Brave is a 2012 American animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman (in the former's feature directorial debut), co-directed by Steve Purcell, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, with John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter serving as executive producers. The story was written by Chapman, who also co-wrote the film's screenplay with Andrews, Purcell, and Irene Mecchi. The film stars the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch (Macdonald) who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire not to be betrothed. When Queen Elinor (Thompson), her mother, falls victim to a beastly curse and turns into a bear, Merida must look within herself and find the key to saving the kingdom. Merida is the first character in the Disney Princess line to be created by Pixar. The film is also dedicated to Pixar chairman and Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died before the film's release.
Brave is Pixar's first film with a female protagonist, and the first one animated with a new proprietary animation system, called Presto. Originally titled The Bear and the Bow, the film was first announced in April 2008 alongside Up (2009) and Cars 2 (2011). Chapman, who had just wrapped up work as a story artist on Cars (2006), drew inspiration for the film's story from her relationship with her own daughter. Co-directing with Andrews and Purcell, Chapman became Pixar's first female director of a feature-length film. To create the most complex visuals possible, Pixar completely rewrote their animation system for the first time in 25 years. Brave is the first film to use the Dolby Atmos sound format.[8] The filmmakers created three original tartan patterns for three of the four clans in the film. Patrick Doyle composed the film's musical score. - Фільми й анімація
Guys... I swear I'm not really this pale and ginger... it's just my Scottish genes came out for this video!!!!
Sureeee but also are you gonna post your reaction to hazbin hotel or is it patreon exclusive?
Coming later this week
@@niallnochillyesss super excited!
Your beard is a dead giveaway that you’ve got those ginger genes! My brother’s got the same red beard, brown hair combo.
But redheads are so pretty, I think you look hotter than usual. Also, it was so heartwarming seeing you enjoy the representation, as a latina Encanto is the closest an international movie has done it for me, Coco is second, because it's more specifically Mexican/Central American, and I'm South American, so even though I feel kinship with them irl, it's not the same. I supposed it's how you would feel when watching Irish things?
Fun fact! Scotland actually used to have bears, but they went locally extinct because of hunting in the country. There were some bears around in the middle ages. They were rare even then, but they existed.
the more you know… BRING BACK THE BEARS !! 🏴🐻
It’s similar with wolves, there used to be plenty in Scotland but they all died down or went extinct due to hunting. There has been a loooooong debate or plan of action to release wolves into the wild of Scotland to reduce deer population which has spiralled.
@@niallnochilli’ll totally help you with my illegal cross-atlantic bear smuggling ring

Bears are as common as raccoons over here in PA😂
It just occurred to me that her dad’s story about losing a leg will forever be upstaged by his wife responding, “Remember when I fist-fought him?”
Tbh he seems like the type of guy to love that about her. Supportive king (literally)
Or she might say, "Remember when I fought Mor’du BEAR handed"
@@katiekirks1253 FUCK that’s a good pun.
@@katiekirks1253 Too much of a dad joke for her. She’d say “Remember when I fought him?” And then he’d respond “Indeed, and bare-handed, no less!”
@@bookcat123 Yeah, maybe.
25:03 The moment when Merida realises and we all realise that Elinor wasn't raising her just to be a wife to sit meekly behind her husband and to do whatever she's told. She's raised her to be a queen - to govern her clan and her kingdom alongside her husband just as she's been doing with Fergus. Etiquette, public speaking and history, all necessary skills you need when you're sitting at the head of a people.
She's still selling her daughter off to neighboring tribes and doesn't care if she's attracted by them.
Indeed
Stress-filled job indeed. But better when you have God and family. God loves you. Romans 8:38-39.
@@applefarm6126🚪🚶🏻♀️
Got it in one. All the skills Merida was learning was to ensure that everyone, even her own husband, would show her proper respect and defer to her authority. Even if she and her husband never fall in love, he would never be able to put her down because she has an equal, if not higher, standing than him. If not love, then at least plenty of respect. Which is why Elinor saw it as no big deal and not the end of the world
I heard that originally, Young MacGuffin was actually just going to be speaking gibberish as a joke, but the voice actor suggested having him speak that dialect, since he himself was fluent in it.
