- The M54B30 cylinder head gets a checkup and refresh- mostly to make sure it'll hold up for the season.
This was my first proper cylinder head job, and I learned a couple things along the way:
-Be careful with valve guides, they can be bent with too much force
-If it's already working, it probably doesn't need fixing
-Valve lapping isn't very effective, and is very time consuming
Yes, I could have gone to a machine shop, but this would have been out of my budget for this season- plus, it just needs to last for the summer. When I run more events and discover what upgrades are worth it, I can plan out upgraded valves, springs, lifters, and cams. Nonetheless, this whole process was a valuable learning experience, and it's probably for the better I didn't have thousands of dollars of new parts on the line.
If you know what you are doing porting you will always get gains in porting a cylinder head, even if you just round off and smooth off the sharp edges.
True, I was pressed for time so I didn't want to spend too long on it. I have an extra cylinder head I may build up into a proper race head while this one is running.
great series. what's the chemical you used in the tub for cleaning the head?
Simple green, nontoxic and seems to work well
What fluid are you use to clean this parts ? :o
Did you install the head with it warped? Or did you get it machined flat?
I installed it as is. For longevity, it would have been best to do that, but this is not supposed to be a long term rebuild.
156k and it doesn't burn any oil but I think it's time for mine to stop smoking it's mayo.
