemade soup I have ever made. I kept the video next to me in the kitchen and I had no trouble following along. Thank you!
Split pea soup is eaten in Finland a lot, but we soak the whole peas for 12 hour, and then boil them. Smoked bones and ham and marjoram are added and simmered for few hours. Eaten with mustard and onion. Excelent stuff.
It has been a decade since I've made split-pea soup. We're guests at an Easter dinner tomorrow so I won't have a nice ham bone to simmer to make it. In lieu of that, I bought some ham steaks this afternoon to make a pre-Easter dinner of split pea soup and ham. I used your recipe with a simple Cook's bone-in sliced ham steak. I made a half pot but went ahead and used the entire ham steak which was close to 1.5#. Nothing wrong with a bit more meat! It was delicious. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Finally an American who seems to know what he's doing with this dish. I've seen some put in liquid smoke, and saying you want some of the split peas with still a bite, and more of that nonsense. This clip is just good. I'd personally put in leeks instead of onions, and a cup of cubed celeriac is great, but your recipe is very clear and easy to follow, and the end dish looks great.
good one. I used sausages instead of ham. The original Dutch recipe is so complicated that I never made it. This was easy and to be honest the best I ever had :)
Mmmm, cornbread! I usually don't like sweet cornbread but I I wanted another recipe to use up some super coase ground cornmeal I had (called "Red Floriani") so I tried the Bob's Red Mill cornbread recipe on the medium grind cornmeal package. I made double the quantity and baked it in a hot 12" cast iron skillet. I sliced the cold leftovers into thick slices and froze them stacked as is unwrapped in thin plastic clamshell food containers. When I wanted to reheat some I just toasted pieces in my air fryer. That toasted the outside made it into a wonderful cornbread rusks! Still tender on the inside but golden brown outside. Best rusks you could wish for! So make more cornbread than you need and make rusks quickly whenever you wish!
I make split pea soup pretty often. I'll use either a half of a ham steak, one or two smoked ham shanks or hocks or two or three smoked pork neck bones. Any of those work just fine.
I never liked peas as kid but when was about 22-23 I went to my aunt's house after working outside in the cold winter weather of Maine and she had a homemade pea soup with Ham chunks in it and she said try it and I was kinda concerned into it but ever since that I love pea soup 😂 great stuff! Going to make one here soon
Split peas are super cheap when bought in bulk, so I have been adding them to my stock of preps lately. A little curry powder is tasty when mixed in to the soup.
Been cooking for MANY years; recently received a free whole ham so deboned it and made a ham broth using the bone & bit pieces over 2 days. Done the ham & bean soup recently so trying split pea for the first time. Threw some things together then decided to look at some videos when I came across yours, very similar to to how you made it and that makes me feel good. Your videos are the best and I hope mine comes out as good as yours!
There is nothing like hearty split pea soup on a cold day. I like to add some chicken boullioun to the water, and also to use kielbasa instead of ham at times for a good flavor.
I've tried a few different recipes through UA-cam. This one is the best! It's the real deal! Only difference I made was added fresh chopped garlic and a little bit of olive oil during the last stage.
@@anahivelazquez7017 My ex incorrectly claims canned green peas are different peas. Split peas and canned peas are processed differently. The soups will be slightly different. After the peas melt into mush, I can't tell the different.
I cut the recipe in half (kind of, I only used half gallon of water and one pound split peas then used full recipe veggies and ham) and I also added celery. I had purchased a ham steak just for this soup. I was SO pleased with how this turned out.
I sweat leeks and celery instead of onion for a new twist. I like how you added bay leaf. It takes an hour for ham hock to soften and impart flavor. I add a bit of sour cream on top just before serving. Hearty and healthy
Really like this recipe. Only thing I did different was I sauteed the onions, carrots, ham cubes, and minced garlic first, giving it a richer, roasted flavor. Then I added them to the boiling peas. Near the end I took your advice and added some half and half. This soup turned out so good, I couldn't believe it. One of the reasons why is because I haven't made split pea soup with ham in over 40 years. Your recipe was presented so well that it gave me the confidence to give it a try again.
I always get good recipes from here and from the comments as well. TheWolfePit taught me about that stuff which is better than bouillon. I never heard of that but you learn a lot of things about cooking on these channels. Making this today. This was a favorite Lenten recipe in my family, but I’ve never prepared it, so I’m trying this one today. I have a ham hock because I love the flavor, and I have some ham that I will use as well. I remember Mom mashing the peas, but your recipe has them getting mushy all on their own.Thanks.!

Hell I use country ham and it’s great. Usually one ham hock, one thick slab of country ham, and a package of country ham pieces. It’s amazing every time.
Potato flakes are a good thickener for such recipes , they have a very neutral taste so brings nothing to the party but thicking , they swell in volume some so best to add a little and see what you got and adjust further . Great video as usual Thanks

This is a good recipe, it's the type of soup we make in the Caribbean except we add coconut milk and dumplings to the mix
When do you add the coconut milk?
Hell I use country ham and it’s great. Usually one ham hock, one thick slab of country ham, and a package of country ham pieces. It’s amazing every time.
Potato flakes are a good thickener for such recipes , they have a very neutral taste so brings nothing to the party but thicking , they swell in volume some so best to add a little and see what you got and adjust further . Great video as usual Thanks
Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.
I love this soup!! Great recipe Larry!
+Cheryl K (CherylsHomeCooking) Thank you Cheryl!
Also try adding red Chorizo, it add awesome flavour. Great video. I est split peas every week
That's an excellent, easy way to make it. The only thing I add to it is some cubed potatoes and some thick sliced bacon (pre fried) for extra flavor.
Looks delicious to eat and we are cooking the asome recipe

I have tried this soup recipe and it's delicious. I served the soup with some fresh, buttered French bread slices. This is total comfort in a bowl. ❤