That’s interesting
Kevin mckidd, Soap from Modern warfare and Lucious Vornaous from HBO’s Rome
he also voices young Macintosh as well
@@mckenzie.latham91 plus the 344 episodes of Grey's Anatomy he has done 🥰
Yup, he speaks a dialect called Doric!
That's noo dialect that's Ers.
I love how the boys weren’t even scared of seeing their Mom as a bear 😅 they just look to their sister like “why is this bear scolding us?”
Scottish weans are a different breed irl 😂
I really enjoyed this movie and I don't know why people like to hate on it. It's a beautiful story of a daughter's relationship with her mom. And it's so nice to see the parents have such a loving relationship. Like...I STAND THIS FILM!!
I just feel like it's two stories meshed together. Once the bear magic came in it kind of took away from the mother daughter plot line for me
people hate on this film?
@@hellogoodbyeandallinbetween oh really? For me personally, it felt like it tied things together much quicker because they learned how to see one another in a different light and put differences aside because they love one another. I totally get what you're saying though! To each their own! :)
Wait, someone hated on Brave?
I also love the fact that we finally got a princess movie. That wasn't married off to a prince in the end
9:27 My mouth DROPPED when you actually translated that, that was amazing.
i do try my best lol😀🏴
OMG! The first time someone has actually translated this line! And now I actually hear the kid speak the words too.
It was an astonishingly good display of skill. Absolutely remarkable to behold. 🤣
I always thought he was speaking gibberish, you just blew my mind!
@@summerskull9379 fun fact- the script originally had him speaking some Scottish-sounding gibberish, but Kevin McKidd (the voice actor, who is Scottish) basically said "nah, imma come up with a line in an actual dialect, it'll be better"
I took a little, elderly Scottish woman named Maria to see this in a small theater, here; in Jacksonville. We came out of the theater, and every little girl swarmed her, wanting to talk to Merida; thinking that was her story. Maria was so happy to have the attention of all those little girls, it made her cry. It was an honor to spend the day with her. The movie was all the energy she had, but, when I dropped her off at her apartment in the senior living building, I bet she went straight to sleep and dreamt well of home, and that lake of little girls.
STOP THIS IS SO CUTE 🥹🥹
OMG 😭😭😭
Aww, that sounds so sweet! 😂😊❤🎉 Kids are so innocent, man. 🥺🙏👍
Aw! I love this.
OMG STAWPP
Also when Merida goes against her father. She’s a bad ass!!! ⚔️🛡️ she’s clearly a daddy’s girl, but she loves her mom just as much and was willing to go against her father to protect her even though her mom hasn’t listened to her the past.
its one of many reasons why merida is one of best disney princesses although she is also pixar
One of the details of the tapestry that I love is that Merida is the one holding her mother's hand, anchoring Eleanor to the rest of the family that she's so different from in many ways (reserved and brunette versus boisterous and redheaded to start with).
That plus being the only women in the family
omg thank you for translating what that guys son says I never understood growing up! 😂
Lmaooo, even I found him hard to understand later on, he has a very Northern Scottish accent, way way wayyyyy up the top of the country! Glad I could be of assistance
@@niallnochill once you translated it I could suddenly kinda understand it somehow, thank you so much :3
@@niallnochill Yeah i thought the joke was that he was incomprehensible lmao
@@felixhenson9926 Incomprehensible... Unless you're "in the know" ;)
Fortunately I've spent a wee bit of time with the Scottish, so I was able to pick up a fair bit of what he was saying lol
@@felixhenson9926That was the intention. But the actor who voiced him asked if he could use his first language, his dialect of Scottish. That turned out to be just as incomprehensible as they wanted but also perfectly welcome for the setting.
“Our fate lives within us. You only need to be brave enough to see it.” My high school senior quote.
