- In this video, I take an old Lane Cedar Chest and give it some brand new life! This was my second commission piece and I loved that I was able to use this lovely POP of color - Antebellum Blue by Dixie Belle Paint Company. This commission piece was quite challenging but I am so thankful for the help from @BrushedbyBrandy that helped me combat the water stain! I know it may not be the perfect way to fix that stain but you heard it, the client loved the piece! Thanks for bearing with us this week and waiting for the video, we will see you Monday!

"please bear with us, we have an active neighborhood".... *child skips behind in background* 😁😁😜 love it.
Binge watching your not so old oldies. You get better every day.
I so appreciate your attention to perfection rather than being in a hurry. I appreciate people that do the best job possible.
Yes! I would much rather spend that time getting it right than an unsatisfied client (:
Thanks for watching!
You are adorable, hard working, intelligent......such a special young woman! I am proud of you!
You are so kind! Thank you and thanks for watching!
When you said "top coat time" I heard "TACO time". Got excited there for a moment.
Im learning so much from you that I had to go back to your beginnings to really understand your growth. These early vids are an example of 'start where you are' and 'be patient with yourself'. Thank you... you really are the best teacher I have encountered on YT. Looking forward to taking your courses soon..❤
Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (😬) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.
I love how you pay so close attention to detail.
Watching you working on these projects is quite meditative. 😌
At least you have Brandy at your finger tips for advice. She is the queen of Dixie Belle. I wish I could call her when I have issues. You could always use Coffee Bean as a stain. I really enjoyed this video
I don’t like doing custom pieces but when I have done them I always put it all in writing and I have the customer sign off on the color. If I have to change something I issue a change order and have them sign off on that as well. I was laughing because I’m in California and 59 degrees to us is so cold ❤️
Haha. It is like 60 degrees, in PA, today, and it is so warm, I am in shorts. I will be so glad when the cold is gone for a while.
59° is cold in California! I totally agree
😹 it is funny. Here in NE TN it got up to about 60 and everyone was so excited over the "warm" weather! I guess where you're located makes a big difference!
@@barbaramobley8845
Yes I think your blood gets acclimated to the temperature.
I grew up in Kansas, but in my 40’s moved to CA. 59 degrees is cold here. I’ve come to the conclusion that it has to do with the ocean air or something that makes the temperature seem colder than it does in other areas of the country. I know what cold winters are like, but I’d never felt as cold to the bone as I have in CA when its in the 50’s. It’s very strange.
I wish you were closer. I have a cedar chest that I got from my grandmother on my 12th birthday that I'd love to have redone. What makes that extra special is that her grandparents had it made from the headboard and footboard of their bed for her 12th birthday. Considering it's 107 years old, it looks pretty good, but it needs some attention.
It turned it gorgeous! Brushed by Brandy is one of my favorites as well. The customer was thrilled. I always undercharge…but the store I am at won’t let me any more. I let her price my stuff because she will get twice as much for the same product. 😍

Me: bedtime...
**gets notification about a new FFT video**
Also me: Not bedtime yet.
**watch video**
Awe - too funny! This one is pretty long too! Hope you enjoy! (:
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher love how it turned out. Gorgeous color on it.
I agree! FFT is my favorite furniture flipper! I’m also totally invested in hearing about her paying down her student loans!
Tip for you: set your piece on paint/stain cans (under the body of the piece) so the feet are elevated off your table. Then it’s easier to paint the bottom of the legs without getting paint on the table.
Great job on the chest. The color is beautiful.
it is obvious to me that she knows this obvious tip and
has no current need for it.
Re: the recall on Lane cedar chests
The recall was issued because at least 14 children suffocated playing inside the Lane chests before they discovered they were sold with faulty locks.
Your client may not know about the recall or the reason for it. Her cedar chest may not be from the years affected by the recall but I would at least make sure she is aware of it because she may have small kids in her family
Lane will provide the safe new lock for these cedar chests at no cost.
@@rosebud5102 Yep! I got one from them
@@lorikw I always disable the Locks completely on Vintage Cedar chests actually leaving a little airhole. No one needs to lock up their linens anymore.
Have you seen the statistics on how many children have been killed from IKEA furniture? Things over 3 ft tall (dressers, bk shelves...) falls on the little one and IKEA has never done anything about it, something with the quality of design & materials. : (
@@KatherineTheGr8t they give you brackets to secure the furniture to the wall with and tell you in the instructions to do that, so that the furniture doesn’t tip over onto a kid. Any tall piece of furniture could tip, no matter who made it.
Lauren, you took so much care with that commissioned piece. I'm sure your client will appreciate the final result. It looks beautiful. Perhaps next time, you could warn the client there may be an extra charge if you run into problems whilst restoring the piece. I think that would be fair.
