This is obvious now as an adult, but as a kid, stand-alone flash games just seemed to appear out of nowhere. This powerpoint is the flash game company equivalent of seeing your teacher in the grocery store.
I always saw Devil as a needy gremlin of a girlfriend who enjoys bothering the prim and proper Angel at work. She’s a demon, so causing mischief is the norm for her, and the sabotage is more out of teasing and wanting attention than actual malice. I saw the look on her face when she noticed the sabotage as more mildly annoyed than anything, and since she’s an angel she was probably able to fix the ruined hair/outfits/pets/etc fairly quickly. Despite the upset reaction, I think she’s just over dramatic rather than being genuinely sad. But I really like your interpretation too!

I meant it’s the norm in the world of this game since in cartoons and a lot of kids media demons just mess with people and don’t like, torture people or kill them, or any other truly evil stuff. Since the game is aimed at a younger audience, I don’t think that would be a thing the demons would do there.
@@hope539 it is boring that's why we should all forgo conjuration for summoning minions and go with necromancy instead. Sure the local peasantry won't be too stoked with you legions of the undead running about but they're just impossible to please and wouldn't have liked demons either. Some will doubt you but you are just ahead of the times and their just jealous that your skeletons stick around while their demons are only rarely summoned for longer than a minute.
The Devil girl trying to mess up someone's hair while the Angel girl isn't looking until she got caught red handed never failed me to make me entertained as a kid. Those "don't get caught" genre in the realm of Flash games is simple and unique for its time, but it can be downright strange sometimes, especially with those cursed "kissing" games.

Tbh instead of Angel being completely stupid and oblivious I sort of interpreted her as playing dumb until the point where Devil fucked up enough to be directly caught and she couldn’t pretend to not notice anymore. She hates Devil pushing things that far and forcing her hand when she sends her to angel prison, and that’s why she’s crying on the game over screen.
My personally theory all my life was that Angel loved Devil the whole time but they had a teasing sort of relationship. I think Devil is the more airheaded one, thinking she is being slick messing with Angel, but Angel has been here a million times before, she knows what Devil is going to do. She doesn’t just tolerate Devil, she loves having her around. Devil has always added some mischief to Angels “perfect” life, and Angel loves it. That’s why she does that little smirk and eyebrow raise, I see you Angel. Angel has had feelings for Devil the whole time, yes, but Devil herself has a hard time admitting it. She always tries to be around Angel and cause some mischief and at this point she has broken through Angels defenses, she is smitten. I think that the devilish Halloween game actually comes before the hairdresser game. Devil is trying to do her Devil duty and cause mischief, and Angel isn’t having it, at first. (She is still in her perfect Angel era guys, she needs to lesbian lover to show her the joys of life and being ‘bad’) Then by devilish hairdresser she has come around and Devil has broken through her defenses. She keeps Devil around because she likes her and doesn’t mind her mischief all that much, sometimes it’s annoying but she gets more used to it. Then Christmas happens, and they have a little falling out… It all gets better once they reconnect for the next few games. By this point it’s been a year or even more (by immortal standards ofc ofc) so Angel still longs for Devil, but has tried her best to move on. Devil needs a place to stay and so she stays with Angel. She works at Angels new pet salon (if you work at one place long enough living as long as they do, people will start to talk ya know what I mean). She tries to cause mischief again because that’s all that she knows but Angel is less perceptive. It’s at this time that Devil realizes her feelings for Angel, ever so slowly. BUT WHATS THIS? ANGEL HAS A GROSS HUMAN BOYFRIEND WITH THE WORST CHARACTER DESIGN EVER? ‘It’s okay we can just make her jealous by pretending we have a totally cool date- why is this ugly man flirting with me?’ So Devil does what Devil does best to get back at this two timing prick for trying to break her girlfriend- I mean best friends heart! They get into a little fight after this and Angel is rightfully upset about all that’s happening in her life right now, so she does the classic, dyes her hair and changes her style a bit. And so does Devil because she wants Angel to notice her more. And idk devil Angel magic, she can change how her horns look, that’s why humans don’t question them existing (idk). So after a bit more time and a bit more reconciliation, they finally admit their feelings for each other, officially move in together, adopt a cat, and love happily ever after. I find it hilarious that that angel getting kidnapped was the catalyst for their break-up when I interrupted that as some weird kinky thing that the girls just do sometimes. (hence why angel didn't give a shit about being kidnapped.)
A few theories I think angel and devil have a mutual friendly rivalry, Where they both try to get in eachother's way. We don't see this often because angel is almost never the playable character. We know because of devilish cooking that angel is not above doing the **exact** same thing that devil does. But they'll even help eachother when in trouble, such as alerting eachother when the cat is eating their food or devil poisoning angel's scummy cheating boyfriend. It's a kinda "no one hurts her but me!" Kinda deal Also, when angel "locks up" devil... it doesn't seem that bad. The cell is usually full of toys and sweets. I think it's more of a time-out rather than a real punishment. Also, I'm guessing the reason the stores are cannonically called "devilish ____" is because they opened it together. Hense why angel doesn't mind devil being there (aside from the mutually agreed rivalry thing) The different "devil" with the twin drills is a different person, but I imagine her as devil's apprentice. Not a devil yet, hense the lack of horns. She's aspiring to be a devil by learning from the main devil (by making an Angel's life more difficult)
I always saw them as an enemies-to-lovers story where criminal-Devil is placed under goody-two-shoes Angel's supervision after one too many divine misdemeanors to help her rectify her behaviour. Demonic rehab and community service thru helping Angel with her work as a hairdresser. She legitimately wants to change (thus the insecure body language, she's trying to stop herself from doing bad deeds but it's literally her nature, so she's grappling with the thoughts of "can I even exist without causing chaos" and self-worth). That's how the prison ending made sense - Devil has to go back into confinement because she fails her parole terms.
oh my god, little me had an entire fanfiction universe about these girls with multiple installments 😭 basically the devil girl was the cool goth and the angel was the dumb preppy rich kid, but they had to form an uneasy truce to take down the pet salon girls who they were common enemies with (because the lore was that there existed a big empire of these ”intentionally fucking things up” businesses and the pet salon was doing better). the stylist devil was the hairdresser devil’s little sister, and avata star sue was the angel’s bitchy best friend. the girl from the oriental/school/beach flirting games was the devil girl’s best friend. i never gave them romantic interests, and i was super bothered when they introduced a random man for the angel in the games. even at 7, i was lesbian as hell

