The back of the Beldam's dress looks more like a black widow spider than a beetle shell. Look up what a black widow spider looks like, it's not a beetle shell, it's the back of a black widow spider
Not many people say this so ima point it out. Bobinsky is blue because of the radiation from Chernobyl. If you look at the badge on his chest, it’s identical to the liquidator badge people earned from clean ing the streets in Chernobyl from radiation.
His grandma's twin sister went missing. The doll used to look like her. The other mother changed it and used her magic to send it back into the normal world. She makes a doll for every new victim.
Something from the book that they cut out of the film: There's an even more horrifying eldritch entity. The house/portal itself. The small corridor/portal is a throat. Throughout the book, each time Coraline goes through the portal, it gets windier (is that a word?). Basically, whatever this creature is, it's waking up. And it's starting to breathe more and more. Not to mention that the walls are damp and filled with large chunks of things once the illusion drops. Also: The Beldam is scared of whatever this thing is. So is the Cat. Whatever it is, it's POWERFUL. There's a theory somewhere that the Beldam is a parasite inside of the creature. So she's not the big bad. Which makes everything even scarier.
"There was no brick wall there now - just darkness, a night-black underground darkness that seemed as if things in it might be moving." ... "Coraline took a deep breath and stepped into the darkness, where strange voices whispered and distant winds howled. She became certain that there was something in the dark behind her, something very old and very slow." "The candle cast huge, strange, flickering shadows along the wall. She heard something moving in the darkness - behind her or to one side of her, she could not tell. It seemed as if it was keeping pace with her, whatever it was." ... ""Come on!" said the Cat "This is not a good place to be in. Quickly." Coraline turned her back on the door and began to run, as fast as was practical, through the dark corridor, running her hand along the wall to make sure she didn't bump into anything or get turned around in the darkness. It was an uphill run, and it seemed to her to go on for a longer distance than anything could possibly go. The wall she was touching felt warm and yielding more, and, she realized, felt as if it were covered in a fine downy fur. It moved, as if it were taking a breath. She snatched her hand away from it. Winds howled in the dark. She was scared she would bump into something, and she put out her hand for the wall once more. This time what she touched felt hot and wet, as if she had put her hand in somebody's mouth, and she pulled it back with a small wail." So yeah, the book is really, really good. I strongly recommend reading it, or better yet listening to the audiobook which was narrated by the author, Neil Gaiman himself.
There’s a theory that Vermin or The Cat was once another child that lived at the Pink Palace but either was too suspicious of the Beldam or moved away before she could get him or had a living family or all three but since he interacted with the witch, he was a “ loose thread”. He died having lived a full life but his soul returned as a cat. He failed to save Wybie’s grandma’s sister and that’s why he stays close to Wybie. Both because he feels bad for his previous failure but also because he wanted to be there for Wybie in case the worst happened.
My favorite little detail is the fact that the wallpaper in the intro is a sparrow and a cuckcoo, which is a bird that does brood parasitism, and the fact that the whole doll making intro is done pretty much with the same tools that are used when prepping a corpse for the grave,
This movie scared me as a kid, but it was still my comfort movie and I still watched it every single year at least twice 😂 I was like “I don’t care if it gives me nightmares it’s so fucking good!!!” The artistic integrity of this film is unmatched by anything except for avatar, no other film has been so freaking gorgeous and has such an interesting story
i think you missed the part in the song that’s my favorite “she’s a peach, she’s a doll, she’s a pal of mine (…) we’re never gonna take our eyes off Coraline”
Six month old comment, but I have to say you misquoted the song you so enjoy: Making up a song about Coraline She's a peach, she's a doll, she's a pal of mine She's as cute as a button In the eyes of everyone who ever laid their eyes on Coraline When she comes around exploring Mom and I will never ever make it boring Our eyes will be on Coraline
Fun Fact: The button key was NOT in that drawer until Coraline's mom started looking for it. If you watch frame by frame, the key just APPEARS as she waves her hand over the other keys. Spooky
Which shows that the beldam can manifest things into coralines reality without needing to use the door!! That has MASS implications for when Coraline throws the key down the well at the end of the movie
As far as the grandma goes. Your point about the grandma is actually a theory for many fans. They think that she noticed that the beldam was trying to entice wybie and so she allowed them to move in so that it would take coraline instead. Especially since she lost her sister to the beldam
It also makes his name a piece of foreshadowing. Wyborne as a name actually means "war bear," but as they joke about in the film, it sounds like "why born." I see this as "Why were you born? Now I need to constantly protect you"
@@niallnochill FWIW, in the book i'm fairly certain it's mentioned that coraline's parents lied and said they didn't have children so the landowner would rent to them. i think i'd give wybie's grandma the benefit of the doubt and say she wouldn't be willing to sacrifice someone else's child to save him- plus it's hard not to sympathize either way, since you just know she's been living in terror ever since he was old enough to play outside on his own...
I cant remember where i saw it but, corralines mum broke her neck and im pretty sure she lost her job because of it, corralines dad is the sole provider im sure, the pink palace was cheap and because they lost income they had to move out, so the parents are so incredibly stressed and i don't blame them
Idk if other people already said this in the comments here, but Ms. Spink and Ms. Forcible are a couple! It was confirmed some time ago by the original writer of the book, Neil Gaiman
One of the little details I love in this movie is on the cake they give Coraline to welcome her. In cursive, two loop symbolises smth not true, so the cake is essentially saying Coraline is welcome, but she is NOT home!
