  • In this video, I take an old Lane Cedar Chest and give it some brand new life! This was my second commission piece and I loved that I was able to use this lovely POP of color - Antebellum Blue by Dixie Belle Paint Company. This commission piece was quite challenging but I am so thankful for the help from @BrushedbyBrandy that helped me combat the water stain! I know it may not be the perfect way to fix that stain but you heard it, the client loved the piece! Thanks for bearing with us this week and waiting for the video, we will see you Monday!

Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (😬) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.

I don’t like doing custom pieces but when I have done them I always put it all in writing and I have the customer sign off on the color. I grew up in Kansas, but in my 40’s moved to CA. 59 degrees is cold here. I’ve come to the conclusion that it has to do with the ocean air or something that makes the temperature seem colder than it does in other areas of the country. I know what cold winters are like, but I’d never felt as cold to the bone as I have in CA when its in the 50’s. It’s very strange.

I wish you were closer. I have a cedar chest that I got from my grandmother on my 12th birthday that I'd love to have redone. What makes that extra special is that her grandparents had it made from the headboard and footboard of their bed for her 12th birthday. Considering it's 107 years old, it looks pretty good, but it needs some attention.

Tip for you: set your piece on paint/stain cans (under the body of the piece) so the feet are elevated off your table. Then it’s easier to paint the bottom of the legs without getting paint on the table.

The recall was issued because at least 14 children suffocated playing inside the Lane chests before they discovered they were sold with faulty locks.

That way if they got the finished piece home and decided it didn't match they couldn't argue I didn't give them what they wanted.

If I were going to splurge on any of Dixie Bell's products, it would have to be the gator finish.I love the way it looks and it seems like I would have to put many coats of a regular poly to get anywhere near the same durable finish.I have a cedar chest that my Mother gave me in my early 20's.I sanded, stained, and polyed it about 15 years ago and have been using it as my coffee table. Now I think I want to re-do it in the 2 tone look but with a more muted version of that blue.Love your videos. You definitely didn't get paid enough for your labor.Maybe give the client a range (exp. 10 to 20 hours) so you can adjust for unseen issues.😊

@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher Lauren!! This turned out AWESOME! You definitely did under sell yourself - all that finnicky work to fix all those blemishes! Perhaps you should start giving a sliding estimate and give a total when it's done?? For example with this piece to tell them up front that the total will land somewhere between $200 and $300 depending on what it takes to prep things or fix things. That way you can either surprise them with the lower number or they'll be paying what they expected AND you get what you need for all your hard work...? Great job on this one too - so gorgeous! Loved this video, thanks for making it and always bringing such great value to your viewers!! See you on the flip side 🙌💪❤ Sarah from Canada

I enjoy watching Furniture Flipping Teacher videos and have learned from all of them. This particular video stood out to me. It is spot on to what I'm interested doing to fix up furniture and bring it new life. The content is very comprehensive. Thanks Lauren!

Thank you, for discussing the problem of dealing with discoloration on the top. I'm currently working on my Lane Chest and ran into the same problem. I was about to give up and paint until I saw this video. I have the added challenge of having had to remove a large chunk of veneer due to a bad move.

The piece is gorgeous. Since it is a coffee table, I would have painted the back as well.

All the furniture restoration channels I watch use Oxalic Acid to remove water stains.

Interesting fact about Lane Company cedar chest and other furniture that they made....the serial number read backwards is the date that the piece was made. An older piece, if it has the papers with it like Lane Cedar Chest do taped or stapled to the top on the inside top, increases the value up to $700. In original state, the value starts at around $400. Lane Company was in my area. My sister worked there. Very sad that it shut down. Thx NAFTA! I've been researching to see if they are made still but by another furniture factory. Btw, Lane Company was in Altavista, Va. I am in Danville, Va., 35 miles south. 😊

I wanted to send you a picture of what I did to a mahogany secretary, painted with The Chippy Barn, Amulent, “Quiet Night”. Sprayed the knobs silver, changed the top design, sprayed the glass, and now really enjoy the piece as my own. Is that an option for your viewers, to share with you their projects that turned out very well? I was encouraged by your teaching to begin and complete this project. Thanks

When re-staining what I almost always use three 000 steel wool pads. It helps with removing stains scratches imperfections. And you can use it as the applicator.

Gel stain works well with laminate tops. You can lightly sand then apply the gel stain, it will make a damaged laminate top look new with little effort.
