It's a shame but it's not an option for many people. I was so fortunate to have parents who supported me while I chased my musical dreams. I know there are people with far more potential than me, who will never have a chance to achieve it.
It's almost always an option. The question is if you are willing to endure some discomfort and insecurity for awhile. I've been homeless and hungry for extended periods of my life because I was not willing to put a harness around my neck. I survived doing what I like to do, and am good at. (Building and fixing things....) but I do it on MY terms.
And you are awful at music too. So sad.

I've been a musician since the age of 14, and i've always worked the day job to make ends meet. The best advice I can give is to live as cheap as possible: small apartment or house, old used or no car if you can make that work, lowest amount of bills possible, and then work as little as possible so you spend most of your time at your craft. I learned this from reading Aleister Crowley.

I will not give specifics but I earn more than 99% of Germany ( I live in Germany) and I still struggle to get "ahead" in the sense that I struggle to get to a place where I can stop working for more than a week or two. When I was earning minimum wage back in 2017, I had 100x more free time. My income has increased 10 fold but my expenses have also increased 10 fold because I now have to pay higher rent, higher food prices, taking care of my health through better quality food and supplements, my mother needs help because she is no longer getting work like she used to thanks to new AI models, my girlfriends family also always get money from her because they cannot find work at all. It's horrible for most people nowadays. I'm still grateful for what I have. Being able to not work, is a privilege that very few can now enjoy, without rejecting society entirely and becoming homeless/welfare dependant which is still not "free".

Not a lot of people want to create and do things when they can barely survive working 40-60 hours plus a week. It's exhausting... energy, creativity and mental stamina are almost diminished. We should not be working this much for so little. So much talent is wasted that could be bringing us together and advancing society culturally and in other ways.
What he says really hits home for me because being around creative people and doing creative things are exactly how i want to live my life but it's just not that easy...
itdies2dayyo I was working a lot for so little then I decided I'm going to give this art thing a go or just join the "real" work force (i.e. some shitty office job) so I started working just 2 days a week, and began making art and booking shows and within six months I was making almost twice as much as had been as a full-time barista/supervisor from my art alone. It was not a ton of money mind you, but a sustainable wage to pay my bills car and spending cash.
And what came with it was a peace of mind like you couldn't believe like I would have never thought possible. Something akin to what born again people talk about when they receive god only it was because I started doing what I was supposed to do. Like a baptism of divine satisfaction
It's scary to let go because it goes against everything society tells you to do, but once you do it's like entering a new part of the game it feels like cheating, you wonder why everyone doesn't do it, I should have done it years ago.
You are so, so right, itdies2dayyo. We grownups are (many of us anyway) a bunch of sleep deprived, on-edge exhausted people. I'm old enough to remember learning in school decades ago that in the 21st century, people would struggle to find something to do with themselves after finishing their 8 hour work weeks (!) Technology was supposed to free us . . . but now I realize I'm whining and self-pity is deeply unattractive. I've got to get back to work marking papers and I must try to ignore my guitars . . . (sniff, teardrop . . .)
I find the long yawning gaps in between being able to get things done really hard going - waiting for the magic moment when everyone’s schedule lines up just to be able to get in a room and rehearse - once! This is what stops art flourishing in the ‘day job’ world.
Eno, like Wilde, is speaking ideally. In fact, to try to be creative while working 40 hours+ a week is probably detrimental to health (and creativity), but in an ideal world... If mankind was freed from the chains of dull repetitive work.... How creative we might be? And what profusion of ideas, should we share our skills and creative time with each other. Sadly, present society inhibits such general proliferation. It's the idle rich or very fortunate who seem to be the artistic type...only because they have the time to indulge. We are all capable of creativity, given time and energy.

