Code Monkey

- This was an animation that was done in about 2 1/2 weeks. My friend Tom Weiser and I wanted to put together a short for a free ASIFA event. We are both fans of Jonathan Coulton so we figured a music video would be fun. I know Code Monkey already has a lot of videos made of it, but having worked as a web design/developer for the government...well how could I not?! I hope everyone enjoys it.

2009: Hehe funny monkey, what’s code?
2023: I should’ve seen this coming.
Same boat lol
Yeah
"Maybe manager wanna write goddamn login page himself."
As someone with a pushy manager who has no technical experience, I fucking felt that line.
Use that kind of language in front of a manager, he’ll make you feel a sidewalk curve
@@corey-bird3489how do the corporate boots taste?
@@corey-bird3489 Hey man, code monkey not crazy, just proud.
This is actually a golden opportunity. See what you can get away with. Pretend a week of work takes a month. That sort of thing.
almost 15 years later and this still rings as true as it ever did.
I just heard this song for the first time yesterday, and man did it make me glad I chose to go into therapy instead of continuing with my computer science major
@@andrewdorsey1237 after a decade in this industry I could probably use some therapy. Are you taking new clients?
@@BenGlasser79 haha, nah i'm still in college

@@BenGlasser79, 12y and still going. The secret is to switch it up and try new things. If you let curiosity die, this industry is really boring and lacking of purpose, I agree. But the friends you make along the way make it worth it.
I have been a developer for 16 years and this is pretty much the way it is. Especially in big orgs.
What companies? Are startips any better?
Yes strartups are way exciting.
No way, now it seems i would not like to be a developer. ))::::
All the receptionists are hot?
sadly it's true for most all jobs these days though. I sometimes wish i had gone into coding because at least when i was younger i could have done well at it, and made a lot more money than i do now (just shows how little i make now) but then i think how the climate in the workplace is the same, you get berated for not performing at the level of the one top guy who doesn't sleep and takes work home with him every day
Code monkey for 15 years. Got the girl and more peanuts. Everything else stayed the same.
Dang!!! Well done! :D
Lucky bastard
It's a treadmill. I pity you.
Singing "Code Monkey think someday he have everything even pretty girl like you" always makes me tear up.
It does.
I choke up everytime I sing those lyrics.
Man I started to learn to code back in like late 2020 and coming back to this song thanks to the show "Code Monkey" I realize that uuuhhh yeah its accurate. As a kid, I only understood the romantical aspect but as a programmer I laughed at the "Maybe manager want to write goddamn log-in page himself." Amazing song.
Same as it ever was. 33 years doing this. My first programming gig paid $8/hour. TBF I'm doing much better now, and you could actually live independently on $8/hour back then. Not in luxury or anything, but a decent apartment was easily in reach.
But yeah, at many places there's a lot of second guessing of what you do by people who couldn't even start your editor/IDE but seem to have opinions on your work. "Why can't it work as well as $FOO does it?" "Um, because $FOO has a team of 45 developers working on it, and all I have is me and a part time intern?"
Honestly, you don't need to be a code writer for this to apply... basically any desk job counts... I was coding in '09 but didn't pursue it as a career, work in accounting instead... still works...

I would love to see the manager to write the goddam log-in page himself it would be the laughing stock of the dev team for a whole month.

@@michaelmelaragni1668 Wasn't good enough to keep me. Making 6 figures now
Wow, I first listened to this song in High School and just thought it was catchy. Now I realize that I can relate to this a hell of a whole lot.
Just the opposite. Was a programmer I liked it at first, but it's increasingly rubbed me the wrong way, and it feels toxic to see this attitude normalized, that a woman who's made it quite clear that she's not interested still *should* be with some guy because he judges himself to be deserving or has "warm fuzzy secret heart" or whatnot. In TV shows, movies, etc, this is treated as a heartwarming scenario where the woman eventually "learns to love" the eminently deserving man. In the real world, what happens is known as stalking. This storyline shouldn't be celebrated.
It makes me want to write a song from the woman's perspective.
----------
Desk lemur try avoid code monkey
Pretend to make fake phone call
Code monkey still not taking hint
Want to hit head against wall
Desk lemur ask for private meeting
With boring manager Rob
She tell Rob she very uncomfortable
Getting hard to do job
Desk lemur think maybe monkey oughta recognize her bodily autonomy
Desk lemur is person. Not prize.
So hard to convey this. She tries!
Desk lemur think for herself!
Desk lemur has her own personal views!
Desk lemur not interested.
Warm secret heart not entitlement
Code money, take clue!

