Great video! I remember the day the C100 was released to market and how big of a deal that actually was at the time. I think today we now look at the Sony FX3 in somewhat of a similar light.
I'm still using Mark II after almost 10 years with my C70 as a main camera. It's incredibly easy to match them, which is almost impossible with any mirrorless, the image is too digital on all mirrorless cameras, no mater how good or expensive they are.
I shot over 70 TV spots last two years, I would say that 35 were shot with the Canon C100 (with an atomos ninja v) cinema lenses, etc. I know that in two or three instances the footage was bumped to 4K, ALL CLIENTS and AGENCIES were very happy. If you have one KEEP IT, this camera will be like the ARRI SR 16mm, a legend.
Shot my indie feature on this with an Anamorphic Lens. Not an ARRI or Red, but it definitely has a cinema feel to it. The ND filter is a game changer. For those on a budget, get this camera. Hell, if you have to shoot on your phone, get it done. Hollywood is not coming and knocking on your door. Thanks for the review.
Where can I watch your feature film? Would love to see it! Especially to see how the camera with the anamorphic lens looks. I'm trying to decide whether to get this camera!
I have used the C100 for many projects including broadcast TV commercials. It is a true cinema camera, not a hybrid. People want 4K or DCI, but you can achieve amazing results in 1080p using a high-quality, fast lens and shooting log. I personally like the Zeiss Milvus lenses with apertures at T1.4, but you get the idea. And let us remember that broadcast TV is still not 4K.
I sometimes cover events for non-profits that I work with. That means there is no real budget and I just bring my own private gear. Picking up something like this to elevate the quality further is a great idea. Thank you for the video.
I had a C100 mark1 when they first came out and it was revolutionary compared to the Sony EX3 I was using - when I needed 4K for a project I bought a Sony F7 but hated using it compared to the C100 (better quality but felt like a backward setep) - so bought a C200 as soon as it was released - I'm still getting lovely pictures from it now and although I have a couple of 6K BMPC, URSAs and a LUMIX S5II - it's still my 'go to' run and gun camera - modular but solid as they come, long battery, built in ND, beautiful picture even though it's 8bit apart from the RAW (which seems to make no real difference), great in low light and useable built in viewfinder. Out of all my cameras, when I fly and need something totally reliable, it's the camera I take. I think that the new pricing makes it a bargain. I still have my C100 and used it for an event - picture-wise it totally held up against the C200 and Blackmagics.
I love the C100 Mark 2. It really is next level even 10 years later almost. It's all about how you use it and what settings you decide to use. I need to learn more about it while using it in certain situations. My question to other filmmakers out there is where to you learn more about cameras best? Is it books or UA-cam? please send me suggestions
It's mostly just intuition through practice. Cameras are a medium. It's the artist behind the medium that's more worthy of study. Because any manual behind a camera, is all that's technically needed. And there are also art fundamentals/theory. I use cameras for observation, because sometimes I need reference for drawings or animation. So I am not primarily a photographer. From my experience, it's a lot of fun looking at techniques from different fields of art. And then reapplying it to my own work. For example, Akira Kurosawa is an amazing director. That made a lot of famous films, with a lot of great composition and movement. And Power Rangers is really good for studying things like choreography. Even knowing obscure things like animal behavior, can also help when planning a photo or video.
I used one for years to make a living, and the image is great, I always used the WideDR profile as log breaks easily with 24mbps. I think it's worth external recording with it if you can for the higher bitrate and 4:2:2. TBH I wouldn't want to give up 4K acquisition these days, but I still think it's a great camera.
It's a wonderful camera. The mark 2 has the *much* better EVF (which is amazing in bright sun), the AF as standard (it was an add-on for the C100), and the screen is a full flip-out. It's also hardly any more expensive. On that screen, it's OLED. If it had 10-bit 4K, I'd never replace it. I love this thing. Next to the very latest 4K 10bit cameras coming out, its image holds up but is definitely outshined. Personally, I think 4K is a massively over-hyped advent, but when you combine its resolution with 10-bit, you get such smooth gradients that it really does take the image up a level.
