#36 How to make a Sand Scoop for $0, DIY Project

Here I will show you how to make a sand scoop for Beach Metal Detecting for $0 basically, if you have some PVC Pipes laying around?? you can pick up small bits of PVC Pipe in off-cut bin's at hardware stores, for free, or for next to nothing.
The PVC one I show as an example in the video, my wife has been using for about 12 months and it is still going strong.
This scoop is great and is a fraction of the cost of a shop bought one.
Sand Scoop Measurements in millimeters.
Handle
length 1100 mm
Pipe Diameter 35 mm
Angle cut on handle 70 deg
Scoop
Length 230 mm (the bottom longest edge)
Pipe Diameter 110 mm
Angle cut on the scoop 45-50 deg
Holes Drilled 18 mm or just smaller than your smallest coin.

Great project for the occasional beach hunter. Would have made the holes smaller to 13mm as many small bit of jewellery etc could fall through.

+malcolmpotter Hi Malc, the first one that i made, I did have smaller holes but it didn't work very well so I made the holes just smaller than our smallest coin, and you are right, every now and then something does go through, but I have the advantage of owning a metal detector, it doesn't take much practice to realize when something is going through your scoop when shaking the sand out. Pommy-Down-Under (Glyn), I’m 3/4 of my way through my one. I’ve drilled 16mm holes that are staggered. I’ve drilled a coach bolt through. And made up an angled plastic spacer. So there is even tension on the bolt. Through that spacer I can also screw another screw up into the wood. I took your advice and reinforced were the handle is mounted. I’ve decided to use a end cap. Instead of making up the back part. I’ve got just over 45 degrees angle on my pole. From yours it maybe a bit steep. Time will tell. I also made my scoop a little shorter. To reduce tension on the handle in wet sand. I may have to dug twice 😃. I can easily remove the handle from the scoop. So I could make another scoop. It will only cost me the price of the rear cap. I was going to drill 12mm holes but I read one of your posts that your small holes scoop didn’t work that well. Cheers for posting this video. Brent

I’ve just started beach detecting I normally detect inland but we’ve had a lot of snow here in the uk,I didn’t realise how expensive they are too buy so I think I’m going to give your diy one a go,thanks again and good luck hunting ;)
Nothing is cheap these day's hey. Having come from the uk I know most of the detecting your lightly to be doing is in the wet sand on a beach, I'm sure it will be okay for the every now and again in the wet stuff but if your a keen detectorist then save your penny's and get a good one, the wife only uses hers in the dry stuff and occasionally a bit of wet. Great job! I will try to do it, but without The metal bolt, than you can drive you MD coil, over the scoop, to check if I got my target in it!
Such a simple task too, Pommy, well done mate...from a fellow Aussie. I made a smaller one about 30 years ago....it was amazing the things that the kids dropped into their sandpit. My daughter asked me last year could I have the one we used to use when she was a wee lass, for her kids' sandpit. So went searching for it, found it, gave it a spray of paint and it has a new lease of life for another 30 years. It only lasted that long because I kept it in the garage out of the light...not to sure if her eldest daughter[9] will want it when she has her own house...it might have died by then...I did take it on holiday to the beach with us..we found a few small things for a bit of a novelty and it kept the kids busy, my daughter and lad, after they got out of the water...meant the wife and I could just relax, but they were in eyesight of us...doesn't take much psychology to get them to use it...I pretended to use it..."Daaaaaaad, can we play with it, please?????". Was a pleasant time for us two while the kids were occupied...even read about 4 chapters of my book in my beach chair...lol.

Well the scoop is now an heirloom...lol... I might make a new one. I am always making sieves for garden activities..of different grade mesh. Making the little scoop was a necessity for the kids' sandpit...but fun to make.

This is the best thought out diy scoop I've found yet. I already have most of the materials. Thank you for posting this vid, I have saved it to my favorites. I have some muscle atrophy in my left arm and leg that would make most of the sand scoops impossible for me to use, or they don't look very sturdy so i'm very happy to find this :) Happy hunting my friend!

I want to make one. I will make my holes a wee bit smaller though like 1/2" or 12 mm and use an alternatingly pattern. I also question why you didn't use pvc cement rather than the caulking adhesive ?
Great use of cheap materials. I have a suggestion, instead of using silicone try using PVC cleaner then PVC or CPVC solvent cement. If done right the joint will be stronger than the surrounding materiel and will not likely ever fail.GL&HH

Hey Olly, The glue is a PVC cement.You use a cleaner fluid first that cleans and preps the surface ready for the glue, then the cement/Glue, any hardware store or pluming shop will have it, Good-luck.

Hey mate, its fine in dry sand and its still going 3 years on, but if all you do is wet sand? it probably wouldn't last very long. Happy Hunting.
I would reduce the hole size a little as you will loose a lot through 18mm I tink 12mm would be better, Good vid

Drill with drill bit and Hand saw, is all you need, I did a video using only that but deleted it by mistake and couldn't be bothered to do another one :-) Thanks for watching and commenting.

A. That siliconed in triangular support is worthless. Best way to construct a support brace would be a 3d printer.
B. The single screw attachment is going to loosen up and the can will start spinning. Running the handle all the way through the can would be far stronger and put zero pressure on the screw.
C. 16mm holes will keep all rings in the scoop. 18mm they can slip through.
D. Find a way to leave the metal screw out and you can pass the coil over the can. Very useful especially in water.
E. Zig Zagging the holes is more structurally stable than holes in straight lines. It's the way bridge trusses are built for that reason
Fun project and good starting point but that thing is not gonna last five minutes on any target deeper than one inch.
Hey mate all valued points, I have Got 2 and there still going strong after nearly 4 years, wet sand they wouldn't last long though. Always room for improvement but not everyone has 3d printers this is a basic build that you can do with a saw and a drill. Have a crack and build one your way and post video, look forward to watching.

It was the end of 2015 when i made this video, 3d printers were then Big $$$$.
If trying to help or inspire people to have a go at making their own, is a crime then I'm guilty.
I made 3 sand scoops and only 1 has failed and 2 are still going strong to this day, they are mainly used in the soft sand of course.
Seems like you have all the answers? why not have a go at making one yourself and post the video of your creation for us all to see?

Excellent project, unfortunately the costs for a band saw, heat gun, vice grip and bench make it more affordable for me to just go buy a scoop!

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL using a bandsaw to cut tubing of any kind. If the blade is dull it will grab and spin your project forward and if you are holding tight you get pulled towards the blade.
10:38 Instead of Silicone, use a soldering iron and first tack weld it in place and then use the tip just like a welder. Poke, pull, poke, pull... I've made 90 degree angles the would not break with this method. I also poke the iron through the inside into the braced piece for extra support.
