  • I put together the short block with new JE forged pistons!
I'm also am using ARP rod bolts. Crank and rods are stock- these are strong enough to begin with. ARP head studs top it off for some extra clamping force.
    Build specs:
-JE forged pistons (2618 alloy 99.75mm)
    -ARP2000 11mm head studs
    -King rod & crank bearings
    -Cometic 1.2mm head gaskets
    Everything else is reconditioned/rebuilt.
The machine shop did a deck and resurface on the block and heads, bore & hone with a torque plate, as well as a valve job, crank polish, and flywheel resurface. Some minor issues came up that needed addressing, mostly with the pistons.
It's tempting to go all out and do a closed deck conversion with H beam rods, but at the end of the day, this is my daily, it can't cost $30k to build- and it's also got a 5 speed that, while stronger than the early WRX 5 speed, cannot handle excessive power.

Can you verify where the o-rings with grooves go. Some of the black ones have grooves some don't.

Nice video. Which ARP head studs did you opt for, the ARP2000s or the Custom AGE 625+?

Mate how much does it cost to rebuild an stock engine and put short block?

What material pistons did you use? 2618? Thanks

Yep, it's really the only option I could find for forged pistons. My only gripe is the higher thermal expansion rate, meaning I have a bit of piston slap on cold start.

@@rainvillecreative5410 yeah they will do that lol. Here in the UK the 2618 piston is only for race applications or 500hp and over. The 4032 piston is the one to use, but if its the only one available fair enough. It also highly recommended you have in cylinder walls close decked. Due to head gasket failure and cylinder wall cracking. Especially over 400hp applications. Still, your build, your way. Really informative and I hope it lasts a long time. 🙏 👍

@@christopheredwards357 What is close decking? I was sure to have them use a torque plate, if that's relevant. I'm still around 320 HP at the crank so it's not being pushed really at all, maybe one day I'll go for 400 but for now it's enough to handle keeping the rest of the car in good shape.

@@rainvillecreative5410 close deck inserts are pressed between the cylinder wall and outside of block to give extra strength at the point of compression. The ej257 has very thin cylinder walls and are renowned for cracking under cylinder pressure and or detonation. They also tend to flex (distort) due to time/ cylinder pressure and heat cycles causing head gasket issues. In general, it is rare for this to happen to cars running under 400hp (crank) or under 1.5bar boost pressure. But go over these levels and you increase the risk. Hope this helps.

@@christopheredwards357 Ah yes, I am familiar with that, I've heard them called closed deck conversions. I could have paid $350 to have my block converted, but the way I saw it, if I go 400+ hp, I'll need the 6 speed swap conversion. So too much expense for a 15 year old Legacy.
