Hey, just a heads up don’t but the usb version of the mg12 I have the mg10xu and it has an extreme amount of usb noise that shows up in the usb audio input, it comes in and out extremely frequently and it’s not worth it. Just letting you know. I regret buying the mixer now but just a heads up
kevin turner well I think he doesn’t really need the x32, he mostly plays at weddings and party’s. x32 is more for larger stages and bands that require effects delay’s- more advanced stuff. Also as I’ve seen he uses active JBL’s srx and similar product line
Few things that i may consider doing differently, 1. Why not put the furman on top of everything, this way you can use the pop-up lights for the mixer controls 2. Why not use angled XLR connectors on the mixer to save some space 3. Why don't you use some 2U or 3U rack drawers instead of plastic containers, looks way mor clean Nice setup though...stay safe, cheers
4. Use locking power cables to the mixer and driverack. 5. Puting power and signal in/out on the Same please so you can make combi cables with signal and power to the dj set and speakers
I love your drive, enthusiasm and business savvy. It reminds me of myself when I was younger. Now, I just want the most lightweight, compact, easy to move system, but I LOVE watching your business grow and kick butt! Keep on keepin’ on Rick!!!
When building racks, lay the rack down on its back. The gear will then hang in place, and you can organize the gear easily without having to screw any of it down. Then flip it over on its front to do the wiring. (and when using two screws, use the bottom two)
That was an amazing idea and rack Rick. I usually just set up everything, dmx controller , mixer board, wireless mics, in the dj table, this looks way cleaner and more professional. Thanks
Thanks for the heart Rick. I was talking to a DJ pal I've known since 1981 yesterday and asked him if he watched your video's and he said yes. My first amp rack was in 1979 and I built it in my garage from 1/2" MDF board and painted it with flat black rustoleum. Had a Phase Linear 400 in it and Heathkit electronic crossover - I don't remember what else. Did have a PVC receptacle in the top of it. Piece of 1-1/4" PVC fit into it. I took that piece of 1-1/4" sch 40 PVC and heated the end and formed into a question mark. Put a mirror ball motor on the top and hung a 12" mirror ball from the amp rack pole mount. Anyway, my point here is that some of us mix, some MC, some do video, and some design/build. It's interesting watching you on your journey. Takes me back in a good way to the good parts of building and learning. There are always haters, naysayers and self-ordained keyboard experts out there - disregard that for what it is - it never goes away. Good thing Thomas Edison & Walt Disney didn't listen to them - or General Dynamics when we built the F-16. :) PS: Now I own 50,000 watts of Crown's & JBL Vertec's in the main PA and another 10KW for the DJ system. Been testing the Chauvet XpressRack-1024 and really like it. It will be perfect for the wireless uplights. Haven't figured out what the 4x "Zones" are used for yet?
I think I would add 90 degree XLR adaptors instead of just straight ones when you come to add them just to reduce cable stress but other than that, looks good
You might get some more space if you turn the sliding shelf upside down like you did the shelf at the bottom. As others have mentioned though, right-angle XLRs could be beneficial as well, especially since they are only coming from the back of your case. I do wonder about the use of the PowerCon connector vs. using regular Edison plugs, but I suppose that is a personal preference. If you are going to be transporting this to and from gigs, I highly recommend that you install the rest of the rack screws. If you do decide to only use two screws, however, I recommend using the bottom screws rather than the top screws. It holds the equipment more securely. Thanks for showing your rig!
Hey Rick, I've loved seeing you grow over the years. A couple thoughts came to mind: 1) Might want to add something heavier to the bottom of the rack, because it seems a bit top heavy and could tip while rolling. Although you're using powered speakers, might be beneficial to have an amplifier at the bottom of the rack. 2) Rather than bins, might want to put in a couple of drawers to keep things organized. 3) Use right angled connectors on the mixer to reduce stress on cables and clear up some space. Been loving the content and looking forward to seeing you grow!