when i was a kid my theory of these characters was that: Angels were supposed to make Devils a better person. So Angels, bc they are very kind they would let Devils stay at their house. And so they would let Devils near were they work so they would know how to do things right. But of course Devils werent easy to change and they will continue with their tricks and stuff. So everytime they wouldnt get caught during their pranks, Angels would thought that they were the ones who ruined their work. But if Devils actually got caught, Angels would had to accept that they wouldnt change that easy and so they will send 'em to Angel Jail ?

ngl this would be a really cute webtoon type of thing! personally i feel like (as a tragedy sucker as i am) as much as i would like to see them learning to coexist in a friendly manner, neither one can truly belong with the other comfortably unless they fully change their respective natures... even if Angel constantly forgives her, being kind and patient is just not something someone like Devil could ever be: both of them live in an eternal present, barely changed by cosmetic alterations, with no possibility of true change. unless Devil became an Angel (and losing her own nature in the process, between the choice of her own identity or the potential harmony with a loved one), or if Angel became a Devil (betraying her values and losing her morality for a human-like attempt at a relationship that might just not last), they would have to keep dancing this eternal dance of underlying romantic tension

What a coincidence because I've been obsessing to these games lately after learning that I can still play flash games! Actually, a very fun fact, the duo had a cameo to the Lovely Mermaid christmas game, which is a spot the difference game (I absolutely love The Lovely Mermaid, which features Gabriella, the blonde GirlsGoGames mascot). Angel and Devil showed up in their island as Santas giving gifts to the mermaids (and Devil tricked them all by the end)! I love the cameo, and the two being together in Christmas implied that they are celebrating Christmas TOGETHER!

I miss the 2009 days so much! The Devilish hairdresser games are brilliant! The character designs are pretty neat and the way the music changes drastically when the devil messes up a client's haircut is a nice touch. Sending a devil to prison solely for trying to mess up a client's haircut is pretty harsh though. :P You also brought up a good concern regarding the first game's challenge being too reliant on the angel's uncertainty. I like the way you analyse certain aspects of these games, such as graphics and sound design. Kudos! :)

I remember when I was younger, I thought Devil's horns were cardboard wings (I don't think I played a majority of the games, I mainly remember the human hairdresser game and the cat game) and that Angel was trying to like, redeem Devil and such. And Angel Prison was basically like "go absorb the good vibes and not be evil" considering that it was full of stuffed toys. Also Angel is very forgiving which is why she kept giving Devil a chance. I imagine the reason Angel tolerates Devil's presence in her salon because Devil is using some sort of magic to hide, making Angel and the customer unable to see her. However, it takes a lot of concentration, so it fails when she focuses on cutting hair and Angel is able to catch her in the act.

