JS quote: "Years ago, Ridley Scott changed Blade Runner. He decided to change an ambiguous aspect of the central character to something not ambiguous at all. The movie that Blade Runner fans fell in love with because of that central uncertainty lost something because the author simply changed his mind years after the fact. I think that authors of content should leave the interpretive aspects of their narrative work alone once it goes out into the world for consumption. I think we should discuss it, argue about it, but we shouldn't try to re-frame it. It shouldn't really matter whether what's there is intentional or accidental. It's what's in the game and what the player experiences that matter."
Certainly something to think about. We don't need a definitive answer to everything.

"Watcha" meaning "what you" makes sense to me from what others have said in the comments. As you said kale is kill as we've deduced from another phrase. Conserva shares a root word with conservation so that would probably mean "to keep". Nei I think is a negative similar to no. "Oh" still confuses me but with the rest put together you get "kill what you no keep" or to make it make better sense "kill what you don't keep". Basically an f you to Salt-Upon-Wounds considering his whole shtick was to salt the earth killing everything he didn't keep.

Its tragic in a way that he has to turn himself into a monster to save his home from a monster and I allways thought honest hearts did a pretty good job of portraying that.

I probably am not right since the sentence doesn't make so much sense, but it could be "kill what you don't keep" if "kale" is kill, and "watcha" is taken as derivative of "what you" and nei is "no" or in this case maybe it's "don't" and "conserva" being sinonimous with keepin, caring or conserving. So it might be a point about killing the white legs because they couldn't be redeemed or saved from their ways by Joshua and Daniel, and became a big risk, hence, having to be exterminated

But I believe it could also be “As god as my witness” (Kale Watcha) “none of you will be spared” (Nei Conserva Oh). With Kale being a bastardization of Karl, olde word associated with kings and lords, which in turn could be take as Lord almighty, as in god. Just my two cents that I’ve been able to scrounge up after years of adoring this game.

This is also a way for Graham to come to terms with himself that he must because an irredeemable monster to his very friends and those he's come to love a trust, in order to protect them. That's why persuading him otherwise is so hard, he's already made up his mind. Everything he did was to lead to that moment and now we are asking him to abandon his quest to protect his people at the last possible second, at the most critical time of his entire operation.

But given the context of what is going on with the white legs and Josuha as a religious man, wouldn't this more likely be:
    "Kill what you can't save"
A minor difference, but sounds more in line with Joshua?

  • @Cheyne_TetraMFG
    @Cheyne_TetraMFG Рік тому +10

Seeing “Kill what you can’t [conserve/preserve/save]” and fwiw there’s a Margaret Atwood poem called November, and it goes:
    “Kill what you can’t save
what you can’t eat throw out
what you can’t throw out bury
What you can’t bury give away
what you can’t give away you must carry with you,
it is always heavier than you thought.”
It may not be related exactly but that certainly seems thematically relevant. So take it for what it’s worth.
    Edit:
    Something else occurred to me.
It’s a poem on the surface about killing a sheep for the winter. And the line Joshua Graham says before this is something like “the only use for an animal in the temple of God is for sacrifice.”
But over on the No Mutants Allowed forum, they’re convinced it’s something like “As God is my witness, none of you will be spared.” (Spared ≈ saved/conserved; Kale as a cognate of Karl or Lord; watcha = watch(es), etc)
Idk they make a more compelling case for it over there, but I’m not 100% convinced. Either way the themes of God (the Lord is my shepherd), saving or conserving (or not saving, that is), I think there’s just a missing piece to connect it. It’s a great mystery.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there *is* no real meaning, and that the writer(s) simply made something up to give attentive players something to contemplate after they had finished the DLC. It's not like it really matters anyway. The expansion ends immediately afterward, and none of the characters or events are referenced thereafter. To me, it seems like Josh Sawyer just wanted his very own mystery box in the game, J. J. Abrams style.

“God watches, (but/and) will not save you” seems like a likely translation. Only issue is how Kale means God. Could be the hindu kali, but none of the White Legs are that kind of indian, and I doubt Joshua, knowing their language, could invoke a pagan diety if that was its meaning. Apeq seems to be the Shoshone word for God, so Kale might not be a direct translation for God, maybe something like “Great Spirit” or “The Almighty”

Yeah I honestly think this interpretation could make a lot of sense just because we know kale means kill already and conserva obviously shares the root word with conservation so I figured that was keep myself as well. The other bits confused me but "watcha" translating into "what you" fits with the whole convention of the language, the other bits I can see as being some type of conjugation, though nei could also be like no. So maybe it could be "kill what you no keep" or "kill what you don't keep" to make more sense. Considering the circumstances in which it is said as well as it fitting perfectly as a cool one liner to say before killing someone who literally salts the earth killing everything he doesn't keep, I'd say this is a very fair translation as well.

Kinda looks and sounds like, "Can't Watch Now, Converse Later". That kinda makes sense to me with a character like Joshua, he's one to take action and then explain said actions at a calmer time. Ergo, after he kills Salt-Upon-Wounds he (depending on your karma and choice's you've made up to this point) either justifies why he did what he did or condemns his and your own actions.