Pretty much why I went for the C200. 4K and RAW recording. I love the images I get from that camera, especially the skin tones. That's not to take away anything from the C100 though. It's a great camera.
Throughout my years of professional work, the C100mk II ranks in my top 2 favorite digital cameras of all time. Still a solid choice in 2023 for 1080p capture and delivery.
@@gurugamer8632 Because the C100 MK II does not shoot in 4k. It has a 4k sensor that down rez's the footage in camera. So basically, the 1080p footage you capture is actually down razzed 4k which gives you great crisp images.
Have have the C100 original and I still use it as my go to camera on set. All my videos on my channel have been shot with that camera with my camera 2 being the RP to go along with my work flow. And even then I choose my c100 more than the rp. From video one on my channel to the very last video on my channel it has stayed consistently killing it with work flow.
Woah! I love everything about this, the form factor, the battery life, the XLR, the NDs, and especially the price! I'm definitely going to look for one of these! Great video... Thank you!
I'm curious how it would do for a live stream camera. I used to have a Canon XA50 but it fell in high winds. I need a replacement for it but I don't want to spend thousands. Something like this, with interchangeable lenses would be perfect for what I do.
I am a total n00b to this stuff and didn't even know this was a thing that could be done. This is awesome. And i think this is the kind of camera i want to get just because it seems like such a great "starter" camera.
Totally right. I regret having sold it, since many jobs I've made were still exported in 1080 and I loved the form factor and ease of use of this camera. Iconic.
I remember when this thing came out. At the same time Ridley Scott had just shot "Prometheus" in 8K RED Raw and i 4K was really actually becoming the norm in the semo-pro and higher segment of cameras. I loved what i saw that came from this camera in terms of picture quality. It was not vulgar over-sharp but aliasingfree and really beautiful. And the Formfactor was also just right down my alley. To me it reminded me a little bit of the Canon Scoopic camera range from the 60s and 70s. I still need to get my hands on one of these because i still love it and feel like wanting to work with it.
It's my A cam, but that's mostly because I have about $17 available for an upgrade. Beautiful wonderful camera. I only wish I could fly it on a gimbal. Couldn't make it happen, so I locked it off and used a 4 ft slider for important push-ins to a character in an important moment, and for smoother movement, I flew the Rebel T3i on a Merlin Steadicam.
This was my first camera in 2015 or 2016! I loved it! I made it a workhorse, I beat it up and it survived. I loved everything I shot on it, but in the end, found that despite the image quality that still held up, I was needing something that offered 4K and 6K and higher frame rates. I moved onto the BMPCC 6K (og) in 2020 and have two of those now. I just wish Black Magic Design could figure out the battery life and nice top handle like the Canon C100. I know they offer the battery grip for the 6K pros now and they added ND filters, so I might end up with one of those.
Thanks for sharing Ryan! I worked with black magic cameras for corporate work and like you said the image quality is phenomenal, but wish it did have the longer batter and functionality like the C100
Bit of a trip down memory lane for this one Nate, thanks for posting. Going to get my own C100 out of its box this weekend and give it some much needed attention. Forgot how much I enjoyed using the C100. It’s where it all began for me.
Hey man! Great to hear! I’m curious about finding some older cameras that I’ve always wanted to try. Perhaps original bmpcc, Canon XC10, C200. So many great cameras out there!
@@NatesFilmTutorials I’ve used the C200 quite a bit and while it is the natural successor to the C100, it didn’t quite have the same feel and use (although, 10 stops of built in ND is great and it’s headphone preamp is actually quite good)

I recently got this same setup c100 mk1 with the sigma 18-35. Im loving it so far wanted to get into the cinema camera world but didn’t want to break the bank. It’s definitely still a very capable camera. Great video sir!
