Remarkable isn't it? a revolutionary product could be so discredited by critics right after launch, it may flop or fail sales right away, consumer staying away from it as they also believe feature and price balance is too off at that time. But after years when it becomes more affordable on 2nd hand market it evolves into a true available piece that more people discover, making it more time- and priceless altogether suddenly. Canon M is exactly that for video, it's simplicity combined with later developed sophistication. Nikon DF for stills for example, turned out also exactly the product people wanted years later, a timeless piece that people may remember the end of Nikon F era by and its entire historic arsenal of kick ass native glass for stills.
I don’t understand these days - reviewing digital cameras from ‘back in the day’! With everything being equal - you cannot reviewing ’old’ cameras with current technologies in ‘today’s’ digital camera facilities or options! It is futile! I still use my EOS-M, originally bought new in 2012! Still works and it is converted to IR 830nm - producing awesome black & white images! Otherwise ….. I excellent review - but cut out the ‘sniggering’ and joking!

Hi IMCE, maybe you can help have Canon EOS M mirrorless camera with ML installed, and tried to power it with a portable light Newer control unit, through dummy battery set up, there was an orange flashing for a moment then went dead, and now it won't power up. Does you know what do you think it might be?
I love the way you take your time with explaining things about the EOS M, and I feel like your content is much more suited for actually learning how to use the EOS M w/ ML. It would be great to see a step by step tutorial from you on how to actually setup the more stable modes (1080/5k frtp) and process them in MLV for editing in Davinci or Final Cut. Out of the handful EOS M dedicated creators, I still have yet to see anyone deliver a straightforward tutorial of how to actually use ML to shoot video.
I bought 2 excellent quality eos-m cameras from Japan (ebay) around 180 dollars. I think they were made there so there were quite a few advertised (about 1 year ago) not sure now.
I picked up my EOS M about 4 years ago for pennies compared to what the body sells for today. If I remember correctly the body, battery and charger, no lenses, for $88. Now can’t touch one for less than $200.

I bought the Canon EOS M because I saw what it can do with ML software :) I love this kit :) I have been having fun taking pictures and videos for a year now :) On top of that I can develop and process raw video files even on my old computer with an i5 4460 processor, 8Gb of RAM and a GTX 970 4Gb GPU :)
Yeah, I love having the flexibility of using EOS M with ML to get high quality RAW video files and photos. I actually use ML with the M to take photos quite often. And yes about computer processing power, that is definitely a benefit to using ML with the EOS M.
Great video. I have a Canon EOS M, but I'm not using it anymore. Do you think this camera with Magic Lantern is good for shooting a video like yours with a canon 22mm lens? A video for a UA-cam channel with a face shot inside a studio with some led and lights? Thanks
Thanks so much!! I definitely think you could make that setup work with the eos m and 22mm lens for youtube, but I think it could be challenging with not having autofocus. If you have a studio setup where you have a stationary camera and can use an external monitor and don't mind the extra bit of post processing, I think you could get some great looking talking head video for your channel. I looked into the EOS M with Magic Lantern, and it's missing a lot you'd need. 1080p recording is poor, there is no view finder, the screen is fixed and non-touch screen, in these high resolution RAW formats you can't view the entire screen in the view finder, there's pink frames in your footage, battery is small. For $50 it would be an exciting camera for someone impoverished, but for $200... not particularly. You'd be better off starting with a lot better camera. RAW video isn't very great or a game changer... it creates huge files you really don't enjoy working with, that require extra steps to process before you drag them into your video editor. One extra headache most video editors don't want, esp. if you have a lot of clips.
Just purchased my eos m2 and whenever I capture images they turn out a lot brighter in the playback than what I saw on the LiveView LCD when I was capturing them and I don't see anyway to control canon's "exposure simulation" on this camera.... I have found some work-arounds but i'm curious to know if you have faced the same issues with photos on this camera
thx for the vid...........i owned and sold this thing.........the footage is just not good enough for the hassle........IMO anyone who says this is a capable cineCam is straight lying. .......it is not.......its a recipe for desaster..............only cool thing about it is the extreme crop modes in combination with C-Mount/CCTV-Lenses

