You are literally the only person that explained the entire machine. The damper was a mystery until now. And the information box. Thank you!! Proper body mechanics too. Thank you. Ps...I love the rowing machine!!
Shane - Thanks once again. I’m 69 years old and I’ve been rowing on my Concept2 since the beginning of COVID, and your videos and guidance are what has kept my technique and commitment to rowing strong. Keep up the awesome coaching!
I think it can make it easier to explain rowing technique, and why it is so complicated, if you bring it back to actually rowing a shell (or scull) on a river. You are putting the oar in the water, pulling it back, lifting it out, and returning back to the front position. Once you've put the oar in the water, you have to maintain that oar at the same position through the entire pull. If you lift the handle, like to go over your knees, the oar would dip in the water, called "catching a crab", with enough force that it can literally throw a man from a boat. (Look up some "crew catching a crab" compilations). Once you are all the way back, you pull the oar out of the water and return it forward (without reinserting it) until the beginning of your next stroke. Pretty much everything in the technique is to maximize the power of your pull while maintaining the oar position.
Okay seriously this is so concise and helpful! There ARE a lot of videos out there that feel so complicated to emulate. This is exactly what I was looking for. So grateful!
Thanks for the great content. I hate going to the gym but I still wanted a high intensity, low impact workout and thanks to your videos rowing seemed like the perfect fit. Just got my concept 2 today and did my first 5 minute session using this video as a guide. I’m sure my form was a bit messy but I’m looking forward to getting better!
started going to the gym 3 days a week over the last month found rower to be the most amazing feeling! Was completely guessing of form. This helped alot! Now on the market for a home rower since the gym is 70 miles away. Ill still go for the weights but im hooked and need that at home
Thanks for the video. I’ve been watching your channel for about a month now and finally have my own Concept 2 because of you. Great solid machine and it’s super smooth. I’m still trying to get the movements down. I feel like I’m lifting my arms over my knees on the return portion. Will watch this again until I get it right. Thanks again and your video was very helpful. Later.
Thank you for this video! This video gave me the confidence I needed to try the rowing machine for the first time at my gym last week, and I love it!! I've already incorporated it into my workouts, and I prefer it so much more than the treadmill and elliptical (which I always avoid hehe..)
I just finished my 2nd training session on the “Technogym “ rowing machine for 40 minutes and my plan yesterday and today was to go over the basics of rowing and Thxs to you DH I felt like I really did some damage. I can wait to go back, by the way I felt there like a DH. And it’s a great feeling. I think this training is going to be a great part on my improvements as a cyclist. I’m so happy about it. Thxs all to you and your valuable information that I appreciate a lot. Now there’s a DH. at Lifetime in Wynnewood, PA.
Thank you very much for this video. We bought the same rower you have (a great coincidence) to help us get healthier, but I wanted to ensure we are doing the movement properly. Very happy I clicked on your video! We're very excited on our new journey. :-)
I really like that you added PURPOSE and PLAN. I run into that with people "Learning how to use a computer". If you know what you want to DO with it, you'll learn what you need to know and you'll get there. Currently, I have days that I work on the rower for 10 minutes and other days I work towards 2k meters. Each seems to have its place, and the first time I tried to get to 2k and succeeded I was on top of the world!
7:00 i'm the opposite.. Rowing is fun. I set a goal and then reach it and am like 'hmm.. Let's go a little further' It helps when the machine shows time, distance and calories burned.. I want to end at a round number, but there are 3, so always something to round up haha
Today was my first time trying my new rowing machine, and also my first time watching a Dark Horse video. Subbed! And thanks for this intro vid. Helped a lot.
This should be on a loop by the ergs at my gym. The things I see around me on the ergs...Great you mention the drag factor-EVERYONE at my gym uses "10". Old ladies to skinny teenagers all on 10, otherwise it's not a real workout eh? :) Quality content!
Ok, I asked a question on the 1.30minute workout video about the damper... But you can forget that, I should have just watched this. Now I know what the damper does 👍 thanks
Thanks so much. Just getting started and never worked on a rowing machine. Just what I needed to learn on the Concept 2. Coming back soon! Starting with basics. Absolutely helpful!