However, I found that the specifications of the Canon C100 only allow for shooting Full HD videos and do not support the recording of 4K videos. However, in your video, it was mentioned that it can shoot 4K videos.
i still have my mk1, but haven't powered it on in years. not sure why i hang onto it, but it gave me a heck of a lot of mileage when it was my main cam
A lot of people really misunderstood how the sensor on this camera worked. To simplify it down, the camera was not ever downscaling a 4k image. It was using each grouping of 4 pixels to capture individual red/blue/green information (two of the 4 were used for green I believe). This was important because it was the absolute best way to capture color information, where as most other cameras have to interpret the data through a bayer filter.
This was my first cinema camera. A GH5S replaced it and I was regretting it ever since (demand for 4K sadly). I now use the FX6 which is in some way a nice throwback to my trusty c100mkii.
I actually pulled a C100 MKI that I was given a number of years ago out last week, so the timing of your video is great. Mine is the original without the AF upgrade so I'm looking into that, but the $500 cost is pretty steep. I also wish that 60p was an option on it, but will adapt. Thanks for the review.
@@NatesFilmTutorials Canon Canada still does actually. Also, there is a great hack out there for assigning AF Lock to a button on the handgrip to push when you move between objects so that the AF doesn't adjust to focus on something way in the background for the moment when you are panning (if that makes sense). @@whistlingdavetaviner3663 We still have a C100MK1 as well. It never gets used these days, but no...the Mark1 has no aesthetic advantage over the Mark2. In fact, for some reason I think our MK1 has a warmer flatter color look at any setting than the MK2s we have. Not sure why, it might just be ours, but I find the MK2 is just a better overall camera and on the used market, likely around the same price as a MK1. I'm still using Mark II after almost 10 years with my C70 as a main camera. It's incredibly easy to match them, which is almost impossible with any mirrorless, the image is too digital on all mirrorless cameras, no mater how good or expensive they are.
Use a vintage lenes
best advice using it?
I shot over 70 TV spots last two years, I would say that 35 were shot with the Canon C100 (with an atomos ninja v) cinema lenses, etc. I know that in two or three instances the footage was bumped to 4K, ALL CLIENTS and AGENCIES were very happy. If you have one KEEP IT, this camera will be like the ARRI SR 16mm, a legend.
Wow, You sound Rich 💰
Interesting that you use such expensive lenses with such a cheap camera. May I ask why you don't use a more modern camera?
Agreed!
I sometimes cover events for non-profits that I work with. That means there is no real budget and I just bring my own private gear. Picking up something like this to elevate the quality further is a great idea. Thank you for the video.
They scale very well to 4k with Topaz Ai, also somewhat compensates for the low bitrate
Any examples you can link
Love to hear! Thanks for sharing!
I love when old cameras get great new reviews!
5Dii is next!
@@NatesFilmTutorials oh yessss! The GOAT 🤘
I started my company with these cameras. I still use them time to time. Absolute tanks.
🔥🎥
Preach 👍🏾
Why not 4k?
@@gurugamer8632 Because the C100 MK II does not shoot in 4k. It has a 4k sensor that down rez's the footage in camera. So basically, the 1080p footage you capture is actually down razzed 4k which gives you great crisp images.
@@305kubrick iPhone Better then
@@gurugamer8632 iPhone is great in many regards, but sometimes you just need a proper camera with professional built in features for certain jobs.
I own one. Used it for long form events. Love the image it produces. The preamps of the C100 is also really good.
Isn’t this cinematch plugin the same thing as the cst? 4:52
The mk1 was my introduction to a cinema camera. This was great!
Appreciate the kind words Chris!
That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Woah! I love everything about this, the form factor, the battery life, the XLR, the NDs, and especially the price! I'm definitely going to look for one of these! Great video... Thank you!
Thats some of the best C100 footage I've seen. Really good stuff man, great video.
Appreciate it Jake!

@@NatesFilmTutorials I’ve used the C200 quite a bit and while it is the natural successor to the C100, it didn’t quite have the same feel and use (although, 10 stops of built in ND is great and it’s headphone preamp is actually quite good)
@@jw_film C200 was a big disappointment to me - no 422 10 bit internal? C'mon Canon do you ever get it right??!!!
