I dated a guy for 2 years, unknowing that his true love was out of state at college... when she graduated, he broke up with me during the time this song was out. Of course, I didn't know about her.. brings back memories.
Hey Tina, so sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thats horrible, I'm sorry that you went through that! Awesome that you persevered!
I FEEL FOR Y RITE BUT I'M CHECKING OUT HOMES OK I WOULD'VE CRACKED UP BY NOW ESPECIALLY WHEN DA HORNS CAME IN SHI..... hR DID WIPE HID EYE YESH BIG UP BLESS UP YOUR SELF SISTA
🥺
This music was when people loved to play and write good songs with meaning. Miss these days
Imagine being that third wheel he talks about and how much it sucks. I've been there. Nothing can be said or done to win them back either
I agree. As a teenager in the mid "70's", every single song Shawn and Mel have reacted to in the past week since I discovered Them...is one of those 45's I listened to during every unrequited love I ever crushed on...until I met my husband. I always loved the songs which tell a story. Those were and still are my favorites.
God. Me 2.
This reminds me of the song “ kiss and say goodbye “ By the Manhattans. Not the same genre, but definitely a beautiful, soulful song. Love to see you guys react to it.
Yes! and Its Brillant
Let's Not Forget Their Hit "Shining Star"
Yes
Yess Yess
Brings me back to my youth. Very sad beautiful vocals.
Yes it Does remember I would sing this with ny mom. RiP mom
This is one of my old school jams and it’s on my playlist. Y’all gotta listen to ‘Sexy Eyes’ & ‘When your in love with a beautiful woman’ by Dr. Hook! Same genre around the same time. More old school Jamz. 👍🏽
@Jersey Strong I have both Dr. Hook songs in my playlist. Sweet. 👍
70s and 80s were the best eras for music, hands down!
It’s funny how you hear the lyrics differently as an adult! This came out during my high school years in the 70’s; and I’ve heard this song hundreds of times; yet I feel like I’m hearing the story for the very first time tonight!
The long lost bee gee…be honest ,he would fit right in with those young lads…the bee gees….
That would was freaking amazing!!! Can't beat the seventies. 😊❤😊
70's are the best - Dream Weaver by Gary Wright ♥️
Man this takes me back to my youth. They had this on repeat at the roller rink in the late 1970s.
"Look, my Wife is getting out of Jail so you need to go or we BOTH gonna get it."
😂😂😂
I was 17 going on 18 and graduating from high school when this came out.
Cool fact, had a song hit the charts when he was 12 in 1958 "White Bucks and Saddle Shoes", The Lion Sleeps Tonight was really his only other hit.
Wow I haven't heard this song in so long!! Loving it!!
We sure had a lot of sappy love songs back in the 70s too!
I love his voice 😍
Robert John's falsetto voice is terrific!
This was a fabulous sad song for all the breaks ups out there
This song was released in 1979. At that time I was in eighth grader in middle school. Kids back then didn’t listen to the lyrics as much as we listen to the tone and the sound. I was a little girl crying over this song all the time. I saw a different meaning than what it was meant to be. So the guy was talking about having an affair. That’s wrong and I get it, but it’s a beautiful song and I love the music.
Nowadays a guy like Robert John would have no hope of being in the music industry. He looks like a normal Joe walking down the street but his voice was amazing. The people who have the looks but need autotune to even sound decent dominate the industry today. There are some people who have both looks and the voice of course but not so many.
Love it! Brought back so many memories from roller skating back in the day, this was always the last song of the night.
Nothing beats the 70s music
I was in Jr High when this song came out and hearing it again brings back memories at the roller rink.
Yes! A lot of slow dancing to this song at basement parties in Jr. High. What memories ❤️
Roller skaing and holding hands to this song...anyone?
Would have had to have a boyfriend when this came out first....lol.
Yes! Great memories!!
I’m in. When & where?
When I was a teen & 20s I renounced this sort of song. Now that I'm almost 50 I can't get enough of the smooth 70s
Great song and sung so beautifully!!!!!
Ohhh this goes right back to my childhood… had no idea what the lyrics meant but I still sang it at full volume 😆😂🔥🥰💜
I have this on 45, which means I am ancient. But, I still really like this stupid song.
Lol
This is what I call a 3am song. Hear it on the radio while driving long distances or like when I was teenager in middle and high school, I'd stay over at my best friend's and he slept with the radio on. This song (and some like it) were common on some radio program "Delilah", I think it was. I've always been a light sleeper so I'd end up listening to the radio rather than sleeping. Basically, this song, and others like it, remind me of basically being alone in the dead of night listening to the radio.
