  • It's truly time for me to stop hoarding art supplies and re-evaluate my relationship with, not only art materials, but "stuff" in general. I'm looking forward to breaking the habit of wanting more-because, that's exactly the problem, it's become a habit. And is in turn reducing the quality of my life. Hopefully some of you can relate, but regardless of whether or not you agree with my thought process, feel free to share your opinions below :)
This art piece was your standard case of: "it's not coming together as I hoped, so I'm just going to throw 10 different mediums at it". One day, I'll get to the point where I don't have to fall back on this method as a crutch. The woman in the reference photo [bit.ly/3bj3YQs] looks nothing like the end result of this piece, but I'm glad she at least looks human.
Capturing likenesses isn't my forte. And again, it's something that I really plan to work on this year. Granted, I used the reference to capture the pose and draw in the facial features. Once I had my simple sketch down, I put it away. I suppose the key to capturing a likeness is to refer to the reference throughout the creation process. . . doh!! So that one's totally on me haha.
The supplies I used are linked below, and are mostly student-grade materials. I would love to one-day upgrade to professional-grade materials, especially if I improve enough to be comfortable with selling originals; however, it all depends on how 2021 goes. After my no-buy year, I'll re-evaluate where I'm at in terms of both skill and mentality, and decide whether professional materials are something that I truly need. We shall see~
As usual, thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video. I truly hope you enjoyed it~

Hola! I just published a blog post about hoarding art supplies. It has my updated thoughts on the subject. If you're interested, feel free to read it here: bit.ly/4880uL2 😆

I've been thinking whether to comment on this video since it's old, but it's new year and the time of no buys!! Are you going to post a video about no buy this year?

Hi amozinshade 👋🏼 I do plan to film an updated video about buying too many art supplies, yes. Not necessarily a no-buy, more of a "low-buy" I guess 😋

I related so hard with the bunch of art supplies that I never used after purchasing them because they were a bargain or looked pretty etc segment in your video. Told myself that I would stop buying art supplies a few years ago before I would buy more or to replace what I have . I still do a couple times a year but I really must start using the ones I have.. It really is a reflection of own habits and having the luxury to live in a state of excess.

Hi Miyu! I'm with you. It's so tempting to go out and try every shiny new product out there. But it really is excessive. I'm glad you can relate, and even more glad to know that you're resisting the temptation of new art supplies! This is something that I'm also working on. Good luck to us both haha 💪🏽 Thanks for commenting!

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I can related to EVERY word you said.

I'm glad you can relate!! While I wouldn't say this no-buy year has been life-changing, it's definitely helping me realize all of the nonsensical purchases I've made. Overall I feel less overwhelmed (and my savings account is a lot happier too). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰

LOL I know, half the fun of doing art is building a collection 😵 Though I can say that what I've saved so far in art supplies, I've spent on ordering takeout..

This resonated with me. It will take me a lifetime (I’m old, lol, that’s a true statement for me) to use up what I have. I’m trying to reduce “excessive” behavior in general this year - shopping, eating, drinking, etc. This will include my art shopping. I will say, somewhat in my defense, I use everything and never allow myself to be afraid to use a good supply because it’s precious or fear of not being good enough. Life is too short for that trip! I’ll look forward to your future videos.

Oh gosh, yes I catch myself being careful with my expensive supplies. I have to remind myself that I didn't invest so much into a palette for it to look pretty on my shelf haha. You're totally right, life is too short to be concerned over using art supplies.

Thanks for watching!! Sorry about the audio quality. I have a Yeti mic, so the sound should be crisp, but I kept messing with it in Audacity so now it sounds a bit robotic haha. I'll try to leave it alone next time.
When showing a quick tour of my art supplies, I said I didn't use my colored pencils often, but then listed my Prismacolor Scholars as one of my go-to supplies. It's true that I hardly use my Premiers, but I usually rely on my Scholars a good amount when adding textures to a watercolor piece if it still feels unfinished (refer to description). Anything on the first two levels of my Ikea cart are supplies that I use more often than not. Anyways, I'll go into this with more details once I film my art room tour 😙 Until then, take care~

This is so relatable! These are the guidelines I've set myself
    1. I have two hobbies - painting, and sharing paints (setting up palettes on the fly for friends, Happy Mail, etc.). These are technically two different things.
    2. Mission Critical Replenishments Only! (It could be for either hobby, but this helps clarify which "what ifs" are reasonable)
    3. If you bought it to use it, then dang it, USE IT!
I hope it's still going well for you.

    • @JuliRoxArt
      @JuliRoxArt  5 місяців тому +1

Wow setting up palettes for friends? I’ve never heard of someone referring to that as a hobby. You chose colors for them? What kinds of paints do you work with?
I completely agree with you, art supplies are meant to be used! If not, what’s the point?

@@JuliRoxArt I use watercolors, and almost exclusively buy paints in tubes for that reason. Sometimes it's just the teeny mini pans sizes, so a little goes a long way! I do try to select colors I know or expect that they'll love, while keeping the palette well rounded.
It's admittedly a tricky balance! But it means my "overstock" is typically things that I'm intending to share, so it makes it easier to manage overall. (:

Wait untill you are ready to do a big art supply declutter! Im getting to it haha. I used to do claymation and still have all the clay for the "what if".... Going to declutter some stuff soon. More space for hobbies i actually enjoy! I mean how many projects/hobbies can you really do at once?

Hahaha girl, forgotten resin-related items, scrapbook paper, sculpting materials.. i could write a book! "Oh I might get back to it eventually..." L-I-E-S.
Yet for some strange reason we still keep it all around 😂
