I remember eating a cake like that when I was young. I was at a few church dinners and I loved it!! It was so moist and delicious and had a homemade cream cheese icing. I've searched many times for hat I thought was the recipe and I've made several cakes but they're not turning out moist like I remember and not exactly the same taste, so I'll keep trying until I find that recipe!! 😂❤️
Little rainy and chilly today in Tennessee so a perfect day to warm up the house with a little baking. A really great cake to have around for my 88 year old Dad to snack on. Not too sweet either. (I skipped the powdered sugar for topping) It's going to be perfect to have with my morning coffee.
My Mom made this cake when I was a kid, she said she forgot about this cake, but definitely were going to be making it, it’s so delicious! Thanks for the reminder!👍❤️
My mother used to make an applesauce cake that she put nuts, raisins and chopped dates in. I used to LOVE eating the batter of that cake. I loved eating the cake, too, but I'm a little strange like that. I enjoy eating batter and dough almost more than the finished product. And, what a shock!!!! At 59, I've never had a case of salmonella. Anyway, looks like another great recipe I need to try.
I love choc. chip cookie batter...I keep it in the fridge when I'm baking the cookies and darned if I don't find myself grabbing a spoonful of waiting dough a "few" times. So, I don't think that's strange at all, Doris. We can all blame our mothers (I'm kidding, of course) because they started the whole thing by always giving us the beaters to lick when we were kids! My mother baked everyday because my dad loved dessert after dinner with a cup of coffee. She taught all of us (5 kids) to cook and bake. As we got older, she handed off the dessert making for daddy to us girls for part of the week on a rotation basis! My granny was very funny about us eating raw dough because of the egg thing, too, so that wasn't something we got to do very often at her house. She also believed that you could not have little "crispy" edges around your fried eggs because if you burned the whites of the egg, it became toxic and could make you very sick. It's got to be a generational thing...she was born in 1908 and was half Native American. p.s. I love chopped dates in breads and cookies, etc., etc. Buon Appetit!
I used.to lick the spoon as a kid too. No more. I did get salmonella once, most likely from a salad bar that had been contaminated back in the kitchen when they used the wrong cutting board for the veggies... I have never been so sick before or since. It was really, really bad. You dont want to.risk it,.believe me.
Oh, man, hope you're feeling much improved. I had Campylobachter (sp?) once, which is one layer down from Salmonella and I know what you're talking about...got mine from cheese nachos at a major league ballgame and only took about 4-5 hours to hit me real bad...my hubby and I were at a piano recital that same night when it hit, oh, boy...I missed 3 weeks of work and lost over 20 lbs...I was very very sick.
I've done the same thing for most of my life, I'm 70, and still lick the spoon, beaters, or bowl. I remember when people used to drink or eat raw eggs in a kind of forerunner smoothie. Never heard of anyone getting sick back then.
I made this two days ago after seeing how good and easy it looked. The wife and I have had a slice each day and we now have “Jar of Applesauce “ permanently on our food shopping list! Thank you!
My Grandma, who was the best cook I've ever known, used to make an apple cake, and i have been wishing that i had asked her for her recipe (s) for my whole, (long) adult life!!! I wonder if this might be the recipe that she used. One can only hope. I think hers actually had chunks of apples in it though....hmmmm. Too bad life doesn't come with optional do -overs!!! Well, im sure it will be good, no matter what. Thanks Catherine for another sweet recipe!!! Have a beautiful day!!! 🍃🤗🍃
Hello! I made this beautiful recipe, today and let me tell you- IT IS PERFECTION. My house smells sooooo incredibly good and the cake is phenomenal. I did add walnuts (great touch) and I didn't feel the need to add powdered sugar. Thank you. I will be making this, again and again.
My grandma used to make something similar. if you hear someone sneaking into your kitchen it's just me stealing a piece😊 honestly, I can't wait to make this cake! thank you Catherine ❤
I made this yesterday and it is absolutely delicious!! I baked it in a bundt pan was my only change. This recipe went directly into my handwritten cookbook..it's that good. I will be making it again and again!
I made this cake, similar to the one my mom made at the Forest History Center for the 1900's lumberjacks as a history demonstration cooked in an antique wood cookstove inside the log cabin. Mom is gone now but I never got the recipie, and you made it for me. It was very delicious and moist; thanks for bringing back that taste of history for me.
Assalam o Alekum, I m from pakistan,I love baking and want to try baking with fruits and nuts together,ur receipe is perfect one and I m sure It will be a delecious snack for tha tea time.Thank u so much for sharing it in very good way.
Hello Catherine I'm from Pakistan I made this cake from your recipe everyone loved this cake I'm not so good in baking but your recipe is foolproof and super hit thank you so much for sharing such a perfect recipe
I am so grateful for your simple, yet thorough, presentation of ingredients as you prepare this cake. You do not divert from the recipe from start to finish, and then show the finished product with great satisfaction. That's the way I like to learn about a recipe. Many thanks. I shall try this one soon.
This looks yummy. I have some jars of applesauce still in my freezer from last year, so I’m going to try your recipe. I can smell all those wonderful spices. Some Cool Whip.
