The twins of Gemini have always had individual names, predominantly Castor and Pollux, so there's really no excuse for this version of them to be nameless.

I think an automatic downfall of these girls is just having main girls. It makes sense in most ensemble casts to have a few characters that are more important than others, but if I'm a little girl, I'm going to feel alienated and left out if my star sign isn't one of the main characters. Why would I want to identify with something where I'm pushe do the sideline?
i remember this being an issue with star darlings, which was a disney line also focused on zodiacs as a central focus of their characters. im a cancer and literally stopped caring about it bc the cancer girl didnt get any screentime lmao

@iwakeupandboomimarat Yeah! Like I’m a Taurus and even though I loved it I wish the Taurus girl(Tessa) had a pinch more screen time. If you weren’t a Sagittarius, Libra, Scorpio, Virgo, or Leo you were kinda screwed.
To be fair, having 12 equally represented characters would be hard. They'd probably end up all being distinguished by their hobbies and blurring together on every other front.
As a Gemini, the roast wasn’t even that the twins are each other’s best friends, it’s that they’re the least interesting characters out of the whole cast. The creators were clearly very biased, they did us dirty 💀

It was highly steroetypical and cliche and I hated it - but as an identical twin, born on the first day of gemini, who basically didn't have names because we learned to respond to each other's (and when we corrected poeple were told that it didn't matter, they were close enough) and who were more often referred to as "the twins" or "the girls" by everyone including family, and we were both selectively mute for 10 years and barely talked to anyone other than each other, and had color coded items (blue and purple)... it pegged me LOL (the only thing I can't relate to is the Asian part).

The Zodiac Girlz feels like what would've probably happened with Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls if Lauren Faust tried to make the whole series by herself instead of just keeping it as more of a portfolio and project to pitch. You have the character designs, the push for dolls and an odd niche that can work but there's such a lack in putting these characters into an actual story that the whole thing ends up completely falling apart.

As a Sagittarius, as the girls were being described I was like, "wow, Sagittarius has no friends, does she? That hurts." And a person can be bookish while also liking video games, there's so much math and nerding out when you get into the grit of them.
Plus it completely misses the usual Sagittarius traits. Sag is a fire sign and is known for loving travel and adventure, being spontaneous and extraverted and energetic. Like how does “overly serious bookworm” fit that at all? That better fits taurus or virgo.

ngl zodiac girlz feels absolutely primed and ready for a modern reboot with a more magical girl bent in the vein of something like winx club or lolirock - really lean into the superpowered teens fighting crime thing by giving them cool transformations and flashy magical powers that correspond with their signs. if they were really determined to squeeze a doll line out of it as well, then the magical girl angle could give them an excuse to make lots of different kinds of dolls for all their different transformations.
Basically my Toon Makers Sailor Moon / Touhou inspired series Magic Warriors. They've got gemstones (Steven Universe who?) and astral signs.

The closest you can get is a line of figures called Sumy Twelve by Kikagoods. (Theyre not in stock anymore on the website but you can purchase them online elsewhere) Theyre majokkos of each sign + a secret 13th "goddess of the zodiac" (id have preferred of she represented the actual 13th constellation but whatever). Theyre all equally very cute and aesthetic.

I think the dolls could have more closely resembled their original designs if they had been done in a rag doll style instead, à la Groovy Girls. This would have ESPECIALLY helped in making Sagittarius’s hair a reality. Also, I hope you feel better soon!

I'm surprised they didn't lean into the sign's type. I think it's way easier to have like the main dolls as Fire, Water, Air and Earth signs as one big sister doll and the zodiac themselves be like their different outfits or powers or little sister dolls that can have different outfit and hairstyles.
EDIT: Plus, the zodiac girlies could theoretically buy multiple signs for like their moon, rising, Venus, ect. if the zodiacs had multiples of smaller dolls, especially if you lean into other factors like planets and birthstone. So I'm a Taurus, my moon sign is a Leo and my rising sign as a Virgo. If my idea were to work out, I would be able to buy an Earth Sign doll, a Taurus doll, a Leo doll and Virgo doll. Giving it like a collectables concept, once the design for the dolls are down, would probably make it much more adaptable for the market, I feel.