@@karenrobertsdottir4101 For crying out loud, do you SJWs have to ruin everything? As if entertainment was the source of all the world's problems. This isn't a serious song, it's meant to be funny while making a commentary on boring office life. Never once does it condone "stalking" or whatever baloney. In case you don't notice, the "code monkey" never gets the woman, he's still sad, bored, and lonely when the song ends, still wanting something that he can't have. Stop making things to be offended about when there are none existing.
@@LordofDiamondsMetal ". In case you don't notice, the "code monkey" never gets the woman, he's still sad, bored" - He still feels entitled to her because "he's a good guy" and keeps going after her despite her dismissing him. And people who listen to the song are encouraged to identify with him and cheer on this behavior.
That's not a good thing.
"For crying out loud, do you SJWs have to ruin everything?"
Yeah, sorry for making a big deal out of stalker-promoting media. I guess we just got tired of all the rape.
@@karenrobertsdottir4101 Not everybody who listens to music takes it seriously or feels "inspired" by the message it conveys, if there is any message. I would never in a million years listen to this song and feel inspired to stalk and rape someone from it. I listen to death metal, with lyrics about rape and murder all the time, but do I ever do any of those things? No, and neither do the vast, VAST majority of people who listen to such music. Why? Because we recognize that those things are wrong, and also because we recognize that the artists who write about it aren't serious. Death metal lyricism is incredibly blunt and if there is rape in it, it's obvious. In this song, I have never seen rape or stalking and even if you held a gun to my head and demanded that I search for it, I still wouldn't find it.
The code monkey is an immature man. I was the same way that you described once: I felt "entitled" to a girl and got fiercely jealous of anyone else who tried to get with her with some degree of success. I was 15 then. I was an immature kid. I'm older now and look back on that part of my life with much regret. But it's still a natural part of human nature to fantasize. Men do it. Women do it. I imagine any sentient being capable of feeling sexual attraction does it. But it's only the sick fucks that act on it and actually rape or stalk people. So if you think that this song - OF ALL SONGS - is the cause of some people becoming stalkers and rapists, then you need to back off, rethink things, and realize that some people just want to enjoy good music.
@@karenrobertsdottir4101 this is an unofficial music video. This song had nothing to do with love lmao. It’s just about a dude with a shit job

God warned you
Not to be pedantic, but that graph shows his output rising
Shows how incompetent management is, huh?
Yes it seems "output" should have been on the vertical axis, and the bottom axis should have been "time" :) That way it would show his productivity decreasing which would fit the song. But currently it's not a graph about output over time, it simply shows that his output is greatest when his dilligence is lowest :D
Stop feeding the troll, and he'll go away.
Quick dial 911 Chris just admitting to fondling little kids...wait or healing children...or ...I should have stayed in school :(
His output is highest when his diligence is lowest. It is saying that we he stops caring about doing good work and just starts doing what he is told, that management believes he is generating more output, when in reality he is just building up tech-debt.

This deserves way more views.

"Code monkey not say it out loud" as he destroys the office

There was so much great content in the 2000's this got overlooked.