YES! Delilah!
This song is so lit! My mom played it on a road trip one time
That guy can FLAT OUT sing...thanks for reviewing...great sad love song
I always thought this was Air Supply, another great 80s band you should check out
Air Supply was the joint. Them Aussies could write some good stuff
If you ever heard the song THE LIONS SLEEP TONIGHT that him singing that when he was around 13 years old
He released a cover of that song in 1971, ten years after The Tokens released their version. He's my mom's age, so that would have made him around 24 or 25 when he recorded it. He was never in The Tokens.
I was a young thing when it came out. About 14-15. Loved this song.
I won my first talent show lip singing this song still have the trophy somewhere 😆
You two rock!!! That song was always on my playlist in HS in the 70's
Beautiful song
Thank you for listening to the music i grew up in the 70's
You ever need a good cry, put this one on.
Very unique voice.
What a voice.
he does a great cover of the lion sleeps tonight
Absolutely loved/love this song 😢❤
Omg, I know this song, didn't know who sang it. Nice reaction guys.
Absolutely amazing 👏 😍 ❤
This song tore my heart in half wen i lost the woman i loved ,i stopped listening to this song and stopped playing it at parties, painfull memories back then
Loved you guys reaction to those final notes
Another great song with this sound s Robbie Dupree "Steal Away" I recommend 👌
Gr8 reaction. Love the song 🎵. Thx for sharing ♥.
I'm aging myself here, but, this was my favorite song at 10 years old. Nostalgia!
Great song 🎵 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
Great lyrics sad song 😂😂😂 another great song back in the days. 💜💚💙💜💚💙💜💚💙
Highly underrated this guy. Still loved though by many of us New Zealanders especially Maori. Great drinking song🍻🍺🍻👏🔥💯👍
I just lost my mom Dec 2nd. Its been a very hard struggle dealing with the loss. My mom made me and my brother. Make a promise when I was 6 and he was 3. We have lived by that promise our entire life. I'm now 50 and he is 47. Our mom played He aint heavy his by brother. Could you please do a reaction video on that song. Our loss is putting great strain on that promise. I guess its due to we both are dealing with it. In very different ways. We don't know how to comfort one another due to our differences in dealing. God bless and thank you.
AWESOME VOICE YES THE 70'S YES.
You're right about the seventies.. simply magical time.
This song was a Hit.
Something about him reminds me of Barry Gibb, his voice definitely but something more.
Frequent song at the roller skating rink back in the day. For those in the know, circle waltz, couples only skate.
EDIT. Being young I didn't know it was about cheating. Didn't click until adulthood.
I want to hear his voice talking. It's so high.
I remember this song from back in the day, 1979. We were free then!
For another sad song listen to Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks...
Robert John, insane vocals man.
Ooh. I found y’all now! Keep bringing back my memories!

Skating rink song! Couples skate- great times with your crush- 💃👍✌️
What a heart wrencher.
Most brutal break-up song of all times!! Robert John said “IT’S OVER!! Baby girl on her way!!!” 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
MEL! Your voice is stunning!
I love y'alls reactions. I was 9 years old when this came out. Good times. Good music.
🫶
i probably listened to this after breaking up with a million babes back in the day!
Great lyrics good music 😊
Great reaction!!! Great song!!!
that happen to me in 1979 that song hit home
Your correct I was a teenager great music
Robert John also did a remake of, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, when he was w/, The Tokens, I believe.
Powerful song!
Love that song ❤❤❤
The best-sung most arrogant song ever. As we used to say down in the country, "Boy thinks a lot of his self." But it's some pretty music.
Another interesting song Robert John did in 1972 was the remake of The Lion sleeps tonight.
Excellent song
My heart ❤was broken my love died I played this song over.
Why not tonight oh I lost it
we grew up listening to every type of music gave us all a better appreciation of people and their talent.
This was always the last song they played at the skating rink before closing. Memories
You should listen to Ruby Jean and Billie Lee by Seals and Crofts, beautiful !
Robert John said he wrote this about a close friend that was in this situation. Robert said this during a live interview.
His high singing voice reminds me the the awesome, outstanding, extremely talented Mitch Grassi of The Pentatonix. I'm a bit partial to Mitch, Mitch's tone is mesmerizing. I don't know much about Robert John, not sure I have heard him sing anything before or after this.