I copied some of settings of zeek and few others for video recording. I set video to 1080p raw but notice that its not saved to sd card can you going that I may be doing wrong? Thanks in Advance
Thanks so much!! I'm so glad you found the video helpful! Sorry you've been having trouble with the 1080p mode, that's frustrating. If you copied the settings from Zeek, the different custom modes should be preset with optimal recording options. I would try uninstalling everything and reinstalling it, to see if that helps. Once you do that if you select the custom mode that says 1080p, the camera will automatically reload that module (kinda looks like the camera is shutting off, then coming back on) and from there you should be good for recording. It was very helpful as I have a Mac so the tip to erase the sd card and change the format to MS DOS 32 was probably what enabled me to get the ML files onto my sd card ready to open up on the eos m. Awesome video and great points on the advantages of shooting RAW. I use my EOSM and colored with Phantom Utopia Lut and love the organic footage I get out of the DNG Lossless files. It's not sharper than my X-H1, nor does it perform as good in low-light. Just recently I shot my first short documentary and I love how the footage came out. (sorry about the shameless plug!) 😅
I'm very interested on buying this camera with ML to start a YT channel and other cinematographic projects... I'd like you to make a video using it as your camera, instead of the one you are using on this video to record your face, just to see how it would look like with that illumination, and that framing. I'll probably being using a 7artisians 25mm 1.8 or the canon ef 22mm f2.0 or maybe invest a bit more in a sigma 18-35mm
My answer to this question would depend on the budget you're working with. If you really love RAW video and all the cinema processing tools this camera has but want something more stable with a predictable workflow, I'd highly recommend the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It comes in at a $1300 price tag, but you also get Resolve editing/color grading software, so that's a huge bonus. I've had the BMPCC4K for going on two years now, and it's an amazing camera.
fyi a 200 mb/s memory card eliminates short shhooting times and dropped frames...5k raw as well as all the other modes work just fine if your card is fast enough
I'm a fourth year film editing major at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Serbia, and I started being interested in cameras once I shot my first 20 minute short film. I know a solid amount about the technical stuff (waveforms, CC/CD, luma keys, codecs and all that) so your video just convinced me to buy this beautiful little camera. I love the eos-m and your video is top notch, my only pet peeve is whites can turn pinkish when some parts of the scenes are very bright. I even noticed some of your footage (white skies) can go pinkish...
Thanks so much, I appreciate it! Yes, you do definitely see that sometimes brights skies tend to go a bit pinkish and the camera doesn't have the strongest highlight roll off.
Those are clipped highlights. MLVApp isn't too bad at hightlight reconstruction (especially with UncoloscienceFix processing instead of camera color matrix) but I woud recommend using Rawtherapee with DNGs instead, as MLVapp automatically applies an S-curve to the whole image if creative adjustments is toggled on. Not to mention the horrendous "cinematic" cyan shift. Rawtherapee on the other hand will not only allow you to work with a true neutral/RAW image and can then be used to create LUTs, but has better options and control over highlight reconstruction and debayering/demosaicing (for instance it can do AMaZe + VNG4, correct for false colors, ratio corrected demosaicing for astrophotography etc)
The batteries are dogshit. Crashes a lot under magic lantern. Not for beginners at all. Advanced learning curve. Still a very cool camera. Hate the touchscreen though.
Is it worth buying newer version of canon EOS m mark 3 or can I buy used canon eos m 2012 and side load with magic lantern, which has better value for money ?
This video is great, and the results are very interesting. But talking about an iPhone 15 Pro democratising professional video is absolutely laughable. Anyone who can afford such an extortionately expensive iPhone can easily afford an EOS M, use magic lantern and get a far more professional looking image far cheaper than the iPhone and learn far more about cameras in the process. The only thing in the world benefitted by adding features like this to iPhones is selling more iPhones
I used MLV on Canon 550d years ago.. shooting HD footage at 50p .... it was dodgy and glichy but the footage when i came out was the best i've ever shot and i look back at now! Intresting to see what MLV is on these days! great video!

