There Can Be Only One, Mantra, Tower of Naphtali, Spring Yard, Camargue, Sugar is Sweeter, The Prophet, Con Spirito and many, many more...Man oh man. I owe so much of my 90's electronic music love to this man. LLAP CJ Bolland!
C.J. is such a nice guy, thanks for the great interview. Love his music to name the few favourites: The 4th Sign, Revesignal vol. II, See Saw, Electronic Highway, The Analogue Theatre and many more - Pioneer of electronic music for sure. C.J is one of my favourite artists I listen to including Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Tangerine Dream, Air, Karl Bartos, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Deep Forest, Röyksopp, Transvolta, Giorgio Moroder.
Horsepower is the track! I remember the first time I heard it back in the early 90's. Still use it in the mix to this day. It's timeless!!! con spirito too! This man is a legend!
CJ is absolutely on point about still having to dig to find good music today. Took me about 3 years of surfing though youtube recommendations to find a CJ set for the first time…
It’s great to see a new video with CJ BOLLAND! I have never stopped listening to his music, and always find inspiration in listening to his tracks. I find it odd that there would even be the question of if he was still relevant, if not for the reason his music is timeless then the fact people will always want to hear what inspired those other artists they currently listen to. I only wish the interviewer spent more time on the hardware he was using… there are one or two obscure videos out there with him in the studio but they are short and only give a glimpse at his ‘studio mindset’ and arsenal. One thing I need to correct him on is the statement that it was impossible to morph waveforms with analogue until the polybrute… my MAM (desktop 303) morphs between sawtooth and squarewave, and I’m sure there are doepfer modules out there that morph between waveforms too. There are also modules by doepfer and others that effectively morph between an input signal and a secondary sound source. Anyways, great to see this interview, thanks for making it happen!
This man was the 1st dj i heard rave music in the early 90's & i was hooked i was 18 my mate sold e's in Edinburgh in a club called "banana jax" & i remember this man getting played by the dj & i had a new yorker(£18) & the rest is history.he's up there with westbam if not better thats how good he is CJB#1
@cjbolland total legend. Carmargue all time fave. Saw you at the orbit. In the 90s. Now making music like you did back in The day. Jamming on hardware and improvising live is what I love
It was Christian that undoubtably led me to the path of creating my own electronic music it was the 90's I would take the train to Manchester Eastern Block records in the UK and would always pick out R&S vinyl and would ask the shop to use there turntables and you could see people's faces instantly as soon as you put on a CJ track on such as "NIGHTBREED" and "ZENITH" it just cut through with that incredible original sound. On the same street one Saturday I passed a instrument store and in the window was an amazing looking synthesizer and would be my first a Roland Juno 6 second hand and will never forget the looks on peoples faces bringing it home on the train, I got into making tracks for short films and adverts and really wanted to do more but work overseas would end this incredible time. I still have a lot of my Analogue gear including my Juno and MC 202 and recently have more spare time and would love to get back to creating again as I don't think it ever goes away and the Aturia V collection sounds very interesting.
Wow. Didnt expect this. Nice work. Seen him back in the day, it was mind blowing. Haunting type stuff. The whole rave was standing still in shock, no one knew what was going on. He knew how to trip people out. It was sumthin else i tell ya. I'll never forget that moment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. I'm two years into leading modular synthis as a main source of producing electronic music. It may be a fools errand, but I'm not too interested in working with a DAW at all. For me, working with hardware is what inspires me most and having a medium like eurorack, I feel, gives me the ability to create personal instruments to explore sound design in a way that I truly enjoy. It has been both a challenging and rewarding journey, but it definitely has been rewarding.
I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a CJ Bolland fan. For my money, it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman"
Great interview David see you still have the good ol sense of humour! Old person complaining here.....CJ was headlining Hardware 9 at Shed 14 many years ago and he never made it... what happened?!
Thanks mate 🙏🙏 There was a moment when CJ couldn't make the trip to Australia way way way back in the 1990s, if I recall. This was a time before the internet!
CJ Bolland, born in my hometown of Stockton-on-Tees! I thought I could detect a north-eastern twang in his English! When are they going to erect a plaque?
I had a Kawaii Q-80, an Ensoniq Mirage, and a Roland MKS-50. So much of a pain to use them... but I really loved making music on them. I had a Yamaha RY30... but we won't talk about that.
Those Camargue remixes are Leftism tier classic electronic music! Starship Universe was really good too..his remix of Prodigys "No Good.. " is proper ooof too.
Thanks for this! Really enjoyed this interview and the silly relaxed vibe you guys have together. This guy is part of my musical upbringing! Greetings from Belgium!

Waarom zou hij terug naar de Electronic Body Music gaan ? Ik zie een scène die wel nog bestaande is maar waar amper vernieuwing is en vrijheid in stijl keuzes heel beperkt is .
I wonder if CJ was influenced at all by Joey Beltram ( both in my top 5 all time tecno ) , but Beltram ( he's diverse = Energy Flash , Aonox ) .... started producing music for sale 1990 ... early , same time frame as CJ , just don't know if either influenced the other ... at all ??!?! I'd speculate neither influenced each other in early '90s , since one was living in NY , one in Belgium . However, they were both on R & S record label , pretty much at the same time!
CJ was producing in 1990 also & as mentioned both signed to R&S Belgium records but I don’t think he was influenced but obviously both had a love for techno music not that jungle rubbish that took over the UK scene by 1993 that’s when the techno DJs shone like Colin’s Dale & Favour Dave Angel Cj Bolland Joey Beltram Jeff Mills etc. Thankfully as I never could get into the breakbeat/jungle genre before it became D&B. Techno all the way for me. Legendary DJ & Producer is CJ. 🕊️👍🕊️
He was talking about the 2001's 😊 At least it sounds like it was the early 2001's because the puke that came before was utterly destroyed by the beginning of the 2001's. In the early 2001's Techno and House came back the were intended to be listened to. At least for those who wanted to hear it. That all happened in the year 2001 and it lasted during the entire early 2001's.

thanks to lads like you the real techno scene is still alive!!
Hearing CJ Bolland single out Horsepower makes me feel less typical about wanting to say... how fucking mad was Horsepower!!
CJ is absolutely on point about still having to dig to find good music today. Took me about 3 years of surfing though youtube recommendations to find a CJ set for the first time…
What an absolute treat. CJBolland was a big influence for me growing up in the UK. Brilliant.
Totally agree. Saw him at the orbit in Morley first. Awesome. And a massive Inspiration for how I make music now!

In my opinion they are absolutely terrible, should never have been released! His fairly recent track 'Fire' is top tier though

Absolutely
CJ Bolland, god that's a name that takes me back to the nineties. Funny to hear him speak, kind of a weird English/european accent 😂
He's still got quite a strong north-eastern English accent - he was born in Stockton-on-Tees.