I interpreted the characters as mentor/student, Angel showing how to be a proper stylist and Devil being less mischievous but more exploring her artistic style and creativity. The insecure look being questioning her career choice/passion because the "right" way doesnt include anything creative or innovative to her. But seeing the other 6 games changes things a bit haha

I always saw Devil as a needy gremlin of a girlfriend who enjoys bothering the prim and proper Angel at work. She’s a demon, so causing mischief is the norm for her, and the sabotage is more out of teasing and wanting attention than actual malice. I saw the look on her face when she noticed the sabotage as more mildly annoyed than anything, and since she’s an angel she was probably able to fix the ruined hair/outfits/pets/etc fairly quickly. Despite the upset reaction, I think she’s just over dramatic rather than being genuinely sad. But I really like your interpretation too!

I meant it’s the norm in the world of this game since in cartoons and a lot of kids media demons just mess with people and don’t like, torture people or kill them, or any other truly evil stuff. Tbh instead of Angel being completely stupid and oblivious I sort of interpreted her as playing dumb until the point where Devil fucked up enough to be directly caught and she couldn’t pretend to not notice anymore. She hates Devil pushing things that far and forcing her hand when she sends her to angel prison, and that’s why she’s crying on the game over screen.

My personally theory all my life was that Angel loved Devil the whole time but they had a teasing sort of relationship. I think Devil is the more airheaded one, thinking she is being slick messing with Angel, but Angel has been here a million times before, she knows what Devil is going to do. She doesn’t just tolerate Devil, she loves having her around. Devil has always added some mischief to Angels “perfect” life, and Angel loves it. That’s why she does that little smirk and eyebrow raise, I see you Angel.
Angel has had feelings for Devil the whole time, yes, but Devil herself has a hard time admitting it. She always tries to be around Angel and cause some mischief and at this point she has broken through Angels defenses, she is smitten. I think that the devilish Halloween game actually comes before the hairdresser game. Devil is trying to do her Devil duty and cause mischief, and Angel isn’t having it, at first. (She is still in her perfect Angel era guys, she needs to lesbian lover to show her the joys of life and being ‘bad’)
Then by devilish hairdresser she has come around and Devil has broken through her defenses. She keeps Devil around because she likes her and doesn’t mind her mischief all that much, sometimes it’s annoying but she gets more used to it. Then Christmas happens, and they have a little falling out…
It all gets better once they reconnect for the next few games. By this point it’s been a year or even more (by immortal standards ofc ofc) so Angel still longs for Devil, but has tried her best to move on. Devil needs a place to stay and so she stays with Angel. She works at Angels new pet salon (if you work at one place long enough living as long as they do, people will start to talk ya know what I mean). She tries to cause mischief again because that’s all that she knows but Angel is less perceptive. It’s at this time that Devil realizes her feelings for Angel, ever so slowly. BUT WHATS THIS? ANGEL HAS A GROSS HUMAN BOYFRIEND WITH THE WORST CHARACTER DESIGN EVER? ‘It’s okay we can just make her jealous by pretending we have a totally cool date- why is this ugly man flirting with me?’
So Devil does what Devil does best to get back at this two timing prick for trying to break her girlfriend- I mean best friends heart!
They get into a little fight after this and Angel is rightfully upset about all that’s happening in her life right now, so she does the classic, dyes her hair and changes her style a bit. And so does Devil because she wants Angel to notice her more. And idk devil Angel magic, she can change how her horns look, that’s why humans don’t question them existing (idk).
So after a bit more time and a bit more reconciliation, they finally admit their feelings for each other, officially move in together, adopt a cat, and love happily ever after. The end.

A few theories
I think angel and devil have a mutual friendly rivalry, Where they both try to get in eachother's way. We don't see this often because angel is almost never the playable character. We know because of devilish cooking that angel is not above doing the **exact** same thing that devil does. But they'll even help eachother when in trouble, such as alerting eachother when the cat is eating their food or devil poisoning angel's scummy cheating boyfriend. It's a kinda "no one hurts her but me!" Kinda deal
Also, when angel "locks up" devil... it doesn't seem that bad. The cell is usually full of toys and sweets. I think it's more of a time-out rather than a real punishment.
Also, I'm guessing the reason the stores are cannonically called "devilish ____" is because they opened it together. Hense why angel doesn't mind devil being there (aside from the mutually agreed rivalry thing)
The different "devil" with the twin drills is a different person, but I imagine her as devil's apprentice. Not a devil yet, hense the lack of horns. She's aspiring to be a devil by learning from the main devil (by making an Angel's life more difficult)