Is the Canon EOS M the most stable and reliable build of Magic Lantern (compared to all the other compatible ML Canon cameras)? Is that the reason why the Canon M is promoted so heavily on the internet?
You can take pictures with the EOS M and ML, it works very well. In terms of auto focus, I've never used it with ML since the autofocus with the EOS M isn't great to begin with.

Ugh, that's frustrating. I know there have been a couple new builds in the last year that most people are saying are pretty stable. If those don't work, I might look at a slightly older build, I'm actually running one from early 2021 I think.
I do believe that there is a build of ML for the M200, but from what I understand it's not nearly as developed as the builds for the EOS M. I know Zeek has done a video about ML and the M200, you might check that out. Hope this helps!
I use my canon eos m to shoot wrestling vlogs and use my canon eos m2 to shoot cooking content. I've built them both out into cinema rigs and I love this camera. I love the look of raw video and shooting in widescreen format.

Hey, I have no experience with cameras but I want to make a short film. I still don't know which camera to choose, do you think this EOS M will be good?
I do think the camera is a great choice for making a short film, but like I mentioned, it does take a bit of work to get going and really understand and shoot with it. I might recommend getting a different, possibly used camera and shooting your first film on that, then moving to the EOS M. That way you've gone through the process of making a short film first, without the extra layers the EOS M brings.
I have had an EOS-M for years. Never used it mutch....I'm a photographer. Don't do much video. Love my DSLR's and viewfinders and....yes. But now I have suddenly bougth an external mic, a couple og LED panels and....let's try this tiny thing out. :) I actually love it. :)
Magic Lantern is one of my To Do Projects. I remember getting a Canon 5D mk ii which at the time was a pretty advanced camera that was recommended by the ML community. Not sure if things have been updated, but if a Canon EOS M is too limiting check out the 5D.
Maybe I missed something, but the autofocus on the 15-45 doesn’t seem to work, wether in photo or video mode. Have I left something out? I mainly shoot with the 7artisans 25mm1.8, but just picked up the 15-45 for image stabilisation, reach, and…autofocus. I’m not looking for constant AF in video, but simply a half-shutter focus set, since eyeballing it on the screen is hard. Any ideas? 🥲
I have a question. How ı can use my magic lantern settings to adobe premiere ? In MlvApp ı can export my settings but they exporting "marrxml" and when ı want to use this to preset in my video, premiere doesnt support this.
If bought my EOS M end of 2017 as a cheaper alternative to the original BMPCC. I rigged it out and did a lot of stuff with it. After the Pocket 4K released I’ve ordered one and used the EOS M primary for Photography. Just a few weeks ago I upgraded to the EOS M50 II for Photo which is a substantial upgrade. I’ve given my M to my mother but this little camera will always have a special place in my heart. I often had it in my case when I was on a shoot, because there were always people who wanted to get into video but were afraid of the cost. Then I always pulled out the little EOS M and showed them how cheap it was to get a great camera. My biggest complaints about the EOS M were the bad HDMI out and in hindsight, in comparison to the M50 the bad battery life. (Didn’t bother me for video since I used a dummy battery)
Excellent and informative video!! The EOS M was released October 2012. It was about $900 USD with the EF-M 18-55. A little less with the 22mm f2 pancake. The hybrid on sensor AF was sluggish and not refined or ready for release. The review sites trashed it over that and the high price. They overlooked the excellent image quality (for the day) and it's magnesium alloy pro build body. Canon cut the price by about 60% and sold them off. I bought mine July 2013 for $350 USD. Got the 22mm f2 right after for $100 USD and then the EF to EF-M for $40 USD new. Fire sale prices. You Can't get OEM for those anymore new or used. A couple of FW upgrades helped the AF quite a bit. I found holding the camera at a slight angle helped the AF even more. I'm primarily a stills shooter but this applies to video too. Not that you would want to tilt the camera to get it to AF when shooting video.. LOL! I'm sure you film folks shoot with manual focus. ;-) I think the hybid AF, which preceded duel pixel, looks for vertical lines to lock on. Comparing that to DSLR AF sensors. In their lower lines, Canon used cross type AF sensors in the center and horizontal sensors (for vertical lines) for all others locations in the AF point matrix. Higher end cameras had all cross type AF points, more AF points and duel cross in the center. Think a + and X over each other for the center sensor. From what I think I know, the newer second generation DPAF detects horizontal and vertical lines. The ability for phase detect to look at both horizontal and vertical lines makes the AF faster and more accurate. Gives it the ability to find focus where just a horizontal sensor wouldn't. That would impact DPAF the same way. Anyways, Canon pulled the M line for the North American market for about 3 years and returned with the M3 well after it had been out everywhere else. The original M was considered to be a mirrorless Rebel T4i. It has more in common with the 60D than the 70D. I think it's the perfect street photography camera. Especially with the 22mm. It's also my favorite to use on a gimble when I do shoot video. I hope this info helps. imaging-resource dot com gives a good review of the M.

