This goes to show just how good Bob Morton's team were before his untimely accident.
The chassis they built was perfect, and they chose Murphy very carefully to ensure they had a subject with enough mental and spiritual fortitude to not take himself out.
When OCP themselves try it, they're truly offering the corporate version - low quality body, poor subject screening, cost cutting, cookie cutter facsimile. Bob's team really took pride in their work.

      Yes. Seriously.
Robocop 1 ended on an ambiguous note. Does Robocop thinks he's Alex James Murphy brought back to life or did it assume the identity of Murphy to cope with it's reality?
Notice how Robo never refers to himself or is refered to as Alex Murphy. Just Murphy. He even says that Alex Murphy is dead. We know it's Murphy's brain and face over all the metal. But does the cyborg think he's Alex Murphy? A modern Ship of Theseus.
This theme of Identity and Humanity is the core of the franchise.
So, why is this scene important? Because it shows these prototypes cannot cope with their new reality. The entire reason they gave Robocop Murphy's face was to give him an identity his brain could see itself as. Also to make him appear friendly to humans. The prototypes also lack the willpower Murphy had, that made OCP Crime Prevention Unit 001 a success.
So, the reason they decided to put the brain of a megalomaniac in control of overwhelming firepower was because they figured it would revel in the power affordee by it's cyborg body. And it was a drug addict they could control using drugs to reward it with a dose whenever it did something right. Like training a dog.
This movie is way deeper than leople realise. Still not as good as 1, but still brilliant. It's also a forced sequel that is a meta-commentary on forced sequels.

Oh I think about this kind of thing all of the time.
Like, what lengths am I willing to go to to continue to exist?
What kind of possible hells am I willing to risk, what kind of monster am I willing to become?
      I fear death severely.
The thought of transferring my mind into a robotic body is very enticing.
However, I'm trying to write a sort of story that's a bit kinder in the approach.
Most of the characters are prone to keeping their original body, at least for a time, and their mind is both biological and machine in the same way you are both your conscious and subconscious mind.

I think an important factor in OCP's downswing in quality, was Bob Morton's death. Robocop Mk1 (Alex Murphy) was Bob's pet project, and he seemed to know what he was doing for all of it. He not only chose a test subject that was dead, he also wiped the subject's memories. After that he was careful to surround the project with friendly employees (they even invite the half-finished cyborg to a New Year's party).
I can only speculate how much worse these two had it during their transformations.

Here is what I see with these failed prototypes:
    - (0:11): Distinguished by its heavy armor and asymmetric hands (five-digited left hand and a three-digited right hand), it looks like it was originally meant to be specialized for defense, room-clearing, or EOD scenarios. It can use its stronger right hand to carry a shield or anything heavy, whereas its right hand was made for precision and delicate tasks (i.e. firearms, buttons. etc.). Such heavy armor and specialization had a more important task: protecting its 'user' (or 'test subject' for the sake of euphemism).
Judging by the remote/PDA in the scientist's hands, and as with all OCP cyborgs, this prototype was no different in that it was powered and controlled by a human brain; however, it appears that the 'test subject' was kept unconscious until the face shield was lifted. From what I can tell, it seems that this prototype relied on the unconscious brainwaves of its 'test subject'; a live test subject would have been too rebellious and dangerous, knowing that their becoming a cybernetic 'pet' of OCP. Unlike RoboCop (formerly 'Alex Murphy'), there was little to no regard for the range of locomotion, ergonomics, and comfort of its 'test subject' - it's literally encased in a tight armored box. Needless to say, once the 'test subject' awoke and realized what was happening and what it became, combined with a sudden bout of claustrophobia, it malfunctioned, stunned everyone (via non-lethal gunshot wounds), and killed itself.
This would have been a great defender-based cyborg, but OCP was too restrictive and controlling - it became nothing more than a glorified RC robot.
    ----
    - (0:41): Distinguished by its skinny physique and limbs, this prototype's design had balance and maneuverability in mind. Whereas the first prototype and RoboCop were slow and lumbering tanks, this second prototype was like an armored jeep; it's lighter, faster, narrower, and sleek. Unfortunately, in order to cut down on weight and bulk as much as possible, the design removed as much flesh as possible (except for the brain, nerve system, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system).
Needless to say, there is nothing left by bones and vital organs (all kept in the torso, spine, and skull). As long as this prototype didn't remove its armor or protective casings, this perhaps had the most 'friendliest' appearance of all the OCP cyborgs. Sadly, the 'test subject' underneath was in constant pain and misery; the only way to express his discomfort was to cry for help. To do so, he needed to remove his helmet to talk; however, taking off his helmet severed the connections between his brain and every cybernetic system, subsequently shutting them down and, well, killing him.

