If the definition of reactionary is "person opposed to political or social change", then yes, somebody with the opinion "i see that progress, and i don't want it to happen because progress bad", that's a reactionary.
HOWEVER somebody who says "i see what you are calling 'progress', but that looks like it's regressive to me. I think progress is this OTHER path forward", are THEY a reactionary? They still believe in progress, they just don't believe in YOUR view of what progress is.
Or is literally just that you think you have the perfect knowledge, the perfect politics, you know the OnE tRuE wAy like every other zealot? And therefore, every person who disagrees with you is a heretic, er, a 'reactionary'?

@@Jay-qu2bc Sure, but the left-wing right now opposed political and social liberalization. It is not a liberal idea to balkanize populations into racial groups and then demand privileges be given based on the colour of your skin, whether that comes in the form of white supremacy or black reparations. The liberal idea has always been colourblindness, and the "progressive left" has actively become regressive and anti-liberal in espousing black collectivism.
And the left doesn't just do this racially. They treat people not as individuals, but as avatars of their race/gender/class/sexuality/whatever, form them up into neat little groups, and determine whether they are oppressive or not. It's ANTI-LIBERAL, man. It's not progress at all.
When I think "progress", I think of a world where demographic characteristics do not matter AT ALL, only a person's behaviour. People are judged for what they do, not for what their ancestors did. People are left alone to just live their lives without some socialist commissar telling them to go work on the collective farm because they're part of an oppressor class or some shit. Individuals are allowed to be successful, or not, based on their talents and skills and how hard they work.
We're obviously not living in that world. But the ideas that breadtubers spout off will take us further away from that world if implemented, making them anti-liberal, reactionary, regressive, and dangerous if given political power. Free people have a moral obligation to oppose both fascism and marxism.

I thought being alt-right was based more on actions since Paleo-conservatives, Libertarians, Catholic Monarchists, and Edgy 4-channers were considered alt-right pre-2016 Election. I also thought that the term originated from regressive/leftists to describe those who aren't Neo-conservatives. This led me to believe that the concept of alt-right is a rejection of the notions of interchangeability.

Everyone reacts to things, even the trend-setters of the world have to react sometimes. It's just what happens inside a causal world. I though Republican and Conservative were interchangeable. My limited interactions with self-identified alt-righters did have ethnocentric underpinnings.
But from my estimation, it wasn't much different than what the Marxists were saying. All that collectivist bullshit of categorizing people through arbitrary means.

either he does not know what a fascist is, or he doesn't care and he uses the term to bludgeon people with. it's like a few videos ago when i said i no longer care about being cancelled anymore because fuck it. i no longer care about being called a 'racist' or a 'fascist' anymore, not because i am those things, but because the moral judgement of people who would throw those terms around is worthless at this point.

If "reactionary" just means wanting to return to a previous state, it's not even a bad thing in many cases, because not all change is progress. If a change is made which has a negative impact, it's generally a sensible idea to undo that change.
If it instead means "resisting change" it's even more clear that it's not always a bad thing.
Generally the type of "return" reactionaries want is to times when others had less rights. That's why being a reactionary is seen as a generally bad thing, dumb ass.

At some point in the last few years the online left discovered this word and decided it was just about esoteric enough to make them feel intellectually superior to regular people who don't "read theory".
No, opposing oppressive revolutionary movements isn't reactionary, that is progress, that is liberty. When the various communist governments all collapsed in the 1990s it was neither due to revolutionary nor reactionary rhetoric but a popular drive towards moderate politics of individual liberty, real democracy (not phoney "single party" democracy) and an independent judiciary.
Generally, reactionary is when the prospect of a revolutionary ideology means even moderate liberty loving ideals are rejected out of paranoia they may be used by revolutionaries. Vaush says the same thing, he says he only supports people's freedoms that don't support politics he considers dangerous.
That would be Japan after WW1, they entered a state of absolute panic over the prospect of a socialist revolution and adopted a militaristic junta of extremist control and depended on perpetual militaristic expansion.
Japan's slide into extremism is a path few care about, people only seem to care about the prospect of what happened in Germany being repeated.
Now there have been some reactionary movements in response to communist revolutionary ideology, but not in Europe in the 1990s, they wanted to go back to the liberty loving democracies they had before WW2... Not return to absolute monarchies and feudalism.
Yes. I want a return of industry and respected blue collar work to the USA, as things were before everything was outsourced because the labor was cheap. In that sense I am a reactionary, even though the world would almost certainly be better off for it.
@@robertallan8035 America still makes things but it makes expensive things like medical devices, aircraft and satellites which have high margins. It doesn't make cheap mass produced consumer goods which have thin margins. FYI china hardly makes things, they assemble things that other places have made, they don't make the microprocessors, they just do the fiddly job of installing them in between a circuit board and a heat sink.
Also the things people value aren't tangible things, it's media like movies, TV shows and music. It's services like doctors, surgeons, nurses, IT experts, chefs.
The days of a country's wealth being only made from items you furnish a house with like pots, pans, crockery, lanterns, brushes doormats, etc just isn't the way to get rich any more. What people highly value are services because the commodities market is oversupplied.

Under the defenition you used Anarchism is reactionary since it was created in 19th centuary and practiced in many countries during 20th Centuary (Catalonia, Basque, Ukraine etc...) As someone who has identifed as "conservative" in my life:
I understand conservatism is very much reactionary by concept. Of course it's not mutually exclusive to the right and not all right-wing affiliates are reactionaries, but it's awfully common among the social conservatives especially.
Left-wing affiliates are not innocent and there's a lot of rethoric that comes around but as I've seen in my left leaning spaces, it's the same stuff I've heard for years from both past politicians, e.g Bernie, and also fellow peers.
I think it's an important term that can be applied accurately, but it's not a label you can just slap on somebody and call it a day.

He will accuse you of being X and then it is your (his opposition's) job to prove that you are not X and if you cannot disprove the allegation, which in all likelihood you cannot, which is intentional on his part, you shall be defined as such by him from then on. If you do successfully counter his accusation, he will continue to label as you as X anyway, making the whole debate utterly worthless.

They have this flawed idea that any change is good, and if you don't like what they are doing by definition you must want to go back to the past. In truth, most "reactionaries UA-camrs" are reformists, and so am I. Not every change is good, but change is necessary. So, you can look at what we have now and try to slowly mold it and adapt it to a new era.
For example, I'm an atheist, and I really don't want to come back to religious social tyranny. However, it seems to me that without religion people turn to politics as a supplement for meanings. The progressives will claim "and that's a good thing", I don't. I rather reform the good parts of religion and leave the rest. I don't have an issue with charity, in fact, I rather people will find meaning through helping their fellow man rather than shouting on the internet.
So, I don't want to go back to the past and I don't want the crazy idea of "progress" the pseudo academics have. I don't even want to have a slow rate of progress, by this point I won't mind seeing people rise up against the leftist tyranny. I want to progress by building upon what was done right in the past and remove what isn't. It's still progress, it's just not destructive progress.

honestly, the term "reactionary" is a bit complicated and historically loaded to be thrown around like this, much like the term fascist. Reactionaries were those who opposed the expansion of French enlightenment ideas in the 18th century, which then became a synonym for all those who opposed change. So, it can be either be interpreted as a radical opposer of enlightenment, which would be a bit outdated, or someone who is very skeptical of change in general. It is also true that it generally used to refer to people who are very old fashioned in their beliefs.
The amount of mental defense people raise to this topic, even now, astounds me.