Hello, I need help! I can't get to install ML on my canon M! I do not know what I'm doing wrong! I have formatted a 128g sd card with a speed of 200mb/s on my mac version Monterrey 12.2.1 in MS-DOS (FAT), then I have formatted the card in the camera I have copied the three files on the card and the firmware of the camera is 2.0.2 which I think is the correct one to install ML, it tries but it tells me: ML directory not found! Please copy all ML files. Firmware 0 Bootdisk -1 RAM_EXE -1 Update-1 I have also downloaded new files on Dann's page, but everything remains the same. What I can do? Thanks guys !

Great video! I have two of those in my cupboard. I tried ML about 10 years ago and it was not stable and had freezing problem with certain lenses. Time to blow dust off my EOS M.

Yes, you have. The Eos M is a MILC, so it doesn't have any lenses on it by default. If you are on a budget, you can easily buy some M42 mount lens (Pentacon 29 2.8, Helios 44-2, etc), and the cheaper ones are less than 30$. I bought my Helios for like 10$

@@Plusmonkey Yeah, I totally feel you on that. It's really unfortunate how Sony has handled some of their flagship cameras, particularly the A7Siii and just skipped all the firmware updates for it, but give them to all their other cameras.
I think the next best option for RAW 1080p video would be the original blackmagic pocket cinema camera. It's more expensive than the Canon EOS M, but you might be able to find it easier. Hope this helps!
Hi all, I have this camera, I purchased it in 2012 or 2013 when it was out new! I was looking into upgrading to a new camera to shoot video but now I've stumbled down this magic lantern rabbit hole and am reconsidering a need for a new budget film camera. I'm no film or camera expert, so some of this seems a little daunting. The reason I'm intersted in upgrading is primarily because I find the EOS M cannot shoot in any low light situations without a ton of grain, making my footage worthless. Would somebody with some more knowledge help me out? Am I better off getting a new budget film camera, or should I keep what I've got? If I keep it, how can I best shoot in low light situations?
Hi! Sorry for my late response on this! I would consider holding onto the EOS M and trying a couple things that might help with getting better lowlight video. I would make sure you're not shooting with anything slower than f2.8, maybe even f2. This will help you get the most light in the sensor. If you have the budget I would recommend the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, it's great in lowlight and one of my go to lenses for lowlight. Another option to get more light is invest in a viltrox speedbooster. This will allow you to adapt Canon EF glass and provide you with another stop of light, which can help a ton. Another tip, Don't be afraid to bump your ISO in some of those low light situations. ISO 200,400, and 800 I've found are all useable and can even be fairly well cleaned up in the edit with a bit of noise reduction. If you're looking to do a lot of regular filming in lowlight, I would recommend looking at some of Sony's cameras particularly their full frame cameras, because they do extremely well in lowlight. Hope this helps!!

