Since my budget for film is small (especially as a college student), this is definitely something that I could see myself springing for as long as there’s not any better options under $300. Thank you for this video, it makes me want to go out and start making videos of my own!
If you shoot raw video on the EOS-M, I recommend purchasing a Sandisk 95 MB/SEC SD Card. There’s also a build on the experiments page on Magic Lantern’s site for 4K like the the Canon 5D Mark III. Make sure to research the forum before trying that build, and always remember to take the battery out if the camera hangs up! Always works. I shoot Magic Lantern on the Canon 7D and Canon T3i and have never had my camera bricked. Knock on wood, but honestly just take out the battery if something goes wrong, turn off the camera, and never take the memory card out while the camera is on!
Hello. When you use magic lantern in t3i, how much time can you record 4K? Does it depend on the sad card speed? Because I heard even if it’s a fast sad card the camera has its limitations. I’m thinking about buying one, but I’m not sure because of that…. Thank you.
@@geb191 Hello Emile the T3i has a bottleneck of 21 mb /sec and the SD Overclock hack doesn't work for this camera to my knowledge. I've read online there is a new Crop Mood build which lets you view framing in color when shooting in crop mode. I believe the T4i and T5i work for this. Honestly though, I've read the T series cameras after the T3i have focus pixels issues in raw and compressed H.264 recording video. I love the 7D, but honestly if you can I would go with the 5D Mark III. There's development for the 5D Mark II, but I would save more and go with the Mark III. Glad to see this camera get some love. I don't shoot Canon any more, but when I did, I used an EOS-M as my b-cam. Image quality is very solid and I think the portability makes it a ton of fun to use; I'd often grab it when I went on a hike or bike ride, just to have a good camera with me. Thanks for shooting that. This is actually my primary camera and all my videos on my channel are shot with this camera. All the advice you gave is great. My advice go get an FD adapter and then you have a broad range of lenses you can use on the cheap.
Maybe one point to notice is that the Magic Lantern Firmware only works on the classic M, not on the later models such as M3, M5 or M6... sadly. Great tips though.
I came here hoping to find that ML would work on the M6, but it seems that may not happen at all. I'm almost tempted to get an M just so I can install Magic Lantern on it.
just bought one for around 110 euro and i cant wait to see the 14bit raw 2.5k upscaled, this seems better than alot of 4k camera out there, good for broll on the go and i will make a vlog with it, so sty tuned. great video, thank you for the the tip.
That camera is so underrated. It got a bad rep as it focussed slowly when it was released. They fixed it with an update but by then it was too late. It’s a great budget video camera. You get the excellent Cannon colours for a super low price.
I've been using a EOS-M for a year or two now, using everything from the kit lens to L series to Rokinon, Tokina, etc. I love it's size and actually prefer it to the 70D. which seems like a beast to carry around in comparison.
The brand is R.J. Camera on eBay. I think it sells for around hundred dollars. Be aware of one big concern with it: While the RJ Camera Turbo focal reducer is good quality and gives you the full frame look -- the adapter I got years ago had flare issues (purple spot in the center) with certain lens combinations and how you are shooting or if you need a hood etc. Hopefully the RJ Turbo guys have improved their product, but make sure there is a good return policy if you are not happy.
The speedbooster would actually make your lens faster, so say the 24-70 f/4 would become an f/2.8 (I think). This would give you an extra stop of light and a shallower depth of field. It would also make your field of view wider, making it easier to use longer lenses for portrait style shots to get that nice facial compression. It's close to having a full frame camera.
Hey man this was the video that initially got me interested in the EOS M, and I want to say thank you, as I am new to photography and filmmaking and don't have a big budget, but this camera ticked all of the boxed. I payed around £200 for mine and a 15-45 EF-M lens and the quality is brilliant! It's a nice, lightweight camera that I can carry around with me in a small camera bag, which makes life much easier. So thank you for informing me about this camera, this video has been a real life saver!