One thing I like about this movie so much is you can see it from both persepectives. As a kid, you see Coraline's parents as neglectful, mean, coldhearted, and rude towards their own child when all she wants is attention which is why seeing her being so carefree and happy in the other world makes you think along with Coraline " wow this world is like 10x better! ". But, as an adult you can kind of sympathize with Charlie and Mel ( Coraline's father and mother ). They have a full time job to try and make ends meet. Needing to buy food, pay bills for their new house, and with Charlie working on an old busted computer it makes it even more stressful cause anything can wipe all that progress and that anything just so happened to be Coraline pressing buttons without reading them. Granted they could have worded it better but sometimes parents just don't have time for their kids and when a kid like Coraline who is very hyper and needy for that attention doesn't get it, she throws a fit over it. She wanted the gloves but Mel didn't have the money for them hence why she told her to put them back and why she was shopping during a sale. She only was able to get them after they got paid for their garden catalogue. But as a parent you don't want to tell your kid that you don't have enough money for stuff. My mom never told us no to something because she didn't have the money for it, she was always say " maybe next time " or " maybe with her next paycheck ". As you grow older you can kind of see that her parents were never truly neglectful they just had very stressful moments when they were forced away from the only work that was making them money because Coraline was whining for them. But as we see things get better in the end, they start getting better income from their catalogue, thus they don't have to worry about money as much anymore and can start focusing on their child.
another detail is when the other mother creates all those meals for coraline as family dinners, she never eats anything, her plate is always empty, the only time she does eat is the 'chocolate' insect in the drawing room
I had somehow never noticed the cat stopping Coraline when she goes out to throw the key down the well [30:34]. Now I wonder what she should have done instead?
I think the well also leads to the other world. Not only does it share a resemblance, it is surrounded by a fairy ring, which is a warning about witches. If you step inside the ring, it is said that you will be trapped forever. Also, the hand tried to push Wybie in there, maybe it wasn't just to kill him, but so she wouldn't end up empty-handed. Wybie also said something about how if you fell in the well, you could "see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day". The other world never becomes day, even when Coraline goes home and we see that it's light outside..
@@nerf_or_nothin9551the well theory is good but it's also described like it's a void I think I'm not sure. If the theory was correct then the other mother's hand would've dragged Coraline to the well instead of the door in the house. Also as much as the theory sounds good and all, the creator of the book/Coraline confirms that Coraline did infact escape. The creator wanted to give a positive message to children. Her not escaping is just a negative message. The well theory might be right but at the end of the day she escapes. The beldam/other mother doesn't have much power either. Her main sources of power comes from the children's eyes
Coraline is based on a book by Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite authors. Almost all of the adaptations based on his works are absolute bangers and i highly recomend you watch (and react pretty please) to the stardust film, the sandman show and especially good omens (my obsession). All are absolutely wonderful, spooky, fantastical, and are filled with queer themes and relationships. Great fits for your channel 😊❤️
I agree with you that Neil Gaiman adaptations slap! Good omens, Lucifer, the sandman, coraline, and even supernatural is inspired by neil gaiman’s sandman>>>>
believe it or not, the book is actually way scarier, they toned it down a lot for the movie. In the book, the door is full size, the hallway was completely dark, and when she was escaping, she got the impression it was breathing. When she felt the sides, she described it as "hot and wet, like a mouth" almost like it was a throat. There werent dolls either filled with sand, everything was flesh and blood. Even the Other Mother bled "black, tarry stuff" when the cat scratched out her eyes and clawed her up. When the Other Father was basically discarded, he didnt become a pumpkin. He turned into like this amorphous blob of flesh like a blobfish with loose eyes, and strands connecting his mouth, with stick arms and legs. Something thats also kinda neat, the Other mother's hair floated and drifted around her head. The hand, was also a flesh hand. There was even a scene where Coraline woke up after escaping, to see "a pale white thing scuttle down the gutter, and there were deep gouges in her window" the hand was trying to get to her. The first draft of the film's script was actually so faithful to the book, that the author Neil Gaiman suggested they make changes because it wouldve been way too much for a family film lol
I honestly think the movie does a better job at giving the idea of false safety at first than the book does,so it makes more sense that coraline would want to stay. The book was horrors front start to finish lol. And she was basically alone
I've watched this movie since I was a kid, and yet it wasn until a couple of years ago that I realized that Mel, Coraline's mother, is wearing a neck cast because of an accident involving hitting the moving truck. That, combined with their heavily implied lack of money, may explain why they're so abrasive and so focused on completing the garden catalogue.
Yeah it’s so realistic with how parents can be a bit neglectful and dismissive when they are under financial stress. Like the mum is injured and they are just busy trying to stay afloat, so it makes sense that they are stressed out, sleep deprived and often in bad moods.
Yeah, shes dealing with pain, they moved into a lower costing housing to cope with financial stressors. Their garden catalogue would bring them a strong and immediate source of income that will tide them for a while, but they have a deadline they need it done by and they clearly had a lot of work that needed to be done. They weren't trying to be negligent but rather they are trying to take care of their parental duties by making sure they earn income to pay for their families needs. Especially when you're under alot of other stressors the parents are having a hard time being able to interact with Coraline properly. Another factor to consider is this movie is filmed from Coraline's perspective, so we tend to empathize with her more and look at her parents as bad parents because of that.