Hey Rick. Nice Job. I'm sitting on a video of my setup. Glad to see I was on the right path when I started my build. Can't wait to get your comments when I post it. Please don't hold back. Stay safe man.
Really like the component choices. For me, this rack would be too large. It would probably fit into an 8u but that’s really just personal taste. I’d also put the power conditioner on top so the lights shine on the mixer. The only other suggestion would be to put your stereo input from the dj mixer into one of the 1/4” trs stereo channels on the yamaha. One fader, one eq and it’s designed for line level.
I love this set up even to just have it home and listen to music or have your kids birthdays,Im about to start buying these little by little,I have the pioneer ddjflx10 with the case
Great video. Suggestion move your patch ports behind the Dbx so you don't need any extra cords. They also sell a rack mount power strip with extenders to plug in to your fermin. Maybe a port for your Donner dongle on the patch piece, so no obstruction for signal. Great job. You have great ideas.
Looks nice, Rick. They do make rack mounted deep drawers for the cables instead of using plastic bins if you wanted to go that. We use them all the time on the jobs we do.
True. Yeah we use them a lot for the custom trailers we do. We did one for Tim Mcgraw (not a country music fan but still cool to do) not to long ago. Had to wire his mobile gym he takes on tour. We have another one to do for him but not sure if it's still gunna happen with all this going on now. But yeah, bins would be easier to take out never thought about that.
Absolutely loved the video!! Definitely recommend an x32 rack. Got mine for $600 and if that's too expense get the xr12 which is like $200 and 12 inputs
I used to wheel around cases like this but venue size .. and gig style meant I had a ton of money sat in equipment I used maybe once a month. Now I just use a component PA which suits everything from a small bar to a thousand people outside. I use a digital mixer (very compact and can even piggy back the built in Wi-Fi to run my DMX) and most of the outboard gear in soft bags. For a small gig .. all of it, including lighting, fits in a station wagon and I only need a trailer for bigger venues. Personal choice I suppose but most of the time I work alone and all these big cases are just not practical.
You should really look at a behringer x18 for your mixer, it’s an incredible rack mount mixer and it’s all ran off an iPad! Along with plenty of inputs for any audio needs!
Okay now I begin my rack build... Adding a denon bluetooth receiver and a usb hub to mine as well. This is going to be a project for sure. I keep checking your video to see what I am missing... will keep you posted! Currently have on hand to mount: A dbx drive rackPA 2 , Alto stealth wireless system, shure blx wireless mic system, on order is the Gator 8U wheeled rack,Furman power conditioner, Denon bluetooth receiver, wireless router, xlr patchbay, along with misc stuff. Next order will be the roll out shelf, usb hub, misc cables usb and ethernet and some blanks if I need them. Wish me luck! Thanks man!
Awesome build! If you put a dab of hot glue on the bottom of the iec plug (NOT THE FACE WHERE THE PRONGS GO IN ^^ ) it will stay put untill you want it to come out and give it a good tug.
You should make a shelf with a place to store and charge the wireless DMX with maybe a power bank that will charge up during a gig and then it would charge the dongles during transport and storage
DJ Rick Web thanks DJ Rich Web. I am actually 13 years old in South Africa and we are in the middle of a 5 week total lockdown and these videos are the only thing keeping me sane at the moment I also subbed to the podcast and I recommend it to everyone who reads this.
I’d suggest getting a Berhinger XAir (one from that series) or some mixer with wireless control; it gives you more control and you don’t need a rack for it.
i would have gotten a rackmount digital mixer ala xr16 or xr18 instead of the analog desk. also i wanna see you haul that rack up some stairs by yourself
Hey Rick, love your videos man hope your staying safe in this crazy world with the corona virus and stuff like that man and my hair looks the same lol!
Great video man! I actually have an odyssey rack with the two covers that can be used as tables man on my channel... like u i like to keep everything organized and tidy anyways stay safe!
Thanks, Love the videos. Did you make a video about something like this but smaller and on a budget? I want to do something like that but half the size that I can put on top of a table.
very good, i need you to get with me on how to set up the router , im using the Behringer drive rack dcx 2498 and various models of the dcx family . i have 4 driveracks so im going to get 4 routers .
