  • @tmnichols3
    @tmnichols3 5 років тому +1

    I agree - if you have an ick outbreak it is best to remove all fish into QT / dosing tanks for 6 weeks and then you can place them back into the main display. After you do this it will really motivate you to use a QT tank to introduce new fish - so that you don't have to repeat that process for the fish in your main tank. Also, good advise on having a separate fishless coral QT tank - although that is a bit more expensive due to lighting and flow requirements.

    Hey. Can I use the water on my DT for setting up the QT and then dose it with cupramine before adding a fish so that I don’t need to wait to cycle the water and there will be presence of beneficial bacteria on it. Should I removed the carbon on the power filter when dosing the cupramine? Thanks! Great videos and very educational for new reef hobbyists.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому

      yes to everything you said but you also need something in the qt that has been in your DT. something that will have bacteria on it. just using water is not enough. if you don't do this, you will need to do water changes daily to keep ammonia out.

    Just got my 10 Gallon Quarantine tank set up. I'm treating my Brown Powder Tang. I have had bad luck with these guys. Local Fish Store told me they treat their new supply with copper upon arriving at the store, no need to treat once I get it home. The fish looked great at the store but the next day signs of Ich. Hoping for the best.

    • @ROTTERtube

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому +1

      you'll be fine. dose half the recommended amount of cupramine and keep them in there for 6 weeks...in the QT. put a rock or something from your DT in the QT for bacteria so the ammonia from their urine will not kill them. do not ever put that rock in the DT again since it will have copper in it.

    For velvet, I do a fresh water dip (RODI) for no more than 5 min. Because it’s velvet and very aggressive, I do full concentration for .5. Not sure where you got one drop per gallon unless your using it to acclimate the fish to copper treatment (which I recommend for ich). Copermine will only work at .5 (no less, no more). That’s about 4 drops per gallon

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  4 роки тому +2

      1 drop per gallon is more than enough. the instructions on the bottle are too close to toxic levels for fish. this has been documented.

    Hello. First, let me say thank you for your videos! Very helpful info! I have 3 questions for you. (1) Is it OK to dose my QT with Cupramine before I add the first fish? (2) Once the 6 weeks is over, do the water changes eliminate the copper completely, before placing fish back to DT? If no, how do I remove the copper and safely move the fish back to DT with no copper present? I have corals and CUC in DT. (3) What would I feed my Lawn Mower Blenny while he’s in QT? He only eats the algae from my rocks. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  3 роки тому +1

      hi kim, great job on the QT! this will be easy for you. 1. yes, you can add cupramine before adding the fish no problem. 2. just acclimate the fish from the QT in a bowl of water from your DT. whatever small bit of copper is on your fish will do nothing, if there is anything after the swim in the bowl of DT water. you can put a small rock or any rock from your tank in your QT. that rock will have copper on it so I wouldn't put it back in again....just buy a new dry rock from the store to replace it.

    Hey. Nice video. I have a 68 gallon fiah only tank with a small sump and live rock. I'm guessing about 70 gallons of water. Estimate. I dosed 70 drops 48 hours ago. I'm waiting on a better copper test kit. You say you dose every 48 hours. Wont the copper levels build up to toxic levels? Or did I misunderstand? Wondering if I should do another 70 drops today.

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  4 роки тому +2

      follow the instructions on the bottle but my recommendation is to dose half the does. cut it in half. the reason is, what they say to dose is too close to toxic levels. if you dose too much your fish can die. also, there is no test that can properly test for copper. way too hard to read. all over the web people say it's too hard to test. i tried test kits. can't read anything....good luck

    Hi Steve and thank you for your reply.Can you give me an advise for the issue I'm having: after strange behaviour of my emperor angelfish ,I moved all the inhabitants in the QT for a Cupramine treatment at .25 ppm.After 10 days of great recovery, there's another issue arising: the emperor shows lesions on the head and lateral line...hole in the head disease? As a former discus lover and keeper I know that this is caused mainly by Hexamita,but now I'm unsure.Can the copper treatment be causing it? Can I slowly reduce the Cupramine dosing?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  3 роки тому

    Came across your channel, just wish to Express to you know I appreciate the informed information on how to dose cupermine. In college(25yrs ago😁), I dont recall having to setup QT. Obviously, times, have changed. Set up mt 20 QT, had 3 blue-green chromis, and within 3 weeks, all died. At the time, couldn't understand what was happening(water parameters were great, no sign of fighting among the fish), until I noticed on the last chromis that died, it had, what looked to be a single red mark toward rear of the body. That's when I became educated about Urenoma. This seemed to be prevalent among the damsel/clown fish. Fortunately, my firefish, chalk bass and neon goby are doing well.

      you never use copper in a coral QT tank. you only use copper for your fish only QT tank. 2 weeks may work but i would go at least 5 to make sure the parasites are dead in that QT water from the reef store. not worth the risk. dipping doesn't kill all parasites or marine velvet.

    you talk is about Cupramine. Malachite green can’t kill
    ich? it’s much better and less
    toxic

    Good rule is nothing wet meaning rock, sand, coral, invert, or fish goes in the display tank without being quarantined. If you don't quarantine you're basically playing Russian Roulette with you tank. I've been in this hobby since 1999 and learned my lesson after the first ich outbreak. I used the tank transfer method and left my display fishless for 87 days.

  • @eldany58

    You said 1 drop of cupramine per gallon towards the end. That's incorrect. Initially you stated that it was recommend to at 20 drops per gallon. So adding the half of the dose would be 10 per gallon. 1 drop per gallon would not reach the necessary therapeutic level. Double check, just in case I'm wrong or I didn't get your info straight, I do follow you and like your videos.

      Hey Daniel, i said SEACHEM SAYS TO DOSE 20 DROPS PER GALLON BUT I DOSE 1 DROP PER GALLON. I dose half the recommended amount and it works great every time for the tanks i have worked on. dosing what seachem recommends is way to close to toxic levels and will kill fish if dosed improperly.

      Rotter Tube Reef
      Just a simple math clarification: Seachem directions is 20 drops for 10.5 gal or 2 drops per gallon. Half dosage would be 1 drop per gallon. You are still correct. I enjoy watching ur vid. Thanks for sharing and educating reefers.

      Hi Jose, 6 weeks. I dosed, then again after 48 hours, then did 50% water change after 2 days. then dosed, then dosed again after 48 hours, then 50% water change after that.....then dosed once a week, doing a water change of 50% at the end of each week. did this for 6 weeks.

    What salt water do you use sir? Fresh salt water or syntetic salt water? If we use fresh salt water, do you think we can infect the main tank with the ich?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому

      Hi Ami, I make my own saltwater. People have used fresh saltwater. I would imagine there could be a risk in bringing not only a parasite in, but pollutants.

      Rotter Tube Reef how many percent we should water change in QT?

    • @ROTTERtube
      @ROTTERtube  5 років тому +2

      at least 50% or put a rock in the QT from your main tank.....so you have the biological filtration to keep ammonia out. you can never put that rock in your main tank again though because it will have cupramine / copper in it.

    Good info! I didn't QT and got ich on a Powder Blue. I did what should have been done in the first place and QT'd all my fish and treated them with copper. Left my display tank without fish for 6 weeks. That was 4 years ago and ich hasn't returned. What a pain that was and I'll never allow an outsider in my display tank until they've proven themselves worthy. Tons of people telling me to feed garlic and that the fish could fight off the ich. Maybe in some cases that could happen but I wanted it out of my tank. This hobby already has enough lessons to learn so save yourself and your fish this one!