Mf the clip where hes like "GTFO" and then sees other mother's boots and immediately is like "hol up" got me lmao this my first vid from this dude but loved it
Did anything notice that she was not only a spider but like one of those spiders that mimic ants so that was why she was able to disguise Coraline's mother so easily.
there are so many theories for this movie, and one of my favourites is that the well was another gateway to the beldam’s world. • the well looks VERY similar to the door tunnel • fairy/witch ring around the well - fairy/witch rings are believed to indicate portals to other worlds • beldams are considered a type of witch - ergo, witch ring • the button over the moon / lid over the well parallel - symbolising coraline/the key being locked into the beldam’s world • whybie says that if you fell down the well, “you’d see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day” - the beldam’s world is only ever nighttime • the doll making scene shows the doll coming to the beldam from a starry sky (the well), she then sends it back into the sky (to the real world) • the ending with the cat disappearing seems to suggest the other world is still accessible • the ghost girl DID say “there’s only one, and the beldam WILL find it” after all… so in coraline trying to get rid of the key, she pretty much sent it back to the beldam, and we have no idea what would come of it because the story ends here 😭
Sorry, who gave you permission to literally blow my mind!? OH MY GOD!! All of that makes so much sense! The fact that Coraline may have sent the key back makes me feel so uneasy! I'd love to see a second film but also, I love that it's left the door open (pun intended) so we can discuss all the theories surrounding this gorgeous movie! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment that
@@niallnochill no problem ahaha, I know it’s crazy! this theory really makes the movie even more eerie, making you go from believing everything seems okay to wondering whether it was truly over at all
@@niallnochill some of the theories are actually supported by the book itself. Just before the climax in the book, after Coraline gets the last soul, and the world is tearing itself apart, she urges the cat to get out, that she'll see it again when she finishes the game, but the cat panics, saying "they're all gone. All of the entrances in and out just went flat." all of the portals collapsed because the world was unstable. The cat went into an entrance to the other world at the end of the movie, meaning it's stable again. _hmmm..._
My favorite interpretation is that the Other Mother is some kind of old-school faerie or fae creature. The fae are well-known for legends of stealing people (especially children), luring them with food or sweets, tricking them into agreeing to bargains, and sometimes stealing souls. And folklorically, stepping into a faerie ring of mushrooms (like the one around the well that Coraline steps into at the beginning of the movie) is one way you might accidentally be transported to their realm. This theory especially makes sense considering the original novel was written by an English man, Neil Gaiman, and implied to be set in the English countryside. In this interpretation, the Cat might be another fae creature in the shape of a cat, or it might just be that all cats are kind of magical. After all, they have a reputation for being able to get into places and seeing things that humans can't see; maybe any of them could talk if they went to the Other World.
I think i heard somewhere that the black cats being bad luck thing was to demonise this cultures beliefs that black cats are special (in a positive way) i think i heard that they were thought to house human souls or something like that. So that also backs that up if true
Funny story, one of my cats (a black cat) took about 3 years to realise she could hiss lol. The first time she did it, she was so surprised at the sound, looked completely shocked and confused lolll. She's been hissing ever since for absolutely no reason 😂
Neil Gaiman also wrote a short story (I can't find the title right now, unfortunately), where a cat, that is an angel protects a family from the devil. That would definetly fit your interpretation =)
@FabbSakura Hands down the most insane theatre experience I've ever had no bs (I was on acid and it was in 3D) but regardless it was a mindblowing film with or without!
Yeah, her parents aren't bad, just very stressed. A move, an accident/injury, a deadline, pressure the catalog won't work out, and allusions to the fact they don't really have money at the moment and this catalog is going to be their income. As someone who has a mother who worked two jobs and was highly stressed a lot, as a child it was frustrating when she acted like that, but as an adult, I recognized she did a lot of things to ensure I was fed, had everything I wanted, and made sure we had good memories and vacations despite putting a strain on our finances. My dad was similar to Coraline's too. A little more playful, nicer, but there were times when he's trying to work and I'd annoy him because I was bored.
One thing that Master Gaiman himself has verified is when he essentially alpha tested the story by giving it to a friend with a child because his manager told him it was too scary and it would never sell: The girl LIED about how creeped out she was, because her mother told her a friend wrote it "for her" as a bedtime story. The girl WAS too scared of the story, it WAS too scary for children, but it went to publication anyway because a little girl wanted to impress her mother... Basically, a real-life Coraline moment...
That's not even the full reason she lied though, she lied because even though she was scared she 'had to know how the story ended'. So basically his writing is so good it doesn't matter how scary it is, you just can't put it down!
It was my favorite movie as a child. My name is actually Caroline and my mom call me Coraline to this day even tho im almost 22 now haha. it's the opposite situation then the one in the movie. Love the fact that you reacting to it now!!
“So we’re in the states” fun fact, coraline is actually originally set in England! It’s said in the book that coralines dad has to go into London for work. Also the “taffy from Brighton” is actually from Bristol. As a Pom I was admittedly a little disappointed when they made her American but I love the movie non the less. I also love the addition of wybies character and the dolls which are a huge part of the movie but both don’t exist in the book. I think laika did a wonderful job at adapting it
First video I've seen by you. And wow, I thought I was a fan of this film, and you're out here catching details I've never noticed before like the mark on Coraline's neck after the climax.
fun fact: in the book, which takes place in britain rather than the US, only one of the ghosts has wings in the dream sequence, and the other three eat bowls of ice cream while she has honeysuckle. implying that the beldam doesn't just take human children, but children of the fae as well. and if you know anything about the fae, the fact that the beldam takes _their_ children and they can do nothing to stop her is _far_ more terrifying than anything else about her.
Fun fact, Keith David made the voice for the Cat, and he also stars in Hazbin Hotel as Husk and, most notoriously, Dr Facilier in The Princess and the Frog.
There is a video speaking about the wallpaper you see in the very first scene with the doll making, where the wallpaper is a mother bird killing and eating it's chick, shown by the slit in the baby bird's throat and the blood imagery. It was meant to symbolise the Other Mother and how she eats the children as far as I could remember.