Nice build....but maybe you can put the ports to the front, so you dont have to open the back everytime...looks like you have just enough space above the mixer for the antennas (you got even more space if you using angled xlr on the mixer ;) )
Doesn’t those big racks kill your back loading then up into the van or onto a raised stage? I built mine year ago to be modular with a patch panel on top of every rack so nothing ever goes more than 8u and those were amp racks which are almost never used. But even so if you use one rack manufacturer - everything just stacks clean and you can be nice and modular. My current project is breaking down the old coffins into separates that can just sit on a table.
Can you get a patch port for the DMX transmitter to mount on the plate with the mic antennas? That way it's not deep inside the case and away from the power cables.
wouldn't the Yamaha TF-Rack Digital Mixer have been a much better (and space saving) option over that mixing board tho..? This case could've easily been accomplished at 12-14u at most but thanks for the suggestion on getting the outlet indicator..
Yeah but it cost significantly more. And I had the yamaha already vs having to buy that. And 18u was more for the height so that it functions as a table as well as a rack at events
@DJ RICK WEB, thinking the extra space in the rack you can fit the distro box so everything can plug in at the back? just a thought.... nice placement tho, just a little shift around to have things more better placed..
Hello rick love your vids. Stay safe and hope you are keeping well. Would you say it is hard to make your own flight case, i was thinking of making one for my light bars because i have all this time so?
I made the giant one for my big DJ booth. It takes a while to make it. It's not hard if you have carpentry skills. But cost wise unless your making a super large one it cost the same to just buy a pre built one. I priced out making this 18u case and it cost the same to just buy it already made
Question 🙋♂️ I’m new to rackmount equipment compared to just a home theatre receiver all in one amplifier. I’m looking to buy 5 QSC amplifiers (not sure if it’s a good quality brand) but I don’t know what type of preamp or equipment is required to be able to hook up all those amps with xlr wires.
Rick that is a great rig setup! Got a couple of questions: I found a rack mountable chauvet show express on Ebay for a good price. Can it run the new version of the software? If not what version do you use? Also, does it plug straight into your computer or can it stand alone with a router and an iPad? I'm tired of using my obey 40 and having to manipulate it. 2. I have an original dbx drive rack from my band days. Should I use it or get the new one? Any help is appreciated. Love your channel!
Nice rack Rick, but I'm curious about one thing. I'm assuming 1 & 2 are inputs from your controller? Why not use one of the stereo TRS channels, rather than taking 2 that could be used for additional mics?
Nice video. Maybe instead of getting the mg12fx look at getting a rackmount digital mixer in the future like the xair or presonus studio live 32 rack mounted. Then you have alot more control over eq and effects and compression
@@rjpimprov TBH I use the QU32 a handfull of times for live use and feel it is laking in features tbh. For the money I'd always go presonus just from the versatility. The rack mixer can be used as a DSnake if you end up getting a full console too which is awesome IMO
What up Rick? I notice you added a router and I know some consoles you can use the router to use it with an iPad or what have you, do you use it for anything else?
With smaller devices like your audio technica microphones, driverack, furman, etc. Do you think it's necessary to find rack extensions that would reach the rail in the back of the case for a better support?
Just left a comment saying the same. A x32 rack and cat6 remote snake would allow him to tuck the rack anywhere he needed to in a room and give him plenty of room for the bigger events hes been doing. In my opinion you can never have to meny spare channels but you can definitely not have enough
From where you gonna gonna get wifi from the netgear to where and one more thing i have the pioneer ddj-flx10 and the yamaha mg12xu i would like to get m-d80 which case would you recommend the one you have its too big to fit my suv
Question !!!??? Do the connectors have to be mounted in the rackmount from the front or from the back. I always mount them from behind. Then everything works properly. And they are easy to change or move. In the industry I see both ways. I wonder what you think of it?