Brian Eno is correct. When I get home from my job, I don't have much energy or time to be creative. And that is all.
I do, therefore he's incorrect (anecdotal evidence for the win).
Is working 8 hours so tiring for you? what about the weekends? I think you need to manage your time better or work harder, if it was true that you can't do anything after working for 8 hours monday to friday then there would be no people that get an education as an adult, or that start a business while having a job, or go to the gym, etc.
Neither one of you is creative apparently. When you waste your brain power hitting keys on a computer or answering phones you hardly have any creative energy left. Creative energy is limited. Plus you have no clue what the persons job is.

It took me a while to get there, but now I'm moving in the same direction. Going to spend as long as I can without a job and working on creative endeavors like writing music and throwing diy shows. Such an inspirational speech.

@@TheDionysianFields Insight! Understanding is a great reward. Understanding yourself helps to avoid stupid conflicts and gives opportunities to make new choices. I've only worked halftime most of my life, and supported myself on that. I'm still poor, and maybe I should have worked more. Had I had any encouragement from family, instead of having to raise myself, maybe I'd have found a good place in the world for me. Still trying. We're sentient, not insects, so we really use try to use our minds more - lol.
I feel oddly compelled to say to everyone that reads this: Good luck to you all with your journeys and I hope you all achieve everything you hope to achieve in your lives. Have a wonderful adventure and I wish you all the best.

Spot on. Worked my arse off all my life looking forward to retiring at 60 so I could paint and write again only to be told I've now got to work till 66. Wish I'd made a creative career for myself in the first place instead of being brainwashed into feeling like a waste of space if I don't work till I drop.

This applies to the arts, but also to so many other aspects of life as well. People aren't taught to seek a meaningful life, but a profitable one.
My take is this: I managed to do music full time, and basically never had a job. But the first 5 years were brutal. I had no money for pretty much the whole time. The two worst times were when 1) my electricity got cut one day and I had to go do random music side jobs in a Dunkin’ Donuts (lol) till I could afford to pay the bill. 2) The worst time was when for 5 months I lived in my recording studio that was next to a highway, in winter, alone, with no kitchen or bathroom. Was a tiny box of a studio. I really think I lost my mind there. I don’t think anyone should have to go through that. The music I made there got me signed, and I’m doing pretty well now, but most of me is reticent to tell people to just wing it, cause when it goes wrong it’s really rough. What Brian is saying is very idealistic, and honestly if that was possible and we could just all live off basic income and make music that would be great. But it seems like a fantasy at the moment.
The issue is the other bad alternative (soul destroying jobs) is arguably just as bad so I think the key is you need to have rich parents lol. Or get lucky enough to have a job you love and do music on the side, or maybe have more talent than me and succeed in music way faster. Idk what the answer is but yea this stuff ain’t easy

I lived in my studio for a bit--had electric pots and kettles for my "kitchen," went to the YMCA to shower. It's not so bad. If you're not willing to sacrifice for what you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice. I'm glad you're doing well now. I think the start is tough for everyone, unless they were born rich.

@@jcar93music No prob mate. After nearly a decade of making music, and 5 years full time, I now make enough to live decently enough. I make a living off of dj'ing, my music (royalties+pub), teaching music production and the occasional mix+master. I live in new york which is crazy expensive but i get by (just about). That being said my dj fee keeps climbing, so hopefully will be able to do that full time soon !
As for factors that helped me get there, 1) producing music constantly and pushing myself v hard 2) networking and connecting with people
@@Kamino I appreciate that insight man. Any advice for an artist wanting to move to the city with no money? Would you recommend it? Do you think it's important to be in a city, or do you think with hard work, you can make it from anywhere? I really wanna be in the city, it's just so expensive. I'm also curious if you feel like you still have autonomy as a musician who relies on that income to get by. Do you find yourself having to do jobs you aren't crazy about a lot? Are your gigs creatively satisfying for you or is it more about the money than anything else? I hope these questions aren't too probing...these are just things I grapple with and ponder as a musician, who wants to work, but doesn't want to feel boxed into doing something I don't really enjoy just to be a working musician. Maybe that's just me being naive? I certainly hope not