I always saw them as an enemies-to-lovers story where criminal-Devil is placed under goody-two-shoes Angel's supervision after one too many divine misdemeanors to help her rectify her behaviour. Demonic rehab and community service thru helping Angel with her work as a hairdresser. She legitimately wants to change (thus the insecure body language, she's trying to stop herself from doing bad deeds but it's literally her nature, so she's grappling with the thoughts of "can I even exist without causing chaos" and self-worth). That's how the prison ending made sense - Devil has to go back into confinement because she fails her parole terms.

basically the devil girl was the cool goth and the angel was the dumb preppy rich kid, but they had to form an uneasy truce to take down the pet salon girls who they were common enemies with (because the lore was that there existed a big empire of these ”intentionally fucking things up” businesses and the pet salon was doing better). the stylist devil was the hairdresser devil’s little sister, and avata star sue was the angel’s bitchy best friend. the girl from the oriental/school/beach flirting games was the devil girl’s best friend. i never gave them romantic interests, and i was super bothered when they introduced a random man for the angel in the games. even at 7, i was lesbian as hell

when i was a kid my theory of these characters was that:
Angels were supposed to make Devils a better person. So Angels, bc they are very kind they would let Devils stay at their house. And so they would let Devils near were they work so they would know how to do things right. But of course Devils werent easy to change and they will continue with their tricks and stuff. So everytime they wouldnt get caught during their pranks, Angels would thought that they were the ones who ruined their work. But if Devils actually got caught, Angels would had to accept that they wouldnt change that easy and so they will send 'em to Angel Jail ?

What a coincidence because I've been obsessing to these games lately after learning that I can still play flash games! Actually, a very fun fact, the duo had a cameo to the Lovely Mermaid christmas game, which is a spot the difference game (I absolutely love The Lovely Mermaid, which features Gabriella, the blonde GirlsGoGames mascot). Angel and Devil showed up in their island as Santas giving gifts to the mermaids (and Devil tricked them all by the end)! I love the cameo, and the two being together in Christmas implied that they are celebrating Christmas TOGETHER!

I miss the 2009 days so much! The Devilish hairdresser games are brilliant! The character designs are pretty neat and the way the music changes drastically when the devil messes up a client's haircut is a nice touch. Sending a devil to prison solely for trying to mess up a client's haircut is pretty harsh though. :P
You also brought up a good concern regarding the first game's challenge being too reliant on the angel's uncertainty. I like the way you analyse certain aspects of these games, such as graphics and sound design. Kudos! :)
tbh I did view them as sisters even tho I'm gay as hell bc 1. I probs projected my own relationship with my sister onto it, as she was a blonde and I was some kinda alt kid who loved being a pain in the ass and 2. I remember when I was younger, I thought Devil's horns were cardboard wings (I don't think I played a majority of the games, I mainly remember the human hairdresser game and the cat game) and that Angel was trying to like, redeem Devil and such. And Angel Prison was basically like "go absorb the good vibes and not be evil" considering that it was full of stuffed toys. Also Angel is very forgiving which is why she kept giving Devil a chance.

I imagine the reason Angel tolerates Devil's presence in her salon because Devil is using some sort of magic to hide, making Angel and the customer unable to see her. However, it takes a lot of concentration, so it fails when she focuses on cutting hair and Angel is able to catch her in the act.
As a kid who was never really taught heteronormaty by my family [ they are homophobic, just didn't think they needed to do that lol ] I absolutely saw them as girlfriends. I remember I used to love playing the original celebrity makeup games they had, and they also had this really tasteless one of Paris Hilton where she went from very skinny to “fat” by having her catch food in her mouth. Would love to know if anyone else remembers this website too!

I literally screamed when u brought up the shipping!!! As a kid i ALWAYS thought they we're dating!! I remember even being frustrated in the Devilish Valentine game since it had a "love interest" and I thought they broke up or something 😭😭

In my mind too the cooking competition thing was the ending of them being michevious together instead of ruining things, its just cookies they are gonna taste the same even if decorated differently
I only saw the styling games growing up. I interpreted the characters as mentor/student, Angel showing how to be a proper stylist and Devil being less mischievous but more exploring her artistic style and creativity. The insecure look being questioning her career choice/passion because the "right" way doesnt include anything creative or innovative to her. But seeing the other 6 games changes things a bit haha
Same I always thought that the Devil characters were just bored cuz they weren’t allowed to cut hair or style anything.