You’re so right at that the other mother is absolutely SERVING for the entire movie, even when she is a spider demon at the end, she looks cool as fuck
If you like Laika stop motion films, you should also check out the film "Paranorman" from the same studio. It's also a breathtakingly beautiful film and Halloween themed
I saw this in theatres when i was like 10 years old and man did it give me nightmares BUT I WAS OBSESSSED WITH IT 😂😭. its really such a good movie, but so much darker than people expect
4:30 Fun fact: The movie is an adaptation of a book of the same name from the iconic British author Neil Gaiman, who originally set it in England (most likely nearby London). They changed the location to US Oregon for the film, which I honestly find quite fitting of the tone of the story and art direction. Still, I find that Neil Gaiman's particular British charm absolutely till comes through in the movie (and mind you, I'm Portuguese, so I'm not biased towards any of these countries).
Neil Gaiman’s stuff is all so good! If you haven’t seen them, you should check out Stardust, Sandman and Good Omens! Those are some of his other works that have been adapted :)
I noticed this time around that coraline's nose was always crooked and then I noticed that the beldams nose was weirdly upturned, turns out that was all intentional!
9:35 Random but technically no lol milkshakes have an ice-cream and milk base, along with whatever else you want to toss in. Smoothies are usually made with fruit, juice, or milk.
i love love love that you payed attention to all the details! it's what makes this film so rich and beautiful, everything looks so crisp, and the character and world design is sooo gorgeous and unique
There's a theory that the Beldam was some kind of witch, and that the cat was her familiar that she named Vermin because she hates cats. It's also the reason he's able to travel between the two dimensions.
Scary fact: in the book it details a soft wind drifting through the tunnel almost like breath, and after it turns brown and spooky, she could hear a heartbeat..hinting that the Beldam wasn't the worst monster there, but simply a parasite inside the arteries or throat of a bigger, more ancient monster that was asleep
Fun facts or theories abt coraline!! -in the ending scene, when the camera zooms out it’s the beldam’s face (other mother) as the garden! -the double loop when spelling ‘welcome home” may imply that coraline is welcome, but not home. -the key to the little door was not shown in the drawer until coraline’s real mother hovers her hand over the keys! Meaning that the other mother can make things happen even without being in coraline’s world. (Her taking coraline’s parents is also an implication of this) -in the book coraline, there’s an implication that the door itself is an entity and is alive, implied that it’s stronger than the other mother and is waking up, hungry. It’s ALSO implied that the other mother is scared of this entity or creature. -there is a theory that the well is another gateway to the other mother’s world, so when coraline threw the key into the well she might’ve just sent it right back to the beldam. -the cat disappearing behind the sign might just imply that the other world is not gone, therefore accessible. Some theorize that maybe that means that coraline never truly left the other world. -the other father’s song foreshadows what happens or might happen later on, basically a warning. “She’s a peach” meaning she’s food, “she’s a pal of mine” meaning he’s on her side, “she’s as cute as a button in the eyes of everyone our eyes will be on coraline” foreshadows when the other mother tries convincing coraline to put button eyes, “she’s a doll” could be talking about the doll the beldam made to spy on coraline, “we’ll never ever make it boring” could foreshadow the other mother only making in her world what she knows coraline would like. -the tools the beldam was using to make the coraline doll in the intro are used when preparing a corpse for the grave. -the other mother creates the meals for coraline as ‘family’ dinners, but she’s never shown to actually eat anything or even have anything on her plate. The only thing she ate was the chocolate insect. -the final version of the beldam looks like a spider, in the web scene it could be interpreted as a spider trying to get its prey (food. And what does the cat say to coraline? “She maybe just wants something to love other than herself, or maybe she just loves something to eat”, not his exact words but the ‘prey’ in this case is coraline. -the other mother implied the other father was a pumpkin or squash, she said ‘he’s as hungry as a pumpkin!” Before she went batshit (if the quote is wrong, sorry) -there’s a theory saying she never actually left, she’s only seen physically leaving by waking up in HER world. Bringing back the cat theory, he’s only seen appearing in the beldam’s world but suddenly he’s doing it in coraline’s world too before the end credits? -there’s a theory that coraline was in the other world for months, which is why the food went rotten. In the theory’s logic, hours in the beldam’s world is days or even MONTHS in coraline’s world. - there’s a theory that the coraline movie Indirectly talks about ‘don’t trust strangers’ and warns about grooming or stuff like that? It’s a good theory though and makes some sense if you think about it. The beldam being nice and sweet at first until she suddenly tries bribing coraline into button eyes- asking for something and in return getting the ‘love’, ‘attention’ and ‘affection’ the other mother supposedly gives to coraline. It also warns parents to pay attention to their kids. -there’s a theory that the grandma was desperate to get wybie AWAY from the pink palace due to her suspicions about the other mother and the disappearance of her sister, but she got scared because of the other mother getting hungry (?) so she agreed to let coraline and her parents live in the pink palace even though she normally never allows kids in the pink palace, so she was surprised when she saw coraline near the end of the movie. You can tell on her face. THOUGH THESE ATE JUST THEORIES, A MOVIE THEORY!! :D (matpad ref)
The cake the other mother gave coraline had “welcome home” with a double loop on the o of home but a singular loop on the o of welcome double loop means it’s a lie. which means coraline IS welcome, but she is NOT home! also there’s a theory that the cat is actually evil and in the end was trying to stop coraline from destroying the key, but when he saw that she wanted to throw it in the well, aka the theorized other portal to the other world, he felt at ease knowing that coraline just returned the key to the other mother. which is why at the end of the movie, he goes to the other world. also another theory, when coraline escapes the mirror and goes home, some people say the other mother was too calm and that’s cause she didn’t actually return home and it was just an illusion played by the other mother, which insinuates her magic seeping into the real world and her having some control there. also, idk if you noticed, the entire song the other father sang was foreshadowing/warnings “she’s a DOLL, our eyes will be on coraline” he was telling her what awaits her and that they’re watching her just some cool stuff i wanted to point out! hope you read this comment
Bit late to this but another thing is the making of the doll at the beginning is very similar to how people prepare a body for a funeral. Cutting clothes off the back, filling the mouth/any hole with cotton or sandpaper or anything so it doesnt leak fluids (gross), sewing the mouth shut for the same reason. Very interesting 🤷♀️
I likr the VERY subtle checov's gun with the beldam's love of a challenge Hell she even makes it mkre challenging to spice it up for herself like when she tells coraline "too easyyyyy" This freakin movir is STILL relevant Also KIETH DAVID CAT KIEHT DAVID CAT
Neil Gaiman, the author of Coraline, writes some really interesting stuff. I've read several of his short stories or novels that are like this. You take a little mythology, a little folklore, a little good old fashioned fantasy and then you have this Cthulhu vibe running just underneath the surface. So it's just like those nightmares I'm sure we've all had where everything seems familiar but it's just something off that makes it ten times more scary than the goriest slasher film you ever saw. His novel The Ocean At The End Of The Lane does something similar to Coraline.