Best creative periods of my life were when I didn't have a job.
But I have two jobs now and I'm still pretty creative.
I think the difficult thing when you are young is you don't know how to manage your energy. Jobs are vampires, it takes time to learn how to preserve a bit of blood for your own use.
I loved how he points out that labelling someone a genius "singles out" an individual when really they were in the middle of an active, thriving cultural scene and a product of that.
Eno is talking about the creative process and art. He is saying we are all part of a zeitgeist, and while we're moving through this time, there will people who can articulate what is happening in their immediate environment. These articulations will mark a period in history.
From this standpoint, Eno is FAR FROM pompous because he is saying that his artistic input is ONE OF MANY. It also includes other equally articulate musicians AND also includes writers, inventors, filmmakers, etc. - any creator in that same zeitgeist. In this sense, everyone collectively lays the fertile groundwork from which creativity springs from. This is why you really shouldn't think too much of your individual work.
Eno is really displaying humility by acknowledging the role his environment had on his success, and that he was merely a small part of that. And this creatively nurturing environment is what he thinks is lacking.
Your conclusion is a little black and white, and quite frankly, hierarchal, and very much based on commercial success which is the wrong way to interpret what Eno said. Further, the idea of meritocracy is arbitrary and an ideological construct. If you don't believe this, consider artists who never achieved commercial success but should have because they were hugely influencial and created seismic changes in their field - people like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and every blues artist that came before them. If the world really functioned on merit, the prejudices of the times wouldn't have been been a factor in how they were treated.

You missed the point, just because someone is raised in the same environment doesnt mean they will make all the same life decisions. (Another black and white Conclusion on your part) Where you conclude that just because they had the "exact same upbringing " they should have lived identical lives. Although there are individuals who will be seen as pioneers or figure heads to every artistic endeavor there is no denying the fact that these individuals need a start that is nurturing to their growth just as a seed only will sprout with a sufficient water source. It only makes sense that many of the greatest or most well known artists are those surrounded by many artistic folk during their upbringing. Many people will make bad decisions but if they are never allowed to exist in an environment where they have the option to be creatives then no one will ever know just the capacity to which they can be artistic which I think eno is really trying to get at, and Not not that we must crush and beat down on anyone who stands out as exceptionally talented. @@maxwellboyne2770

After working for 40 years in IT during which I would be writing/recording music when I got home from the 9 to 5, I took early retirement last year. Not a huge pension but I get by. From that perspective, I totally get what Brian Eno is saying. Now I pretty much work everyday on music. Not for financial gain, just because I love doing it. If other people like it too, well that's an added bonus. I've worked on some 'Remote' collaborations during lock down too which is a very rewarding thing to do.
I'm glad you get to do that now.

I'm doing that right now, 5 years into my career. A part of me wants to leave it, at least until I can bang out this album and then let that sink or swim. Just to say I gave it a proper go more than anything. Another part of me thinks that even though the work is exhausting and full time, the regularity of it allows me plan more than the shift workers in the project. Practices, gigs, and everything else are all easiest for the nine-to-fivers because we know where we'll be for the next week, month, and decade
Cool. Now that you have time, maybe you can write childrens accompaniment music for drag queen story hour at your local library.

I'm just saying that there are many people who _can't_ spare any time for creative activity or reducing their hours, as they're stuck on a relentless treadmill of poverty. Given the competitive nature of the music industry, quitting their job or going part-time to pursue a musical career might doom them and their family to homelessness.

I am 37 and l quit my old job after 15 years due to COVID polices . Now l am studying programming, l am living with my parents that supports me, thank God l have no wife or children to take care of and I can concentrate into studying. Though, it's not easy, I completely isolated myself, as nowadays anywhere you go or anything you do, money is pretty much on the first line of the things to go. Wish me luck, as l do the same to all of you!