TRUST ME On This One My Music Lovin Brother & Sister,, It's Time To Get FUNKY With This Classic,, BOZ SCAGGS "LOWDOWN" (OFFICIAL AUDIO)
I’m 69 and this song will always be a classic I remember when this song dominated the air waves….everyone sang this song…it will always be number one.
You guys are the cutest 😊
A song about adultery, but a beautiful song nonetheless.
Omg! I have heard this 4272 times and not once knew it was about this. I’m a moron!
Back when people had talent!
The thing about the 70's is that the bar was raised so high, set by the Beatles when they peaked at the end of the 60's with their final album in 1970..So everyone had to be on their A-Game. So you got the best music out of that era, period.
What a voice ❤️🔥. You both look fantastic in the blue/white & blue colour combo ☮️
Wow, I said all that follows BEFORE the song ended, and you two came through for us and explained it perfectly. I will leave my comments, just in case it helps others to understand ... UPDATE : I just tracked down an interview with Robert John, and he said that when he started writing the song, he realized that he WAS writing about a friend of his who was going through this very situation at the time.
There's more than 1 way to look at this, and many reasons for what he's saying. He never said the "she" was his wife, girlfriend, and what. It SEEMS like that's what he's implying but, he could have meant a LOT of things, and a lot of songs fail to explain themselves fully. So, we have to stop assuming facts NOT presented in evidence. Please read on for MY story ...
I had an experience exactly like this in my twenties, when I was in an on-again/off-again relationship with a beautiful, but just as stubborn as I am, girl named Susan. I loved her very deeply but we would fight a lot, and 1 day, one of the two of us broke it off. I remember feeling at the time, that the relationship would never recover. Even though I was still sad about the break up, I tried to move on. I made a mistake and allowed another girl, Cathy, who had been aggressively pursuing me, to win me over 1 day. What can I say ... I was weak, but I DID tell her I wasn't sure about Susan, my previous girlfriend, but she insisted she was fine with it. I assume that she thought she would win me over completely, and it would never come up as a problem. This was NOT the case.
Susan came back, just as aggressive, wanting to "fight for her man", I guess. I was honest with them both, and eventually I had to tell the new girl the bad news, just like in this song. It devastated me to have to tell her, and she cried horribly. It was like a knife in my chest. I KNEW that I was still taking a chance that Susan and I would break up again, but I HAD to give her the benefit of the doubt. I hoped the new girl would understand. She didn't.
Even worse, Susan and I DID eventually break up for good, just a little further down the road. I tried to go back and tell the new girl that it was over for good, and that now, I could devote all my attention AND affection to her, but she wouldn't even hear of it. She wouldn't even speak to me ... not a single word. So much for trying to do the right thing. So basically, I struck out in 3 different ways, but this song DOES describe exactly how I felt. At the time, I was SURE that Cathy was the right one, but felt I had to give Susan that chance. In hind sight, I think I made the wrong decision, because I lost both. It still haunts me to this day.
The trifecta: 1), being a good man 2), being chivalrous and 3), showing bravery and honesty, is often a lonely thing to bear, and a heavy burden to carry. You might also Imagine this happening in a situation with a married couple who "separate", then 1 or both of them begin to have relationships, and then, they both decide they want/need to get back together. They're both going to have to have this very same talk with their new partners. It's just a horrible situation, all around, but Robert John describes the feelings that a person in the middle feels, perfectly.
Yes you did correct with telling the 2nd girl instead of cheating on her. Kudos! BUT going back to the 2nd girl after was an AH move.
@@loriwishman1866 Well, you're entitled to your opinion, and I did mention that it was a MISTAKE (not staying with her in the 1st place), but it was NOT an AH move to try rekindling the relationship, IMHO.
I'd done the honorable thing and took my chances. It just didn't work out, that's all. However, I appreciate your AH opinion ... but there really wasn't a "good" way out of it ... there was just "a way".
Yes, it was.
@@dog8myhmwk FAQ very much, ewe insensitive prick !!! Just sayin' ...
Listen to Please Don't Go by KC and the Sunshine Band.
Great song
Howdy yall just dropping in to watch a reaction. Love to yall both
time machine for me, missing my younger days, meaningful music rarely exist now
I know he had other songs as well but this is a MAJOR one hit wonder and that is not a slight.
It took the longest to go to Number One (18 Weeks). He also did another Song called "Hey There Lonely Girl" which was a Cover of Dionne Warwick's "Hey There Lonely Boy". From the 1960's to the 1990's there were alot of One HIt Wonders.