Noice
As a very very curly girl, when I first saw a teaser for this movie, I *shrieked* out loud in the theatre when Merida pulled back her hood to reveal this CASCADE of curly hair.
Bears were roaming Scotland and the whole of the isles till mid 1500's and are found decorating medieval tapestry, metal work, stone work and written documents.
The entire cast is Scottish, and they added true Scot touches to their lines during recording. Nobody was putting on their accents; all were authentic.
That's not 100% true... Julie Walters and Emma Thompson are not Scottish. I do know from seeing interviews that Emma Thompson's dad was Scottish so she had an immediate family member whose accent she grew up hearing. But I don't know if that same can be said about Julie Walters. But other than those two actresses - The rest of the cast is genuinely Scottish.
25:45 "It's just not fair making us fight for a quine that does not want any part of it"
I saw it in a video once.
Edit: Thanks to the person who corrected the queen to quine
Honestly, out of all three dudes, that guy had the most promise.
@@a_bit_n00bish yup
I had a crush on him when I watched it and I was crossing my fingers, hoping she'd choose him. I couldn't understand him and yet he doesn't seem so annoying like that black-haired dude.
omg I was right!
I think in the original ending she actually did choose him
Mordu had 12 year old me shaking in my boots, I was terrified of him. Esp that one show where they made him quickly look at the camera
FACTS I screamed in the Theater when that happened.
Honestly he’s the stuff of nightmares for kids. I thought he was scary but I was never truly afraid of him somehow. And strangely, he helped me get over my irrational fear of a bear jumping through my window at night and eating me.
I had some very specific fears when I was in elementary school.
No because I literally had nightmares when I was young because of mordu and strangely enough those whispy things too
Its nice to see an actual scottish person react. As an american i get tired of people just reacting to the doric in this like "wHys hE SpeAkInG GiBbErIsh" plus loved that you translated for us with less trained ears.
I agree
When i was little, my parents actually called me Merida as a nickname because i have long curly ginger hair too! This movie has become my confort movie as the time goes by. Sending lots of love from spain ❤
That's so cute! Much love back from a fellow half ginger 🩷
That's awesome. 😊
My kiddo looked a lot like baby Merida movie came out. Complete with the wild red locks.
When I worked at Walt Disney World, one of the face actors playing Merida in the Festival of Fantasy Parade was actually Scottish and also a lesbian. We were work friends. She very easily pushed Merida up the ranks to top 3 favorite princesses in my mind. I miiiiight've had a huge crush on her lmao.
I totally read Merida as lesbian or ace, and the meme of her from Wreck-it Ralph 2 really only pushes that further. :D
@@Lochtain maybe, but you don't have to be ace or aro to de prioritize romantic relationships in your life. I loved that that was part of her arc, to not necessarily stay single forever, but to "find love in her own time" as she says ❤
@@K.C-2049 definitely! It's open to interpretation for sure, I just leaned that way because I'm also an ace lesbian. :)
I would have too omg
as an aroace, we can in fact find love as well 😊 it's not mutually exclusive to people who aren't on the aro and ace spectrums. @@K.C-2049
30:11 Sometimes I wish they'd kept their original plan - to see the wisp that the prince had become join three others who were waiting for him....see him reunite with his brothers....
Ooh. That would’ve been cool, and if they only showed 3 wisps at once the whole movie. And maybe some slight design variations to show it is only these 3 wisps. Meaning it was his brothers the whole time trying to find someone to release him.
idk what it was about this movie but me and my sister loved it SO much as kids we’d watch it all the time😭 also fun little fact: merida’s voice actress went to my highschool we still have a little plaque thing in the atrium for her
Yesss we love Kelly Macdonald in this house 🏴❤️
That’s so cool!
25:52 It's just not fair making us fight for the hand of a girl who doesn't want a bit of it, you know?
Is what I've heard the translation is.