My parents say that I was drawing from the time I could hold a pencil. I began playing the guitar at the age of 8. My first beginnings in oil painting was in the 6th grade. My first book was written in 8th grade. But I had no direction. At every turn, my artistic interests were thwarted. And so, upon graduating high school, I entered the 9 to 5, 40 hour a week, work force. And in a blink of an eye, the years were gone. I'm 53 now and hoping to make up for lost time. But most of my life is gone. Clearly there are more days behind me than in front of me. Oh, too bad more parents can't be like you.

When I was younger I was very inspired by bohemian artists like Van Gogh who lived for creativity. He pretty much made no money from his own art during his own lifetime..but his legacy 100 years later is that the value of his dedication is huge, both financially and culturally to the world..however, I saw a documentary about art in the Netherlands: the government from I think the 1950s funded for about 30 years a living wage to anyone who called themselves an artist. During that period huge amounts of art was created, and the program showed a vast building filled with millions of paintings filed away..most of which were completely valueless and uninteresting..the policy ended in the 1980’s..I personally believe in a living wage for everyone, it’s something that the Green Party in the U.K. advocate, and I read that even in the USA there are trials running in some cities that provide a basic income…it will probably be the future for humans in an A.I.productive world. The spiritual guru Osho said something like “too much in this world is created, produced, invented..there’s too much stuff..why strive? Simply celebrate being alive and enjoy yourself”

Since leaving art school i've been working in retail and its been the most soul destroying thing ever. I come from a very working class background. Hopefully one day this can inform some great art but I guess we will see. He is totally right. Governements dont seem to like artists much though.

Good luck out there! Try to apply to some fellowships. The US sucks when it comes to supporting artists. You may wanna try to get citizenship abroad if you can sometime in the future. Europe supports their artists.
In a market-driven society, such as the one most of us have to endure these days, “art” have become a very ambiguous and exploited term. This type of society doesn’t understand the natural need for artistic expression. Only if something that our artistic expression produce that can be sold and turned into monetary value can art be of value to someone cherishing current market slavery. It has come to a point now that artists are being called “entrepreneurs” by politicians and political commentators. This is an attempt by the ruling class to neutralize the rebellious nature of the artistic heart. They know that at the heart of creativity lies freedom and non-conformity, and they hate that attitude! Their view is that only if you are unique and ambitious enough, as an artist, you’re worthy of a small compensation and allowed to live a life outside the norms of workplace slavery. The system is set up such that only a handful of people are allowed to live a life as artists in this way. A few are picked out and put on pedestals as examples to show the world what a free-thinking and liberal society we have. But if we examine what these so-called artists are producing we find nothing rebellious or uplifting about what they do anymore. Once they have been chosen by the establishment they tend to only produce stuff that glorifies the ruling orders of society.
The tragedy is that every human being is born with the innate drive for creativity. It is an universal part of being a conscious being. This potential we all have is being harnessed and “harvested” by society for many destructive purposes. Very early on in life our parents and teachers begin their systematic indoctrinating campaigns against the natural drives in the minds of the small children. Accepted traditions, religion, schooling systems and culture will all be instruments in the campaigns against the free spirit within the minds of our children. By the time we’re around 18-20 years old we should be sufficiently transformed into the type of robot that society wants you to be for the rest of your life. Bear this in mind next time you hear anyone propagating the freedoms of todays market economy. It only looks like a free society from the standpoint of a completed process of brainwashing.
Many of us comfort ourselves with the idea that at least we have managed to create a family and reared a few children into this world. -At least we have managed to put food on the table for a few people during our lifetime. If this is your attitude, remember this; -who is really benefiting from your efforts to bring children to this world? If your efforts have been to bring as much benefit to your children, in accordance with their own inner drives and interests, then I applaud you! But if our efforts have just been to bring more slaves to the slaveowners to work their fields of useless activity until they grow old and die, what good will that have produced? Religion, the political establishment and the cooperate world all want just one thing from you; -full and complete surrender to a system that dictates why you have a life and what it is for. Your own inner drives must be abolished and eradicated. These institutions have set up a full spectrum of views and regulations that dictates what’s acceptable, and what’s not. Choosing a life as a free-spirited artist is to say NO to a life dictated by any authority. Choosing a life as an artist is to say YES to your own divine nature and a life as an free-spirited yogi. If there’s only one thing that we should never forget to do in our lives; -we should wake up every morning promising ourselves to honor our own divine right to be our own unique version of consciousness. Never let anyone else dictate the choices you make in life. As long as your choices do not harm others you’re free to express your own uniqueness any way you like! Never listen to anyone telling you that the only way to contribute to the welfare of others is to conform and participate in the money-game and market-oriented slavery that is ruling the planet at the moment.

