Another underrated melodeath band is Mors Principium Est from Finland. Their recent album is just brilliant.

Insomnium and Wintersun............. Absolutely amazing. In fact I just love the genre as whole just...... Holy shit i love melodic death metal.
I used to listen to rap and hip hop and i was just curious about what was metal all about
so i typed best metal band clicked on this video and a whole new world of music opened to me, this happened two years ago I celebrate this holy day every year Then I re watching this video and all the ancient feeling comes back
of course i stopped to listen to rap&hophip i had tasted divine music.....

This video changed my musical direction from progressive metal to melodeath and I haven't been happier.
Kalmah are really the gods of melodic death metal. They're melodic, technical and have that heavy death metal sound. And you forgot Dark Tranquillity too.
I looked up this vid back in 2008 when I first started digging up some melodic death metal bands. it also introduced me to some good folk metal.

wintersun is the most underrated on the list and amon amarth is one of the only metal bands i know who gets progressively better over time

Fantastic list! Of course, the ordering is going to be a personal opinion. For me, based on the number of brilliant songs per album, Insomnium take the cake. I'd say 70% of their entire discography is worth listening to. Amon Amarth has some unbelievable intros, but a lot of their older stuff is very brutal/unmelodic. Kalmah have some fantastic lead guitar work but a lot of ok-ish stuff as well.

Amon Amarth should have topped the list. #2 band i never heard before, but sound like the only other band on this list worth a damn. Rock on.

The pioneers of Melodic Death Metal are the first bands from Götenborg "At The Gates", "In Flames" and "Dark Tranquillity". They "Invited" the genre in the early 90s with the albums (Lunar Strain and Jester Race from In Flames, 1993-1995), (Skydancer and the Gallery from Dark Tranquillity, 1993-1995) and (Slaughter Of The Soul from At The Gates, 1995) These 3 bands with their works should be always on number 1#
Especially the IN FLAMES - JESTER RACE ALBUM.
Awesome list dude. All the bands here are top notch and some of my best bands. It's hard to say which one is best but they are all awesome!! Good list.

Awesome vid!Most of my fav bands are there! but is there other bands like Kalmah,Ensiferum or Wintersun?freakin epic riffs but not too much keyboard or other instruments.

I would have put In Flames and Children Of Bodom to remplace the number 7 and 6 but Anyways great vid man ! Kalmah, Eluveitie, Equilibrium, Wintersun, Insomnium, Amon Amarth.... my favs in that genre

@DanteTrishVergil Viking Metal uses lyrics from old Viking Mythologies and their music creates an adventurous Viking atmosphere. Folk Metal combies regular metal with Folk music and a lot of bands use traditional folk intruments (accordians, flutes, bag pipes, etc)