A lot of what made the original Robocop model successful was the person they put in the machine: Alex Murphy. His devotion to law and order gave him a reason to live, regardless of whether or not OCP programmed him to uphold it. Furthermore, his religious upbringing instilled in him suicide as not an option, giving him another reason to persevere through his circumstances.
I think what also helped Murphy not commit suicide was how the original Robocop body was designed to resemble a human in a massive bodysuit. It was actually revealed that Murphy’s face was put on Robocop’s metal skull because while his memory was erased, his brain would still remember being human, and would break if it saw itself with a metal face in a mirror. With the Robocop 2 prototypes, each one looked increasingly less human and more robotic, with disproportionate features and clear mechanical components, culminating with the behemoth known as RoboCain.

After many months of breaking my head about those two robots, I think I finally figured out why they trigger us on such a deep level of irritation and uncomfotablility.
Both are perfect examples of a human soul being TRAPPED. The first one is hidden behind plates of armor and even the simulated face is trapped in a small and bulky screen and covered by some sort of an electronic installation. Second one is just a slowly rotting skull they pro forma forced into a metal hull that might feel more like a prison cell than a body.
No wonder both went nuts at the very second they were activated. Imagine waking up and being trapped in your children's doll's body while someone you don't even know controls your every step via programming or remote. How would you NOT want to commit suicide, then?
BTW: I think it isn't even a malfunction that the first robot tries to put everybody there under arrest - they must have broken pretty much every rule that defines our living as individuals respecting each other and the brain of a dead cop would logically see through this injustices and try to stop it. The inconsistency between the morale values and the action observed would brake the sanest human's mind, let alone that one of a robot that isn't even aware of the situation on the whole scale.

When I was younger, the shrieking skull was scarier because it's so up-front and visceral, but watching this again as an adult... I honestly think the first one that shoots the scientists and then itself is worse, just because of how haunting the implications are:
    1. The projection of the guy's face starts off with lidded eyes and a gaping mouth, and when the visor flips up, he suddenly blinks and glances around, like he just woke up.
    2. He seems to have some sort of tube in his left nostril. I initially assumed that the thin bar above his lip was connected to that and was administering oxygen to him, but when he moves his head, only the nostril tube moves. The horizontal bar does not. This, plus the fact that it looks kind of shiny, suggests that it isn't a medical item, but rather some sort of support structure holding his head in place.
    3. He CAN move his head at all.
    4. As soon as he sees the scientists to his right (or perhaps the audience), he starts screaming.
    5. Once the screaming starts, his face-screen starts flickering and smoking, like he's being electrocuted.
    6. When he pulls out his gun, he shoots 2 of the scientists first, then himself.
Put together, this 15-second scene paints a horrifying backstory. At *best,* this guy has had some portion of his upper body - possibly his head, heart, lungs, and maybe some small part of his digestive system - stuffed inside of that metal chassis and locked in place. At worst, it's as little as just his head (and possibly lungs) lopped off and hooked up to a crude life support system like those Soviet experiments with decapitated dogs from the 1940's.
If it's the former, he's likely under heavy sedation to minimize pain and maintain basic compliance.
If it's the latter, he's genuinely barely alive, probably in a horrible fever dream-like mix of agonizing pain and being barely coherent from his brain receiving the bare minimum to live and outputting constant adrenaline and cortisol.
Either way, he immediately starts to glitch out, possibly due to some sort of hardware issue. However, contrary to what Hollywood tells you, machines don't just start to spark and smoke when they begin chugging or get caught up in some sort of loop behavior. It's more likely, I think, that the electrical flashes are signs of some sort of pain compliance system - likely a backup to the sedatives and analgesics to get him to do what his programming says to. The drugs are the carrot, and the electroshock system is the stick. That, I think, is why he shoots the scientists first. If he was just depressed or horrified over his current state, he'd just have shot himself. His screaming may have started off as terror or trying to call for help, but as soon as the shock treatment started, his fear gave way to anger. He was, for the moment, lucid enough to know what was happening - and he capitalized on it.
The worst part, though, is that he might have survived. If you compare the spot where he shot himself in the head to the equivalent spot on a human body, it is *way* too far forward and too high to be a guaranteed kill shot. That was a shot to the front of the cerebrum, which is the power center for memories, personality, and certain learned behaviors. The fact that the robot just lurched forward and didn't fall over entirely also implies that the damage he inflicted on himself wasn't critical. He might not have done anything that day except LOBOTOMIZE himself and piss off the scientist that keeps him alive and maintained by shooting him in the arm and killing his coworker/love interest.
There's a non-zero chance that TV-face guy is locked up in OCP's basement somewhere, in a dark room, stripped of his weapons and mobility, hanging from suspension chains and hooked to a full-scale hospital life support system, brain-damaged but alive, and possibly even still conscious.
Alone, in silence, in the dark, all sensory input either reduced to the bare minimum or no longer functional at all.
    For 35 years.
He has a mouth, and he can scream.
    But nobody can hear him.