I could actually relate more to what he was saying, if the idea is that more artists should start to consider whether they want their art to be based on a "job" vs. their free time. I got the sense that he's not opposed to the idea of getting some job that covers the basics, but that still leaves one with ample time to do their art. Perhaps not? Perhaps he meant "job" as in anything that's unrelated to the arts? I, personally, always thought that art as a profession was a bit of an oxymoron, lol.

This is proving his point: where I'm from, firefighters, healthcare staff and cops very often need another job to sustain themselves, and there is a serious shortage of these people as a result.
I committed to working just enough to finance a period of creativity then go back and go again...all the while I hustle, make a little here and there....this led me into many jobs, some good, some bad, some well paid, some paid poorly...I met more people, increased the variety in my skill set....I never 'networked' just worked hard and did right by people...I am guided by intuition and a certain trust that even if things turn to shit, my experiences thus far will see me through...there have been some hairy times and a fair bit of stress but there's equally that in more linear life paths...I get to make music, carve, write, paint, think, build....it nourishes me and keeps me vital...a 9-5 career would've crushed me and I recognised this early in my life...
When I die I will have few regrets, even if my creations are destined to be in the hole with me....I got to do it and to live an interesting life...I am grateful for that

First time I've watched this and, coincidentally, I'm doing exactly what he suggests. It's not easy... and it's not an unqualified success by any stretch... but it beats being the wage slave that I was.
Good for you. I did the same when I was younger. I would play in bands and be lucky to get enough for the petrol home. Being an artist of any kind is a full time occupation. We get ideas at all hours.

It was never ONLY ME, it was the internet, the time and space given to chill and practice, etc... weight has been lifted from my shoulders, and I'm better able to recognize properly other artists, knowing that they represent a context, set of conditions, HUGE history behind their ancestors and so on... dope, thanks.

What Eno envisions as an ideal was basically the way societies were headed in the post WWII years (see "the Affluent Society," JK Galbraith, etc.). This was before the ideals of a rational, egalitarian (e.g. "middle-class) world were hi-jacked by the rich, anxious for revenge at the loss of the power and prestige they had enjoyed before the Great Depression. The Oligarchs are back, more powerful and psychotic than ever, and their madness is projected as the ideal state of human existence. Hence, we have a society where competition, struggle and acquisition are venerated, and the working oneself to death becomes the necessary, even desirable fate for members of the underclass. Eno is right-on here.

I'm working a .2 position as an art teacher, teaching one class a day at a public middle school. To compensate for this, I work as a Teacher's Assistant at the same school. I am highly over-qualified for this position and could be making double what I do now with a full-time position in a higher paying district. But honestly, what I do now is so enjoyable, and the freedom that I have after work every day is priceless. Please, don't fall into the vortex of chasing money. It doesn't last, it doesn't satisfy, it only makes your life more of a struggle. Enjoy this life! It's yours to enjoy.

I think there is a balance you can reach in life. I was in college and overly stressed and depressed. My mental health had gotten worse than almost ever. I left school and work as a bartender now on some days so I can make music and follow my passions at night. I dont make much money but I've been lucky enough to find a cheap apartment and lessen my bills some.