Our YMCA has come Concept2 machines and for the past few weeks I've been spending more time on them, usually prior to some weight training. After watching a few videos in this series I've been feeling the workouts a LOT more, almost like after a long run back in high school cross country, but without the crippling tendinitis and sciatic pain. Some real jelly legs going on. I think that means I'm starting to do it right? I'm about ready to graduate just from a base 20 minutes to some actual structured workouts. Nice. This is helpful content.
Hello Shane, I've just had an argument with my sister on where are the physical effects of rowing-workouts: I said one of the main effects is on the legs besides shoulders and back. She said there are absolutely no effects on the legs and exclusively shoulders and back. Who is right?
I am looking into a row machine due to an injury occurred after a car accident. retrolisthesis of L3 or L4 and my core is definitely weaken... Hopefully this can ease some strength into my core and alleviate my back pains...
I have one and it's ...better? It is a little better but my butt still hurts if I haven't been on the rower in a while. I think you just acclimate to the seat after a while, pad or not.
I have a NordicTrack rower and there is no resistance with the leg push. I just fly backwards stop then there is resistance when I pull. Is this at all normal?
Thanks for the video! I want to buy a rowing machine (a First Degree Fluid Rower). Does it make sense to buy a seat back add-on to help me with the correct posture? It seems to me that it could help me keep a straight back?
Started a 45 workout, no rest periods, about 30s/m at around a 5 intensity setting. Feels fine after a few weeks. Thoughts as to value of this workout? Thx
Question. I’m built like a football player, but have, over the years gotten a dad bod to include a belly. So, should I widen my legs to allow room for my belly, or keep my thighs together and stop when belly hits the thighs. I hope that makes sense.
Do i want to push with 100% effort, then adjust my damper and SPM to suit my workout? Say i wanted to row for 30mins time. I have a very strong deadlift and leg power, but without focusing on being very explosive and driving hard with my legs, I always feel im chasing the tension, and i dont feel anything in my legs because i have to go through 30% of my motion to achieve tension. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, and it feel like a stupid question. Its not like you would give 100% effort every strike if you were trying to jog. But with spm and damper adjustments it feeling like 100% effort would work, as long as my strokes are slow enough to maintain my breathing/heart rate. Thanks
I just wanna does the machine concept 2 cut on automatically after you start rowing or is there a start button.. I think the one at my gym is broke or I don't know what I'm doing...it's only been a few years smh
you should brace your spine (using your abs) at all times to varying degrees of intensity (source: How to become a supple leopard) even when sitting they should be working slightly.
Good video... I just did it the first time and did 1:28 for 500m. I'm a big strong guy, what should I set the damper to if I want to go as fast as possible?
*not a doctor (consult yours). I looked at a lot of info before starting due to my lower back pain (muscles though) and the takeaway was that if you do this with correct form it will strengthen your back and be an improvement. Seems there's only a little stretch at the forward part of the stroke which you could minimize and the rest is in your hips. I'd say slowly try the motion at a gym and see how it feels. Or emulate the motion on your floor. But a little more motion in my core is feeling better already. Good luck.
I like the tank tops hanging up in the background. It makes me think you workout SO HARD you need to have shirts close by to change into a clean one after the one you're wearing just gets completely drenched in sweat.
Then you just do what you can - anything is better than nothing 👍 I find that pushing my heels inwards make my knees point outwards very slightly which provides a little extra room for my belly
This video should be included with every new rower. Thank you.
You are literally the only person that explained the entire machine. The damper was a mystery until now. And the information box. Thank you!! Proper body mechanics too. Thank you. Ps...I love the rowing machine!!
Did you lose weight?
Shane - Thanks once again. I’m 69 years old and I’ve been rowing on my Concept2 since the beginning of COVID, and your videos and guidance are what has kept my technique and commitment to rowing strong. Keep up the awesome coaching!
I'm a beginner indoor rower. Thank you for explaining everything. It's really helped me a lot.