I've been shooting non-stop with the EOS M + ML Crop Mood for the last two months because of it. My shit doesn't look right, yet, but I know it will get better with practice. Definitely a new lens with a lower F stop helped a lot shooting in low light. I ended up getting a 7artisans 25mm F1.8 used at a local camera store for under $80 CAD. Cheers!
I honestly don't get it. I've tried magic lantern before briefly and looked at other videos about it. The image quality is just meh 🤷♂️. Obviously at $250 or for me free because I happen to have the eos m, it's better than everything in that price class, but like this camera's competition isn't cinema cameras, it's basically any interchangeable lens camera that shoots 4k 10- bit log. And the workflow is so arduous that unless you're a very specific person without other options the time you waste with the camera will not be worth it at all.
I damaged my back a decade ago. So the DSLR and full frame lenses have sat in their bags since then. However, the Canon EOS-M was being sold off for just £200 brand new at that same time. So I bought three, one for throwing about, one for macro and a spare. I guess I now have a use for the spare. Who would have thought it, all those years ago. It almost seems a pity to open up its box after all this time. There can't be much new stock of this in the world now. Thanks for this video, it has wetted my appetite to get on the learning curve with Magic Lantern.

Actually, I can connect an Android phone as an external monitor, I have the phone mount for the camera, video capture and hdmi cable, so I can watch my face.

I found your videos on Canon EOS M and you triggered my mind, I didn't know about this possibility ;-)
I looked into the EOS M with Magic Lantern, and it's missing a lot you'd need.
1080p recording is poor, there is no view finder, the screen is fixed and non-touch screen, in these high resolution RAW formats you can't view the entire screen in the view finder, there's pink frames in your footage, battery is small. For $50 it would be an exciting camera for someone impoverished, but for $200... not particularly. You'd be better off starting with a lot better camera.
RAW video isn't very great or a game changer... it creates huge files you really don't enjoy working with, that require extra steps to process before you drag them into your video editor. One extra headache most video editors don't want, esp. if you have a lot of clips.

Just purchased my eos m2 and whenever I capture images they turn out a lot brighter in the playback than what I saw on the LiveView LCD when I was capturing them and I don't see anyway to control canon's "exposure simulation" on this camera.... I have found some work-arounds but i'm curious to know if you have faced the same issues with photos on this camera
When I have Magic Lantern on the EOS M it's still possible to shot on ordinary settings like 1080p, MPEG, etc..?
Yes! You can still record video in regular h.264 1080 format.

Sorry you've been having trouble with the 1080p mode, that's frustrating. If you copied the settings from Zeek, the different custom modes should be preset with optimal recording options. I would try uninstalling everything and reinstalling it, to see if that helps. Once you do that if you select the custom mode that says 1080p, the camera will automatically reload that module (kinda looks like the camera is shutting off, then coming back on) and from there you should be good for recording. I hope that helps and you can get recording raw soon! I also have a video about installing ML that you can check out too.

I had already looked at your video that you linked previously. It was very helpful as I have a Mac so the tip to erase the sd card and change the format to MS DOS 32 was probably what enabled me to get the ML files onto my sd card ready to open up on the eos m.