I can't thank you enough for this video. I watched it like three times now and I recently purchased the 35mm lens you recommended. I have an Olympus PL1 and the included adapter made for a perfect fit. I shoot a vlog for my wife and just shot the first new episode using the new setup and it looks 1000 times more professional just using the suggested lens. Videos like this keep me learning and loving the fact that people like me can make terrific videos and film.
more like 540p on a fast sd card. and its not downscaled, its cropped. so i wouldnt call it sharp. raw video is a waste of effort for the eos m. its better to just shoot normal video, because it uses the whole sensor, combine that with cinestyle picture profile then you have something to work with. but yeah still pretty capable camera if you want to put in the effort.
Thanks heaps for this video and for everything you do for the online video community, Caleb. I've considered getting an EOS M for ages and finally picked one up after watching this video.
No joke this is an AMAZING little camera. It’s amazing at how cheap they are now. Mirrorless, aps-c, interchangeable lens, >$200. I’ll be getting it for b-roll footage!
Do you have it yet? It's super cheap to buy. I own three of them, and shoot cinematic videos with them like this: ua-cam.com/video/oMsW85LvQMg/v-deo.html
Haha, yes man ! This really looks like my *cheap cinematic setup* i'm currently using ! Maybe you can see some of my work about a *roadtrip in Norway* i've just did with my brother !
Rise, quick questions: does thispparticular model have a battery grip and does it output video over hdmi? Doesn't have to be clean or anything, just something I can attach a monitor to. Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hi, I have a EOS M, there is no battery grip made for it, and the HDMI out is not "clean" (shows the same picture as the internal display) but it is good enough for a field monitor
i have this as a great set up for a 3rd camera for my 70Ds. You can get a meike 35mm lens as well as a rokinon fish eye that looks really great as well. If you have the EF adapter you get the nifty 50 on here. People are all about the 4k and we all need to get there but, for quick concept shoots to upload its a great kit. One additional note: I picked up a hard case at harbor freight (apache 4800) for a good price that let me make a real travel case with glass, camera, light rig, batteries, cards.
This camera is basically a t3i in a mirrorless body. I bought it with the adapter to attach EF lenses. I used it has a second camera for interviews and a back up camera in case something happens to my t3i. It’s not the best for photography because autofocus is not the greatest.
I do find it slow for photography but I do like it for photos. The screen feels pretty small when I'm trying to shoot video on it and not ever 100 % if I nailed focus. So I mostly use the eos m for photos. I never use auto focus really anyway though. You are right though, it is a t3i basically. Good little camera.
Great tips to maximising the EOS M. I picked one up with a 22mm EF-M f/2.0 lens a year ago at 150USD. Been using it for my channel doing smartphone reviews. Still learning along the way but it's a great beginners' video camera. My only gripe is the continuous autofocus which is pretty slow, and refocuses quite a bit.
Really great video !! Shows what you can do with next to nothing. You could also throw a hand held stabiliser to help with the jitter, but the footage you got is really cool there. Almost has a slight retro cinema feel. Thumbs up from me
it goes up to 29mins internally, with standard codec, and magic lantern allows to override this by making it continuous (albeit losing a few frames... better have a second unit if you need a continuous shot e.g. for events, especially for covering the loss of the audio frames)
If you want continuous recording you need the best SD card you can afford. On many DSLRs, just switching from class 10 to class 12 or UHS remove the "30 minutes wall" easily.
@@florianbitterlin3989 Unfortunately not, I haven't really delved into it though... just postponed the purchase of a filter for the time being. EDIT: I've just realized there's a nice close up of the very thing at 2:48. Just look up K&F Concept Step Up on Amazon and you should find it; also make sure it goes from 37mm to 52mm as he says at 2:56. Looks like the answer was right under our noses the whole time lol.
Is it only me who thinks that lens is total crap?! Look at the edges.... Looks like you can do only "center" composition, otherwise your subject will just blur out :D
Martin Chapčák while I think it's a neat effect, you definitley have a point. For this setup I would recommend getting an adapter for the old FD mount and using vintage canon lenses. My local camera store sells used film glass for $30 apiece without regard to the lens or it's condition (unless its something like the 55 1.2).
It's not a good all-rounder or kit lens for sure, but the blur edges give whatever is in the center more separation in a very organic way that you can't fake in post. I have a couple of old cheap lenses that I basically use for one-point-perspective or center shorts here and there, and that has made my work stand out. Yes, these lenses only have one purpose and one kind of shot, but they do that really, really well (and they are less than 50 bucks).