You're probably the only person I've seen actually notice the blonde guy was speaking an actual language and not just gibberish 😅 lol
(Ps: I don't understand a word he says, but I know he is speaking an actual language)
I could tell he was speaking for real, and I’m just a Yank. Then again, I’ve seen _Hot Fuzz,_ so I kind of know the trope. ;)
The shipper in me likes to think that in the future Merida does have a relationship with the blonde prince w the heavier accent (idr his name soz). From what little we got to see of all of their personalities he seemed to be the most sensible in a way that I could see him knowing and understanding who Merida is (strengths, weakness’, and eccentricities a like) and appreciating them all rather than trying to change her into something she isn’t.
I think there’s a chance, too. 😊
@@ShinyAvalon He's a bit of an ugly duckling, but he's not hideous, and you're right about his personality and nature.
Plus...maybe he's hung.
Fun fact, young macguffin (Kevin mckidd’s character) was in fact her love interest in pre-production. The alternate ending with them (kinda sorta) is in the official art book.
I thought that too
I absolutely loved it when one of the suitor's clans were called the "McGuffins."
A McGuffin was old Hollywood film-making slang, made famous by Alfred Hitchcock.
A "McGuffin" was something that served no purpose in a film, other than to move the plot along to the next point.
Fun fact, young macguffin was the original love interest before they decided to go a different route - so there’s some meaning to the name there. 😂
25:45 he says ‘it’s just nae fair making us fight for the hand of the quine that doesn’t want it yet’ he’s speaking Doric and ‘quine’ means girl ❤️❤️
32:00 I still stand by my fan fantasy that in her day Elinor was the best horsewoman for miles around.
It would never be king fergus who had the horse man genes, he was clearly too large for riding a horse just like the Viking chief Rollo (gånge-rolf)
Merida is responsible for me choosing the character with the bow and arrow in every game possible, I was obsessed with this movie as a kid
I saw this when it first came out, too... which was not to long after my mom passed. When it got to that same part at the end that you cried at, Merida crying "I want you back" OMG I started sobbing in the theater. I wanted my mom back, too.
Merida fighting her father, who is considered one of the strongest, to protect her mother, is my favorite part of this movie.
I don’t understand the hate this movie got, it’s genuinely so beautiful and has the best vibes fr
I am actually glad it's not your first time watching cause I would have said you should be ashamed. You know how fast my Hispanic ass rushed to watch Encanto. Also if u haven't seen it watch Encanto 😊
Ooooh, should I start my Disney movie journey on the Channel???👀
@@niallnochill YES!!!

Man, Encanto made me bawl on like three times. One of my fav Pixar movies.
Fun fact, they made a new type of animation for merida's hair
These blue lights in the swamp are called "Irrlichte" in geman which means "light that leads astray" and you are warned to never follow them for they lead to the other world /death.
In reality they are gases from the wet ground which burn in a small flame when getting in contact with air. But it is allways better to not follow them, cause they don't lead a safe way necessarily.
And I love the scottish accent!
And in the Philippines they're called "santelmo"!
The fact that he heard Young McGuffin and IMMEDIATELY not only understood what he said but repeated it perfectly had me and my boyfriend with our mouths open 😂
Climbs mountains on days off + trained in weaponry + untamable hair + eats whole apples in less than 6 seconds = perfect aro/ace representation. Love Merida.
Arrow/ace
Yep, as an aro/ace, can confirm I will MURDER an apple in .02 seconds, especially if it's a Granny and I've got a jar of sea salt!
You had me at "Scottish!"
I love this film! Merida vying for her own hand is the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a Disney film! The argument between her and her mom, I felt it when Merida said what she said when she ripped the tapestry and the mother realizing what the hurt she has caused by burning her bow. I feel that these two scenes at my core, the acting is just so good!
If you’re starting your Disney journey, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Hunchback and Tarzan are a must!!! The first two are critically underrated.
My Mum and I took my nephew to watch this in the cinema, but he a little too young and was *SO* frightened by Mor'du in the beginning, he cried until we left. Even though Mum and I hardly ever fought, I'm really glad we sat down to watch this together before she passed suddenly a few years ago. She was definitely a Mama Bear, even when I'd fallen into traps of my own stupid making. Miss her every day ♡♡
I loved this movie because I'm an archer and I never want to get married. Some people don't like this movie, but I'll never be one of them. Thanks for reacting to it!