I use my EOSM and colored with Phantom Utopia Lut and love the organic footage I get out of the DNG Lossless files.
It's not sharper than my X-H1, nor does it perform as good in low-light. Just recently I shot my first short documentary and I love how the footage came out. (sorry about the shameless plug!) 😅

I'm very interested on buying this camera with ML to start a YT channel and other cinematographic projects... I'd like you to make a video using it as your camera, instead of the one you are using on this video to record your face, just to see how it would look like with that illumination, and that framing. I'll probably being using a 7artisians 25mm 1.8 or the canon ef 22mm f2.0 or maybe invest a bit more in a sigma 18-35mm

My answer to this question would depend on the budget you're working with. If you really love RAW video and all the cinema processing tools this camera has but want something more stable with a predictable workflow, I'd highly recommend the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. It comes in at a $1300 price tag, but you also get Resolve editing/color grading software, so that's a huge bonus. I've had the BMPCC4K for going on two years now, and it's an amazing camera.
fyi a 200 mb/s memory card eliminates short shhooting times and dropped frames...5k raw as well as all the other modes work just fine if your card is fast enough
I'm a fourth year film editing major at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Serbia, and I started being interested in cameras once I shot my first 20 minute short film. I know a solid amount about the technical stuff (waveforms, CC/CD, luma keys, codecs and all that) so your video just convinced me to buy this beautiful little camera. Can't wait to buy it and film some cool stuff.

I love the eos-m and your video is top notch, my only pet peeve is whites can turn pinkish when some parts of the scenes are very bright. I even noticed some of your footage (white skies) can go pinkish...
Thanks so much, I appreciate it! Yes, you do definitely see that sometimes brights skies tend to go a bit pinkish and the camera doesn't have the strongest highlight roll off.
Those are clipped highlights. MLVApp isn't too bad at hightlight reconstruction (especially with UncoloscienceFix processing instead of camera color matrix) but I woud recommend using Rawtherapee with DNGs instead, as MLVapp automatically applies an S-curve to the whole image if creative adjustments is toggled on. Not to mention the horrendous "cinematic" cyan shift. Rawtherapee on the other hand will not only allow you to work with a true neutral/RAW image and can then be used to create LUTs, but has better options and control over highlight reconstruction and debayering/demosaicing (for instance it can do AMaZe + VNG4, correct for false colors, ratio corrected demosaicing for astrophotography etc)
The batteries are dogshit. Crashes a lot under magic lantern. Not for beginners at all. Advanced learning curve.
Still a very cool camera. Hate the touchscreen though.

This video is great, and the results are very interesting. But talking about an iPhone 15 Pro democratising professional video is absolutely laughable. Anyone who can afford such an extortionately expensive iPhone can easily afford an EOS M, use magic lantern and get a far more professional looking image far cheaper than the iPhone and learn far more about cameras in the process. The only thing in the world benefitted by adding features like this to iPhones is selling more iPhones
I used MLV on Canon 550d years ago.. shooting HD footage at 50p .... it was dodgy and glichy but the footage when i came out was the best i've ever shot and i look back at now! Intresting to see what MLV is on these days! great video!
Hi. I have Canon EOS M mirrorless camera, with ML installed, and I tried to power it with a portable light Newer control unit, through dummy battery set up, there was an orange flashing for a moment then went dead, and now it won't power up. Does anyone know what do you think it might be?

Is the Canon EOS M the most stable and reliable build of Magic Lantern (compared to all the other compatible ML Canon cameras)? Is that the reason why the Canon M is promoted so heavily on the internet?

You can take pictures with the EOS M and ML, it works very well. In terms of auto focus, I've never used it with ML since the autofocus with the EOS M isn't great to begin with.

I need a stable build. I keep getting errors even when I reformatted my card and reinstalled Magic Lantern.
Ugh, that's frustrating. I know there have been a couple new builds in the last year that most people are saying are pretty stable. If those don't work, I might look at a slightly older build, I'm actually running one from early 2021 I think.
I have a Canon M200, do you think if I tried to load magic lantern on it that it would work? The OS is exactly the same as the M I believe.
I do believe that there is a build of ML for the M200, but from what I understand it's not nearly as developed as the builds for the EOS M. I know Zeek has done a video about ML and the M200, you might check that out. Hope this helps!