Arcanineisthebest that's a great point, when you pay $30 for a lens it doesn't have to be the one you use every day as long as it looks nice for some situations.
*Thanks Caleb, this is one of my most favorite UA-cam videos that I've watched many times! I just received an EOS M2 for $144, no tax and no shipping fees, and I have an EOS M arriving in a week or so, which I got for $123 ($140.00 with tax and shipping) in an Ebay auction! I deeply appreciate you, and best wishes to you and your family. Happy New Year!*
I love this camera. I don't know all the tips and tricks for the camera. But it works great for what I use it for. You did a great review. The size and cost for this camera compared to some of the other cameras my friends use, make it that much more worth it. Portability equals convenience. You will use it more, because it is easier to carry and bring it with you.
OMG I love those videos of your son, the colours, the DoF, running though the leaves. I have an EOS-M I was about to put on eBay (i bough the M5 recently) and you know, magic latern and getting that F1.6 seems pretty attractive now :)
Have this little beast since 1.5 years now and just made a big rig out of it. Love the ability to shoot raw CONTINUOUSLY (at least for some minutes) in the highest possible resolution thanks to the new ml raw compression (29MB/s @ 10bit 1728x584 in 24p and no crop -> you have to stratch it in post a little bit so the aspect racio is correct). But colors are awesome and in raw youll get around 11 stops of dr :D
Literally have been using this exact setup for a few months now, such a good deal for the money. Really enjoy your videos, especially the budget friendly kit
I too really liked the video quality of the EOS-M, and if you want to totally rely on manual focus, then it’s a good kit. The Achilles heel of this camera is the autofocus which is just diabolically bad. I thought it wouldn’t be an issue but if you use it for stills or video with autofocus, you will find yourself looking to Sony or Fuji for solace.
The Canon EOS M is a great little camera! I used two of them for multicam shoots before jumping to the Panasonic G7. That reminds me: I should really list those EOS Ms on eBay.
Thanks Caleb. Just came to your channel. Loved how you described the camera i had to get one. Just got it yesterday. Im aspiring to begin my filmmaker journey and will be watching your channel for your great advice
I just got this camera-lens combo mostly because of your video (and a lot of research). One thing, i don't seem to have very close focus. I haven't measured it, but its around 2 feet and I'm thinking it should be half that. Infinity is also WAY before the mark on the lens, which leads me to believe the adapter is too short.
Hi, does magic lantern firmware works on canon M10?
Wee Tai Tan nope
I think you just need the old firmware 2.2 not the newest update for ML to work
What about m2?
Love the new top down shoots with white background. Thanks for the setup. All ways a baller.
Subscribed! This is the sort of content I want. What's the late 2019 equivalent to this?
I am really enjoying your "video on a budget" related stuff.
Nooooo you're gonna drive up the prices :(
Zachary Whitney too late.
Zachary Whitney Haha, too late. Now the cheapest I can find one is like $250/$275
Nah they're even cheaper. Body only for less than 150 now.
pahwraith can you send me a link? The link he provides is for like $500/400
Guys the m2 is newer and cheaper
just bought one for around 110 euro and i cant wait to see the 14bit raw 2.5k upscaled, this seems better than alot of 4k camera out there, good for broll on the go and i will make a vlog with it, so sty tuned.
great video, thank you for the the tip.
That camera is so underrated. It got a bad rep as it focussed slowly when it was released. They fixed it with an update but by then it was too late. It’s a great budget video camera. You get the excellent Cannon colours for a super low price.
I did not think it could be that great, but that's amazing!!! Great job man!!!
4:00 Also sports a microphone jack.
I've been using a EOS-M for a year or two now, using everything from the kit lens to L series to Rokinon, Tokina, etc. I love it's size and actually prefer it to the 70D. which seems like a beast to carry around in comparison.