Every time an arrow is shoot in slow motion, is pure poetry in motion
I absolutely love that they accurately showed the archer’s paradox in motion. I saw one reaction where the slow motion shot they were like “Ohh it’s wobbly!” I’m like, it’s supposed to be. That’s actually how it flys straight.
saw a Scottish ginger watching a story about a Scottish ginger lass, I'm all in!
Aye! Caber Toss! Only a Scotsman could come up with a game where you toss around a telephone pole!
The way I’m OBSESSED with Merida tearing her dress and metaphorically breaking the old traditions and her old relationship with her mother …. CINEMA 🤌🏻
there's actually a little snippet after the credits where the witch's crow delivers all of merida's order
Holy crap!! You're literally the first reactor I've seen who understood what that bloke was talking about!!! Jaw. Dropped.
little Merida and the lil cubs mean everything to me, they’re so damn cute 🥹🫶🏼 I’m so happy I came across your channel, you’re like the scottish version of Brad Evans and I’m OBSESSED✨
I don’t know much about Scotland but I just think it’s so sweet that so much of his movie resonates with him. Just goes to show how important representation is.
I think this is the best reaction to Brave I've watched! First of all, your little facts on Scottish culture and language were just an amazing bonus (and woow I've never seen anyone even slightly understanding the kid and his strong accent, I had read I don't remember where that the voice actor intentionally made it very hard to understand so that was so great to hear somewhat of a translation). And just seeing you enjoy the Scottish part of the movie, that was so great to watch! Brave have been one of my favourite Disney since I've first seen it, the characters, the setting, the music, the story, everything is sooo great about it, so glad you loved it
this film awakens my inner scottish pride any time i watch it. i strongly disliked how much people were disappointed by it and ripped into it. this was a passion project like none other
This movie always makes me cry. It reminds me of the arguments and good times I’ve had with my own mom. Especially the scene where she says “I’ll always be right here.” 😢😊
I LOVE BRAVE!! I'm of Mexican descent, short brown girl, so whenever I get into a conversation of my favorite Disney princess, people always assume one of the darker skinned ones but NAH, Merida is my FUCKING FAVORITE DISNEY PRINCESS!! Her story and just her as a character I really connect with. So I loved how you reacted to this with so much enthusiasm.
I loved the little scottish lessons! my ancestry is Celtic and French but my parents and I were born in America. I love learning things that I otherwise wouldn't in the form of entertainment! ❤❤❤
When I first watched Brave with our daughter and the Mackintosh first appeared, had I been drinking something I would have spit it out…and as the show went on, uncovering his and his son’s special personalities? I called up my sister (yes, during the movie, we were watching it at home,) and told her, “OH, MY GOD, MICHELE! YOU HAVE TO WATCH BRAVE THIS INSTANT!”
She is single without children and asked me why I thought that. I just said, “I will pester you about this until you watch it. That’s a fact. And when you do, you will know EXACTLY WHY I insist that you watch it.”
She did watch it, and immediately called me while she was still watching it and said, “OH, MY GOD! KATHY! TTHE MACKINTOSH IS DAD!!!”😂😂😂💯 and, to be honest, his son was also perfectly descriptive of our dad…vain, highly competitive, short temper, explosive anger, dubious of everyone else’s intentions, basically narcissistic…
Ok…I am a U.S. American. My dad’s family were INSANE, and super proud of their Scots ancestry…I mean, my folks told me not to let my grandparents know that I was babysitting for a Campbell family in the 1980’s kind of insane…(not meaning to be disrespectful, just, why would I be talking to my grandparents about babysitting gigs? We lived 500 miles away from them.)
We just found out we're of Scottish descent, including Campbell of Argyll... I need to go back and watch this again!
