SOLUTION: Remove SD card; Have the display flipped up so it does not cover the back of the camera; Set clean HDMI output in FHD (not 4K); I am already streaming 3+ hours (with dummy battery powered via USB); I hope this helps you too.
Hi Jozef. I am using this setup but with elgato camlink capture usb card, and it overheat, but when i used it with the USB Canon Eos Utility, does not overheat. Do you know if the issue is the elgato camlink?
@@AlejandroCsomeOk I am also using 4K Elgato and it works fine. Which part overheats for you? The Elgato or camera? Maybe it's worth to reset the camera and set everything from scratch
Also working for streaming for hours in my case - even 6 hours in a row. Sadly today tried to use it to record regular video for the first time - was shocked at how BAD the overheating problem is. In Manual mode with display flipped and power adapter (no battery), 1080p in 50fps with autofocus overheats the camera after 10 minutes!!!!! I hope this is guaranteed case. I have an idea in mind to fix it, but the solution is ugly: Atache a big passive cooler to the back. Have to look for a heat-conducting glue to do so. This is ridiculous. Ok, I only use it with the flipped display. Seems like a legit fix, if it works... No idea whether I violate my guarantee by doing so. If the support receives it this way they should feel ashamed. I wonder whether a new firmware fixed it by now... no new firmware. Funny. And I was wondering why it was always blinking during Livestream all the time... at least it works in live stream or actually it is not live it is prerecording tutorials in OBS Studio with a capture card just fine...
For those of you concerned by this for streaming using a dummy battery, don't be. The flashing icon will show after 1-2 hours when using the dummy battery into Cam Link, but it's not actually overheating. The advanced manual for the m200 on page 485 says that when this icon shows up, the camera will automatically shut down after 3 minutes. It doesn't, you can run this thing for as long as you want. The camera is not hot at all and it's a false warning. Other people have tested this as well. As for recording with a battery, I have no idea, I don't use it for that.
Is this your experience? I also use a dummy battery and, like you said, the icon starts flashing, but it doesn't shut down. the camera does feel "hot" or "warm" but I can't tell what's really considered dangerously hot. It does go on for quite a bit, I think I ran it last night in this set up for 2 hours or so. I'm just wondering if it'll break over time if I keep this up.
@@IsaacKLee Yes, there is a slight warm feeling around the battery area, but not hot on mine. I have run it for hours at a time now in the week that I got it and I know many streamers used this setup to stream every day for months/years.
@@FloppySwordGaming wonderful, thanks for sharing. I've been browsing for a small cooling fan to attach to it since last night. haha. I might still do it for a good measure.
I am in the same situation, yesterday went to do a 4k timelapse with my m200, and overheated. I love the pictures from this camera, but that is about all it's now good for. I am thinking about never buying a canon camera ever again.
The only thing I've found that kind of works with this camera for recording video is shooting in the "auto" camera mode, not movie mode, and not the manual camera mode. It will record until 30 mins and stop. Once you start to record again it will allow you to do so without overheating. I've tested this out for the 3 days getting roughly 2 hrs out of it before the battery died. With that being said, this is a huge fail on canon's part. I mean a camera that's over $500 that overheats in such a short time. In 4k I was only able to get roughly 7-9 mins out it before it overheated. I mean the Sx740 can record without overheating and in 4k and that's a $350 camera. If you are just getting into photography and videography and or starting a UA-cam channel I'd say go with the sx740, or the rebel t7i, or the m50. I'm definitely returning it back to Best Buy! I should've just kept the Rebel t7, just hate the focus on that camera. I'm so disappointed because I was looking forward to using this camera to create content, and live stream.
Possible solution: I had the same issue while in video mode, I took the SD Card out AND switched it to Picture mode, and I have not had any overheating shut offs since. The one unconfirmed con is you may not be streaming/recording with your video settings as you are technically using picture mode. But idk looks smooth to me.
Hey brother. I feel your frustration. I absolutely understand. I have this camera and I use it for my drum videos. Everytime I hit record, I gotta cross my fingers hoping it doesn't overheat while I'm playing. Im just as upset at canon as you are. Problem for me is, my sweetheart girlfriend got me this camera for Christmas. And I can't complain cuz it would feel so wrong. How could canon do this to us. Best we can do is be patient and move on to find that better camera
I didn’t do this to look up cons and wish i would ... my camera over heated in like 10 min next to ring light the quality for video and pic is really good but that was sooo bad i returned after 2nd day and found this video and wished i would of seen before i over hyped my self to get it and tho actually get it
Mine overhead in 4k after about 5 mins (just on for 2 minutes and after 3 minutes and 9 seconds of recording) I haven’t tried streaming or 1080p 6fps but 1080p 30 fps for 30 minutes of recording and nothing bad.
I use it fine and I recommend that you use a continuous power supply and run raw HDMI to your cam link/capture card. I run it at 4K and it seems fine. It seems to me your problem is battery related.

I am using it for B-roll shots and it works just fine :)
You need to put 1080P 29 FPS. If you use 60 fps its overheating. I discover that today.
If you need to film B roll for more then 30 minutes, your sd cards hate you.
