    When I was a kid in the Finger Lakes region of New York, back in the 1960's, our family dog ran free with all the other dogs in the neighborhood. There was a gang of kids and a gang of dogs. Each kid and dog played all day; swam laid in the sun, ate food off the ground and made sure they were home for dinner each evening, only to come out again after a good breakfast each morning. and start the day all over again. Our dogs ran in the fields, brought home rabbits to eat in the front yard.They swam in the lake and creek. They chased away missionaries and salesmen. They had a charmed life, as we ourselves did. Today I am sitting on my couch watching the neighbor go by with her german shepherd on a flashy plastic bejeweled leash, and a doggie raincoat. My own dog wont go out because it is raining and she is asleep on a pillow by the fire. All well and good but it gives me GREAT joy to see the truly charmed life that Cali has. l'm sure that if my own dog could watch your channel she would be waxing eloquent about her master, how she used to run free in the woods, sleep on the ground, climb the highest trees and go home only for dinner, half frozen and a muddy mess and now look at her, fat and sassy, sitting on the couch watching other people walk their dogs.

      My childhood was just as you described. It was amazing. My mom actually wrote a series of children's books based the Adventures of Dora Belle Lee, our beloved "Irish Cart Hound". She was the ringleader of the local gang if dogs. My Dad determined the breed from a picture he saw in National Geographic of an Irishman and his dog sitting on a old horsedrawn cart but, she was actually a border collie mix we got from the local pound. Those were wonderful days.

    Sweet Cali looks to keep herself entertained. It's great to have a best friend to spend time with! I have learned how to use some more of my father's tools. He's 84 and doesn't use them much anymore. I know from watching you that I have to take care of them. I'm greatful for everything I learned growing up on the farm. I was youngest so I always got stuck cleaning the small game. As I got older they taught me to clean bigger game. I appreciate you showing me such great things! I started watching this while thawing out a couple of small chuck steaks for supper, and wishing that I had some squirrel in the freezer - haven't had one of those in there for some 30 odd years. Can still taste it in my mind, though. My mouth was watering by the time you were eating your meal, and I had already grilled the steaks and we had eaten our supper. I would have added a snatch block at the bottom of the pulley system, to reduce the strength/power needed to lift the beams. But then, I am not as strong as you or as young! Cali is in her idea of dog heaven, with a loving and patient master. As always, stay safe.

    Also, by lifting the timber with only a single pulley at the top you're lifting the timber at 1-to-1 ratio. So if the timber is 100lbs you need to put 100lbs on your end of the cable to lift it. If you added a snatch block at the timber you would cut the force required to lift the timber to 50lbs. If you did a pully system with a double pulley at the top and a double pulley at the timber, you would be reducing the force required to lift the timber down to 25lbs. A couple of small changes to make your job a lot easier.

      I am guessing that his square logs are so heavy and awkward that he had to limit them in length so he could physically stack them high enough. Therefore, the overall size of the building had to be smaller. Perhaps Shawn might answer.

    • @JamesBu11
      @JamesBu11 4 роки тому +4

      I believe the idea is to do the majority of his projects with the workshop just outside of it, in its shade so to speak thats why he is leaving the canopy above intact. There is planned a second building just next to the one he is building now probably to the left of the fireplace, or so he intimated when he discussed it before.

    I really love the use of solid timber to build a permanent shelter . Insulation value per inch of thickness is equal to fiberglass , the inner and outer wall surfaces are finished and paint isn't required . Perhaps a mopping of Danish Oil for long term stability would be nice . I , and I'm sure you too , laughed at the lifting set up and the waste of time that became . As small as these timbers are , you are quite man enough to muscle them into place by a little leverage and logic . Looking forward to completion , this is a great idea . Long term stats should be interesting .

    Elizabeth says, Great job, Shawn! It is my opinion that the 224 thumbs-down, are folks who wear a mask without asking why, and they don't think for themselves, but judge and make choices and decisions throughout their lives based on how they "feel", based upon their "emotions" at the time! They are folks who could never live your independent, sovereign, God-given, self-reliant lifestyle because they listen to their failures speak to them, and are convinced by the voice of inexperience. I can't prove this, but it is my assertion. Just my opinion.

    This all comes with massive love, respect and admiration James, I hope it's received as such.
    If I might offer some constructive criticism. The flexibility of those two trees you used for the hoist are making you expend a lot more energy than you need to. Every time you lift a log you're first having to take up the slack from their flexing. It might be worth using two much larger trees as anchor points. Also, a block and tackle would cut the weight of the log considerably. At the moment you're lifting the same weight, just pulling down instead of up. Alternatively, you could use your atv to lift the log instead.