Thank you for giving us non-Scottish folk a translation of the blonde suitor with the ultra-thicc accent! I've been wondering for YEARS what he said- obviously I figured it was real, but without any knowledge of the dialect myself, it feels like learning a dead language without a teacher. So, again @niallnochill, thank you! Glad to see you enjoyed this film as much as I did- & there's no shame in crying. It's the power Disney holds regardless of its content lol.
14:43 my fucking water went up my nose I laughed so hard omfg 😭😭
This movie literally made me obsessed with Scotland, I'm literally not kidding. 😂Before, I didn't know anything about Scotland or any countries, but when this movie came out I fell in love. the aesthetics the plot and story in general Scotland is one of my favorite countries. It's a shame that it's an underrated Disney movie, not many people value it for what it really is, but it was so fun to watch this movie with you Greetings.😂🙌
I had a time I was watching anything and everything Scottish/with Scottish accents I could find. David Tennet shows up multiple times lol. There’s even a movie with David Tennet and the voice of Merida, where they are love interests.
I'm brazilian and I always loved this movie so much! It always resonated a lot w me and watching you explain stuff, give context in cultural/ language things I had no idea it made me love and appreciate the movie even more!
3:24 No one usually sees it, but if you look closely, you can see Merida and Queen Elinor in the letters of the title. Merida is in the B and Elinor is in the E. And the circle Elinor is holding has 3 bear cubs in it, symbolizing Merida's triplet brothers.
You are the first one who was able to give us a translation for the blondie, thank you very much! 🤣🤣🤣
The whole concept of a Unicow is actually kinda amazing-

I love the voice actress of Merida. I also loved her in Decoy Bride with David Tennant. Crying with you at the end.
My mum was Scottish, im a redhead, this was the last film we saw together in the cinema before she passed, so this film means so much to me

Have you seen Onward?
My moms friend had a part in making this movie so it holds such a special place in my heart
Honestly this is one of my fav films, i do remember crying watching it first time round
Idk why people hate this movie so much, it's not flawless but it's not nearly as bad as everyone says, either. It has so much unique charm and genuinely hilarious jokes.
It makes me so happy watching someone get excited over this film
You and Welchy both have the best reactions to this movie.
It's probably because you're both Scottish, but my point still stands.
Would like to see a collab of them
Before reading the commment section I literally had no idea that Brave was disliked by some people?? That's so sad, I loved this movie to pieces growing up and now watching this reaction reminded me why I loved it so much
This is my all time favorite Disney movie. I watched it in the theater and came out crying and called my mom. Merida is the best.
I delight the aspects of Scottish culture in Brave, the theme of the movie, that one kid who speaks a dialect called Doric which I hardly understand, Merida is a bold princess herself
I’m glad the algorithm recommended this to me.
Niall, you’ve got such fun editing and a great eye for detail! 👏👏👏
your reaction was cinema!!!!!! and the part when you "translated" what the prince said was actually SO COOL ❤
Merida is my absolutely my favorite Disney Princess. I love that they finally made a Celtic princess and made her strong, no man needed, based on finding your personal strength and value of family and heritage!!!! ❤❤❤❤
It would be AWESOME to see you watch The Little Vampire, a child hood favorite of mine and a very Scottish one too haha.
Every time I watch Merida's speech to her mom, from the first time in the theaters to just now in your video, I cry. I had seen it alongside my mom and sister in the theater, and at the end my sister and I both hugged our mom.
Since i only watched this film in portuguese, i learned so much with your react! and yeah, it´s impossible to not cry over this film, it's soooooo adorable!
love your react!
Love this reaction and thank you for the insight!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!🫶🏼

Loved the reactions. So happy to see someone enjoy this film instead of mostly criticizing it. It's such a heartfelt film with so many good messages and honest human behavior. No one is perfect in this sucker but they all love each other so much.
Watching this again with you brought me to tears.
You're fabulous!! Thanks for the great commentary, I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie ❤

My mom and I went to see this movie in theaters (for context she is so proud of our Scottish heritage. Shes always reminding her kids when its Tarten Day etc) and we both cried during this movie.