In the book the cat can travel between the bedlam’s world and the real world without a door through “portals” so at the end the cat going through a portal signifies that the other dimension the other mother created is still there maybe a setup for a sequel? Very cool
The theory I’ve always had about this movie is that the Beldam got the key back, if you listen to Wybie talk about the well he says “If you fall the bottom and look up, you see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day” and it’s night the whole time in the other world even when she goes there during the day.
Dude, the first time I watched Coraline I was eight years old. It scared the crap out of me that night after I watch the movie I was afraid to go to sleep because I was afraid I’d see the other mother in my dreams, particularly the part where she says, DON’T LEAVE ME, DON’T LEAVE ME! I’LL DIE WITHOUT YOU! That scared me so bad I don’t have the proper words to describe it like damn that actress deserves whatever the heck she wants because that performance was amazing! It almost makes me feel kind of bad for the other mother because I can hear the sorrow, fear and anger in her voice.
Long ago I lived near Liaka Studios in Beaverton, Oregon. The studio was founded by the son of the founder of NIKE. The studio had a huge exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art. The monster in 'Kubo and the Two Strings was 37 feet tall. Coraline's garden set was huge, maybe 50-60 feet across. The dolls were 6 to 8 inches tall. Coraline's sweater was hand knitted out of sewing thread!!
I like the fun fact that during meals other mother never had food on her plate but other father is just loading it up with all the food lol. Bro is a pumpkin and other mother gotta save room for consuming the children lol
I first watched Coraline at 9 years old alone in an old rental house with squeaky floor and high ceilings... I was traumatized. Years later I watched it again and I love this movie its amazing 😍
There's a theory (mostly based on information from the original book) that the other world is a living entity, and it was feeding on the other mother, so she had to feed on children to keep herself alive. Essentially like how you can charge your phone with a portable charger, but the portable charger also needs to be charged. The suspense in the end (and why the cat is still able to use the portals) is because 1: the other mother isn't actually dead, or 2: the other world has already killed her, and is waiting for the next beldam who will feed it, presumably Coraline herself
Fun fact: When Neil Gaiman first started writing the book he got a criticism from someone saying the book was too scary to publish and market to kids, so they had that someone's daughter read it! She was pretty young, like 10 i think, and said it wasn't all that scary. Later, when the book was finished and published, the girl told Neil Gaiman that the book actually scared the daylights out of her, but she lied so that she could read the ending because it was so good!!! 😂😂😂
another secret meaning that not a lot of people catch on to is in the scene when the dad 'makes up a song about Coraline' and he drops some subtle hints like 'shes as cute as a BUTTON IN THE EYES of anyone who laid their eyes on coraline' and 'mother and i will NEVER EVER MAKE IT BORING' and lastly 'OUR EYES ARE ON CORALINE'
Would absolutely love your take on the other Laika films. Paranorman and Kubo and the Two Strings are both beautiful and have both made me cry. Makes me wish there were more stop motion studios.
Id LOVE to see u watch good omens!! I just watched s2 and balled my eyes out lmao Edit: also Crowley (from good omens) has such a gay walk lol (if u know u know)
There was a theory that Coraline had given the Beldan back the key by throwing it in the well (because the well had a lot of resemblance to the portal in the door) and another saying she had never really left, because she was never seen actually physically leaving the other world until the end (she would just go to sleep and wake up in her 'normal world') and with the cat basically teleporting because he was only seen doing that in the Beldan's world
Wanna see something cool? 8:00 & 31:28 27:49 & 31:35 Yes this is theorized to be another portal, evidence would be in at the beginning wybue says "that if one was to fall in the well and look up, they would see a sky full of stars, even in the day-time." What time of day is the other world always set? Night.
I love how almost all the reactions I’ve seen to this movie people assume the grandma is the villain at first 😭 im just behind the screen like bro leave granny alone she’s been through enoughhh Lol but you should do more animated movie reactions!
This was actually my first time hearing someone thinking of granny as the villain or a suspicious character. Like, how do you even make that conclusion? She would be suspicious if she ONLY rented to families with kids, which his grandson said SHE DOESN'T.
