Remember the episode when Elizabeth was trying to learn all of the recipes of grandma ‘s. There was one particular cake she just couldn’t get right. I think she had tried at least three times. Grandma finally revealed the one ingredient she left out. It was the recipe as was referred from the steel of the Baldwin ladies. That was a good one!

The Walton's is one of my all time favorite TV shows. Mom and I used to watch it together. She would often cry through the program because it reminded her so much of her growing up days during the Great Depression. Many sweet memories. So excited about getting this recipe. So special.

Howdy folks, I'm your neighbor over here in Oklahoma. When I was in high school, I started to make an applesauce cake from a recipe from the side of our bag of Shawnee Flour. My daddy loved it so much! He used to say, "Sis, will you make me one of your apple sauce cakes today?" That was in the mid-seventies. Daddy died my sophomore year. I'd give anything to hear him ask me to make it for him again. I can't remember the recipe, and I can't find it. I do think it was quite a bit like this one. I made it in a bundt pan. It had a glaze rather than frosting. Thanks for posting this. I am going to give it a try!

I've recently been watching The Waltons on Utube and I love it more now that I'm older than when I did as a teen....
I just watched the episode where Grandma was teaching Elizabeth to cook the cake and finally telling her the secret ingredient was a little of THE RECIPE from the Baldwin sisters! Shocked me and gave me a belly laugh coming from Grandma!

This is awesome!!! This is the cake Olivia made for Christmas on the very first Walton movie before the Series began!!! Patricia Neal played Olivia in this movie!!! I think she had to walk to Ikes store to get some sugar to make the cake and the kids were cracking nuts out in the barn for the cake!!! Good memories for sure!!! I just love your vintage kitchen!!! Reminds me of my Grandparents cozy kitchen where Grandma spent hours cooking on an old wood stove!!! I made a banana cake with cinnamon this am and decided to make a brown sugar icing...It was like fudge by the time I was done with it!!! Tasted great!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!!! God Bless🙏

janice NICHOLS- Yes, THE HOMECOMING, set in 1933. I have that movie on VHS and DVD. I love that movie and could sit down with the Waltons and fit right in. Our NH working farm is a testament to 1940. We are pretty much frozen in time. My father-in- law's 1940 panel farm truck is still in the hay barn. We have to roll it out to get it started! When we built our farm cottage in 2016, the kitchen is a combination of 1930 and 2016. The back wall has a 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove and a 1924 Hoosier baking cabiet. Also a 1900s Faultless treadle. Only thing I'm missing is an oak ice box. Still looking for a small one. New Hampshire winters often have power outages, so we use the wood stove often. That was an awesome era!

You are so good at taking me back to my childhood! Being originally from Virginia it really takes me home! My mom always made an applesauce cake and a hermit cake at Thanksgiving and Christmas! The house always had the most incredible fragrances of the various spices. Mom actually put just a tidge of bourbon in her applesauce cake. The alcohol would cook off but the flavor was delicious! Thanks for another warm jog to my memory!!!

John boy was out on one of his travels, and Olivia wanted to make sure she had an applesauce cake for him when he came back home. The Waltons were my favorite as well. I have most of the DVD series. I loved hearing that screen door slam. I wanted to live with them, too, and had a crush on John Boy. A few weeks ago, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton) made this cake on her channel. It included "the recipe" from the Baldwin sisters. Corinne I think was a great aunt or something who lived in a cabin in the woods and she painted the horse buggy for the family. Someday I want to go to the Walton reunion at the Walton museum in VA. Thank you for making this.

It was the best of times...it was the worst of times. I just love catching up with the both of you. Feels like we are indeed sitting on the porch chit chatting. Those are the times I really miss with my grandparents and my great aunts and uncles. We sure didn't know what we had until it was gone. Maybe I'm just extra emotional lately, but I cried a little at the end of your video. Yes, we need to keep our eyes on the Lord. His Grace is sufficient. Love y'all! God bless you and thanks for sharing another yummy recipe and a piece of your heart with all of us. ❤️🙌

Loved all the old shows like the Waltons and we do watch any old show like that when we can. Old fashioned values were taught in those old TV programs…so sad to see how things have changed. You and Danny remind me so much of my husband and me. I love watching the two of you together. …so darn cute together! I will try this cake this fall…too hot now to turn that oven on..lol. Thanks again for a nice recipe and video!

I'm 42 and I grew up on the waltons, I loved the show. I can remember when I was little and my brother was still at home some times when we started to go to bed we'd all tell each other good night. I was quiet for a moment and I would yell out " good night John boy lol and we'd tell each other good night the way they did on the show. I too grew up on Hee Haw, Dukes of hazzard, Dynasty, Gilligan's island those were the best old days. What I'd give to have them back and have my mom, daddy, sister, brother and my grandparents back. At least I can dream of being back in my old home with them.

I too loved the Waltons. I always wanted to live with them also. We didn't have an actual farm, but we always lived in the country and raised a garden and our own meat. Dad always hunted.
We watched all those shows you mentioned too. Plus right after we got home from school we would watch Gilligan's Island. God Bless!

My daughter and I have watched every one of the Walton shows. She started watching with me when she was three years old and she just loved it (along with Little House on the Prairie)..one show was on Tuesday and the other was on Thursday. I always thought to live like the Waltons would be so much fun and Grandpa was my favorite character..I liked when he would get Grandma riled up...The applesauce cake would be a great addition to a holiday brunch or at a ladies church function. I think one of the tv channels has The Waltons on around noon time, but I don't watch much television anymore..life has me too busy these days. Good to see the "taste tester" back in the kitchen! Mr. Brown is a keeper, for sure. Thanks again, Ms. Lori, for another historical recipe...have a great week❣️

I loved all those shows. I was born in 1963. I loved the house. For awhile we had rotary phone and 3 tv channels and the tv antenna and a record player. My grandma Dad’s mom had a tv with radio and record player and I sure thought we needed that tv.
    Cake looks delicious,
Ps Dragnet was my all time favorite tv show and still us.
Seen heehaw and Lawrence welk because my parents watched it.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣...I fell off the couch laughing. Mr.Brown hanging out in the kitchen was just just like my Grandpa back in the 70's. He drove my Grandma crazy until she got smart and put him to work in the kitchen. My Grandma was making this cake long before the Waltons were ever on T.V.
When I was as a kid we only got one T.V. channel and we had many of the programs you mentioned. The station sgined off at midnight and didn't come back on until 6 am.
Oh what great memories you've brought back to me. Thank you, bless you both.