I use two 50 watt amps with a deep cell battery and pure sine inverter to power my amps, looper and effects.. I made very little with just an acoustic guitar.. so I never play acoustic busking

An old guy wrote me a check for $250 a few weeks ago while I was practicing in a park.. I made $130 last Saturday in another park . That was unexpected.. hasn’t been the norm lately .. but I also attract occasional park rangers enforcing the no speaker rule.. then I move the speakers into my rv 😂 it’s worked.. I’ve got a few noise complaints where the cops have shut me down in the parks .. not so much on the sidewalks around town .. but covid has changed things

A big part the money and success Eno got was due to not falling into the traditional path. Many others just like him chose the traditional path (whether due to obligation, parental/children pressures or simply "surviving" by targeting a job to access food and shelter) and they lived fine lives. He never says "don't get a job or you will live an awful life". He also doesn't say "if you don't get a job you will be successful". He simply says try not to get a job". He is simplifying because we're supposed to be able to elaborate on the concept. So yes, millionaire Eno is telling you how he became successful. He didn't get a job. He hustled, created, learned and stiff-armed tradition and traditional routes of work. You can not like it and scream BS and bring politics into it, none of that changes his perspective or the route he took in life.

While I understand Brian’s point ( I know very well that to be creative, you need time) I really would like to know who supported him while he was being creative? Who went to work and paid for his home, his food, his clothes, and all the other expenses of normal life? You cannot survive without money to live on. I would like to out myself as someone who idealised this way of thinking because I didn't want to face people.
I made music, and toyed with making gaming content too, but I could never shake the fact that I didn't connect to a crowd I sung to, and was in fact afraid of them.
Maybe that lifestyle works for someone is lucky enough to have a lot to say (fuel for their art) and can make connections easily, but for me it was lonely, and, given that the only thing I did was make art and stay at home, I felt after time that it was existentially weird for me to expect people to relate to art that came from such a sheltered place.
I will still probably make art as time goes by, but now I will have to get a job and face my anxiety and ineptitude.
Had I been a more healthy and well rounded individual, maybe thongs would have been brighter.
Going through that right now. After all there isn't much to be said and most of the "problems" people sing about aren't really problems at all, so why bother writing songs about those things lol.

I find it interesting all the takes in this comment section and i feel like none of them have actually understood his message. Its a philosophical idea of collective thought, its not about not working or being individually creative. Its about getting the best out of each other, its about knowing ones own limitations. Its about collective enlightenment essentially.
I liked Eno's talk, i have also watched Alan Watt's video "What if money wasnt an object". So we are given the opportunity to create. The topic has many layers, not everybody is a creator or they can be but creation is not only about an artistic practice. We are all trying to survive in this economy, with life's pressures. The challenge is trying to do it, regardless of the obstacles. I know its hard but its worth it, it requires discipline, strength, talent, passion and more but the most important thing imo is that i know it sounds easy than done but the key element is that once you do it, it will provide an immense satisfaction and especially meaning to you life and thats probably what Eno's intention was.
I've been a working full time drummer for a couple years now, I would have NEVER gotten to where I am now if I didn't quit my part time labor intensive jobs. Sure it's a quick way to make a buck but it takes away the most important thing we have: TIME. Time you could be spending perfecting your craft, making connections with other people, and pursuing your artistic career as a whole, as well as how to make money from your art. Part time jobs only get in the way of your success.
Could I ask you more about this? I'm contemplating doing this rn, and even am making enough money to survive on music alone, but am scared to quit my now high-paying 4-day a week day job, since ive had a taste of money now. I lose time, to get strong enough in my craft to be able to succeed in my scene. But I gain money to be able to better advertise what i do - which is increasingly not good enough because of the time stolen from it by my day job for that money.