Im just seeing this now, and I love your channel and Coraline, wanted to mention a fun tidbit about stop motion animation: Because of how stop motion is made, NOTHING is placed in the movie or happens by accident- every detail is intentional. So the small details that can fortell something later in a movie are all intentional, even though you might glaze over them multiple watches
This film was both made and is set in my home state of Oregon, and I really love how well they captured that in the film. Oregon's kinda famous for like...being wet, dark, and muddy, and the people here are REALLY weird, but mostly very friendly. Thankfully haven't met any beldams, though.
FUNFACT: if you read the book, many fans think that maybe the real monster are the fantasy corridor between the worlds. because in the book the tunnel was scary, almost like going through a mouth and a presence that you felt throughout the trip because it took longer to go between the passages. as if something somebody was watching you even though you could not see it
I used to watch Coraline so much as a kid to the point that my parents named my sister after the movie- we showed the movie to my sister and she loved it too lol
It was inferred,in the book, that the tunnel was living or at least sentient. And she described the tunnel as feeling like flesh or something like that. You said the tunnel was squishy and that jumped to mind. Which...interesting childrens book😂btw
Fun fact easter egg: when the other mother was cooking omens near the end one of the egg yolks had the head of jack skeleton in it because the director of Coraline is the same director that made nightmare before night.
Hey Nial you made the connection with the bugs, but did you also notice that Coraline’s hairpin is also a bug? Only differences it’s not a beetle too. And you know something dragonflies eat beetles. So maybe the fact that everything around her is a beetle but the one bug on her is a dragonfly has some sort of metaphorical message of some kind. Or I’m just overthinking.
Idk how many people know this but the cursive on the cake saying "welcome home" is Particularly intresting. The double loop on the O in home is because in old cursive when you have a double loop in a letter thats only ment to have one the word is proclaiming a lie. On the other hand the one loop is a truth. Thus forth Coraline is "welcome" but she is not "home"
So even a month late, I have some notes. 1) I'm 31. Last year, I accidentally fell asleep to the audiobook and it gave me some of the worst nightmares I've ever had. I've loved the book since I accidentally discovered it in my elementary school library and I fell in love with the movie the first time I saw it. The book still scares the shit out of me 😅 it is so much scarier than the movie 2) there's a theory that the fog itself is a different entity. I thought it was interesting. This is a really big one for the book because the fog is specifically mentioned A LOT, even when it seems unnecessary 3) there's a theory that as soon as Coraline stepped over the well and into the fairy ring of mushrooms, she disappeared from her world and the entire thing is done by the fairies. This only applies to the movie though 4) if you notice, the Other Father is almost constantly eating. It's because he doesn't know the next time he's going to be able to eat because the Beldam steals children sporadically and lays everything dormant until a child has been found. He's also made of a squash. 5) there's a really fucked up theory that the first time she goes through the tunnel (like the fairy ring theory) Coraline never actually made it back. She's trapped in a separate universe. Because after all is said and done the ending is kind of wrapped with a bow: Coraline goes home, the ghost kids are freed, and the residents are planting flowers in the barren garden. It's a plot to keep her happy so the Beldam can feed off of her life.
Hey guys, I wanna tell you something cool I learned about Coraline. In the scene where they pull out the cake and it spells out, Welcome home. The O in welcome has one loop but the O in home has two loops in it. When there is an O with two loops in that writing style, it means it’s a lie so Coraline is welcome, but she’s not home. Here’s another cool thing I learned. That song that the father sings is foreshadowing. You can try and decipher it on your own or if not, just continue reading. The song goes Making up a song about Coraline, she’s a ( peach ) she’s a doll. She’s a pal of mine. She’s as cute as a ( button in the eyes ) of everyone who ever laid their eyes on Coraline! If you already haven’t made the connection, she’s a peach refers to her being a snack for the belldamn. And button in the eye is self explanatory. I used to love that song when I was a kid and now I love it even more because of how cool it is because of the foreshadowing and that it’s a cheerful song but it’s actually an omen.
A little fun fact about the welcome home cake is that the o in home is written in a way that implies she's lying but not the one in welcome meaning she is welcome but not home I think that it's such a cool detail.
I am so glad you reviewed this because I watched every review on the Internet of this movie and they’re all entertaining but none of them have been this fucking funny! 😂 your gay little twist on everything is exactly how I react to movies too, Feels like I’m watching with a friend.
Coraline's real parents aren't neglective. They're stressed and poor and if you actually notice, they actually had a recent car accident which means hospital bills which means they most likely moved because they couldn't afford their previous home anymore. They can barely afford food. 😢

His grandma's twin sister went missing. The doll used to look like her. The other mother changed it and used her magic to send it back into the normal world. She makes a doll for every new victim.
Something from the book that they cut out of the film:
There's an even more horrifying eldritch entity.
She became certain that there was something in the dark behind her, something very old and very slow."
"The candle cast huge, strange, flickering shadows along the wall. She heard something moving in the darkness - behind her or to one side of her, she could not tell. It seemed as if it was keeping pace with her, whatever it was."
... This time what she touched felt hot and wet, as if she had put her hand in somebody's mouth, and she pulled it back with a small wail."
So yeah, the book is really, really good. I strongly recommend reading it, or better yet listening to the audiobook which was narrated by the author, Neil Gaiman himself.
@@Ansixilus OMGGG thanks to this paragraph alone, I'm now getting the book lmao

There’s a theory that Vermin or The Cat was once another child that lived at the Pink Palace but either was too suspicious of the Beldam or moved away before she could get him or had a living family or all three but since he interacted with the witch, he was a “ loose thread”. He died having lived a full life but his soul returned as a cat. He failed to save Wybie’s grandma’s sister and that’s why he stays close to Wybie. Both because he feels bad for his previous failure but also because he wanted to be there for Wybie in case the worst happened.