Yes, I may do that. This was such a fun piece and I learned so much! (: Thanks for watching!
So happy to see you wearing a dust mask, I was worried about your sweet lungs. As usual this project turned out beautiful! You are so conscientious and sweet and I love watching your videos. It is so nice to see a young person such as yourself working so hard and putting everything toward paying off your loan. Keep up the good work and blessings to you and your family.
It would be very respectful of her to wear a mask when her customers come over.
It’s a real time warp to go back so far b-c I’ve recently started watching & haven’t gone farther back than mid-2022. Lauren looks the same, but different and just as beautiful as ever.
A Good tip. Spray your finger with FOAMING window cleaner, or the caulk itself and you'll get a clean crisp application and it will wipe right off of your finger!
This color would not be something I would have picked but after seeing this video I fell in L💗VE with the color and stained top 🔥🔥🔥
I agree! I have one and I may have to try this.
I absolutely LOVE 2 tone. I want to do one of my chairs, of my own to see if I like doing it.
Antebellum is my favorite DB color! The first piece I used it on (I copied a piece of Brushed by Brandy’s) I was hooked! I love all things DB actually.
You have inspired me! I’m not for sure my Alabama market will be as lucrative as yours is in Wisconsin, but as my granddaughter and I discussed today, if it doesn’t sale we can at least furnish our own home beautifully!
We are in in Nebraska 🤗
Yes! Flipping doesn’t always mean selling!
Not only do you do beautiful quality work, your work ethic is inspiring! Great job Lauren!
Thank you for your kind words Rebecca 😊
Didn't think I would like the color but in the end I did.
This piece turned out beautiful. The owner really did get a great deal!!
Couldn't agree more! So happy she loved it!
Absolutely gorgeous. The quality of your work just keeps getting better and better. As someone with an elderly parent, I have to say that when a client shows up wearing a mask I think donning a mask yourself would be the right thing to do. Just my opinion.
Thank you!
She told me it was up to me. And the first time she came she wasn't wearing one. To each their own...Thanks for watching!
Another great job! They do make syringes for wood glue that really help with detailed & veneer repair 👍🏻
Thanks for the tip!
I always use Dixie Belle and before the fan decks were released, I made my own painted wooden spoons to my clients could see them and when I did custom blends, I wrote the recipe on the spoon
Love that idea! Maybe once I have my own shop (;
Super idea!
@June Brown Very clever!!
Great tip!
Great idea
Lorn, I was thinking that color was gonna be like a Royal blue. But that color is right on with that color of stain. That is the colors that go beautiful together for high and look and also a country look. I love that they use that color in a country. Colors country setting all the time. I love that color I may have to paint my living room furniture like that gorgeous
When you're wearing something down on furniture make sure you put some padding in between the can so it doesn't dent the wood just an idea you're doing a phenomenal job!
Another beautiful job. You are a great teacher and really pay attention to detail. I am sure your customer was very pleased. Thanks for sharing your work
Lauren! This is my favorite project of yours thus far! I’m so glad your client chose that color, it’s gorgeous and looks amazing with the stained wood top! Great job!
You do such a good job teaching furniture painting! You can use a cardboard nail file to sand in the real tight spots. For example, next to decorative appliques.
Just found your channel, and now obsessed. Have been binge watching all week!!! 🥰
I’m a hairstylist- not the same as what you do but still a creative medium. And to help me ensure I’m on the same page as my clients I would use moodboards and consultation forms to communicate. If you ask your commission client to fill out a quick questionnaire/consultation form, as well as creating a small moodboard that they can share with you.
I’ll share what I teach all my apprentices - A thorough consultation always results in good results!
Keep up the great work ❤️
This cedar chest turned out so beautifully !!
This turned out beautiful. And I love the color. I am new to making over furniture, but I did learn some things from your video such as the yellowing coming through and what product to use to help with that. I appreciate your sharing of your knowledge. I look forward to seeing much more of your projects. 😁❤ Jackie
Absolutely beautiful yet again!! Stunning!! This color combo is right up my alley!! Love love love blue green colors!! Absolutely stunning!! You did yet again an AMAZING JOB!! LOVE THE LOOK OF A STAINED TOP AN PAINTED BOTTOM! DEFINITELY BEAUTIFUL!!
I really like the color. I was surprised the back of the piece wasn't painted since it was going to be used as a coffee table.
I wasn’t sure about the color but I really love the way it turned out. Good job!
I was the same way! (: Thanks!

I don't do commission work anymore but when I did I always had the customer sign off on a sample board. They could touch and feel the finish, take it home and make sure it works with their interior. They signed a contract saying they approved the sample. That way if they got the finished piece home and decided it didn't match they couldn't argue I didn't give them what they wanted.
Good morning Lauren, I loved watching what you do to this beautiful peice, your old friend from Prince Edward Island.