p.s. i'm happy you mentioned "legs-don't-work syndrome", it's pretty irritating to constantly see. most ppl, in my experience, use a wheelchair cos walking is too painful or too difficult, not cos of paralysis and while paralysis is of course very real and needs representation, it'd be great to see representation for other conditions too. i once was in a wheelchair in the hospital because the nurses there considered my shambly walk was too dangerous and i could hurt myself for instance. i'm either way happy to see disabled characters and i think for that time period it was pretty solid. plus i love how she has her sign on the wheels

29:11 I'm intrigued by the idea of a villainous 13th zodiac seeking revenge for being neglected and ignored for thousands of years. Especially since there is a constellation, Ophiuchus, that would have been part of the zodiac cycle if Sagittarius hadn't covered that portion of the year already. Despite having no existing concept art, I can easily imagine Percevil having a scaly/snake theme since Ophiuchus is also known as 'The Serpent Bearer'. Definitely a more interesting villain concept than Dr. Calamity, who just sounds like a generic mad scientist.
P.S. As someone who has a Sagittarius for a sister, I agree that Sagittarius' design is really random. My first impression was that she was a fighter pilot with the pants, boots and scarf. She was just missing the goggles and aviator jacket. Overall, not doing my sister's sign justice. 🙄

Omg, Trollz! I remember trying so hard to get the website to work after I got all the dolls and had codes to use. I never did manage to make it function right, not sure if it was my internet/computer or if the website was terrible, but I have some fond memories of playing with my dolls and watching the episodes in the morning before school. The theme song lives rent free in my head.
@@QueenoftheHorizon I remember for me I just wasn't sure how to fully use it, but I think at the point I finally got the hang of it the site did start to die down sadly :( I only remember being able to go so far as dressing up my character, accessing the games and theater but not much else.

The art style reminds me of that one show Lauren Faust was going to make with space girls; the moon being the main character. I don't remember the name of it though😅

The fact that she’s a skateboarder is so fun. I was definitely assuming she would be Taurus’ design from the group pictures before introduction.

I remember going onto the website when I was younger around the time it was on the verge of death. Even then, it was still fun. Those flash games are so nostalgic to me, especially that dress up game.
I never knew dolls existed until a few years ago and I honestly want all of them tbh. Even though the quality from what I’ve heard is great, the hair is made out of polypropylene, which means after a few years, it starts to dry rot and shed and/or fall out completely.
I’m also glad that TV series never went through thanks to you know who, it would’ve been a dumpster fire, and the character designs are terrible 💀

i was OBSESSED with the zodiac girlz as a kid. i have no idea how i stumbled upon the site, but “x character as cute girls” was and is a fascination for me so i was very into it.
as someone who grew up as a lil girl in the early-mid 2000s but didnt get to experience most Girl Websites(tm) for reasons, your videos are some of the most entertaining and enlightening that ive seen. im really happy whenever you pop out a new one and get to hear about your thoughts and experiences on stuff like this
however as a sagittarius im really sad that sagittarius here is kind of a no-nonsense serious girl who doesnt like libra. we should be characterized as flighty but fun-loving whoevers and sagittarius/libra friendship is like The sagittarius relationship. all two of my libra friends would be devastated

Fairy tails
I think I found this website as a kid! I had a lot of issues with internalized misogyny back then so I struggled between being like "eww so girly" but also being extremely drawn to the character designs lol. I feel like this totally *could* be revived, especially with the popularity of zodiacs and y2k style recently, but yeah they'd need a lot of reworking. Going the Hello Kitty route would be perfect, and their art style would be perfect for chunky little plastic figures (maybe even blind boxes, as much as I hate those).
Also, even if they couldn't afford full animations, why didn't they do little mini comics? those were plenty popular back in the day and child me would've eaten it up. I get your point about not giving the characters TOO much distinct personality, but if they were going in that direction anyway with their bios, relationships, and desire to make animations, comics (even little 1-2 panel ones) would've been a great alternative.

@@Ayoitsjeremy I mean, they do legitimately have problematic aspects, as Li spoke about? If they really make an effort to consult people of the cultures they want to represent and design a theoretical reboot accordingly, I think the majority of people would take that well. There will always be critics and bad actors in the community, but I don't think the fear of those people should prevent companies from trying at all. The Lily Chang doll from Rainbow High was praised for how much attention to detail and care about the culture she was representing. I know that's not the case for every doll/mascot character/ etc, but I believe people do take notice when they see that designers take the care needed to properly represent them.
I had the same problem as a kid where I simultaneously found dolls really fun and pretty, and was way too cool and un-girly to engage with them. These days I’m more into “girly” toys and cartoons than ever, yet I predominantly wear mens clothing. It’s almost like the two are not mutually exclusive

I was looking more into the Spumco cartoon and there's actually some posts referencing it on John K's blog, and interestingly it seems that Katie Rice (one of his victims) was actually the one who designed those versions of the characters. There are also a few others that weren't shown in this video. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

This reminds me a lot of this book that was a brief little tidbit of different goddesses and gods from mythology that focused on a group of girls that were modern personifications of various goddesses called Godess girls.