@@Sutterjack It was a glaring omission on their part and put me on the route of owning the EVA but I have shot quite a bit with the c200 and it’s excellent, but should really have had 10bit.
Holy Moly! The image color is gorgeous!
Just bought one with the dual pixel autofocus upgrade. 244 hours. $659 USD. I'm so psyched!
I recently got this same setup c100 mk1 with the sigma 18-35. Im loving it so far wanted to get into the cinema camera world but didn’t want to break the bank. It’s definitely still a very capable camera. Great video sir!
Love to hear that other people are still using it too! The sigma really does make this camera shine too!
I’ve always told myself when I can I’ll buy one just for fun filming.
Really enjoyed this , thanks mate!
It is such a fun camera! Thanks Joel! What do you shoot on currently?
This is exactly why I kept my C100MK2. We have C70 and I find myself using the C100 alot still
A lot of people really misunderstood how the sensor on this camera worked. To simplify it down, the camera was not ever downscaling a 4k image. It was using each grouping of 4 pixels to capture individual red/blue/green information (two of the 4 were used for green I believe). This was important because it was the absolute best way to capture color information, where as most other cameras have to interpret the data through a bayer filter.
you're literally describing a bayer filter. read the wikipedia page for it.
Nice! I don’t believe Canon offers that AF upgrade anymore. But if your able to snag a C100 ii you’ll be able to unlock that and 60p!
@@NatesFilmTutorials Canon Canada still does actually. Also, there is a great hack out there for assigning AF Lock to a button on the handgrip to push when you move between objects so that the AF doesn't adjust to focus on something way in the background for the moment when you are panning (if that makes sense). Cheers!
Just ordered one. Should go well with my EOS-M with Magic Lantern Crop Mood. The C100 for longer clips and EOS for shorter ones.
Sweet! How do you like it? I’ve been looking into magic lantern again, because I’ll be getting a 5d ii soon and want to experiment with it.
@@NatesFilmTutorials It is pretty awesome but it takes some messing around and learning. Here is a sample clip from it I made yesterday... ua-cam.com/video/efHvZKdFDNI/v-deo.html Could be still processing to 4k as I just uploaded it.
This looks absolutely STUNNING. I definitely want to pick this camera up and I could kiss you on the mouth for that cinematch walkthrough. 🙌
😚
As a skateboarder/skate filmer, that top handle looks great. Along with a proper fisheye, it'd be reminiscent of the old classic Sony VX (in utility as opposed to form).
Love this, but where are you finding this for $500??
I have one and 3 C100MKIIs. They all still get used regularly and still make us money. Anyone sleeping on these is missing out. Handily the best camera for the coin now and still relevant.
Hi -- I love the image quality of the C100. Can you get this same look from the C100 Mk2? There are those who say that the Mk2's image quality is a bit more video-like compared to the more 'filmic' look of the Mk1.
If you are looking to pick up one of these cinema cams, its worth it to hold out for MK2.
Imagine a black magic pocket in this form factor😅
That'd be too smart! 🤣
I used one of these cameras at college, it is the best camera, for starters.
Any thoughts from the crowd on EF to E mount Metabones adaptors on this vintage wonder?
Beautiful form factor. And it's clearly capable as well.
My camera is a Canon C100 Mk i with Atomos Ninja V monitor recorder and the lens is a Proscar Anamorphic on a Nikon 50mm or 28mm prime lens. You are right about it being INSANE but today there are medications with very little side effects to take care of that. Okay, going to watch your video now after having commented first to your title.
Thanks so much for this video. I’ve been really wanting a cinema camera but can’t afford a FX6. For the money I may have to pick one of these up and see how it is.
I remember drooling and dreaming of owning it when it was released.
would I have to start over I probaly get this one instead of spending more on my first camera and using the money I can safe with this thing for other gear like audio or lightning or gimbals
Where did you get the idea that it's a sub sampled 4k sensor? I was always under the impression it's solid HD sensor not 4k
I have been using 2 of the original Mk 1’s for 10 years and still use then to this very day. I now record using ProRes HQ on Ninjas and then I can mix the two C100’s with image from the 10 bit ProRes HQ that’s I record on a third camera a EOS R with Shogun 7 and three shots are so close you its easy to grade and match in multi cam edits. I love these cameras.