The first time I used Dixie Belle paint I was hooked. I use it on all my furniture projects. Beautiful job Lauren!!!
Absolutely a beautiful piece
Never had an interest in refinishing furniture and yet here I am glued to the video.
I have a LANE cedar chest and they are absolutely beautiful. Love what you did with this.
What a nice lady! No wonder she got the really good deal. Maybe she will give you some return business or customer recommendations as a thank you. Your finished piece for her was breath-taking!
Hey doing awesome job...I did what you did for years. I just want to help answer a comment.. The reason you wrather use a high quality paint is because you will use way less coats that is all labor hrs doing 1 coat and done will save you hrs over spending a few bucks more for better paint.
Brandy is awesome!!!!
Yes!
I loooove Brandy.
Great information that you can put on clear Boss and then stain over it to hide water spots. I've got a Lane cedar chest that I'll be doing in the near future and you've given me some great ideas. Stain looks good. I've used a lot of chalk paints and I won't use anything but Dixie Belle paint. It's the best for coverage. What beautiful color. Thanks for a great video !!
Updating my grandmother's Lane cedar chest to pass on to my daughter is the very reason I've been researching painting options. Yours is absolutely the most helpful information I have found. I'm now looking forward to tackling my own. (after a few test runs on smaller projects, lol). I'm so grateful to have found you and your easy to follow teaching methods!
Another stunning result! Well done Lauren. (You can tell I’m binge-watching you channel hey!)
I watch many similar channels and by no means an expert but do have a useful tip that I saw on another channel which I would love to share with you : when glueing awkward places or cracks, use a syringe to apply the glue.
Well done again, and I love that colour!
On the part of trim on the front another method would be to use a few Brad nails through the face of it to hold the trim down. Using a narrow putty knife first to get some glue under first would be good before brad nailing. It all looks fantastic. I am learning different finishing ideas from you.
Antabellem blue is one of my favorite colors!
Loved it! (:
Outstanding job! I love that you went
the ‘extra mile’ for your client!
This couple always go extra, it’s who they are. Wished I lived closer, I would make them friends.
You remind me sooo much of my sweet niece! 😁 I really enjoy watching your videos and how you transform your pieces! Great job!
If I were going to splurge on any of Dixie Bell's products, it would have to be the gator finish.I love the way it looks and it seems like I would have to put many coats of a regular poly to get anywhere near the same durable finish.I have a cedar chest that my Mother gave me in my early 20's.I sanded, stained, and polyed it about 15 years ago and have been using it as my coffee table. Now I think I want to re-do it in the 2 tone look but with a more muted version of that blue.Love your videos. You definitely didn't get paid enough for your labor.Maybe give the client a range (exp. 10 to 20 hours) so you can adjust for unseen issues.😊
so easy to under charge. I am also a dressmaker and that is a constant problem. the chest looks so chic and client so happy. The tip on how you had to manage the water stains was very helpful.
Despite the several self-appointed social service commentators 🤪, I just wanted to put you onto a product for the tricky edge or corner repairs. Durham Rock Hard Water Putty, it's powder form so cost efficient. I love DB products but the mud is a tiny bit lacking compared to Durham's. IMO. 😮 As for the other stuff commented, just do YOUR thing the way you want. Wear a mask, don't wear a mask, wear ear muffs or don't, sniff the glue or well you know. 🤣 There's going to be chickens pecking you to death no matter how you do things. I think you're very inspirational and wish you great luck. 👍
I love this color. I am so tired of white, black, tan, and brown. I am loving some color.
Southern Indiana is watching and learning.
Yay! Glad you're learning this time!(; Thanks for watching!
Even though there was a tricky moment with the top, everything turned out perfect..And I'm really glad that we were able to watch it all happen since this can easily occur when painting..So it's perfect to watch for people who are just starting off and might run into it. Theyll remember this video and come back and watch it. :)
I think you beat the learning curve in this one quite nicely. We also learned a lot too thank you for taking the time to share with us. It was well worth the wait knowing it was coming out to view. 🌻
Great to know that clear coat sealed the water stains in. Beautiful finish. I’m very surprised you didn’t paint the back as it will show if the chest/coffee table is sitting in an area where it will be seen from all angles.
The customer didn't want it to be painted. The cedar was too beautiful!
I agree, I thought it was really weird too, but the customer is the one paying.
Ohhhh, thank you for explaining this! I must have missed it in the video. Now I can go back edit my comment. 👍😁
I have my Moms Lane Blanket chest with same finish. It was an engagement gift my Dad gave my Mom in 1955. Trying to get up the courage to start by watching your video. I don’t know if I have your patience.