I use my canon eos m to shoot wrestling vlogs and use my canon eos m2 to shoot cooking content. I've built them both out into cinema rigs and I love this camera. I love the look of raw video and shooting in widescreen format.

Hey, I have no experience with cameras but I want to make a short film. I still don't know which camera to choose, do you think this EOS M will be good?
I do think the camera is a great choice for making a short film, but like I mentioned, it does take a bit of work to get going and really understand and shoot with it. I might recommend getting a different, possibly used camera and shooting your first film on that, then moving to the EOS M. That way you've gone through the process of making a short film first, without the extra layers the EOS M brings.

I have had an EOS-M for years. Never used it mutch....I'm a photographer. Don't do much video. Love my DSLR's and viewfinders and....yes. But now I have suddenly bougth an external mic, a couple og LED panels and....let's try this tiny thing out. :) I actually love it. :)
Magic Lantern is one of my To Do Projects. I remember getting a Canon 5D mk ii which at the time was a pretty advanced camera that was recommended by the ML community. Not sure if things have been updated, but if a Canon EOS M is too limiting check out the 5D.
Maybe I missed something, but the autofocus on the 15-45 doesn’t seem to work, wether in photo or video mode. Have I left something out? I mainly shoot with the 7artisans 25mm1.8, but just picked up the 15-45 for image stabilisation, reach, and…autofocus. I’m not looking for constant AF in video, but simply a half-shutter focus set, since eyeballing it on the screen is hard. Any ideas? 🥲

If bought my EOS M end of 2017 as a cheaper alternative to the original BMPCC. I rigged it out and did a lot of stuff with it.
After the Pocket 4K released I’ve ordered one and used the EOS M primary for Photography.
Just a few weeks ago I upgraded to the EOS M50 II for Photo which is a substantial upgrade.
I’ve given my M to my mother but this little camera will always have a special place in my heart.
I often had it in my case when I was on a shoot, because there were always people who wanted to get into video but were afraid of the cost. Then I always pulled out the little EOS M and showed them how cheap it was to get a great camera.
My biggest complaints about the EOS M were the bad HDMI out and in hindsight, in comparison to the M50 the bad battery life. (Didn’t bother me for video since I used a dummy battery)

Excellent and informative video!!
The EOS M was released October 2012. It was about $900 USD with the EF-M 18-55. A little less with the 22mm f2 pancake. The hybrid on sensor AF was sluggish and not refined or ready for release. The review sites trashed it over that and the high price. They overlooked the excellent image quality (for the day) and it's magnesium alloy pro build body. Canon cut the price by about 60% and sold them off. I bought mine July 2013 for $350 USD. Got the 22mm f2 right after for $100 USD and then the EF to EF-M for $40 USD new. Fire sale prices. You Can't get OEM for those anymore new or used. A couple of FW upgrades helped the AF quite a bit. I found holding the camera at a slight angle helped the AF even more. I'm primarily a stills shooter but this applies to video too. Not that you would want to tilt the camera to get it to AF when shooting video.. LOL! I'm sure you film folks shoot with manual focus. ;-)
I think the hybid AF, which preceded duel pixel, looks for vertical lines to lock on. Comparing that to DSLR AF sensors. In their lower lines, Canon used cross type AF sensors in the center and horizontal sensors (for vertical lines) for all others locations in the AF point matrix. Higher end cameras had all cross type AF points, more AF points and duel cross in the center. Think a + and X over each other for the center sensor. From what I think I know, the newer second generation DPAF detects horizontal and vertical lines. The ability for phase detect to look at both horizontal and vertical lines makes the AF faster and more accurate. Gives it the ability to find focus where just a horizontal sensor wouldn't. That would impact DPAF the same way.
Anyways, Canon pulled the M line for the North American market for about 3 years and returned with the M3 well after it had been out everywhere else. The original M was considered to be a mirrorless Rebel T4i. It has more in common with the 60D than the 70D. I think it's the perfect street photography camera. Especially with the 22mm. It's also my favorite to use on a gimble when I do shoot video. I hope this info helps.