There is one company that makes a focal reducer speedbooster for the EOS-M ..you can get the full frame look with Nikon F mount lenses on the EOS M.
given the price of speed boosters and the size of full frame lenses it would probably make more sense to be a 2nd hand 5d mkii off ebay for $850
John Chu yo what is this company I have an m5 that i would love using it on
The brand is R.J.
+John Chu ...why not just buy aps-c lenses though?......like the 17-55mm f2.8 from canon (or sigma 17-50mm f2.8 for something cheaper)
I was really impressed with the lens. I love how dream like the rendering is
Hey man this was the video that initially got me interested in the EOS M, and I want to say thank you, as I am new to photography and filmmaking and don't have a big budget, but this camera ticked all of the boxed. I payed around £200 for mine and a 15-45 EF-M lens and the quality is brilliant! It's a nice, lightweight camera that I can carry around with me in a small camera bag, which makes life much easier. So thank you for informing me about this camera, this video has been a real life saver!
With or without Magic Lantern? (For video).
@@noodlessoul8356 I have installed ML on it but I haven't used it properly yet as I don't really record videos much.
Can you pls Make a Video about the Canon T3i/600d and some Cinema stuff for it? ☺️
200 bucks and raw 1080p thats sharper than low bitrate 1080 or 4k on some older cams for 200 bucks? Wow.
try 110$ CDN used! Just nabbed one yesterday!
more like 540p on a fast sd card. and its not downscaled, its cropped. so i wouldnt call it sharp. raw video is a waste of effort for the eos m. its better to just shoot normal video, because it uses the whole sensor, combine that with cinestyle picture profile then you have something to work with. but yeah still pretty capable camera if you want to put in the effort.
what is CDN?
IUSECAMERAS he meant CAD which is short for Canadian Dollar
Sugarless did you buy it on Ebay? From Canada? The cheapest I see is 193$ plus import fees!
Thanks heaps for this video and for everything you do for the online video community, Caleb. I've considered getting an EOS M for ages and finally picked one up after watching this video.
Awesome! Just went and purchased these goodies! No cage or tripod, but got camera, lens, adapter, filter for a grand total of... $222!
Great! Could you give some feedback once you got it? The cheapest I have seen is about 200$ CAD on Ebay (around 157$ US)
Yes pls tell i really want to know really intrested in buying
No joke this is an AMAZING little camera. It’s amazing at how cheap they are now. Mirrorless, aps-c, interchangeable lens, >$200. I’ll be getting it for b-roll footage!
Sick!
Once I saw this I had to get the EOS M
I was already interested but this really enticed me and I went for it , I have no regrets
YOOOO my first camera is going to be this :) thx homie :O
Do you have it yet? It's super cheap to buy. I own three of them, and shoot cinematic videos with them like this: ua-cam.com/video/oMsW85LvQMg/v-deo.html
I just bought this set up!!! The power of a good vlogger!
Haha, yes man ! This really looks like my *cheap cinematic setup* i'm currently using !
Maybe you can see some of my work about a *roadtrip in Norway* i've just did with my brother !
Norway looks so amazing! My wife lived there for a few years and said it felt like she was constantly in a fantasy movie or something.
Yes it is !
Do you know if there is a gimbal are a stabilizer i can use for this camera?
Rise, quick questions: does thispparticular model have a battery grip and does it output video over hdmi? Doesn't have to be clean or anything, just something I can attach a monitor to.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Hi, I have a EOS M, there is no battery grip made for it, and the HDMI out is not "clean" (shows the same picture as the internal display) but it is good enough for a field monitor
I have an EOS M in my briefcase everywhere I go. Very handy for a quick still or short video. Add a small lav mic and you have a great vlogging cam.
What settings do you guys use in Magic Lantern to get the best out of your EOS M? Still new to this.
i have this as a great set up for a 3rd camera for my 70Ds.
It's actually better than the t3i video wise.. it's a smaller t4i..
I just bought this camera, from this recommendation... it is awesome!
Just curious why you chose the 35mm 1.6 when in your other video you recommended the 35mm 1.7 over the 1.6?
Really great video !! Shows what you can do with next to nothing. You could also throw a hand held stabiliser to help with the jitter, but the footage you got is really cool there. Almost has a slight retro cinema feel. Thumbs up from me
the kit lens 18-55 haas a very good image stabilization
Right on! Thanks for the info Lefteris!