I make my own apple butter so I used it then added a bit more spice as well. I use wild flower honey as a sweetner in everything now that I have cancer. I also added 1 cup of Golden flax seed for texture. It looks and smells fantastic right out of the oven!
My Mom made applesauce cake when I was a kid. In her recipe it called for lard and if you tried to use something else instead, the cake wouldn’t rise. It was the only cake I’d eat as a child. I loved it since she didn’t put nuts in it.
Hi,you bake just like my mother did, her ingredients were simple and her cakes homemade.thank you for the sweet menories watching you prepare this cake.
I just made it, and omg my toddler and husband absolutely loved it! I halfed the sugar and used unsweetened homemade applesauce. Thank you! This is a keeper for sure!
I made this a couple of months ago & I found it to be everything u said it was. Very moist & just the right amount of sweetness. For it to be so simple to make I was happily surprised it was so good ❤
I've always hated 🍎 apple sauce up until NOW. The food pantry I go to always gives me lots cuz most people don't want it so they ask if I want the leftover applesauce cans. After making your MOST EXCELLENT SUPER FANTASTIQUE! cake I will never hate applesauce again thanks to you sweetie love ya God bless you.
I am going to try this today, but with plain pear sauce instead of apple. Made/canned a ton for the pantry from local Bartlett pears this summer and am excited to try it -- hope and pray it turns out good! Will keep you posted 🤗 Next year I will do it with applesauce if it's another great local fruit year!
Thank you for sharing this recipe & tutorial, Catherine’s Plates 🍎 I made apple sauce & now I’m going to make this cake! edit/update: it came out perfectly👌🏾
This looks delicious and it is definitely on my to do list. I love baking, but I am never able to eat all of anything by myself, so I share with neighbors. They will love this, too.
Well Catherine I’m a little slow responding but I have to say this cake is our favorite… I can’t even count how many times I’ve made it since this video and even making one tonight ( just got all the ingredients) ty so much for this fabulous dessert recipe
I remember my mom made this years ago and I've been trying to find the recipe ever since she passed! Thank you for posting it, I definitely need to make this for me and my hubby.
Yep, my mom would have added both. Someone else said their mom added dates, plus raisins and walnuts. My sister gave me tons of dates, and I've been wondering what to do w/ them.
Thank you for your scrumptious recipe! I often use applesauce in my baking but cant wait to try your recipe using raisins and hazelnuts as I dont have walnuts on hand. Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦 ⚘🤗
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I made it today. came out lovely. I used smaller pans so I got two out of this recipe. I have them wrapped and in the freezer as part of my freezer meals. Thank you again this will become a staple in my meal preps
I always mix the walnuts (or raisins if I'm using that instead) with some flour before adding to the batter. It helps to keep them from sinking to the bottom of the cake.
Can't wait to make it! Someones previous comments said they put raisins in it. I think that's a great idea and I think I might substitute some of the sugar with monk fruit and buy unsweetened applesauce. See if I can make it with less sugar. I also love vintage recipes!
I had forgotten about applesauce cake and how good it is. Thanks for bringing this one back to my consciousness. I am going to make this recipe for sure
My grandma always made this and I lost her receipe. I'm so happ I found ur receipe so now I cam make this..thanku so much❤
My pleasure 😊
My Mom, God rest her sweet soul, made an applesauce cake with raisins. Your cake looks really moist and delicious.
No walnuts for me. Chocolate chips yes!
I think I would chop the walnuts some.
You took my thought..... sultanas or raisins..
Oh my goodness! I should have read comments before I put it in the oven! I have a whole bag of craisins that would have been perfect!
Little rainy and chilly today in Tennessee so a perfect day to warm up the house with a little baking. A really great cake to have around for my 88 year old Dad to snack on. Not too sweet either. (I skipped the powdered sugar for topping) It's going to be perfect to have with my morning coffee.
I made it, too! It’s not too sweet
My grandmother used to make this. She baked it in bread pans. Delicious!!
My mom did that too lol.
Oh like a loaf. I like that idea.
My Mom made this cake when I was a kid, she said she forgot about this cake, but definitely were going to be making it, it’s so delicious! Thanks for the reminder!👍❤️

Your apple pie stuffed cinnamon roll cups went over great this morning at Sunday School. I think I'll do this for revival next weekend. Thank you!
Wonderful! I'm glad everyone liked them.

@Joette Springer How long did you bake it for?
Just the time given on the cake mix..
On a cake mix box..40 minutes 😋

I was wonderin about the raisins too.

Catherine, there's nothing like old fashioned goodness. Thanks. I'll be making some homemade applesauce tomorrow and the "let there be cake"!
I have my mom's recipe which she got off a can of Acme applesauce back in the 60s. Maybe not the exact same recipe but it's delicious!!!
I found two cans of applesauce and I might make this soon ❤ thank you!
I always mix the walnuts (or raisins if I'm using that instead) with some flour before adding to the batter. It helps to keep them from sinking to the bottom of the cake.
Yum! Brings back childhood memories.
I could not wait to make this cake...turned out great...like a spice cake...next time I plan to add some crushed pineapple...great cake...thanks.
It looks delicious and so easy to make. I would chop the nuts, 'tho, as i don't like having huge pieces of nuts in my cakes, etc.
Another success! You are such a blessing. Thank you!