I VERY much doubt she was the skull bot.
Simple reason why. As well as killing her, the first robot also ran a bullet through the arm of the other scientist.
That shot scientist appears with the skull-bot, wearing the type of sling you would put on someone with a recent injury.
Turning the dead scientist into a robot would take months (going by how long it took to turn Murphy into Robocop)
By then, the scientist with the shot arm would have recovered sufficiently to either not need a sling (if it was a non-fracture injury) or have a full cast on the arm (if bone was fractured). A more serious injury would have resulted in the arm getting sawn off or replaced by a prosthetic.

This scene proves that Robocop was literally one of a kind, and he could not be so easily replicated. Robocop’s creator, Bob Morton, understood cybernetics, which is why the Robocop program succeeded in the first place. After Bob was murdered by Clarence Boddicker in the first movie, OCP no longer had anyone knowledgeable enough in their R&D department to create a second Robocop successfully (as seen in the above clip). This is what I’ve always believed after seeing this scene.

An overlooked detail, Murphy's memory was (temporarily) erased. At the moment he was fully activated, he was Robocop only. He knew no other life.
Over time, his memories resurfaced, gradually immersing him in the reality of having been something else before. By the time he knew himself as Murphy, it seems enough time as Robocop had passed to be used to it.
Granted, from that point his sense of duty and religion would have kept him from ending himself.
Seems to me memory erasure was not done with any version of Robocop 2. Might have worked out better if it was. No guarantee version 2a and 2b wouldn't have ended themselves after remembering themselves, but at least they would have made it out of the lab.

This scene is grim and horrifying, but it's also hilarious because of the little upbeat fanfare they play when they come in. 😂 Also, the stop motion adds a certain weird surrealness to it which would be hard to recreate with other methods.
BTW, when I was a kid, I remember watching a taped wrestling event my dad brought home (borrowed from a co-worker). It was Hulk Hogan vs Sgt Slaughter; Hogan's forehead was bleeding and Slaughter was digging his fingers in and I was thinking "is he trying to pull his skull cap off?! 👀💦" In retrospect, I think I was having unsettling flashbacks from Robocop 2. So yeah, probably not the best movie to show a small child. :P

Fun fact, the same guy actually worked on the Revenant model and the models for this movie, so pretty much!

@@ZombieSlayerN05The movie was mostly filmed in Dallas and id software is located north of there. It's cool the film crew used him for the animations.