You made me want to buy it. I will receive it next week and I’m just too excited. I plan to use it for my next short film.
Have fun with it!
the c100 was world's apart from being described as insane in it's release date...claiming it'a insane in 2023 is beyond wild.
You could even say it’s….insane
Wow! Thank you for this absolutely brilliant review!! This camera is still insane!
Appreciate it Greg! I might revisit some older cameras, do you have any recommendations?
@@NatesFilmTutorials Oh! That would be so nice! Can you review Canon 850D? Its from 2020. I got it few weeks ago from my wife and try make some films, mostly nature/adventures. Weird in this camera is tealy bad 4k compare to absolutely genius 1080p. So, can you check that? 😊
I'm keeping my C100 mk2 with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 forever!! I use it for corporate videos-mostly interviews. I got recently a Sony FX30 and it sure is crisp in 4k but I have used them both for interviews and when the final deliverable is 1080p (almost every time with my client) I use the FX30's 4k footage and reframe it as needed. I wanted to buy the C300mk2 for its 4k but not sure anymore...for live events -conferences and even some wedding ceremonies I use a Canon XF300 cammcorder. Not sure a cinema camera will work well. I shoot mostly by myself. Anyway, great camera C100! is the C200 a big upgrade? Whatever I buy now has to have 4k.
I shoot with a Panasonic GH4 and I'm looking to "upgrade" to something. Still can't decide what. C100 sounds really great (I have a couple Canon DSLRs so already have some EF lenses), but the lack of 4K is a dealbreaker. Any thoughts on something similarly priced that shoots 4K?
The 4K on the GH4 is a solid image. Perhaps consider a used GH5?
Can we get this with an RF mount?
used this camera for so many years, it's a tank and the form factor is perfect. Now is obsolete for the file quality and no 50p. beautiful camera back in the daY
Where did you get it?
I have a Canon XA-30 and it's been really good. If I step up from there, which camera is good value and one up from the C-100 in your opinion?
That was my run and gun camera back in the day. C300 also.
Is this better for filmmaking then the Black Magic cinema pocket camera?
It depends on your use case. The Black magic does have better image quality, but I'd say the C100 is more versatile.
The file size too.
It’s soo small and easy to work with
Ive got the FX3 but I'm really tempted after seeing your video to buy one to play around with
It sure is fun!

Also, have you experimented with upscaling the c100 footage and comparing it to say a modern 4 k camera? Might make a good video
I've always loved the form factor and functionality of this camera and wanted to try using one. I think with the battery life, decent autofocus, and XLR inputs this would be a perfect UA-cam talking head camera.
Could I have a feedback about the usage on portrait and live? Actually social media like Instagram are (unfortunately?) on portrait! I would also use it on IG live broadcast. Thanks for your opinion :)
Hi! What lense do you recommend for don't time filmmakers on this camera?? Thanks for your videos!!!
Where does one get one for $500? Used prices are 3 to 5 times higher than that from Amazon & B&H.
Still have my old c100mkii and it rocks!
At the end of the day I want to make money and now blow it on expensive gear / hard drives. This camera is a workhorse and if you’re delivering to the web, there are no real compromises.
One of my first introductions to cinema cameras back in 2014. Before then I was primarily shooting and didn't care on what ever camera for fun. Using the C100 was eye opening. Still a great camera even today.
What about transiting to Davinci Wide Gamut?
That footage looks so good!
Appreciate it Mickey!
How can I learn more about the censor being 4k downscaled? If it has a 4k sensor, why is there no way to get a 4k image? I assume there's not a way, I'm interested in why that's the case and why a camera would be designed like that?
Also, I've really enjoyed my C100 so it's nice to see it get some love still
I just scored a C300 without the microphone inputs or screen for $320, amazing camera for what it has. Mine doesn't have the dual pixel autofocus, but it's still super useful.