A whole 45 minute video??!!! I am SO SO SO excited!! I haven't even watched it yet and I'm pumped!
haha, Yay! Glad you're excited! Hope you enjoy!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher Lauren!! This turned out AWESOME! You definitely did under sell yourself - all that finnicky work to fix all those blemishes! Perhaps you should start giving a sliding estimate and give a total when it's done?? For example with this piece to tell them up front that the total will land somewhere between $200 and $300 depending on what it takes to prep things or fix things. That way you can either surprise them with the lower number or they'll be paying what they expected AND you get what you need for all your hard work...? Great job on this one too - so gorgeous! Loved this video, thanks for making it and always bringing such great value to your viewers!! See you on the flip side 🙌💪❤ Sarah from Canada
I enjoy watching Furniture Flipping Teacher videos and have learned from all of them. This particular video stood out to me. It is spot on to what I'm interested doing to fix up furniture and bring it new life. The content is very comprehensive. Thanks Lauren!
I have watched this video several times. I have a chest I'm making over and have the same issue on the top. Thanks to you I have been able to fix the water rings and the finish is beautiful. I love your videos - you are always an inspiration.
Im in love with this antebellum blue by dixie bell
Beautiful work. I like to see a perfectionist! Your client will be in awe at the finished product. Congratulations!!
What a great elevation of a vintage chest. Beautiful
Thank you, for discussing the problem of dealing with discoloration on the top. I'm currently working on my Lane Chest and ran into the same problem. I was about to give up and paint until I saw this video. I have the added challenge of having had to remove a large chunk of veneer due to a bad move.
The piece is gorgeous. Since it is a coffee table, I would have painted the back as well.
The customer did not want to have the cedar on the back painted. Thanks for watching!
This gal doesn't usually sit through a long flip video, but u hooked me line and sinker.
I love that stain color! The whole thing came out beautiful.
Thank you & thanks for watching!
I'm so glad you take such pride in your work ,lots of people don't. .love watching.
All the furniture restoration channels I watch use Oxalic Acid to remove water stains.
Interesting fact about Lane Company cedar chest and other furniture that they made....the serial number read backwards is the date that the piece was made. An older piece, if it has the papers with it like Lane Cedar Chest do taped or stapled to the top on the inside top, increases the value up to $700. In original state, the value starts at around $400. Lane Company was in my area. My sister worked there. Very sad that it shut down. Thx NAFTA! I've been researching to see if they are made still but by another furniture factory. Btw, Lane Company was in Altavista, Va. I am in Danville, Va., 35 miles south. 😊
This is a great learning experience! Now you'll know what to do and not be afraid of water stained pieces. You can still make them look great!
I love the solution..I have a piece I have to redo....and a piece to save with water Stains
The tiny human skipping by right on cue
I have a desk I would use Dixie Bell on.
LOVE your videos! Keep up the great work! :)
This is not my color or style but, it looks AMAZING !! I know it is going to be a beautiful show piece for your costumer. ❤❤❤
There was a lot of work going in to this project and it looks AMAZING. Great job as usual. You have the patience of a great teacher. So inspiring. Thank you for sharing your life.
I would paint the sample on a piece of sample wood to show color because it also gives better idea than in a container
Beautiful piece!! Man-o-man that chest kept you hopping!! Great job as always!
Yes! SO many learning experiences! Love the finished project!
Antebellum blue... Looks kind of a Teal shade. Pretty!!! And it's sooo fashionable these days! I love it!
Looks beautiful!
You are amazing!!! This piece turned out beautifully!
Brandy is awesome!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful ideas. I really love the color of the paint and the stain.
Great job. Did she want the back of it painted since it wasn't going up against the wall. It was being a coffee table...👍👍👍💪💪
I wanted to send you a picture of what I did to a mahogany secretary, painted with The Chippy Barn, Amulent, “Quiet Night”. Sprayed the knobs silver, changed the top design, sprayed the glass, and now really enjoy the piece as my own. Is that an option for your viewers, to share with you their projects that turned out very well? I was encouraged by your teaching to begin and complete this project. Thanks
Beautiful results! You tackled the problems and the customers should be extremely impressed! I certainly am in love with the chest!
I’m so glad your client was satisfied after all you did! Great job! I’ve been working on my personal chest for over 3 weeks. I’ve had several issues with it. The one that concerned me was that I couldn’t smell the ceded.
So beautiful 😍
Really like how you go over every step and paint used. It helps a lot. I enjoy watching you.
Thank you very much 😊
When re-staining what I almost always use three 000 steel wool pads. It helps with removing stains scratches imperfections. And you can use it as the applicator.
Gel stain works well with laminate tops. You can lightly sand then apply the gel stain, it will make a damaged laminate top look new with little effort.
Love it!
Another great job! I love the dark stained top with that dark jade color for the chest. I’m loving it!
Beautiful! Think I might rework my cedar chest too.
Go for it! They look so great being redone!