I believe the 15-45 and 22 do also.
@@jaxw2628 The Canon EOS M 22mm F2.0 is a great lens for the EOS series, but unfortunately it does not have image stabilization.
I love that shaky camera and the imperfect focus kind of style.
This is really neat for such a low price. What kind of continuous record times can you get from it? Does it over heat after 15 mins or so?
it goes up to 29mins internally, with standard codec, and magic lantern allows to override this by making it continuous (albeit losing a few frames... better have a second unit if you need a continuous shot e.g. for events, especially for covering the loss of the audio frames)
Thank you. 👍
it will not overheat. Just filmed an event for >3h and i also didnt noticed any frame drops between 2 clips, just had to change the batterys two times
If you want continuous recording you need the best SD card you can afford. On many DSLRs, just switching from class 10 to class 12 or UHS remove the "30 minutes wall" easily.
Jas Bataille
The 30minutes wall is due to tax regulation in EU, not due to SD card performance.
Been using a similar set up for the past year and loving it!
One year later and Amazon is up to almost 600
It's 260 used
@@CrowClouds no its not
@@Symeeen I just got mine for $147 used on Amazon.
150 usd used
This is why I love your channel! I am definitely on a very strapped budget! Thanks a lot!
What’s that tripod the camera is on?
Love this. Needing a separate camera for a sniper shot of wedding ceremonies. Going to consider this one! Thanks!

Could anyone point me to a suitable alternative for the step up ring for the filter here indicated? The link doesn't seem to work anymore. Thank you!
Alessio Capurro did u find a solution?
@@florianbitterlin3989 Unfortunately not, I haven't really delved into it though... just postponed the purchase of a filter for the time being.
EDIT: I've just realized there's a nice close up of the very thing at 2:48. Just look up K&F Concept Step Up on Amazon and you should find it; also make sure it goes from 37mm to 52mm as he says at 2:56.
Looks like the answer was right under our noses the whole time lol.
I have not taking pic or video from my eos m for past 1 year. Thank u for giving me inspiration back
Is it only me who thinks that lens is total crap?!
Arcanineisthebest that's a great point, when you pay $30 for a lens it doesn't have to be the one you use every day as long as it looks nice for some situations.
one mans trash is another mans treasure!
He had the lens at 1.6 he said it in the video... u want clearer edges open it up to about 8... it’s not a fixed 1.6 I’m assuming.
That's a decent setup, usually these type of videos end up ballooning into some expensive add-ons but this one was really helpful!
Just saying this camera has a really shit auto focus.
republic1001 he stated it was manual focus
Love your work man.
I love your comments at the last, “Come on guys!.....” You’ve got me. We are looking for budget camera so that why we are here.
Wow amazing setup!!! Perfect for someone trying to dab into video. Never knew EOS-M cams were that good especially that lens.
Four years later, what would you choose for the same budget setup? Is a M50 more appropriate today?
Man this is a great budget combo. I wish I had info like this when I was a student.
OMG I love those videos of your son, the colours, the DoF, running though the leaves. I have an EOS-M I was about to put on eBay (i bough the M5 recently) and you know, magic latern and getting that F1.6 seems pretty attractive now :)
I used to shoot with the original eosM, and it's great for someone whose just starting.
That's what i started with! A great beginner camera
I just bought another one just to install Magic Lantern , and with this second EOS M is really gonna be for film projects
That footage is absolutely amazing! Love it!
Literally have been using this exact setup for a few months now, such a good deal for the money. Really enjoy your videos, especially the budget friendly kit
Omg this is great for someone wanting to get into video but not want to spend much. So I'm heading over to ebay now. Epic.
I own this camera and it was a just incase camera for me. After seeing this! No words. lol Thanks for sharing!
Looks like an awesome setup! Shots look better than my T3i. I need stabilization though.
Thanks. I’ll try it on my m-100. I miss my manual lens, back in my “film” days
Wow ! you are pushing the limits of a small cam setup ! this is killer :) Awesome Video Caleb Pike :)
Any one else have similar result?
kingjoy getting some love yes!