I feel like these dolls could have been cool if they were done in a way similar to the Diva Starz dolls, but with sculpted hair. Those were so stylized, it would be cool.

i feel like this could have had a lot of potential tbh, kinda sad it flopped. the designs, aesthetic, and concepts were so cute. this is the first time ive ever heard of them and i immediately was intrigued. on a side note, can you pls do a video on TROLLZ. I lived on their flash website in in 2000s.

i have a few things to say
1. i was way too young for this series, by the time it was dying out i was only like five lmao
2. this strongly reminds me of disney's star darlings series that they had in the mid-late 2010s. star darlings had a much more fleshed out story, and saw more success in the form of books, dolls, and a tv show, but it similarly had a lot of cancelled content
3. it's hilarious to me that sagittarius is really similar in personality to one of my characters who ALSO happens to be a sagittarius 😂

I think a lot of the same points you pointed out about the brand were pretty spot on to how I felt. I think my biggest issue about the brand was the fact that information about each zodiac sign was incorrect and the mascots' personalities didn't line up with their corresponding zodiac signs. Such as Sagittarius; her outfit corresponded with her sign. Sagittarius is known for being the adventurous zodiac sign and doesn't like being in one spot too long, but her personality missed the mark.
With that said, squandered potential is pretty accurate to describe this brand and that's kind of the vibe I got from Raven in her comment on my video. I love zodiac signs and I would love to see an updated reboot of this franchise: taking out the glaring stereotypes, fixing the information for each zodiac and their personas, of course as I mentioned in my video adding in more gender/sexuality diversity, as well as making sure that each zodiac sign got equal amounts of love as I did notice that when I was a kid that certain zodiac signs got more recognition over others. I also love the idea of doing the graphic mascot merchandise. They did kind of do this I found out. There's a stationary/sticker book kit out there on market places I've found and I was a little more attracted to that than the dolls, but having more of that I think would have been a better starting point and probably a cheaper way to get some marketing.
I would love a deep-dive into Stardoll, I was obsessed with that site as a kid.
Sagittarius might have been styled after Amelia Earhart, that is what I thought of when I saw her anyway. Looking at actual pictures of her doesn't show her in that outfit (though she has short hair), but more modern interpretations of her look do sometimes have her in those pants, similar boots, and with a red scarf.
Honestly I would love a revival, the characters have so much potential and would definitely thrive in either a comic series or web series
Gemini definitely also felt like it was leaning into the Siamese twins grossness which is often played as a set of generically Asian twins being incredibly, uncomfortably close with each other and purposely aloof and coy as they enjoy looking down on others (a la Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp)

I think I encountered this website--or at least these images--once, because I have a memory of being underwhelmed by Gemini's design. I didn't know it got worse! If I'd looked more into it and realized that Gemini didn't even get to describe themselves in their own words on their profile and were described as having no friends but each other, I would've felt attacked 😂 they could've easily made one twin chatty and the other more quiet and reserved, to show the kind of adaptability Gemini is supposed to be associated with? It just feels like they have no agency, especially when there's no story content aside from the profiles.

The style went from 2D to 3D and the also switched up the designs of the tooth fairies. I remember they all had their own page and personality traits but all that has been removed
When I see videos like these and learn about the things I could have known about and been obsessed with as a child, I always think about how different of a person I would be now if I had discovered these things!! 24:53 There were recently some Barbie dolls with a “pixie cut” (more of a shaved sides/long on top situation) that used fuzzy flocking, and it looked great as short doll hair! Granted, that still isn’t quite Sagittarius’s hairstyle, but a tiny afro is still much closer to her hairstyle than “we give up, here’s some long straight hair”
I think making dolls wasn't the path this franchise should have took. Backpacks, pencilcases (or maybe clothes and bags!) could have been better. I 100% would have bought a backpack with a zodiac girl on it. Maybe flash webpisodes or even comics would have been a better option, I agree with you!