@@DJRickWeb I'm not sure about that, because it is mounted from behind within various professional equipment. If, for example, search for audio snakes, you see that they are also mounted in different ways. this also applies to various you tube videos. In the Netherlands I see that both ways are used. It looks cleaner when there mounted from behind. (even in the Bunn dj booth ;) ) And it a lot easyer to replace them. The last think i`m curious about, is why they sent you al pre wired connect, that you have to take apart to install.? For example this is a Dutch proffecional company that makes audio rack panel, and everthing is connected from behind. shop.sommercable.com I`m not telling you doing it wrong, but it is maybe a eye opener, to do it the another way. Love your video: keep it up
One question that I have tried searching up and couldn't find any useful answers, What is the point of a DBX Drive rack (I think that's how you spell it) and why do you have it?
That's the 6 inch jumpers I mentioned. And it wont allow me to move it up any cus I still need the space to tap other mics in if need be at bigger productions
why don't you put the patch bay higher up so you wont need the extra cables and also wont need to bed right down everytime you want to plug something in
Great setup if you wanna be a bodybuilder. Work smarter, not harder. No elevator, and this type of setup is gonna need a few guys to move. Better be charging 5-7k after paying employees for a setup that normally needs one person.

Yep and that will possibly be a future modification depending on trials with the rack at events
I think you need to replace that Yamaha Mixer for a Behringer XR12. You got a Driverack Pa2 so why not go all the way Digital
Nice!
wouldn't the Yamaha TF-Rack Digital Mixer have been a much better (and space saving) option over that mixing board tho..? This case could've easily been accomplished at 12-14u at most but thanks for the suggestion on getting the outlet indicator..
Yeah but it cost significantly more. And I had the yamaha already vs having to buy that. And 18u was more for the height so that it functions as a table as well as a rack at events
Awesome
I priced out making this 18u case and it cost the same to just buy it already made
DJ Rick Web thanks for replying. Yeh my dad could help me make something up hopefully he had enough wood 😂.
Have you ever used a server rack to Mount dj equipment.
Nope....
Question 🙋♂️
I’m new to rackmount equipment compared to just a home theatre receiver all in one amplifier.
I’m looking to buy 5 QSC amplifiers (not sure if it’s a good quality brand) but I don’t know what type of preamp or equipment is required to be able to hook up all those amps with xlr wires.
Are you running the power cord from your controller into the firman on your rack?
Yes
Rick that is a great rig setup! Got a couple of questions:
I found a rack mountable chauvet show express on Ebay for a good price.
I pm you on facebook
@DJRickWeb what kind of drawer is your technca sitting on
Its not sitting on one
@DJRickWeb what's holding it? That's nice I need whatever it's on or holding it
The mics are bracketed in with the built in mic brackets
Nice rack Rick, but I'm curious about one thing. I'm assuming 1 & 2 are inputs from your controller? Why not use one of the stereo TRS channels, rather than taking 2 that could be used for additional mics?
Upgrade your mixer to a behringer xr18
Nice video. Maybe instead of getting the mg12fx look at getting a rackmount digital mixer in the future like the xair or presonus studio live 32 rack mounted. Then you have alot more control over eq and effects and compression
Very true.
If you could afford it get the Allen and heath qu rack. Otherwise the xair is ok. App is much better on the qu series. MUCH
@@rjpimprov TBH I use the QU32 a handfull of times for live use and feel it is laking in features tbh. For the money I'd always go presonus just from the versatility. The rack mixer can be used as a DSnake if you end up getting a full console too which is awesome IMO
Nick McPherson cool. Haven’t used the presonus. But I love the qu series. Even more than the sq series.
@@rjpimprov really over the sq! Just for my field in theatre i just wish it had scribble strips and more dcas
@rickwebb did you modify that bottom shelf? Mine hangs out a out 3 inches
I dont believe I did...
For the Netgear wifi...To get the wifi, don't you need a modem?
You dont need internet. All you need is a router to create a network.
@@DJRickWeb Is the Network for Serato?
For the drive rack
great set up no amps
Markertek carries all the screws ypu will ever need for rack builds!