That’s such an interesting theory! But also, I don’t think his name is actually vermin, that’s just what the beldam called him ‘cause she hated him
I heard about that theory
My favorite little detail is the fact that the wallpaper in the intro is a sparrow and a cuckcoo, which is a bird that does brood parasitism, and the fact that the whole doll making intro is done pretty much with the same tools that are used when prepping a corpse for the grave,

As far as the grandma goes. Your point about the grandma is actually a theory for many fans. They think that she noticed that the beldam was trying to entice wybie and so she allowed them to move in so that it would take coraline instead. Especially since she lost her sister to the beldam
OOOOOOOH, that makes sense, I knew I couldn't trust her lol

But as we see things get better in the end, they start getting better income from their catalogue, thus they don't have to worry about money as much anymore and can start focusing on their child.
another detail is when the other mother creates all those meals for coraline as family dinners, she never eats anything, her plate is always empty, the only time she does eat is the 'chocolate' insect in the drawing room
also i dont know if anyone's mentioned yet but the garden in the real world at the end looks like the beldam's face!!
OH MY GOD How did i not notice!?? thanks for pointing it out
I had somehow never noticed the cat stopping Coraline when she goes out to throw the key down the well [30:34]. Now I wonder what she should have done instead?
ALWAYS TRUST A CAT!!!!!
Im pretty sure the cat was thinking the Beldam might have been there (and she did end up being there shortly)
@niallnochill Omg I would kill for a GO reaction
believe it or not, the book is actually way scarier, they toned it down a lot for the movie.
In the book, the door is full size, the hallway was completely dark, and when she was escaping, she got the impression it was breathing. When she felt the sides, she described it as "hot and wet, like a mouth"
almost like it was a throat.
There was even a scene where Coraline woke up after escaping, to see "a pale white thing scuttle down the gutter, and there were deep gouges in her window"
the hand was trying to get to her.
The first draft of the film's script was actually so faithful to the book, that the author Neil Gaiman suggested they make changes because it wouldve been way too much for a family film lol
That's so interesting that the author wanted the changes, makes me like it even more knowing he wanted it
I honestly think the movie does a better job at giving the idea of false safety at first than the book does,so it makes more sense that coraline would want to stay.
There's a bug theory for Coraline here on UA-cam, it's amazing you've noticed. They said everything in the movie was intentional.
Mf the clip where hes like "GTFO" and then sees other mother's boots and immediately is like "hol up" got me lmao this my first vid from this dude but loved it
LMAOOO I got to give credit where it's due, the boots were great
Did anything notice that she was not only a spider but like one of those spiders that mimic ants so that was why she was able to disguise Coraline's mother so easily.
there are so many theories for this movie, and one of my favourites is that the well was another gateway to the beldam’s world.
• the well looks VERY similar to the door tunnel
• fairy/witch ring around the well - fairy/witch rings are believed to indicate portals to other worlds
• beldams are considered a type of witch - ergo, witch ring
• the button over the moon / lid over the well parallel - symbolising coraline/the key being locked into the beldam’s world
• whybie says that if you fell down the well, “you’d see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day” - the beldam’s world is only ever nighttime
• the doll making scene shows the doll coming to the beldam from a starry sky (the well), she then sends it back into the sky (to the real world)
• the ending with the cat disappearing seems to suggest the other world is still accessible
• the ghost girl DID say “there’s only one, and the beldam WILL find it” after all…
so in coraline trying to get rid of the key, she pretty much sent it back to the beldam, and we have no idea what would come of it because the story ends here 😭
Sorry, who gave you permission to literally blow my mind!?
All of the entrances in and out just went flat."
all of the portals collapsed because the world was unstable.
The cat went into an entrance to the other world at the end of the movie, meaning it's stable again. _hmmm..._
I'm always gonna be unsettled because of that damn key! Why can't there be a second movie or book? 😭
@@typo1345the cat being able to cross to the other world at the end also shows that the other world is still there, even though it got “destroyed.”

One thing that Master Gaiman himself has verified is when he essentially alpha tested the story by giving it to a friend with a child because his manager told him it was too scary and it would never sell:
The girl LIED about how creeped out she was, because her mother told her a friend wrote it "for her" as a bedtime story.
Aw that’s so cute! I hope you enjoyed my reaction 💖
Those aren’t sowing needles in the beginning of the doll making lol the tools are actually what morticians use to prepare ded bodies 😳
fun fact: in the book, which takes place in britain rather than the US, only one of the ghosts has wings in the dream sequence, and the other three eat bowls of ice cream while she has honeysuckle. implying that the beldam doesn't just take human children, but children of the fae as well. and if you know anything about the fae, the fact that the beldam takes _their_ children and they can do nothing to stop her is _far_ more terrifying than anything else about her.
Fun fact, Keith David made the voice for the Cat, and he also stars in Hazbin Hotel as Husk and, most notoriously, Dr Facilier in The Princess and the Frog.
OMG! As a Disney girl I knew that voice I just couldn’t t place it. Thanks!
🥰
Dr. Facilier is an awesome character.
I thought it would be creepy but damn, the sewing of Ybee's mouth into a smile had me shook!
Oh my god I LOOOOVE STARDUST!!! Such a comfort movie 🥹✨
Good omens is so good I just watched s2 and cried lol
@@Finn_the_Robin omg saaaaaame. I’m actually getting a good omens tattoo today
Sandman is great
I noticed this time around that coraline's nose was always crooked and then I noticed that the beldams nose was weirdly upturned, turns out that was all intentional!