I have formatted a 128g sd card with a speed of 200mb/s on my mac version Monterrey 12.2.1 in MS-DOS (FAT), then I have formatted the card in the camera I have copied the three files on the card and the firmware of the camera is 2.0.2 which I think is the correct one to install ML, it tries but it tells me:

Please copy all ML files. Firmware 0

RAM_EXE -1
Update-1
I have also downloaded new files on Dann's page, but everything remains the same.

It's a great all around camera, but you have to run ML and shoot RAW video to access 10/12 bit color. Hope that helps!

Great video! I have two of those in my cupboard. I tried ML about 10 years ago and it was not stable and had freezing problem with certain lenses. Time to blow dust off my EOS M.

Yes, you have. The Eos M is a MILC, so it doesn't have any lenses on it by default. If you are on a budget, you can easily buy some M42 mount lens (Pentacon 29 2.8, Helios 44-2, etc), and the cheaper ones are less than 30$. I bought my Helios for like 10$

I think the next best option for RAW 1080p video would be the original blackmagic pocket cinema camera. It's more expensive than the Canon EOS M, but you might be able to find it easier. Hope this helps!

Hi all, I have this camera, I purchased it in 2012 or 2013 when it was out new! I was looking into upgrading to a new camera to shoot video but now I've stumbled down this magic lantern rabbit hole and am reconsidering a need for a new budget film camera.
I'm no film or camera expert, so some of this seems a little daunting. The reason I'm intersted in upgrading is primarily because I find the EOS M cannot shoot in any low light situations without a ton of grain, making my footage worthless.
Would somebody with some more knowledge help me out? Am I better off getting a new budget film camera, or should I keep what I've got? If I keep it, how can I best shoot in low light situations?
Hi! Sorry for my late response on this! I would consider holding onto the EOS M and trying a couple things that might help with getting better lowlight video. I would make sure you're not shooting with anything slower than f2.8, maybe even f2. This will help you get the most light in the sensor. If you have the budget I would recommend the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, it's great in lowlight and one of my go to lenses for lowlight. Another option to get more light is invest in a viltrox speedbooster. This will allow you to adapt Canon EF glass and provide you with another stop of light, which can help a ton. Another tip, Don't be afraid to bump your ISO in some of those low light situations. ISO 200,400, and 800 I've found are all useable and can even be fairly well cleaned up in the edit with a bit of noise reduction.
If you're looking to do a lot of regular filming in lowlight, I would recommend looking at some of Sony's cameras particularly their full frame cameras, because they do extremely well in lowlight.

Definitely a new lens with a lower F stop helped a lot shooting in low light. I ended up getting a 7artisans 25mm F1.8 used at a local camera store for under $80 CAD.

Nope... highest frame rate with Magic Lantern is about 40fps... just about enough to get a bit of a dreamy motion effect when played back at 24.

I used a combo of lenses throughout those shots. Canon 22mm, Canon 15-45mm, 7 Artisans 25mm, Sigma 18-35mm.

I honestly don't get it. I've tried magic lantern before briefly and looked at other videos about it. The image quality is just meh 🤷♂️. Obviously at $250 or for me free because I happen to have the eos m, it's better than everything in that price class, but like this camera's competition isn't cinema cameras, it's basically any interchangeable lens camera that shoots 4k 10- bit log. And the workflow is so arduous that unless you're a very specific person without other options the time you waste with the camera will not be worth it at all.
All your footage looks purple tinted
I damaged my back a decade ago. So the DSLR and full frame lenses have sat in their bags since then. However, the Canon EOS-M was being sold off for just £200 brand new at that same time.
So I bought three, one for throwing about, one for macro and a spare. I guess I now have a use for the spare. Who would have thought it, all those years ago.
It almost seems a pity to open up its box after all this time. There can't be much new stock of this in the world now.