@@sp123 No dependents. I don't need much to live on. Handed in my notice last Friday. It's done now, either way haha! Estimating I'll be able to make 40% of what I've been making for the moment, hopefully bringing it up to 60/65% in 3-4 months. Regardless, I made the best call I could. Something felt wrong about being in there, and I couldn't even pretend anymore. Couldn't dial it in. I work from home, and without a whip cracked on me, nothing was even making me work anymore. I was beginning to waste these people's time and resources, and it didn't seem right to do that anymore. Going to spend a lot of time on my local street, where street musicians, if they're good, can make a decent living. It will be tough - but this is the path I've taken, and better believe I'm going to give it my everything.
Every student in high school should see this. Plus we need universal basic income.
That is what I battle for as a working class person and I am starting to make progress now in my 40s but also starting to be able to share that with others which I think is the key having struggled through myself I know helping others is the true way out for both the individual and the collective where as I have known many born with privilege who miss out because they do not want to risk giving up something but if you do not then you do not get the scene and that is the thing you really need
Oscar Wilde suggested this very same idea in 'The Soul of Man under Socialism', that mankind's potential can be truly liberated if we free ourselves from the yoke of labour and soul destroying jobs. Oscar also suggested that Art, creative writing....and perhaps simply the process of 'thinking' (truly thinking) is a human beings ultimate goal. To think, and thus create, and to reflect upon what you, I, and all have created, and for such creations to further feed our minds, allowing the process of creativity and intellectual evolution grow.....and to free ourselves of the mundane process of utilitarian obligation.... how beautiful.
Add to that the possibility that humans are on the brink of embarking upon an automated society via self-conscious computers and sophisticated robotics.... perhaps a century from now many many people may be given the gift of true freedom to think and create and grow as never before. Freedom however, in my experience, comes with the responsibility to learn and value how best to use your precious time.

Brian Eno my man! Sometimes, it is such a pleasure to have your own opinions confirmed by the people you respect the most on matters that are completely different from the ones you know them by.
I have personally had in my life periods of time with plenty of freedom and time to spend on my own things, as well as periods where the necessity of labor catches up and requires full attention. The difference is staggering... now I'm not exactly an audiophile, but let's say that I'm quite serious about music. At some point, work was eating so much of me that I couldn't even appreciate music anymore, you're just too tired and your mind is full of shit, of things you have to do the next days or things that have already happened but which leave a strong print... Appreciation of the arts need one's mind to be pure in a way, it's got to be empty, focused, clear. You just don't listen to music the same way when the best conditions are not met, and the difference is HUGE. It's like there are levels of depths in terms of perception. A lot of people won't like what I'm saying but that's the truth...
If perception can come in such different levels depending on the circumstances, I can't even begin to fathom how much they influence creation.

The good things are for the rich and their offspring to enjoy. The rest of us can only hope to survive. There has never been so little money in music for most practioners. Only the rich can afford it now.
It's also never been cheaper or easier for a single person to produce music. If it's good people reward you by paying.
As an artist and creator, I'm thankful that I've had to work at jobs I didn't want at the time. It taught me that the world didn't revolve around me. It provided income so I could take care of myself and others who depended on me. I learned skills that expanded my perspective on the world, as well as what I had to offer those around me. It taught me just how little I knew, as well as made me more disciplined, humble, and considerate of others' needs, feelings, and dreams. Work is good for you. Just be wise and don't work yourself to death. Make time for your passions.
So what you realy discribing here is that ur interactions with other people gave you new perspective and skills. Well basic income gives people the time to spend with others and create big projects with others that u your self would not have even imagened. :)

I said nothing about creating from misery. Scarcity is not a product of a system, but a naturally occurring phenomenon. What I think your position fails to take into account is that there can never be any assurance of provision or supply. Discipline is certainly an internal (within one's own mind) development, but the revelation of its necessity is due to external pressures on the individual. How we respond to external pressure is what determines who we become. We do not need a system that gurantees us equal outcome; rather, simply one that assures uninhibited opportunity. This is only possible when we are allowed to be free, in naturally free and flowing market. We are not dogs who need a master to fill our bowl. We are human individuals, who simply need liberty to succeed or fail on our own merits, disabilities notwithstanding. But that is a different subject. Just remember, the government that feeds you is the government that owns you. And, unlike an employer, you can't quit the government.
I’ve spent years fostering a healthier relationship with my family and it’s been a lot of work. But the whole time I’ve been allowed to live with them and essentially remain financially dependent on them but I feel no shame because I spend time creating things I love and spending time with people I love. Career and money mean nothing if you don’t have the reasons to pursue them.

