    You just made my day!!!!! I just purchased the scoop and was looking at the prices of the carbon fiber handles. Thanks for sharing the best idea in town!!!!!!🙂

    After snapping my crabon fiber shaft, I did exactly this. Picked up the shovel from Harbor Freight for $13 - cut & bolted onto my Scoopal scoop. Used it for the first time this weekend & it worked amazing, thank you for the idea!!

      You're welcome. I'm glad it worked out for you. It's not as light as carbon fiber, but you can't beat the price. I recently made another improvement by slipping off the rubber grip, putting a 4" wooden dowel in the end so I could screw in an eyebolt. Now I can drag my scope, hands free, with a $7 tactical harness I bought from Temu. Saves a lot of wear & tear on my shoulder.

      You're welcome. Depending on how your scoop attaches to the handle, it might be easier to just cut the spade off with an angle grinder; leaving the tempered steel collar as additional reinforcement. The weak point for all scoops (carbon fiber and fiberglass) is the neck where it is attached to the scoop. Re-enforcing that will prolong the life of your scoop. Note: if you need to drill a hole through the tempered steel, you will need a drill bit that can cut through tempered steel. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

    Excellent modification on this handle ! Helped me a lot since I ordered just the Stainless Steel Sand Scoop and a Carbon Fiber Handle is way out of this world expensive ! Thank you !

      Glad it helped! The Carbon Fiber handles are super light but stupid expensive. And I've seen them break just like any other handle. I drag my scoop with a sling so being light isn't as important any more. I'll try and make a video on the sling I created for my scoop. Cheers.

    Thanks for making this video. I bought stainless steel scoop without a handle and the carbon fiber handles are more than I wanted to pay for. I bought a shovel and completed this project. I didn't straighten the reinforced tube but used the curve to add a little more angle forward. Works great. Fun cost saving project. Thanks again for the great money saving idea.

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  8 місяців тому

      Glad I could help. I hate wasting money and find it especially satisfying when I can come with something that works as well, if not better, and costs less. Consider inserting a small piece of wooden dowel inside the handle to reinforce the end. The angle of the scoop can put a lot of stress on it. I found that a small section of closet rod worked perfectly but you'll need to find something that fits inside your handle. I also cut up some pool noodles & stuffed them inside so that the top part of the handle will float if I drop it in the surf. Cheers.

    Thanks for this hack! Put the HF shovel handle on my TRex scoop. Ground off and punched out the pin holding the blade of the shovel and the remaining yellow shaft exactly fit in the TRex socket with no extra play. Hardest part of the project was removing the old wood handle. Thanks again!!

    Hello Mark. Great job on the fiberglass sand scoop. I have the V point SITO SCOOP on a Carbon fiber shaft that's been working pretty well for me, but I wouldn't mind making a back up scoop. Just in case. I'm located down the Southern area of Texas, just off the coast near Corpus Christi, Texas. Keep up the great videos. _/ 👍

      I've done it three times and they work great. Getting the shovel head off is the hardest part. If you save the top of the shovel for added support, use U-bolts to attach the scoop. Drilling a bolt thru is really hard because the shovel is made of tempered steel

    Just an idea
    If you have a drill press buy you fiberglass shovel and just drill 1/2 holes all over it shovel part
    Seem like it would work for the beach
    It would probably get to rusty
    Never mind 😂

      Good idea. I keep trying to come up with easier/cheaper ways to dig in the sand (plastic shovel with holes, sand screen cart, sand sifter) but always end up going back to my sand scoop. Nothing seems to be as efficient as a good sand scoop. So, the more holes I dig, the more treasure I find. I'll keep trying. Let me know if you have any more ideas.

    A tip on the end of the shovel handle, if you have pipe tubing which is not ROUND you can take a LARGE cresent wrench and just keep going round and round with it on the bent or dented pipe or tubing, keep tightening the wrench and it does help make it round or better not perfect but helpful. What was the hole diameter on the scoop you used the handle on.

      Great tip! I love it when you have to "MacGyver" something, and it works. This is my old scoop. I think it has a 1" tube that fits a standard shovel handle. My good scoop uses U bolts to connect the handle, so I had carve a small slot to make the bolts fit. Having an angle grinder helps a lot. Thx for sharing your idea.

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  6 місяців тому

      Thx. That was an older scoop so I ended up drilling a hole to secure the scoop with a bolt. Works fine but drilling thru the tempered steel of the shovel's neck was not easy. Make sure you have the right drill bit if you need to do that.

    Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the video. Did the PVC handle last?

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  Рік тому

      Thanks. So far it's held up great. The pistol grip is so short the PVC doesn't bend like it would if it was longer. Just make sure it's glued well. The nice thing about it is that it's really cheap to replace. As for the shovel handle, I've got the same fiberglass handle on my main scoop & had to replace it after a hard summer of digging. Again, it only cost $10 at Harbor Freight so I got my money's worth. When I replaced it, I just cut off the spade of the shovel leaving the metal neck. That's holding up much better because my main scoop has a u-bolt clamp used to attach the handle instead of a welded tube like the one in the video. It just depends on what type of scoop you have. Good luck.

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  Рік тому

      Oh yeah...the shovel is tempered steel so I went through a couple of drill bits trying to drill through it. Recommend using a high quality drill bit made for that or try to reuse the existing hole if you can.

    Did we just become best friends.... Yup!! lol. I just did the exact same thing with the same scoop (the one with the U Bolts) and same HF shovel.. I went to the beach last week and couldn't get the raptor grip to stop spinning on the fiberglass shaft. Did you run into this? if so, how did you stop it? Its reasonably tight as it is. I don't want to crank down on it because I don't want to crack the fiberglass.

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  Рік тому

      Hey Bestie. I'm pretty sure my raptor handle has a rubber gasket that keeps it from slipping which is why I added one to my PVC grip. If it doesn't, try making one from an old bike innertube , The rubber will keep it in place.

    • @ecks_marks_the_spot
      @ecks_marks_the_spot  Рік тому

      Also, if you are worried about the fiberglass shaft cracking, slip a 6" piece of closet rod inside. I think I used a 1" rod inside mine so I could screw my scoop hook into the handle. I also filled the shaft with pieces of noodle foam I bought at Dollar Tree. That helps the handle float & keeps the wooden dowel in place where I need it.

      Do you mean putting the handle on the bottom? Does that work? I mounted it on top, similar to how metal detectors are designed, so that the scoop handle pushed up against my forearm. I might try reversing it to see how that feels. Thanks.

      @@ecks_marks_the_spot , what you built would work excellently for catching sand fleas for fishing bait. You would lower the blade edge of the scoop and pull toward you, scooping up lots of sand and sand fleas.

      Oh...I get it. For fishing instead of digging up treasure. Great idea. I've seen those sand flea scoops. The metal detecting scoops tilt forward like a shovel because half of the time we just throw the sand out. Not sure I could reverse the angle without breaking the welds but I'll give it some thought. Thanks.

    If you want to make a travel sand scoop handle, take the fiberglass shaft from a Harbor Freight shovel, cut it in half. Sleeve the outside diameter above and below the cut to prevent it from cracking. Glue in a thick walled tube to connect the two halves. A small hole and pin transverse to the line of force can retain the two halves.
    Tks!