Works perfectly. I have been using this product for a month and I have started seeing the difference in my weight

I was literally sitting on the rowing machine looking for a quick tutorial. Thank you for giving me the sweet and simple explanation!
Thank you for this video! This video gave me the confidence I needed to try the rowing machine for the first time at my gym last week, and I love it!! I've already incorporated it into my workouts, and I prefer it so much more than the treadmill and elliptical (which I always avoid hehe..)

I found this video really helpful and really clear - thank you!

AWESOME review, I keep going back to analyze my technique. Thank-you
Just started a few days ago and this is what I needed. Been looking for a week now. Thank you!🙏
I’ve been doing this wrong for years. No wonder why I hate it. Can’t wait to get back into the gym and fix this!!
Very nice. You could talk about breathing too. Important topic
Our new work building's Gym has 2 Concept 2 rowers. Nice video.
Thank you so much. Great explanation of the rowing stroke. Just ordered my Concept2. Can’t wait to get started.

Ha! That's why we make it Philip. We'd love it if you pass this one along so everyone else can find it.
This is a great video. I just dusted off my old Model C and am starting back up.
jUST GOT A ROWER AND THIS HELPS SOOO MUCH. THANK YOU,
Agree - a plan is important.
Great video

Just what I needed thx
Great video! Just got a rowing machine and my knees are killing me-of course I was doing it incorrectly. Your videos will be a great tool
Thank you 🎉
Great ! Thank you !
Great video and explanation! I'm sharing this with my teenager today as its the best one I've seen! You should be getting paid by Concept! Haha!
Thanks that was so helpful
Thanks for the great info. Clear and easy to understand.

What about the breathing part? Any tips there?
Great video!
I followed your tips here and immediately shaved about a minute off my 500m time, just like that! Thanks for this video!
Thank You!!! Great video! 💗
Very inspirational! Thank You!
Wonderful videos, I am loving them all
Great video thank you
Thank You! I learnt a lot from you !

Great. Thanks.
Very welcome John .
Good concept for a video!
Any modifications for shorter folks to try to get better numbers from a gaming / CrossFit perspective?
I am looking into a row machine due to an injury occurred after a car accident. retrolisthesis of L3 or L4 and my core is definitely weaken... Hopefully this can ease some strength into my core and alleviate my back pains...
Thanks man! Much appreciate it thumbs up and subscriber ..cheers bro
Aww ya. Welcome to the family!
Best 2 gym machines : treadmill and rowing machine. Hands down imo:)
Is it natural for the heels to come up when returning to the catch?? Should the heels always be in contact with the rower??
Do you have any tips for loose foot straps? All the straps at my gym loosen after about 5 minutes of rowing.
Is this good for a hydronic rower
Do you have an opinion on the optional seat pad that can be bought for the Concept II?
I have one and it's ...better? It is a little better but my butt still hurts if I haven't been on the rower in a while. I think you just acclimate to the seat after a while, pad or not.
Great information. Is there a "STRAVA" like website or will I have to take a pic with phone of the console info to collect data
Check out ErgData as an app to at least track your Data
hello. A question about shin posture. Should I always keep my shins vertical when I'm in a drive position?
Hello , what kind of shoes do you recommend using the concept 2 rowing machine? Minimalist shoes, training shoes, running ECT? Thanks in advance
What's up with those rowers that have stretchers/pedals that move?
I have a NordicTrack rower and there is no resistance with the leg push. I just fly backwards stop then there is resistance when I pull. Is this at all normal?

Heels, do i keep heels down no matter what? Even with low ankle mobility?
I watched indoor rowing competitions and most rowers lift the heel.
Started a 45 workout, no rest periods, about 30s/m at around a 5 intensity setting. Feels fine after a few weeks. Thoughts as to value of this workout? Thx

I just wanna does the machine concept 2 cut on automatically after you start rowing or is there a start button.. I think the one at my gym is broke or I don't know what I'm doing...it's only been a few years smh
Probably there's no battery in the display and it will only come on when you are pulling the handle. I hate that.
@@DagnyKight yes it was the battery thanks
Please elaborate on bracing gut for how long and when to release it. Or do we hold the gut in the whol session ?

Is rowing better than running?
I desperately need a "Fire & Ice" meme! lol
Resistance - I’m 6 ft 250lb a lot of muscle. Trying to get a good 2km time. What resistance should I chose 1-10 to get the best time ? Concept II
barnetthejosh Recommend between 4 and 5 setting based on my experience. Gives a good feel for being in a boat.
I cant run anymore because of toe problem. Will rowing give me a great cardio workout and more?
What's a good amount of time to start with?
20 minutes at a steady state (heart rate between 148-156). Once you get more comfortable you should aim for 40 minutes
I had a slipped disc some years back and practically no pain now. Could I start rowing?
