Can you imagine the stories of the artist who formally used these supplies…. Like what was life like for them, what excited them about their process and what was life’s struggles like… what motivated them!!!
Lovely florals with the pastels. I've got the same vintage sets and love them. I collect vintage art supplies and use them all now and then. It's so much fun to experiment with them. Thanks for your vlog...So calmimg.
Hi Dionne, I love the way you’re using these unconventionally and your painting is so fabulous. If you’re interested in traditional dry info? Soft pastels are tricky to work with, so firstly be gentle with yourself. The trick is, you don’t want to see the white of the paper, and you want those delicious layers, but since soft pastel needs some tooth to grab onto, the papers tooth gets full quickly, and you can’t add more layers. The pastels you got are in the “hard pastel” of soft pastels category, so they typically are used first because they don’t fill up the tooth as quickly, and they’re less expensive, then you add the softer category pastels on top. The paper used is almost like a literal piece of sandpaper, but archival and it’s very expensive. Softer soft pastels can be VERY expensive as well. A good set for the price, that is pretty soft, but not as soft as they get, is Sennelier, the Paris set, half sticks, don’t buy the full sticks, the formula is not as good. I’m an art teacher so I basically study art supplies. It’s hard to explain, but if you want I can find the UA-camrs who have the best tutorials on the subject, I just can’t remember their names right now, because my brain is full. Keep doing what you’re doing though, because YES!!
How exciting to find your channel. I am venturing back into pastels and adding watercolor to my art world as well. Most importantly, I have searched for a left handed artist, since I lost much of the use and skill of my right hand and arm. I was so excited to find your video today AND more mportantly to see that you are AMBIDEXTRIOUS! Through the Lord's Grace and hours of work, I am able to use my right hand for short periods, but when I don't want to quit working, I switch to the left. I was encouraged to switch from realism to a more Impressionistic style and to "loosen" up my style and learn a new way of painting. I was so blessed to find Monet Cafe at a dark point in my life, and today I can add you to my art therapy channels. The Lord is so good. I am going to go back through your videos and watch, and watch, and play and play. Thank You and Lord Bless! Sincerely, Teresa @ Providence Valley Farm.
Are they for sale? Part of my New Year plan is to get back into water coloring. I was prolific as an adolescent and young adult, then life got in the way. You and Debby have inspired me to do furniture art, and now I need to return to paper. Keep up the amazing journey!
Pastels are oil based and are meant to be blended with a dry brush or sponge tip or your finger. You will find the saturation of color is more intense or pale determined by how much you blend. Pastels are the equivalent of DIY paint. Think charcoal sketch. The finest Pastels in the world are still made by Sennelier and they are still made the same way since the company started in the 18th century.
What a wonderful peek into your world, my friend. I will never forget the day you found that vintage art box. It was like a scene out of a movie. 💜💜💜💜