I used to think that a guaranteed "basic income" would be great for society, but now I'm highly skeptical of it. Disregarding the very serious issue that basic income would have to be issued by an authority (your government) and that now you have essentially a captive population that only survives by the grace of their government (what the govt giveth the govt can also taketh away), an even bigger issue is that I now believe that genuine happiness can only come from having a deep sense of integration and purpose within society--and for most people, that means having a JOB.
Even when we hate our jobs, we often take for granted how important a job is to experiencing genuine happiness. It's very easy to take for granted the economic algebra of need that pushes everyone to find a way to contribute and integrate with society. Remove that and the result may not be the utopia one might imagine. Furthermore, we experience life through contraries. Without experiencing the ying we can't comprehend the yang. Even for artists trying to break out from the system, the daily grind creates a ying that is the perfect counterpoint to the yang that artists chase after. Here you have this cage, and there you have freedom. How can we truly know and appreciate freedom without having also experienced the cage?
While true for men, most women have the option of having children which brings the same or even more genuine happiness and purpose, but when your society is against having children then that's a problem. You could also argue that raising children is a Job and a rewarding one at that.

you have a lack of understanding of how basic income works. it does not cover every expense, it does not lift you out from poverty. It enables you to escape poverty by being able to afford tuition, by being able to buy food to live, instead of starving for the night because all your money went to rent. Just look at how people spent their covid money. 50 percent of people that received covid money in canada used it on education. Please actually do some research.
The way I think of 'money' today is like a 'token of gratitude,' meaning you're thanking and learning of those involved. I'm a financial mess, but each day, if you work on it, it becomes second-nature while your work becomes first-nature.
I love his Message. Beck took the money he saved and moved to Europe to become street musucian. He had to suffer homelessness and lesrn to survive from creating music. Now look where he is today. Its scary but it can be done in the right place just like Eno mentioms scenious. Becks musical exposure was bluegrass as a child and later the avant guarde when his family relocated to California. In Europe ,he was probably exposed to electronic music because of it was flourishing moreso there than anywhere. His song Sex Laws has a banjo solo, a funk rhythm with a horn section and yet it's a straight banger. The message is, if you're practicing in an art ,go to the unknown, find a community of other people on the same journey, suffer, and eventually come back sane and sober.

It was because of my isolation and living with my savings that I wrote my best stories and wrote my best songs...
I came to this conclusion a long time ago--that creative "renaissances" were always active scenes, where people were writing books or music for each other. If you look at the writing scene in New York in the 50s, the writers, mostly from the hinterlands, all read each other's books, discussed and argued about them. They hung out together, went to the same bars. It was a community. I don't know whether such scenes can be created intentionally. They appear spontaneously when the right forces come together. Still, if something is happening in a city, creative people will flock there to be a part of it.

The first week of not having a job is beautiful, but a few weeks later, it turns into an absolute nightmare.
It is 8 months for me now. I struggled a lot with self esteem and started regreting life choices. But I then discovered my passion for writing. I might have finally discovered my freedom. Still looking for work but with less desperation now.
not having a job necessitates you actually doing something other than lounging though, becoming a full time artist or any number of things youre passionate about

Why would it be a nightmare after only a couple of weeks or months ? Many people who are doing 12 hour shifts in factories and repetitive call centres would feel like thats a nightmare at times in doing that.
