  • The second episode in our series 'The Chain of Being', discussing Medieval cosmology and how it informed all aspects of Medieval life.
The feudal system has a bad reputation these days, but what actually was it? And how did it fit into the Medieval worldview? In this video we'll try to answer that question.

Who do you think had the harder job? Laboratores, Belatores, or Oratores?

I don't know if being a warrior was every proposed as strictly a feature of the feudal system as much as being a peer and actual holder of land was, however, another great video. Thank you! But do mind that by the late medieval ages there were about 8 estates (iirc) in England and the whole three estates structure was more of a French thing. Also England had a high degree of merchants become knighted later on and some e.g. the De la Poles even became Dukes in a few generations

Oh absolutely, and the De La Poles are an excellent example of that "new money" become nobility. We could probably do another video about the estates, as they do get complicated, but we only wanted to introduce the idea here. As for being a warrior, I suppose it depends on which side of "The Great Stirrup Controversy" you fall (perhaps another future video?) Personally I lean towards feudalism and the warrior class developing hand-in-hand, but as with all things in history, there's a lot more nuance and debate/discussion to be had! So glad you're enjoying the videos!

Literally no part of this does not apply to modern life