Hey Rick, did you have to unscrew the nlfxpro XLR adapters to go through the panel?
Only the power con Edison plug. The xlrs pass through no problem
If you can’t find a bin of the proper size, you could always use a bag as well.
I have the bins already. You can actually see them in the thumbnail
What up Rick? I notice you added a router and I know some consoles you can use the router to use it with an iPad or what have you, do you use it for anything else?
Nope. Just for wireless control.
locking iec for power to drive rack maybe?
That would only work if the drive rack accepted a lock iec
@@DJRickWeb ah do they not fit that sucks was hoping they would for when I built my rack
They will fit but they wont lock because it's not a locking port
With smaller devices like your audio technica microphones, driverack, furman, etc. Do you think it's necessary to find rack extensions that would reach the rail in the back of the case for a better support?
I havent found them necessary
@@DJRickWeb sweet, thanks bro. always a big help!
Hey Rick why don’t you use linearay’s ?
what are you gonna use with the wash fx2s at smaller events like at friends farm
or pars
Refer to the recent Bunn booth video that explains how both booths work and what the purpose is
Do you think you'll go digital on the mixer side in the future? like an X32 Rack or something similar? Great rack btw!
Just left a comment saying the same. A x32 rack and cat6 remote snake would allow him to tuck the rack anywhere he needed to in a room and give him plenty of room for the bigger events hes been doing. In my opinion you can never have to meny spare channels but you can definitely not have enough
kevin turner yep. Running an X32 Rack and an m32 and a DL32 as my rig. Works great!
Will the rack be fine and not fall apart if you go a little over it’s rated maximum weight capacity
The pull out shelf?
From where you gonna gonna get wifi from the netgear to where and one more thing i have the pioneer ddj-flx10 and the yamaha mg12xu i would like to get m-d80 which case would you recommend the one you have its too big to fit my suv
Question !!!???
Do the connectors have to be mounted in the rackmount from the front or from the back. I always mount them from behind. Then everything works properly.
And they are easy to change or move.
In the industry I see both ways. I wonder what you think of it?
I always do it this way. And that's what I have seen standard in the high end production world.
@@DJRickWeb
I'm not sure about that, because it is mounted from behind within various professional equipment.
For example this is a Dutch proffecional company that makes audio rack panel, and everthing is connected from behind. shop.sommercable.com
I`m not telling you doing it wrong, but it is maybe a eye opener, to do it the another way.
Love your video:
keep it up
Rick I do I need a mixer if I have a DBXPA2? If so why?
I have a 16u and still don't have enough room. It don't help that I have an 8ch and 24ch 50 snakes wrapped up inside either.
One question that I have tried searching up and couldn't find any useful answers,
What is the point of a DBX Drive rack (I think that's how you spell it) and why do you have it?
Lman Drums Eq, crossovers, feedback suppression. It is an on the fly dsp to tune your setup with a microphone quickly.
HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH BRO
Haven't tried lifting cus it has wheels lol
Where's your 31 band equalizer? 🤔
Digital in the driverack
I want to make one but with one lid as dj controller case and behind the other lid a tv vertical. Please change my mind hahaha
why didn't you order right angled xlr cables for the mixing board... every 1u count
That's the 6 inch jumpers I mentioned. And it wont allow me to move it up any cus I still need the space to tap other mics in if need be at bigger productions
why don't you put the patch bay higher up so you wont need the extra cables and also wont need to bed right down everytime you want to plug something in
Cus plugging in at events I want the ports close to the ground so they stay close to the floor
Your build is looking sleek so far, but that 18U case is definitely an overkill. You'll end up wrecking your back once that rack fills up.
Great setup if you wanna be a bodybuilder. Work smarter, not harder. No elevator, and this type of setup is gonna need a few guys to move. Better be charging 5-7k after paying employees for a setup that normally needs one person.
I have 3 different DJ systems. This would never come to a wedding with stairs. Roll in roll out only. Setup in less than 10 minutes
18U=18 unit
