I was a mere 11 year old when this came out in 1979. I loved it when I first heard it and it's still a great song 43 years later. The 70's was a great time to grow up with all this great music. In my opinion, the best decade for music... Great choice Angela....

This song has power, heart, soul. They don't make any music like this any more. If I had a time machine I'd go back to the 70's and blow up the time machine so I'd be stuck there because it was a better place and time.

I wouldn't really say mistress. I interpret it as the one he truly loves left him, so he got with another to fill the void. Then later, as his true love decided that she actually wanted to be with him, he had no choice but to part with the woman who filled the void and go back to his true love.
Agree, it's a sad song but so beautifully sung. Always dug his voice. One of the greatest songs ever for me I'm listening to music over 60 years, good compliment!
I heard him in an interview about the source of the song. A friend of his was married and the marriage broke up because one of them took off with someone outside the marriage. He got inspired to write sad eyes and realized it was related to the situation but, "the other side of it."
Don't underestimate the power of when and where you hear these songs. There are a lot of songs that are or become better/great when driving home in the dark. When I see these reactions I often think of the poster of the guy sitting in a chair in front of speakers with a scarf standing straight out behind him. Turn out the lights and turn up the volume.
You notice they used the fadeout massively in the 70s. This song is strong nostalgia, but while the music and singing are wonderful, the lyrics, 'she's coming home today", makes me think he had a fling while his wife was out of town.
That's exactly what it is. This song was huge when I was in high school. You wouldn't believe the number of people who had no idea that's what the song was about. Even though they sang all the words. Some of my friends even got angry with me for telling them. They said I ruined the song for them. 🤣🤣
Such an emotive musical experience about a dude breaking it to his side piece that she's got to hit the road cuz his main squeeze is back in the picture.

Hi, Angela. Thanks for your honest reaction to 'Sad Eyes'. In my younger days I liked the song too, just not the subject matter. Great song. Soaring vocals at the end. But "it's over" because "she's coming home today". So it's a song about cheating on your wife. "I never used you...". Yes, actually you did. But a great song anyway, joining other great songs sung by a cheater such as: Me And Mrs. Jones, Behind Closed Doors, Careless Whisper, Saving All My Love For You, I'm No Good, etc.
I thought (when we get) behind closed doors was about his wife. Maybe it’s a different song than what you are referring to. Another cheating song is Secret Lovers by Peaches and Herb. And of course the Pina Colada song.

This song is about a man's infidelity against his wife with his mistress. About ending a relationship he has had with his mistress while his wife was away but has now returned from where she was. Maybe he watched (Same time same place Next Year) and decided to write a song about the characters in the movie. Anyway Great vocals, Ballsy song if it's a tell all.
You want a sad break-up song, listen to James Ingram, No Easy Way. Not sure why it hits me right between the heart every time I hear it. And this is coming from a rocker, by the way.
Why is it that no one ever seems to mention what kind self-absorbed jerk this guy was...and to say "i didnt use you" when that's exactly what he did, makes no sense to me. And for some reason people just seem to be so dismissive about him cheating while his girl was away? Well a lot of guys out there are single and have been for a long time and so cannot even relate to this song, but of course her really short reactions would never have time to address any of these kind of things. Either way i know this kind of thing is pretty normal within the music industry where you've got all these airhead "groupies" following the bands around so i guess eventually its bound to happen? And i guess a lot of people are willing to overlook cheating on them because they might do the same thing if they had the chance??
Well hell...I haven't heard this song since the...well since the 70's. Nothing like bringing back old memories. At least you're honest and not trying to please your fans, I like that. If you haven't yet, try Ambrosia - How Much I Feel, Loggins and Messina - Angry Eyes, or the Little River Band--It's A Long Way There. They had a few good songs back when. By the way, for the most part, I "hate" rap. LOL...and 15yrs from now, you and many others from your generation will probably find yourself sitting in some comfortable chair drinking a nice hot chocolate, tea, or some other favorite beverage, looking out the window of your home watching the rain or snow fall outside, reflecting, and saying, "I can't believe we were actually into this stuff." I've my own collection of hits from the good old days and they've been sitting in a chest since, exactly where they belong.
"Sad Eyes” is a ballad that lays out a tough romantic situation as economically as possible. Robert John’s narrator is a guy who’s been having an affair, but he’s decided that he’s going back with his ex, or his ex has decided that she’s coming back to him.