That was lovely. Every time he snapped back to reality, I thought, "Awww."
Johnathan Coulton hits me right in the heart with this song. There's a lot of people out there that just ignore the people who are "code monkeys". C'mon world, we need loving too!
Got my first professional programming gig 33 years ago. Today I found myself thrown back to those days while scripting an integration with ServiceNow and found this vid after searching for the song as some background music. The song is still spot-on, and your animation is great. (And yes - the code monkey does eventually get the girl)
After she's fat and run through by 100+ guys.
This is my life. Makes you wonder if its worth what's at the end of the road of a Masters degree. It can be very depressing. However, you can't help but laugh about it after seeing this video. Its not just me, but millions. All of us just trying to make it. Can't take ourselves too seriously. Great song and video to wake up to.
Nest Of Plutons as an almost 30 year old man who never went to college and works at Autozone for $13 an hour I’d say yeah, a masters is probably worth it.
Brb, gonna eat a bullet.
As a personal trainer who did a 6 month certification, trains people out of his home gym, and makes 55k per year despite literally only working 2-3 hours per day - definitely doubt it's worth it.
For me I do freelance media marketing...I can make a lot when I’m on the ball but to be honest, finding clients and communicating with them requires a lot of self-discipline....and working from home is so much harder than people think.
For software engineering, that masters degree isn't worthwhile unless you really like what you're doing in school.
Just get a remote job and work from home
This song makes me sad in a good way
Can relate. My boss often refers to me a s"Script Monkey" because I saved his mornings by writing a data replication script eliminating him having to get up EVERY morning to monitor at like 3 AM... (I take the term as one of endearment now, as he was a GOOD boss, though). It's what I specialize in, and this song is just so fun and perfect.
My highschool IT teacher show this to us. He said it was to help prepare us for working.
I love how Jonathan Coulton songs are so upbeat and sad at the same time.

despite the fact that i'm getting a computer engineering degree in a week, this song still makes me wonder if entering the industry is worth it
lol
Don't worry, you're not making a mistake. Every industry sucks equally
stick with it. at least in the usa all of the skilled software engineers are working from home and making great money, and you'll definitely have the opportunity to work on interesting projects.
I remember hearing this song in the 07's and never really noticed the lyrics.

My prof literally used the lyrics of this song in a 2 second year CompSci course assignment and left this link as a comment lol
I am not a computer
I am not even in the real world yet
I am still in college getting a psych degree
This song still relates tome a lot . I find every aspect very true. I drink coffee to keep up with school work .Sometines homework or exams get so piled up I have to stay up really late and even not sleep to study for it .
I end up giving up my hobby and even some of my friendship because I have to study for exams. and I just slowly find out I barely do anything else other than in the library or finding a career path ...and crying
No times for personal relationships other than chatting through facebook . I think most of my friends are the same since we both have really high load of course work
And know that life is going to b e like that after having a job .
WE are all code monkeys
Its basically the same for a lot of countries though . For a lot of Asian country that values work it could be harder .basically in order to get money most of time you have to work hard for the boss to like you so you can stay there .and unless you worked more than enough money the choices you have are quiet little in a company (unless you have another better company to back you up ).Which is kind of sad because we need money to live, and while working for money we are not necessarily "living " ,more like trying to survive
linvy kriselle That's why i like my vagabond idea. Gas stations have WiFi and power outlets, every town has temp work, and if you go somewhere foreign you can get free money and food by telling stories of your homeland and those you've been through as per bardic tradition!
Though i'm probably just going to learn languages and be a translator, hopefully, so that constant mobility is inherent to the job.
+linvy kriselle In my opinion, it get's MUCH better when you get a job compared to college. Either do college more slowly and relax a bit or go fast and just keep telling yourself it will be worth it when you get a sweet job.
+Someguy583 Hey, someone that thinks like me. I've been with that idea around since I was 8 and I saw people working. I don't want to work, I want to see the world

This is a really well done video :) I love how you included a few of your own jokes to make it even funnier.
Is it bad that this is basically my life goal.
Well, I suppose not. Everyone has their own aspirations, and you're just as entitled to your own as I am to mine. I must say it's quite odd if your life goal is to be making "peanuts" in terms of money at your job, though.