Coraline is easing into the month? lol
Well… that’s what I initially thought 😭🫠
9:35 Random but technically no lol milkshakes have an ice-cream and milk base, along with whatever else you want to toss in. Smoothies are usually made with fruit, juice, or milk.
i love love love that you payed attention to all the details! it's what makes this film so rich and beautiful, everything looks so crisp, and the character and world design is sooo gorgeous and unique
There's a theory that the Beldam was some kind of witch, and that the cat was her familiar that she named Vermin because she hates cats. It's also the reason he's able to travel between the two dimensions.
The back of the other mothers dress remains me of the pattern on a black widow spider especially when you consider the webs she made
The cat has the same voice actor as the witch doctor from The Princess and the Frog. It's a Disney movie.
This is my comfort movie. In gloomy days I light a candle, bake shit, throw it on repeat. It’s just perfect in every way.
(Her taking coraline’s parents is also an implication of this)
-in the book coraline, there’s an implication that the door itself is an entity and is alive, implied that it’s stronger than the other mother and is waking up, hungry.
-the other mother implied the other father was a pumpkin or squash, she said ‘he’s as hungry as a pumpkin!” Before she went batshit (if the quote is wrong, sorry)
-there’s a theory saying she never actually left, she’s only seen physically leaving by waking up in HER world.
The cake the other mother gave coraline had “welcome home” with a double loop on the o of home but a singular loop on the o of welcome
double loop means it’s a lie. which means coraline IS welcome, but she is NOT home!
also there’s a theory that the cat is actually evil and in the end was trying to stop coraline from destroying the key, but when he saw that she wanted to throw it in the well, aka the theorized other portal to the other world, he felt at ease knowing that coraline just returned the key to the other mother. which is why at the end of the movie, he goes to the other world.
also another theory, when coraline escapes the mirror and goes home, some people say the other mother was too calm and that’s cause she didn’t actually return home and it was just an illusion played by the other mother, which insinuates her magic seeping into the real world and her having some control there.
also, idk if you noticed, the entire song the other father sang was foreshadowing/warnings “she’s a DOLL, our eyes will be on coraline” he was telling her what awaits her and that they’re watching her
just some cool stuff i wanted to point out! hope you read this comment
I likr the VERY subtle checov's gun with the beldam's love of a challenge
Hell she even makes it mkre challenging to spice it up for herself like when she tells coraline "too easyyyyy"
This freakin movir is STILL relevant
Also KIETH DAVID CAT KIEHT DAVID CAT
Very cool
Coraline traumatized me when I was young and it still does now, I love it and I hate it.
Woooooooooooooo Coraline has been my favorite movie since I was 5
I like the fun fact that during meals other mother never had food on her plate but other father is just loading it up with all the food lol.
I just watched s2 and balled my eyes out lmao
Edit: also Crowley (from good omens) has such a gay walk lol (if u know u know)
I don’t really know why, but I love the way the Cat says “she wants something to love…I think”
There’s also a theory people think that coraline never escaped the other world
There was a theory that Coraline had given the Beldan back the key by throwing it in the well (because the well had a lot of resemblance to the portal in the door) and another saying she had never really left, because she was never seen actually physically leaving the other world until the end (she would just go to sleep and wake up in her 'normal world') and with the cat basically teleporting because he was only seen doing that in the Beldan's world
he really said "HANDS OF MY WOMAN"
4:16 I love that you're making references to the book, even though not having mentioned reading it ❤
Wanna see something cool?
8:00 & 31:28
27:49 & 31:35
Yes this is theorized to be another portal, evidence would be in at the beginning wybue says "that if one was to fall in the well and look up, they would see a sky full of stars, even in the day-time."
What time of day is the other world always set? Night.
I love how almost all the reactions I’ve seen to this movie people assume the grandma is the villain at first 😭 im just behind the screen like bro leave granny alone she’s been through enoughhh
Lol but you should do more animated movie reactions!
I don’t know if you noticed, but at the other mother‘s house, there was three photos of all the three ghost children on the wall 😢 luv this movie ❤
I watched this movie countless times and not once did I notice the red around her neck at the end! Good catch
Well I guess this will be my motivation to finally watch Coraline
Me and you💪🏼 back at it again!!
@@niallnochill 🎶reunited and it feels so good🎶
So even a month late, I have some notes.
1) I'm 31. Last year, I accidentally fell asleep to the audiobook and it gave me some of the worst nightmares I've ever had. I've loved the book since I accidentally discovered it in my elementary school library and I fell in love with the movie the first time I saw it. The book still scares the shit out of me 😅 it is so much scarier than the movie
2) there's a theory that the fog itself is a different entity. I thought it was interesting. This is a really big one for the book because the fog is specifically mentioned A LOT, even when it seems unnecessary
3) there's a theory that as soon as Coraline stepped over the well and into the fairy ring of mushrooms, she disappeared from her world and the entire thing is done by the fairies. This only applies to the movie though
4) if you notice, the Other Father is almost constantly eating.
The song goes
Making up a song about Coraline, she’s a ( peach ) she’s a doll.
This is already probably been said by 1000 people, but the other father song was foreshadowing if you look at the lyrics
@nailnochill Coraline produced by #Laika studios is best known for its stop-motion feature films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link. The founders of NIKE started this production company
i discovered this movie as a teenager (17yo, i think?) and LOVED it, but i am 100% sure the movie would have bloody frightened me as a kid. such a great thing, beautiful and camp, my first entry into Neil Gaiman's universe. i'm glad you enjoyed it, and you noticed so much things i didn't until today!
If you like stop motion, I’d highly recommend Corpse Bride if you haven’t already seen it! Gorgeous work on that one
