  • My further adventures attempting to convert an existing mountain bike to a mid drive e-bike using a Tongsheng TSDZ2 kit. In this video I fit the extra bits like brake levers, control screen and battery and take it for a test ride.

    For anyone installing this kit the Open Source Firmware is essential. It'll allow you to bring the cadence up and improves the ride immensely. You can also change the assistance levels as the difference between off (cycling through treacle) and level 1 (easy riding) imo leaves no in-between

      How do we get the open source firmware?

    for the battery installation on the frame, one either has to drill the frame and install 2 riv nuts to get a secure fitting, or use a nifty little accesory made by some nice canadians, called Grin Tripple Bob, or Double Bob, depending on the battery. I used one and that left my frame totally pristine :)

    Excellent, this shows the actual build process, with all the steps and issues. If the rear shifter cable does not fit at all between the motor and the bottom bracket, you can reroute it along the top tube and the seat stay. That's what I had to do, using a cable in a full-length housing and zip ties.

    Couple additional details folks need to know - likely need ebike rated tires, ebike rated wheels, and ebike rated chain. I have both Tongsheng and Bafang. TSDZ2 with torque sensor is way smoother than Bafang speed only sensor.

    Good presentation my friend, nicely explained, not rushed and to the point, and has made my mind up to do the same.

    The best way to secure the battery to the frame is to use a specific bracket called "Triple Bob" or "Double Bob" from Grin Technologies

    The upside down battery problem.
    An extra hole in the aluminium baseplate works well. If needed.

    Thanks for this video. I am planning to do an e-bike build using this motor. It would be nice to see you do hill climbing tests both with and without throttle.

    I GOT A tsdz2 350 W 36V on a Carerra Kraken. Hydraulic brakes so no brake switches but no problem. Also got a 500W 36V bafang bso2 on carerra . Different ride. Do not know which I like best.

    Great video, I've decided to get the Tongseng as well. Do you know if it is possible to add a full throttle with this kit? I know the other Bafong (cadence) allows you to. Just curious! 😊

    Brake sensors not needed with Tongsheng as it uses a torque sensor. You might end up changing display to a smaller one as VCD5 is not waterproof ;)

      I have a Bafang and wish I had bought a Tongsheng for the torque sensor but can you please explain why brake sensors are not needed with a torque sensor motor?
      Also as long as we are talking about that but does a gear shift sensor need to be used with a torque sensor motor?
      Thanks

    • @captainbungee
      @captainbungee 2 роки тому +1

      @@jamesgibson3242 I don't have brake sensors or a gear change cutout. If I'm braking I stop pedalling. Simple as that. When I change gear I just ease off the foot pressure on the pedal while the derailleur shifts then start applying pressure again afterwards. Works great.

    • @jamesgibson3242
      @jamesgibson3242 2 роки тому

      @@captainbungee Thank you for the reply.
      That makes sense that when braking you stop pedaling because who would pedal and brake at the same time and if you stop pedaling the motor should not be engaged. I just wonder why on a Bafang a brake cut off sensor is needed since the concept of stopping pedaling is the same.
      And what you say about easing off pedaling when you shift gears makes sens. I think in a few months I will switch to Tongsheng because I really want a torque sensor. The Bafang BBS02 is great but the cadence sensor is not as good as having a torque sensor.

    Thanks for the useful video. I've just ordered one from the same URL as you quote. How was your delivery time? Also, how much of a risk is it buying a battery: what assurance have we got as to the quality of the cells used? I'm probably going to build my own 52 volt battery. Cheers.

    • @artful-bodger

      All I can say is the battery I was sent seems pretty good. I imagine if your concerned, go for the LG cells. Delivery was a few months for me.

    Quick question about the break leavers
    Can I still use my old ones and just add a break sensor? Or do I need to add new break levers?
    Would love to hear back from you about that

    • @KekusMagnus
      @KekusMagnus Рік тому

      I bought the same kit and yes you can use a brake sensor, there are a few compatible models online.
      Personally, I did not use one at all, since this is a torque-sensing motor and it will only power-on when you are pushing on the pedals, so I find you really don't need the brakes
